Albemarle Boats Announces New 45 Carolinian Fish Around Express Model

lbemarle Boats, The Carolina Classic is pleased to announce that a new 45 foot Carolinian Fish Around Express is currently under construction, and this new model will debut in early 2025. According to Albemarle General Manager, Burch Perry, “The debut of the 53 Spencer Edition in October marked our sixth new model in less than seven years. Our ongoing commitment to product development is evident, and our momentum continues. We are tremendously excited about the 45 Carolinian. While her lines give away her heritage, this boat will be unlike anything we have built before in terms of size, power, and layout. She will meet the needs of our existing Express boat customers looking to move up in size, and her Fish Around design will offer them increased fishability.”
Mercury power will provide fast cruising speeds, maneuverability, and shallow draft, while freeing up space in the hull to accommodate mechanical equipment and a truly livable interior. “This new model will have a custom Carolina look, unsurpassed visibility from the helm with the standard rigid acrylic enclosure, and a truly versatile design,” stated Keith Privott, Albemarle Director of Sales and Product Development. “The hull is designed to slice through head seas, land softly in the troughs, and keep the enclosure dry. Our team has focused on customization for our boat owners in recent years. With this

Brunswick Corporation begins 2024 with 15 Major New Product Launches

ETTAWA, Ill. – Entering 2024, Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC), continued its rapid cadence of new product launches, debuting 15 exciting new products from across its award-winning brands at major global trade shows in just the first few weeks of the year. Mercury Marine introduced the most powerful Avator electric outboard models yet, the 75e and 110e, which made their global debuts at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and featured in regional launches at both the Toronto Boat Show and Boot Dusseldorf. Mercury now has five Avator engine models in its lineup and showed a concept for a larger and more powerful electric outboard at CES and Dusseldorf. Additionally, Mercury announced the new 9.9hp Pro Kicker conventional outboard at the Toronto Show. Simrad showed the NSX ULTRAWIDE multi-function display for the first time on a Sea Ray boat at CES. The 16:9 aspect ratio display is available in 12-inch and 15-inch screen sizes. It was also present on the Navico Group exhibit at the Dusseldorf show and was featured in several OEM displays, and it will be at many upcoming major shows, including the Miami Boat Show in February. Sea Ray launched its exciting new SDX 270 and SDX 270 Surf models in early January at the Atlanta Boat Show. The SDX 270 Surf is the first SDX model to feature the Mercury Marine MerCruiser Bravo 4S forward-facing drive and innovative surf control system designed jointly by Mercury Marine and Navico Group. Princecraft, the aluminum boat market leader in Canada, unveiled the Vectra 23 WRL pontoon, the
innovative Ventura 230 WRL hybrid fishing boat, and the Avator-powered Brio 17 during a media event in Toronto while Brunswick’s Harris pontoon brand launched its most premium model, the all-new Crowne 250, in early January and won an NMMA Innovation Award at the Minneapolis Boat Show. Lowe Boats also announced the new and very affordable RS Pontoon series that features six models ranging from 23 to 27 feet. “We know consumers continue to appreciate innovative new products and technology, and Brunswick is entering 2024 by introducing industry-leading new products at a rapid pace, some of which have already captured major awards and set new benchmarks in their respective categories,” said Dave Foulkes, Brunswick Corporation CEO. “We have no plans to slow down, with a number of major announcements still to come at the Miami International Boat Show in February.” Brunswick is also continuing its record pace of awards, already capturing an NMMA Innovation Award for the Crowne 250 and the 2023 European Powerboat of the Year award for the Sea Ray SLX 260, among others. Three of its brands are also celebrating anniversaries in 2024 including Mercury Marine (85), Princecraft (70), and Sea Ray (65). Ingredients 3-4 dozen live Florida hard-shell clams, rinsed 2 large Florida tomatoes, diced 1 cup Florida cherry tomatoes, halved 1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon Florida seafood seasoning blend 1 small onion, sliced thin 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 3 cups low-sodium vegetable or seafood broth 2 tablespoons fresh herbs (rosemary, thyme, oregano) 2 tablespoons fresh garlic, minced 2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped 1 lemon, juiced (plus more for garnish) Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
Preparation: Preheat a large saute pan over medium heat. Add the butter and sliced onions to the saute pan. Cook onions for about 5 minutes or until just caramelized. Add 1 tablespoon of the seafood seasoning, garlic, chopped herbs and diced tomatoes. Stir ingredients, add the broth and Florida clams. Cover saute pan with a tight-fitting lid and let cook for 7 to 10 minutes. Remove the lid and discard any clams that have not opened. While the clams are cooking, in a small bowl combine the halved cherry tomatoes, chopped basil, 1 teaspoon seafood seasoning and lemon juice. Stir ingredients to combine. Taste and adjust seasoning with sea salt and fresh ground pepper. To serve, use a slotted spoon to add the clams to a platter, or serve them in the saute pan they were cooked in. Garnish the clam dish with the Florida cherry tomato mixture. Serve warm with crusty bread.

