Orlando Boat Show

The Marine Industry Association of Central Florida (MIACF) presents the Orlando Boat Show for a three-day event on April

5, 6, and 7, 2024 at the Orange County Convention Center, North Hall B. $10 per person online or at the gate. Kids under the age of 12 are free! The highly anticipated show features 20 of Central Florida’s top boat dealers representing more than 80 manufacturers with approximately 400 boats on display.

The Orlando Boat Show features a wide variety of boats including bowriders, center consoles, deck boats, flats boats, freshwater fishing boats, jet boats, pontoons, and surf boats to fit any lifestyle and budget.

Extra incentives are available only during the show from dealers and manufacturers such as extended warranties, service

packages, waived dockage, enhanced electronics, and accessory packages.

“The Orlando Boat Show is designed for new and avid boaters to explore the latest in boating trends and technology, featuring hundreds of new 2024 models by the world’s leading boat manufacturers,” said Joe Lewis, general manager of Mount Dora Boating Center and Marina and president of MIACF. “With interactive displays and a new kids’ fishing clinic, the whole family will enjoy the best of boating at one show.”

8 Sailboat Maintenance Tips: How to Maintain Your Sailboat

Sailing is a breeze once you’ve got the hang of it! And with just a little knowhow, you can use the power of the wind to venture out on thrilling outdoor adventures. But what happens when you’re not just the sailor but also the owner? It’s a whole different ballgame. And sailboat maintenance can be overwhelming for many boaters. But don’t worry; this sailboat maintenance guide will explain everything you need to know.

The Essential Sailboat Maintenance Checklist

To keep your boat in top shape, follow this sailboat maintenance checklist to ensure maximum performance and longevity.

1. Inspect the Overall Boat Structure

First, it’s a good idea to inspect the boat thoroughly and ensure everything is in shipshape. It’s wise to check the hull for any visible damage at least once a year or every few months. Look for any signs of problems like leaks, cracks, paint issues, scratches, or weak areas. If you spot any red flags, it’s wise to seek advice from a professional to ensure there are no hidden issues. (It’s always wise to err on the side of caution!) And make sure to check your bilge weekly for any water, oil, or fuel leaks. It’s critical to stay on top of maintenance.

And finally, pay attention to the other essential parts of your boat, like the mast and steering system. Visually inspect all the different components that keep it sailing smoothly.

2. Keep a Record of All Sailboat Maintenance

If you haven’t already, keeping a notebook with records every time you inspect your boat is a good idea. It’ll come in handy! You’ll be able to keep tabs on what’s effective, what needs replacing, and what’s working now but might need repairs in the future.

3. Test Equipment

After completing the visual check, verifying that the bilge pump is in automatic mode and operating smoothly is essential. And remember to check the raw water cooling systems and inspect the sea strainers. During this time, you’ll want to empty any strainers and ensure the water flows smoothly out of the boat.

4. Check the Anchor and Chain

When it comes to sailboat maintenance, checking your anchor underwater may not be the most exciting task, but it’s necessary every once in a while. However, make sure to wait for clear waters before diving in!

Below the waterline, check the anchor and chain’s condition to ensure nothing unusual is happening. Because now and then, the chain gets all twisted up, or the anchor decides to take a little detour.

5. Charge Your Batteries

Additionally, remember to check the battery levels during your sailboat maintenance checklist. Ideally, sailors would check any

batteries daily. You’ll thank yourself later for taking precautions to ensure those batteries won’t die, especially mid-voyage!

6. Test the Rigging

Take the time to check your rigging at least once a season. It’s important! Pull the mast down, inspect it, and run a quick test. Check for signs of weakness or decay and any broken strands or corrosion patterns. That should do the trick.

7. Clean and Photograph Sails

One of the most essential parts of your boat is the sails. Remember to rinse sails with fresh water regularly and dry them thoroughly before storing them. Washing them allows you to inspect for visible signs of wear and tear.

Additionally, make a point of photographing your sails while cleaning! It’s an excellent way to keep track of your sailboat maintenance efforts and stay organized. Plus, visual benchmarks can help monitor the status of any boat part over time.

