12 Most Common Boating Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Even experienced captains make mistakes and can benefit from a refresher on essential boating practices. This ensures you have the best day on the water, confident and prepared. The good news is that you can avoid these 12 common boating blunders with some extra planning and knowledge. Get ready for a smooth sailing adventure!

1. Failing to Check the Marine Weather Forecast

Tuning into marine weather before each trip is a must unless you want to be surprised by gusty winds, rough seas, and sudden storms. And remember, this means marine weather, not regular land-based forecasts, which don’t include sea conditions. To ensure you never encounter this error, check out marine weather apps before leaving the dock.

2. Running Aground

Running aground is a lot more common than you might think and can have varying degrees of severity depending on where you do your boating. On a soft mud or sand bottom, it’s usually no big deal, but in a rocky harbor, hitting the bottom can do some serious damage. The solution? Always be aware of where you are and the local underwater hazards. And when in doubt, reduce your boat’s speeds.

3. Forgetting to Keep Up with Regular Maintenance

This mistake can have serious consequences, especially for your boat’s propulsion systems.

4. Hitting the Dock

Docking mastery is critical! Even with perfect planning, unexpected issues like power loss can arise, risking your boat hitting the dock. Knowing how to dock your boat skillfully prepares you to handle any situation and ensures a smooth arrival.

5. Running Out of Gas

This is one of the most common mistakes that boaters make. Remember that factors like sea conditions and load can change fuel consumption and your boat’s range. In addition, fuel gauge readings can change as fuel sloshes in the tank, and the fuel gauges on boats are often less reliable than those found in automobiles.

As a result, boaters should stick with the following formula:

• Use one-third of fuel capacity going out.

• Use one-third coming back.

• Save one-third in reserve.

6. Forgetting to Put in the Drain Plug

This is another mistake that could be more familiar to many boaters, especially trailerboaters, who commonly remove the plug between uses. Check out our article on How to Launch a Boat, which includes tips to help you avoid other common launching mistakes.

7. Overloading the Boat

This miscalculation can be downright dangerous, so always keep track of the weight of people and gear when loading the boat. If you haven’t memorized your boat’s maximum capacity requirements, check the capacity plate to ensure you’re in the safe zone

8. Getting Lost

Although this happens less and less on the water thanks to modern marine electronics and navigation instruments, it still happens. Electrical systems can have issues, so you should always know your location and how to get home, regardless of what electronics you have aboard. If your boat doesn’t have navigation gear, consider adding a marine navigation app to your phone, which can be used as a mini-chart plotter.

9. Putting Out Insufficient Anchor Line

Anchoring a boat seems simple: drop down the anchor, cleat off the line, and the boat will stay put, right? Not necessarily. Even in calm seas, the anchor may pull free if you don’t let out enough line to match three times the depth. In a breeze, a “scope” (length of anchor line) of 5:1 or 7:1, compared to water depth, is considered minimal. When it’s rough out, 10:1 may be necessary.

10. Running the Engine Dry

Most marine engines (excluding air-cooled and electric engines) require water for cooling purposes. Water cools the engine and lubricates the water pump impeller commonly found in most marine propulsion systems. Run a boat motor while it’s on dry land without a sufficient

water supply, and it will overheat, the impeller will be damaged, or both.

11. Improperly Mooring the Boat

The most common issue here is failing to learn a proper cleat hitch. Then, one might be left standing on the dock, watching the boat float away. Of course, tying up correctly in a slip is also important to ensure the boat doesn’t bang the dock or pilings.

12. Trailering with the Engine Down and/or Top Up

Prepping a boat for trailering is an important task, and two things that people sometimes make mistakes with include the engine tilt and Bimini tops. In both cases, they shouldn’t be left in the up position. Engines tilted all the way up can bounce and sway, putting much pressure on the boat’s transom. If the trailer allows the engine to be tilted down, great. If not, a “transom saver” bracket that supports and secures the outboard is a must. And when it comes to Bimini tops, remember that they aren’t designed to withstand 60 MPH winds. Rather than being left up, a convertible top should always be taken down and secured for highway speeds.

How Long Do You Really Need an EPIRB?

For some boaters, it’s 10 days according to BoatUS Foundation beacon rental program statistics

SPRINGFIELD, Va., March 25, 2024 – The majority of the nation’s nearly 12 million recreational boaters don’t often travel far offshore, beyond cellular or VHF range. But for those who only do on a rare occasion, having an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) is important, allowing you to summon rescuers if there’s a dire emergency. However, with beacons priced at around $600-$700, the device may not always be within the family budget. That’s where the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water EPIRB/PLB rental program fills a critical safety gap.

