Sometimes, it’s illegal to keep fish because they’re too small or too big (to fit in your cooler). On the other hand, catch and release is a fun and ethical approach that emphasizes conservation. You can model responsible angling and protect our aquatic ecosystems by releasing the fish unharmed. Whichever method you choose will depend on your personal goals and priorities. Both offer unique experiences and contribute to the fishing community in different ways. However, avid anglers benefit from prioritizing habitat preservation and sustaining their beloved hobby. As its name suggests, catch-and-release
fishing is a type of recreational fishing that involves releasing catch immediately back into the water. This supports native fish populations by allowing them to stay and breed in their natural habitat. Imagine if everyone kept every single fish they caught. How long would it be until no fish were left? Many anglers prefer this fishing method because it promotes sustainable fishing. Essentially, catch-and-release fishing is necessary to prevent fish from becoming extinct! How to Catch and Release Fish Catch and release is a simple process. Begin by watching your fishing pole, and act immediately when you have a bite. This prevents fish from deeply swallowing hooks. Whenever you feel a nibble, reel in your fish. Next, gently remove your fish from the hook and release it. But of course, you can measure it quickly or take a photo if you’d like. To increase the chances of a fish’s survival, handle it carefully and promptly return it to the water. Finally, if a fish appears exhausted, revive it quickly before letting it go. Do this by holding them by the midsection, facing the current upstream to help them regain strength. Then, release them headfirst, giving them the freedom to swim away.
Avoid tail-first releases, which unsettles the fish and hinder their swimming abilities. Minimizing Fish Stress and Maximizing Survival The unfortunate reality is that when you let a fish go back into the water – it might not survive. However, the choices you make before fishing make a significant impact.
Additionally, it’s best practice to use wet hands or gloves to preserve the fish’s protective layer (that slimy texture). And, of course, let it go with minimal physical contact.
We recommend using fish-friendly gear — such as circle or barbless hooks — to minimize stress on fish. These tools make removing the hook easier and safer, reducing potential injury.
Other Important Tips for Catch and Release Fishing Before casting your line, familiarize yourself with the specific regulations of a fishing spot. Many parks have implemented catchand-release practices to protect the future of native fish populations. So, if you need clarification, ask the park ranger or check out their website. Stay out of trouble and avoid those pesky fines!
Additionally, be careful when detaching the hook. Dehooker tools reduce animal stress and allow them to stay in the water. If the hook gets swallowed, cut the line as close to the hook as possible. Also, try to limit the fish’s exposure to air to a maximum of 60 seconds. (But the sooner you throw it back, the better!)
Also, many people wonder, ‘Do you need a fishing license to catch and release fishing?’ And the answer? Well, it depends. In many states, you need a license or permit whether or not you plan to keep the fish. Licenses pay for the use and care of the land and surrounding environment. Typically, a one-year license is less than $25.
Another handy tool is artificial lures. These lures frequently hook the fish in the mouth, making removal a breeze.

Brunswick Corporation Announces Multiple Solar Installations to Its Global Manufacturing Facilities
M
ETTAWA, Ill. (December 27, 2023) – Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC), the world’s largest recreational marine technology company, has announced the completion of solar installations at three of its global facilities including its first project in Mexico. Brunswick’s Reynosa facility, which manufactures its award-winning Bayliner, Trophy, Heyday, Sea Ray, and Lund brands, has installed more than 900 photovoltaic solar panels covering 4,000 square meters on the roof of the facility. The installation is expected to cover approximately 45% of the annual energy consumed by the facility’s assembly area and generate approximately 800,000 kWH of electricity per year. “We remain committed to enhancing the communities in which we live and work which includes focusing on sustainability within our plant operations,” said Jose Guzman, Reynosa General Manager “Adding these photovoltaic solar panels is equivalent to taking 125 gasoline-powered cars off the road, which is

The Murarrie office solar system will on average meet 50% of the office’s power demand and have the capability to supply 100% of power during peak times. The system will generate approximately 142,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually, enough to power around 20 homes for a full year.
In continued pursuit of its goal to have 60% of its electricity from renewable sources by the end of 2025, Brunswick also announced that it is installing two new 100kW solar systems – one at its Mercury Marine Australian/New Zealand head office in Dandenong South (Victoria) and another at the company’s BLA office in Murarrie, Brisbane (Queensland). The Dandenong installation is projected to generate approximately 48 percent of the office’s electricity needs, preventing 132 tons of CO2 from being released into the

Ingredients 2 dozen fresh Florida oysters, shucked and on the half shell 1 stick unsalted butter Hot sauce (your favorite), to taste 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped fine 3 lemons (1 for juice, 2 cut for garnish) 1 tablespoon fresh garlic, chopped fine 1 teaspoon seafood seasoning ¼ cup Parmesan cheese, grated ¼ cup panko or regular unseasoned breadcrumbs 1 teaspoon olive oil Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
Preparation: Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. In a small sauce pot combine butter, hot sauce, garlic, seafood seasoning and lemon juice, season with salt and fresh ground pepper. Melt the butter mixture over medium-low heat, stir to combine. Taste and adjust with more lemon or hot sauce if needed. Remove from heat and set aside.