8. Regularly Clean During Sailboat Maintenance

Lastly, keeping a clean vessel is crucial to sailboat maintenance. And it helps ensure everything is functioning perfectly. Regular cleaning also prevents the buildup of mildew, salt, dirt, and corrosion, which can cause various issues. Stick with biodegradable boat soap and cleaning products specifically designed for water use for optimal results.

Sailboat Maintenance Costs

Like any vessel, ownership comes with more costs than the initial price tag. Fortunately, your sailboat is a cost-effective and lowmaintenance alternative to a powerboat of the same size. (Fuel is on the house!)

The average annual sailboat maintenance costs fall somewhere between $2,000 to $5,000. Boat maintenance costs are often around 10% of the purchase price. Naturally, larger boats require more maintenance, and fancier amenities come at a higher cost.

The Orlando Boat Show Returns to the Orange County Convention Center April 5-7

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 1, 2024) – The Marine Industry Association of Central Florida (MIACF) presents the Orlando Boat Show for a threeday event on April 5, 6, and 7, 2024 at the Orange County Convention Center, North Hall B. The highly anticipated show features 19 of Central Florida’s top boat dealers representing more than 80 manufacturers with approximately 400 boats on display.

The Orlando Boat Show features a wide variety of boats including bowriders, center consoles, deck boats, flats boats, freshwater fishing boats, jet boats, pontoons, and surf boats to fit any lifestyle and budget. Extra incentives are available only during the show from dealers and manufacturers such as extended warranties, service packages, waived dockage, enhanced electronics, and accessory packages.

“The Orlando Boat Show is designed for new and avid boaters to explore the latest in boating trends and technology, featuring hundreds of new 2024 models by the world’s leading boat manufacturers,” said Joe Lewis, general manager of Mount Dora Boating Center and Marina and president of MIACF. “With interactive displays and a new kids’ fishing clinic, the whole family will enjoy the best of boating at one show.”

Lewis continued that the boating lifestyle promotes physiological and psychological changes spanning health and wellness, awe and wonder, creativity and play, happiness, and relaxation.

Recent research has shown that people experience emotional, behavioral, and psychological benefits being near, in, on, or underwater, and while participating in activities like boating. The effect of boating on our lives, and its fundamental connection to our planet’s waters, are well documented from an economic, ecological,

and educational perspective.

Green Goddess Pan-Fried Florida Grouper

Ingredients

•

cup whole milk (or low-fat milk)

• 1 cup plain Greek yogurt

• 3 tablespoons fresh herbs (such as thyme, rosemary, parsley and/or dill), divided

• 1 garlic clove

• 1 lemon, juiced

• 1 teaspoon all-purpose seasoning, plus more to lightly season fish

• Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

• 2 cups panko or regular unseasoned breadcrumbs

• 1 tablespoon cooking oil

Preparation:

Prepare dressing by adding milk, yogurt, 2 tablespoons fresh herbs, garlic, lemon juice, all-purpose seasoning, salt and pepper to a blender and blending thoroughly. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Set the dressing aside (or store in refrigerator) until ready to use, reserving 2 tablespoons for breading.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Preheat a large, ovenproof saute pan over medium-high heat.

Prepare the Florida grouper by seasoning the top of each fillet with the reserved 1 tablespoon of fresh herbs and a light seasoning of the all-purpose blend. Add the breadcrumbs to a shallow container. Lightly coat the tops of each seasoned fillet with an even amount of the reserved 2 tablespoons of dressing. Once all the fillets are seasoned and dressed evenly, place them with the top side down in the breadcrumbs to coat the top side only. Repeat this process with the remaining fillets. Carefully shake off any excess breadcrumbs.

Add the cooking oil to the preheated pan and carefully add each coated fillet to the heated pan with the coated side down. Cook each fillet for 3 to 4 minutes, until golden brown and crispy. Carefully flip over each fillet and place the pan in the oven. Bake for another 5 to 7 minutes or until almost completely done throughout. Remove the cooked fillets from the oven and let rest slightly. Serve the Florida grouper fillets with the rest of the dressing.