According to Foundation EPIRB rental program statistics, the average beacon rental length is 10 days, with peak season May through August.

“Our typical customer is the recreational boater who seldom travels out of sight of land but now needs a beacon, typically for a weeklong sailing race or fishing tournament, or they’ve selected a route that takes them far from the safety net of standard communications means. They usually add on a few days to the rental for round-trip shipping,” says BoatUS Foundation Director of Boating Safety Ted Sensenbrenner.

A 10-day EPIRB rental costs $120 and includes shipping. Added Sensenbrenner, “Maybe it’s a boater’s first trip to the Bahamas. We’ve also had renters entered in the Newport Bermuda Race, Newport to Ensenada, CYC Race to Mackinac, WaterTribe Everglades Challenge, R2AK and other adventure-type races on water as well as ashore, as we also rent Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs).” A Foundation 10-day PLB rental is $91 with shipping included.

The Foundation maintains and tests beacons to U.S. Coast Guard and manufacturer standards. Renting units is simple: Go to BoatUS.org/EPIRB/Rentals and provide the vessel registration and description, trip itinerary, and emergency contact information. EPIRBs are registered to BoatUS Foundation so there is no need to contact NOAA. In case of an activation, Coast Guard watchstanders and search agencies are provided this critical information by the 24-hour BoatUS Emergency Dispatch Center. Since 1997, the BoatUS Foundation rental program has had 28 EPIRB activations and 69 lives have been saved.

Sensenbrenner adds that beacons are a critical lifesaving device, and for boaters planning to go offshore more frequently, buying your own EPIRB is a better option.

BoatClass Expands to More Than 30 Locations for the 2024 Boating Season

METTAWA, Ill. – March 19, 2024 – BoatClass, a leading provider of certified on-water boater training and a business within Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC), today announced its expansion to more than 30 locations for the 2024 boating season, in partnership with Freedom Boat Club.

“Safety is a top priority for Brunswick and across all of our industry-leading brands,” said Rob Schuldt, who leads the BoatClass program. “Through BoatClass, we are excited to expand our fully immersive onwater training program to even more markets in 2024, providing more access for first-time boaters and those who seek greater confidence behind the helm. Our goal is to expand participation and strengthen the boating community.”

BoatClass offers a combination of online virtual training and on-water training designed to teach boating safety to all boaters. Since its initial launch in 2021, BoatClass has grown from a handful of locations to more than 30 Freedom Boat Club locations across North America.

BoatClass offers participants a three-hour on-water basic boater training course led by a Certified US Coast Guard (or equivalent certification) Captain. BoatClass utilizes the same training methods that have been successful for decades throughout the Freedom Boat Club network. The program helps participants master techniques such as, shifting and throttle control; turning, stopping, backing drills; 360- to 720-degree pivot turns; docking drills; crossing wakes; speed zone adjustments; anchoring theory and techniques; utilizing boat trim; ferrying; and returning to the slip.

Additionally, as part of the partnership with Freedom Boat Club, after completing their BoatClass course, 2024 graduates will be eligible for a reduced entry fee offer, available within 30 days of graduating and applicable to the club they graduated from if they chose to become a Freedom member.

Garlic Roasted Florida Shrimp and Blueberry BBQ Sauce

Ingredients

• 12 jumbo Florida shrimp, peeled and deveined with the tail on

• 2 tablespoons Florida Blueberry BBQ Sauce

• 1 tablespoon Florida seafood seasoning blend, divided

• 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

• 1 lemon, half juiced, half sliced for garnish

• 1 tablespoon fresh herbs (parsley, oregano, thyme), chopped fine

• 1 tablespoon fresh garlic, minced

• Several dashes of Florida-made hot sauce, to taste

• Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Preparation:

Preheat a large cast iron pan over medium-high heat.

Add half the butter to the preheated pan.

Carefully add the shrimp to the pan one at a time, giving them some space to cook.

Season the shrimp with half of the seasoning blend.

Cook the shrimp without moving them for 2 minutes, then using tongs, carefully flip each shrimp.

Add another pinch of the seasoning blend, garlic and fresh herbs.

After cooking for another 2 minutes, add the rest of the butter, lemon juice and several dashes of hot sauce.

Stir ingredients to coat and remove from heat.

Taste and adjust seasoning with salt, pepper and any leftover seasoning blend.