In a small mixing bowl, combine breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese, olive oil and parsley. Use a fork to mix breadcrumb mixture and set aside.

Place oysters on the half shell on a cookie sheet. Spoon an even amount of melted butter over each oyster. Next, evenly sprinkle breadcrumb mixture over the top of each buttered oyster. Carefully place oysters in preheated oven and switch to broil. During this stage of the cooking it is important to keep a close eye on the oysters under the broiler. The oysters should only take 2 to 3 minutes to cook. Carefully remove oysters from the broiler and let cool slightly. Serve broiled oysters with any leftover butter mixture and lemon wedges.

Vessel Safety Checks (VSC): Vessel Safety Checks are a crucial component of the Clearwater Flotilla's mission to enhance boating safety. Trained and certified examiners will be available throughout the year to conduct complimentary VSCs for local boaters. These checks cover a variety of safety aspects, including life jackets, navigation lights, fire extinguishers, and other essential equipment. By participating in a VSC, boaters can ensure that their vessels meet all required safety standards, fostering a safer maritime environment for all.
SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. Captain’sCorner with Captain Kyle Messier On behalf of the Reel Florida Fishing Charters team we want to wish everyone a safe and Happy New Year! As we enter the New Year and winter weather season, anglers visiting the Nature Coast will be delighted to know that there are still a plethora of inshore angling opportunities due in large part to the extended Fall season that we are currently experiencing. Higher than normal air temperatures along with 74° water temps have been a recipe for incredible fishing along the flats of Crystal River and Homosassa for Redfish, Speckled, Trout, Sheepshead, Black Drum, and Snook. As we all know this glorious weather pattern will not last forever but according to records of the past and good rub from our Crystal Ball here’s what our fishing forecast will look like as we enter another incredible year of fishing here along the Nature Coast. Inshore Expectations: It’s preached throughout the year on my boat and all of my partner guides boats that the winter season can be by far the best season of the year for inshore fishing. Reason being is that the Nature Coast rarely if ever sees a major prolonged cold blast so our flats remain at a constant temperature that’s comfortable to our local shallow water species such as Redfish, Sheepshead, Black Drum, Speckled Trout and Snook. As regular fronts come and go these fish feed regularly meaning anglers
luck out with consistent weekly rapid feeding patterns. For those anglers looking to conquer multiple species off a bucket list targeting areas of exposed oyster bars along with sand and mud flats using Live Shrimp or Shrimp Imitation lures will offer anglers opportunities to catch a variety of different species all in one sitting. As the warming of the day occurs brown shrimp will appear from there over night burrows and begin roaming along the bars and flats searching out microscopic food items. Stalking these same areas are hungry predatory fish looking for an easy meal. A fun way to fish oyster bars is to actually anchor on top of a bar at a higher outgoing tide and sight fish species that are gradually coming off the bar due to the receding tide. Obviously, this can be a challenge based on the tide but stalking schools of Snook and Redfish roaming around the perimeter of a bar is way easier to fish then targeting these same fish when they are directly on top of a snag proven oyster bar. Fly Fishing Expectations: Hands down this is the time of year you want to be here along the Nature Coast if you’re an avid fly fishing enthusiast or even just a beginner. Whether your interest is sight fishing Redfish in ankle deep water or taking a stab at a massive resident Crystal River Tarpon or even hooking up with your first saltwater fish on fly as Ladyfish
with Captain Taylor Cowieson Wintertime Fishing Bradenton Florida Winter time is in full swing here in Bradenton and Anna Maria Island. We are doing our best to work around the weather with it being an El Niño winter bringing a good amount of rain and cold fronts so far. We are still catching a variety of fish on our inshore fishing charters in Tampa Bay and the Manatee River. When the conditions for the day allow we have also been venturing into the Gulf of Mexico about 6-8 miles doing some bottom fishing for snapper, sheepshead, and the occasional hogfish or grouper. Most of our fishing charters lately we have been focusing on the inshore fishing in Tampa Bay. We are fishing around some of the artificial reefs in the bay with live shrimp targeting sheepshead, whiting, seatrout, sugar trout, and the occasional mangrove snapper. We have also been able to target some bonnethead sharks the last few weeks when it is not too windy and have had great action. On some of the warmer days