Florida captain among nine TowBoatUS Captains Honored for Lifesaving Acts
S
PRINGFIELD, Va., Feb. 5, 2024 - When recreational boats break down on the water, need a battery jump, run out of fuel or run aground, the nation’s largest fleet of on-water towing and assistance, TowBoatUS, responds 24/7 to get them home. Sometimes, however, matters aren’t so routine and the captains that helm TowBoatUS response vessels choose to step in as good Samaritans to help save lives as well. At the annual gathering of the TowBoatUS fleet, company owners, captains and BoatUS staff honored nine captains from the U.S. and Canada who selflessly acted to provide emergency lifesaving assistance in 2023. Two Woody Pollak Awards - for the highest honors in lifesaving - and four Meritorious Service Awards were bestowed. Woody Pollak Award: Capt. Carlos Galindo, TowBoatUS Islamorada, Florida On a Sunday morning in March, a mayday call went out over VHF channel 16 indicating a boater had severely cut himself and was in immediate need of help. The caller did not give the correct GPS position, prompting U.S. Coast Guard watchstanders to request a location. In a desperate voice, the caller said they were at the Islamorada Hump. A minute later, Capt. Carlos Galindo of TowBoatUS Islamorada, Florida, noticed a local Coast Guard response vessel quickly depart port heading toward the Hump, and he decided to follow the lifesavers. While racing to the scene, but still about 4 miles out, Galindo kept replaying the desperate caller’s plea for help in his head – and remembered hearing the engine running while voice communications were made with the Coast Guard. As the Coast Guard vessel continued to make way toward Hump, Galindo pulled back his
throttles and came to a complete stop, looking around. He soon spotted a vessel approximately 2 1/2 miles south of his current location, underway but navigating irregularly before suddenly coming to a complete stop. Galindo turned the wheel, hit the throttles and within minutes was upon the boat. No one was at the helm, but a woman was waving her hands from the forward deck. Galindo immediately provided lifesavers his position. What he then saw aboard was gruesome: While trying to cut an outrigger line, a male boater had accidently cut his arm, hitting a major artery. Blood was throughout the 24-foot boat “like a murder scene,” described Galindo. The man was lying on the bow and, incredibly, still somewhat conscious. Galindo jumped aboard the bloodied boat and tied a tourniquet around the victim’s arm, stanching the bleeding. Galindo then sat him up and kept the man talking to him, maintaining eye contact to keep him alert, while Coast Guard responders raced to the scene. About 10 minutes later, the man was transferred to the Coast Guard vessel and sped to the hospital where he survived. Others receiving awards: • Woody Pollak Award: Capt. Captain’sCorner with Captain Dylan Hubbard INSHORE FISHING REPORT Sheepshead are thick right now around our docks, piers, bridges and jetties. Virtually any structures right now are holding plentiful sheepshead feeding well on barnacles, clams, oysters, small pieces of shrimp, fiddle crabs and more! We are seeing quite a few caught around the pass especially around the docks and bridge. They are even cruising some of the mangrove shorelines of the back bays too. Residential canal docks especially where water is moving is a good spot for them too. Trout action going well around the back bay waters. We are seeing them attacking the soft plastics, live shrimp and surface plugs. The water temps have come up a little and seemingly their action has remained steady. Redfish are biting well around the area and you can find plenty working the docks of canal tips near the flats, or islands or close to passes. They are hiding under the docks looking for shrimp. Working docks casting live shrimp under them with a jig head is a great way to prospect for these redfish and you will often run into the trout, black drum or sheepshead too. Black drum have picked up a bit this past week around the area. We are seeing big boys around the bridges in