Green Shipping: New Supply System for Methanol Improves Safety and Saves Energy

The Danish company Eltronic FuelTech is now the first in the industry to offer equipment for supplying fuel from tanks to engines on methanol-powered ships. This can save shipping companies both money as well as energy while enhancing safety.

The naming of Laura Mærsk, A.P. MollerMaersk’s first container ship that can sail on green methanol, marked the start of more sustainable shipping. In the wake of this, the Danish engineering company Eltronic FuelTech has now launched a new supply system – a so-called Low-flashpoint Fuel Supply system (LFSS) – for this particular vessel.

In doing so, players in the shipping industry can now have an integrated fuel supply system from the fuel tank to the engine comprising a single supply system and fuel valve train which improves safety, cuts costs and saves energy.

“Embracing green methanol as a fuel has been increasing markedly in recent years, and

with the new LFSS system, we can make a significant contribution to the green transition of the shipping industry. In the past, several suppliers were required to put together a complete fuel supply system all the way from the fuel tank to the engine, but the fact that we can now supply the entire system brings multiple benefits,” says Louise Andreasen, CEO at Eltronic FuelTech.

There are savings associated with the logistics, as one and the same container can be used for spare parts for the entire system, and fewer repair technicians will be required in connection with maintenance.

“It’s a huge advantage for customers that it’s now available as a combined package so they no longer have to maintain the interfaces between two different systems. At the same time, when we deliver a combined solution, we can guarantee the safety of the entire system,” says Louise Andreasen.

Pump alone can save 40,000 kWh a year.

While most other supply systems on the

market use two pumps to pump the methanol around, Eltronic FuelTech has managed to create an LFSS with only one pump, thereby saving considerable energy. In addition, it is now possible to adjust the pump depending on the engine load, so that only the right amount of methanol is supplied to the engine, something which has not been possible until now.

“This means that if a ship is sailing slowly, the pump automatically adjusts to the load, so that it only runs at 60% of full power for example. With other systems, unnecessarily large quantities of methanol are pumped around the system, which clearly affects electricity consumption, especially on large ships,” says Louise Andreasen, and continues:

“With the biggest engines on container ships, for example, the pumps usually use more than 100,000 kWh a year pumping the methanol from the fuel tanks to the engine. With our new supply system, we expect to be able to cut consumption by up to 40%.”

In addition to developing systems for a ship’s main engines, Eltronic FuelTech has also developed a compact combined system to supply the ship’s auxiliary engines with fuel from the tanks.

6, 2024 – Capt. Daimin Barth and wife, Amber Zigaldo, are on a roll. The young couple in their 30s first became owners of their two on-water towing and assistance locations, TowBoatUS Carrabelle and TowBoatUS St. Marks, just a year ago. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemicfree aspects of recreational boating. CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on

the size of your boat. After successful inspection you are awarded a vessel safety check sticker which is affixed to your vessel near your state registration sticker. Start of the Fishing Fever

At last, April is upon us, and with it comes some of the best fishing Tampa Bay has to offer. Anglers from Double Branch in the north to Bishop Harbor in the south are treated to some of the best inshore fishing anywhere in the state. Snook start their migration from the creeks and rivers to the flats and eventually to the passes to spawn by the first full moon of May.

Redfish and trout that call the flats home all summer long start bulking up on the greenback sardines. This live bait treat starts the ball rolling in the spring and lasts until the first cold snap in the fall. So, look for the bait along the mangroves, and not far from there you’ll find the fish.

Look for mangrove snapper around rock piles and under the bridges best bet medium live shrimp or small greenback sardines. I started using a Yellowtail jig new in this area but very popular down south and in the keys, its nothing more than a 1/0 hook with 1/8 or 1/16 oz weight on the shank of the hook and comes in four different colors super for catching mangroves and flounder.