we are able to fish with whitebait (pilchards) we are still catching plenty of catch and release snook, jack crevelle, some seatrout, and redfish. We are mostly targeting the snook in the Manatee River in the areas with darker mud bottom and good current. The seatrout have been in some of the same areas as the bonnethead sharks in deep grass flats and deeper edges of the shallow grass flats. We are seeing some ladyfish in these areas as well which provide for fast, fun action on light tackle. When we can make it out into the Gulf of Mexico we are getting very consistent action fishing live and dead shrimp on the bottom around the artificial reefs and natural limestone ledges. We are seeing more sheepshead as the winter goes on and they get into their spawning phase. There is also great eating white grunts “key west grunts” some mangrove snapper, porgies, and the elusive hogfish. We also

West Central Florida Southwest Coast and Jack Crevalle will be in abundance NOW! is a great time to visit the Nature Coast for a day of fly-fishing. Two species of fish that are often overlooked in favor of more “Instagram” worthy species are Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish. If you put both of those species side by side the first thing you will notice is a forked tail that’s built for speed and quick burst during the fight. Both of these fish will readily take a fly, which is why they’re some of my favorites and lately my anglers and I have had a blast fishing smaller white Gurglers on the surface. Let me be the first to tell you the violent strikes that come from these fast paced fish is an absolute joy to watch. On the more technical side Redfish will always be a favorite of fly anglers as we go into the winter months. Our local waters are at their most clean and pristine this time of year making sight fishing for those Bronze Bombers so much fun. Anglers who have been honing in their fly-casting skills all summer long will find targeting our local Redfish population to be challenging yet rewarding in so many ways. I would compare fishing for these fish during the winter months to the same as hunting for turkeys without the blind. In the end it’s always a blast fishing the nature coast! Some months, weeks, and days are just a little more rewarding!!

34TH ANNUAL PRESIDENTIAL SAILFISH TOURNAMENT - JANUARY 19 - 21, 2024 - ISLAMORADA, FL - The Florida Keys Gold Cup Sailfish Championship is a combination of three of the premier sailfish events in the Florida Keys. The FKGC is both an angler tournament as well as a team tournament. Each team must fish aboard the same boat in all three events. At least one angler of each team entered must fish all three events. This format stems from a long history of sailfish tri-fectas. Teams compete to win the coveted Florida Keys Gold Cup Sailfish Tournament trophy. The three events that comprise the Florida Keys Gold Cup include: Islamorada Sailfish Tournament; Islamorada Fishing Club Sailfish Tournament; Cheeca Lodge Presidential Sailfish Tournament. Each tournament has their own set of rules and entry fees. Each angler competes on an individual basis for the Championship Ring that includes bragging rights for the entire year. Teams compete for cash prizes and the coveted Gold Cup Trophy. There are also team awards for second and third places. The Florida Keys Gold Cup Sailfish Championship lures anglers from all over the world. The field has a limited entry of teams of elite sport fisherman. Early entry is encouraged. By entering the Florida Keys Gold Cup, anglers are supporting the Islamorada Charter Boat Association. The charter boat association is a 501-C-3 organization that works to conserve our fisheries here for future generations. The competition heats up in November when the Islamorada Sailfish Tournament kicks of this tournament series. The fishing is so good during this time of year because this is the time that the bass are in their pre-spawn and spawning stages which produce some of the best catches and some of the biggest bass during trips. January-April is known for the blackfin tuna, wahoo, sailfish, and king mackerel run in the Florida Keys. May 1 is the official start of grouper fishing season in Florida. There are more than 2,000 known wrecks in the Gulf of Mexico. Since the gulf is so flat any structure or break in sea bottom will hold the fish. Off the wrecks schools of cobia, tuna, snapper, mackerel, permit, jacks, and sharks patrol the area. It is understood this kind of activity creates an action-packed day! For the seasoned angler or the beginners who want to spend a full day on the water this is the trip for them. We offer 4-hour and 6-hour trips as well. Many of our patrons are not diehard anglers but instead want to take in a great expierence and have a nice fresh catch lunch or dinner. It is common while taking a fishing tour to see dolphins, sea turtles, sting rays, and bird life. As a full time guide, I forget how fortunate I am to be able to see such sea life on a daily basis. It always comes back to me when on a charter, someone will light up and point out a dolphin or sea turtle and say that just made my trip.