Snook, seatrout, and redfish are the main targets. We look for mangrove points with current, oyster beds, and areas adjacent to deeper water. Flounder are biting well around the area too, we are seeing them hanging on the sandy bottom areas near the flats or dock lines. They love to lay in wait and ambush passing baits that venture to close to the sandy bottom areas.
Currently, there’s a significant abundance of lane snapper close to the shore, and we’ve been observing remarkable clusters, including exceptionally large ones! Recently, we landed the largest lane snapper we’ve ever encountered in the shallow waters, approximately 40-60 feet deep. They’re responding favorably to shrimp, squid, and cut threadfins as bait. These snappers exhibit high activity levels, are prolific, aggressive, and are known for their excellent taste.
NEARSHORE FISHING REPORT Hogfish action is going well around our near shore waters aboard our 5hr half days, 10hr all days, and also the private fishing charters. They are definitely most common around that 40-60ft range but we are seeing them inside that from time to time and even a little more shallow at time too. You can find them deeper, but as you go deeper theres other more aggressive fish that make it tricky to get to the hogfish. Mangrove snapper aren’t too abundant close to the shore, unless you venture into deeper nearshore and offshore waters. Lately, we’ve been spotting some good-sized ones during our ten-hour fishing trips in the deeper section of nearshore waters, roughly around 70100 feet deep. They seem to have a liking for cut threadfin and shrimp. Every now and then, we also come across them in shallower

on. On some of the deeper grass flats outside the Manatee River we are getting good action with spotted seatrout, Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, and jack crevelle. The reefs and major bridges in Tampa Bay are producing good sheepshead action as these fish start to heavily spawn. Sheepshead primarily feed on crustaceans. I like to use live shrimp. You can also use small mud crabs. Within the next 4 to 6 weeks we should start to see the king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, bonita, sharks, and cobia as they migrate up our coastal beaches. They are chasing schools of sardines, pilchards, and threadfin herring. When these fish make it to our area along the beaches of Anna Maria Island and the artificial reefs just a couple miles into the Gulf of Mexico it can provide for great fishing action! These fish provide great fun and unforgettable battles on rod and reel. OFFSHORE FISHING REPORT We’re pretty stoked about our boat coming back from drydock soon – probably within the week, which means that we can finally get back to some OFFSHORE FISHING! The weather’s finally on our side next week, and we’re itching to get back on the water. Dealing with the recent rough weather made it tough to go offshore, but we’re determined to take advantage of this good weather streak and get back to catching some FIRETRUCK red grouper and can’t forget about the Blackfin Tuna.

West Central Florida West grunts, mangrove snapper, and lane snapper. All of these are great eating fish. Tarpon will start to funnel into Tampa Bay and just off our beaches in April and May. If you are looking to go tarpon fishing give me a call! There are a couple different ways that I enjoy fishing for these beautiful fish. Finding a school of migratory fish cruising a couple hundred yards off the beach is one of the coolest ways to hook into a tarpon. I also fish for them around the Sunshine Skyway bridge and Egmont Key depending on conditions. Tarpon are purely a game fish and we always practice catch and release. As we get closer to March and April we are approaching the height of our season. It is best to book your fishing charter soon to ensure that you get the day you are looking for. We are kid friendly and cater to all skill levels including people that have never fished before!

We have had some great days, some so-so days and some slow days. At least we have caught fish on every single one of our trips.

Our best day sailfishing so far this year has been 11 releases in one day followed by 7 releases in one day. The rest of the trips have been anywhere from 1 to 5 releases a day. Good sailfishing is usually created by north current, blue water, decent wind direction and strength and presence of bait offshore. We have had most of these conditions but until this past week or so, we have not had a good amount of bait offshore. The bait that we like to see offshore is flying fish, bullet bonitos and ballyhoo. We have not had that in the past month or so, but last week, the bait started showing up and the sailfish were right there with them. The fishing has drastically improved in just one week. The sailfishing will continue to improve with the passing of every cold front and due to El Nino, we are seeing a ton of cold fronts this year. After the passing of every cold front, I can’t wait to go out there and put up the kites and hopefully have a double-
digit release day. BTW – by cold fronts, the temperature is in the 50’s which may be cold for us Floridians, but with the rest of the nation below zero, its still balmy South Florida to the rest of the country. What has not been spotty has been the daytime swordishing. It has been very consistent and quite good. We haven’t had any huge fish this year, but it’s still only January and we have sword trip tomorrow, so tomorrow may be the day! With daytime swordishing, we use an electric/manual reel. It’s a Penn International 80 coupled with a Hooker detachable drive. With this reel, you can use the electric to lift the bait up if you don’t get a bite on that drop and can wind the fish by hand when you do get a bite. You can also use the electric to fight the fish, the option is purely yours. For those purists that strictly want a manual reel, we have developed another method. We use a Penn 50 wide with 50-pound Sufix braid. We have a 200-pound wind on leader. At the top of the wind on leader we attached a 3- or 4-pound lead that stays fixed on. We crimp the bait onto the leader and use an 8-pound steel weight that we deploy to the bottom. Once the bait hits the bottom, the 8 - p o u n d weight slips off and you stay at or near the bottom with the 3- or 4-pound lead.