Tripletails are number 10 on my food scale for taste and the same goes for a tough fighting fish. Live shrimp works wonders on these guys, free line them around crab trap boys or range

markers. They do spook easily so keep your distance and let the bait drift around the buoys. Sometimes it takes more than one presentation for them to take the bait.

Spanish mackerel and cobia also follow the bait inside the Skyway Bridge. The bigger baits will hang around tripods, artificial reefs and rocky bottoms that abound from channel A just inside the Skyway bridge to the Howard Franklin bridge to the north.

I find Spanish mackerel fishing exciting and most productive for my clients, so I make it a point to start my morning by searching for a school of big mackerel to get the adrenalin going. After boating 20 or 30 mackerel, it’s time to move on and start another hunt.

My method for fishing Spanish mackerel is very simple. Find the bait and anchor, and start a chum line to keepthe mackerel feeding behind the boat. Cut greenbacks will work great or a 5 pound box of frozen chum also does the trick.

Using light action tackle such as a7.5foot rod,3000 spinning reels with plenty of 15-pound test braided line, and a #1/0 XX long shank hook with 30-pound test fluorocarbon leader about 32-inches long works well. The XX long hook eliminates the need to use wire leader and increases

West Central Fly and Light Tackle Report – March

March continues to offer fantastic fly fishing opportunities in Tampa Bay and along the West Central Florida coast. The water temperatures, hovering around 65 degrees Fahrenheit, are showing signs of a slight increase as cold fronts space apart. Anglers continue to target redfish, spotted sea trout, and snook using proven tactics adapted to the behavior of each species during this transitional period.

Sight fishing for redfish remains productive as water temperatures show signs of a slight rise. Anglers are still quietly poling or wading along shallow grass flats, where redfish can be found tailing or cruising. Crab or shrimp patterns, continue to yield success. With the water temperatures beginning to rise, redfish may become more willing to eat a top water or bait fish imitation.

Blind casting for spotted sea trout into deeper holes and channels remains effective, although anglers may start to notice subtle changes in trout behavior with the slight rise in water temperatures. Continuing to use a

Fly anglers should be prepared to target snook using tactics similar to those employed for redfish. As snook become more active and move onto the flats to feed and warm up, presenting bait fish patterns with accuracy and finesse can lead to exciting and explosive strikes. Snook like to congregate around features that have tidal flow, allowing them to set up and ambush to unsuspecting prey.

March continues to offer excellent fly fishing opportunities along the coastal waters of Tampa Bay and West Central Florida. As water temperatures begin to rise slightly, anglers can expect changes in fish behavior, with redfish, spotted sea trout, and snook becoming more active and moving into shallower waters. Adapting tactics to these changing conditions will be key to continued success. As always, anglers are reminded to practice responsible angling, respect the environment, and release fish responsibly to ensure sustainable fisheries for future generations!

If you have kids, mackerel can entertain them all morning long. Also, remember that redfish and snook are great to catch but sometimes hard to find and slow to bite. Make this April a family affair with the kids by putting them on some fast mackerel action.

Greenback sardines are the best bait for mackerel so have several options buy your bait or catch it which is best it all depends on you. I prefer catching the bait its part of the fishing trip or as I like to saymaking it an adventure for my clients as they are watching how it’s done. Here there are three basic waysto catch bait using the traditional 10-footBait cast net, BallyhoopRing net or theWhyTangle HookTunnel for use with a Sabiki rig. If you can’t throw a net or have a bad back the last two mentions are a great substitute and well worth the investment in the long run.

A Spring Break Fishing Adventure: Exploring the Waters with Tania!

Spring break—a time for relaxation, exploration, and creating unforgettable memories. Tania and I started our week off with a fishing adventure this year. Little did we know that this escapade would take us on a journey filled with unexpected twists and turns, but ultimately, it would leave us with cherished moments to treasure.

Our day began with the first light of dawn as we arrived at the bait shop to pick up some shrimp. A friendly charter captain, who was picking up bait also, asked what we were targeting. I told him whatever would bite but hoped to get some sheepshead. He offered some invaluable advice and a few handfuls of live sandfleas to aid in our quest.

We arrived at the dock, eager to set sail at about 6:45 am. The brisk morning air carried a promise of excitement as we boarded the boat, ready to embrace whatever the day had in store for us. With a gentle breeze and the sun peeking over the horizon, we set our sights on the shimmering

waters ahead.

Our first stop, southeast of Harbor Isle, proved to be fruitless, yielding only catfish. Undeterred, we pressed on, guided by the thrill of exploration. It wasn’t long before we stumbled upon a flurry of activity on the water’s surface—a moment of uncertainty that led to a lively encounter with several ladyfish.

Though the catch wasn’t what we initially sought, the excitement of reeling in these spirited fish fueled our determination—continuing our journey south of Harbor Isle, where we encountered a mixed bag of marine life, from short lane and mutton snapper to a black grouper and a decent croaker. Tania even saw a sea turtle, which made her day.

Despite our efforts, the sheepshead remained elusive, yet our spirits remained high as we embraced the unpredictability of the sea. With the winds picking up around midday, we reluctantly began our journey back to the dock, savoring the final moments on the water.

Wow, how quickly things change.

We went from a very cold February to now a very warm March. The first week March has not only been warm but the fishing has been solid.

I’ve been working every day these first 10 days and pretty much every day has been solid. The finger channels have been holding a number of snappers and plenty of yellow jacks. These are pretty, hard fighting and tasty fish that are a blast to catch.

Bonefishing has been very steady with bones being caught on almost every trip mainly on spinning tackle making it easier on the increasing breeze. The tarpon fishing has been all but dead during the day with very few migratory fish around and a few reports of slow tarpon fishing at night. While this may not be the

other guides. But more importantly, this past week has been great for pretty much anything swimming in Biscayne Bay and this coming week should be the same.

It’s been on fire! This past week has been absolutely solid when it comes to fishing and the weather has been great as well. Water temp have been rising and the fish have been really friendly this week. The first three days of this week were mainly charters to catch whatever was biting and it was so much fun. From snappers, to yellow jacks, sharks and more everything has been biting and proving some really good times.

I have tarpon fished a bit in the mornings but they have been MIA so the day time tarpon fishing is a bust this season so I’ll turn my attention to more productive species and fishing this spring. The balance of the week were spent mainly fishing for bonefish but we missed in some other targets as well.

I had Tom and Wyatt for two days and the guys killed it on the first day with seven bonefish.

we cast our lines with hopeful anticipation, but luck was not on our side. Nevertheless, as we returned to the dock, our hearts were light, accompanied by the satisfaction of a day well spent in the company of nature.

As we unloaded our modest bounty—a prized croaker and a teninch lane snapper—we couldn’t help but reflect on the moments shared and the memories created. Though our spring break fishing adventure may not have unfolded as planned, it was a testament to the beauty of embracing the journey, wherever it may lead.

Ultimately, it wasn’t just about the fish we caught, but the experiences shared, the lessons learned, and our bond strengthened. Tania and I send our best wishes to all fellow anglers, hoping your fishing adventures are safe, blessed, and full of tight lines and good times! Until next time, keep casting and chasing those dreams on the water.

Wow! The following day the bone fishing slowed but we fished the finger channels and they caught yellow jacks and some really nice grouper on bonefish tackle, what a fight! Saturday I had Dan and his friend Michael and we tried for bonefish for about an hour with no success but they caught a bunch of hard fighting ladyfish and sone jacks before heading to the finger channels and having a blast with yellow jacks.

I ended the week with two trips on Sunday, my morning was with Mark and his girlfriend Ryan and they had a blast with hot shark fishing on the flats hooking a lemon shark every 15 minutes it seemed and the afternoon trip was with Pat and Peggy who caught a few different species before turning our attention to bonefish and they killed landing four bonefish, losing to and missing a few more bites. Not bad for a really windy, busy boating Sunday on Biscayne Bay. It’s been a blast this week!

Hogfish action has slowed a bit since the peak of our hog fishing fun in the cooler months, but we are still picking up quite a few near shore.