Sportfishing Report: Sailfish Just Keep Coming! Wahoo, Kingfish Mania! We wrapped up January and are surging well into February with continued nearshore and offshore action! The Sailfish continue to show up in droves and are ready to eat nearly every bait that we throw at them! Our clients have been catching and releasing large numbers of Sailfish as our Fleet focuses almost exclusively on fishing live baits underneath our fishing kites. Kite-fishing is a truly amazing and engaging experience as you get to see the Sailfish AS THEY EAT the bait. Nothing gets the blood pumping like watching a double- or triple-header Sailfish bite up on the surface. We can fish up to three (3) live baits per kite, with at least two (2) kites up at any one time. We’re fishing between 90 and 250 feet of water. We’ve also had luck shallower than 90 feet as we watch Sailfish cartwheel in the midst of Ballyhoo schools up on the reef. When there is not enough wind to keep the kites in the air, we can also slow troll live baits such as Ballyhoo and Goggle Eyes as well as troll our specially-crafted mullet strips.

King Mackerel are Challenging Sailfish for Dominance! King Mackerel (‘Kingfish”) have also set up shop on and near the reefs to pounce on our unwary kite baits and trolled baits and they have only gotten thicker – and
hungrier. Kingfish have teeth that are more like surgical scalpels and they fight hard, which is why we call them “smokers” – they will smoke your drag on scorching runs once they’re hooked. When they’re not crushing our live baits under the kite or slow-trolled, Kingfish have also been responding to our strip baits trolled below the surface on planers along with as Islanders with ballyhoo in both the blue/white and red/black color combinations. We’ve been finding the Kingfish in between 70 and 150 feet of water. Fishing has been so good that we even caught them on our Drift boat the “Lois Ann”. The Wahoo are Stopping by to Say Hello! Wahoos have also shown up to crush our kite baits and our Kingfish baits trolled behind planers. The only thing better than the screaming drags and intense fights with Wahoo are how Wahoo taste on your dinner table! The Sharks are Keeping us Busy! The shark fishing continues to be hot despite the chilly conditions, especially the big Hammerhead Sharks that are still in abundance! Hammerheads are known as sluggers and are not afraid to pop up to eat a bait intended for species such as Sailfish, Kingfish or Amberjacks. Our clients love to tell their friends and family how they battled one of the most recognizable

Southeast Coast Remember we are fishing in 1600 to 1800 feet of water, so if this is the route you take, there is a lot of winding up if you don’t hook a fish. This method complies with IGFA rules. If this is the option you want, please contact us beforehand so we can make sure we have the right equipment on board. I would also like to mention that I won Top Release captain for Atlantic Sailfish. I have won this award 7 out of the past 10 years and this would only be possibly due to the great charters I have plus all the sponsors that help us out immensely. I am also thankful for having such a hard working mate (Billy) who also won top Sailfish mate of the year. A special thanks to my family for putting up with my long hours. It takes dedication and hard work to achieve this award but is well worth the smiles we put on people’s faces! The next few months will be hardcore kite fishing mostly for sailfish, with a few swordfish trips mixed in. We have the Miami Boat Show coming up in February and we are almost completely booked up, but still have one or two days open. Southeast Coast and renowned shark species the world over. As for the rest of our shark fishing trips, we continue to put clients on big sharks, with each trip landing at least one shark, with most trips catching several. Caribbean Reef Sharks, Blacktips and Silky Sharks have been active. The best shark baits continue to be either a live Bonito or dead Bonito or Kingfish dropped down in 300 feet of water. Drift Fishing Report: Aboard the Lois Ann, we continue to run two trips every day and returning with stuffed fish boxes and grinning clients. Throughout January and into February, we’ve been guiding our clients to catches of Yellowtail Snappers, Mangrove Snappers, Mutton Snappers as well as Kingfish and Amberjacks – and we’re doing it in style and comfort! We warmly welcome budding anglers of all ages aboard! Kids are sure to have a great time experiencing the thrill of fishing with us. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone.