Serve warm with Florida Blueberry BBQ Sauce and lemon slices on the side.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the openair benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. Spring Fishing Continues to be Awesome

Here in Bradenton and Anna Maria Island spring is here in full force and so are the spring breakers and snow birds. We have been experiencing great weather for the most part with the occasional strong cold front around. The fishing has been awesome with perfect spring time water temperatures lately and lots of happy guests on our fishing charters. Easter is right around the corner and the fishing will get even better.

On our inshore fishing charters we have mainly been targeting snook, redfish, spotted seatrout, and Spanish mackerel. With the snook and redfish we are having good success with an incoming tide on the shallow grass flats close to mangrove shorelines and islands. Once the tide is high enough we are fishing as close to the mangroves

as possible to present our baits in the deep undercuts. For the spotted seatrout and Spanish mackerel we are having the most luck on the grass flats and scattered grass patches in Tampa Bay in about five to ten feet of water. We have also encountered plenty of ladyfish, some jack crevelle, and small lemon sharks. We are primarily fishing with live pilchards. The bait has been at the skyway fishing piers and also showing up on some of the shallow grass flats at the mouth of the Manatee River.

Just off the beaches of Anna Maria Island and out a couple miles into the Gulf of Mexico we are starting to see the migratory king mackerel show up around some of the artificial reefs and areas of live hard bottom that are

Inshore Fishing Report

Snook action is the cornerstone of our inshore report right now! They have moved back into our passes and onto the beaches HARD lately. Now we are a long way from the inundation of the snook like we see most of our summer, but we are definitely seeing good concentrations of fish at the peak feeding times around the solunar major and minors. I find around the pass they are most active in the wee hours of the morning. If you are able to get out before sunrise around 4-7am you are going to have the best luck at finding cooperative fish, especially if you coincide that with one of the major or minor solunars.

Redfish action concentrating a bit lately with more schooling fish being found around the area. We are finding more around the area structures and such too. Often we are find a handful around the docks of the passes using live shrimp on the bottom.

Trout action still holding out with some nice fish being found despite the warming water temps. Great time to get out there and try and find some trout in the

3-4ft range as they push a bit deeper with warming waters. We are also finding a good number of them at night around the dock lights and bridge lights of local passes too.

holding a good amount of bait. Accompanying the king mackerel are Spanish mackerel, bluefish, blacktip sharks, cobia, and bonita. This can be action packed fishing and these fish are all great fun on light tackle. We are using the same live pilchards to catch these fish. Once we locate them we live chum in hopes of creating a feeding frenzy. When this happens it is an unforgettable sight.

Pompano are biting well, but extremely sporadic around the area. We see them on the sandy edges of the flats, but also around the sandy passes, and along our beautiful beaches too! They are caught with live shrimp on the bottom, but most commonly the pompano jigs are used to target them on the beaches and around the bay area bridges, piers and jetties.

Tarpon are showing up in decent numbers around the bay area bridges tackling the white bait mostly lately. We are seeing them on big threadfins and also the live crabs. Great time to go get you an early in the year tarpon before they become more heavily targeted.

Sharks are becoming more and more common around the area too, we are starting to see more of the smaller sharks as waters warm. In the cooler months we still have plenty of sharks, but they are more spread out and typically much larger. As the water warms, we see a flood of the smaller juvenile sharks and much more concentrated pockets of sharks!

Mackerel action is really thick around the area. We are seeing a lot of mackerel around the piers, jetties, and passes. Even some deeper flats are holding mackerel with lots of baits present and moving water. Spring Fishing

A lot has happened since the last report. Overall sailfish season has been below average this year, but it has not been terrible. We have been consistently putting our clients on sailfish on almost a daily basis, what has not happened is many of the 5 to 10 releases per day. It has been mostly 2 -3 releases a day but now we are stating to see the numbers improve. Just a couple of day ago we went 11 for 17 on sailfish with one angler. Many said it was due to the El Nino weather pattern we have had this year. Experts are already agreeing that El Nino is weakening, and it will be over very soon, if not already. There were a few times this year though, that the sailfishing exploded. There were two days in February where records were shattered. There were at least three boats with over 60 sailfish releases that day. We had a swordfish trip that day and we attempted to go swordfishing despite trying to talk my client into sailfishing instead. After we made it to the sword grounds, the seas steadily increased from 5 to 8 ft to 10 -13 feet. At that point we pulled the plug and headed in.

On the way in, I called some friends that were sailfishing and everyone told me to get to the edge and put out the kites as there was a phenomenal sailfish bite going on. We ran in, called the bait guy and bought more bait to supplement what we had. By the time we did all this and got to the edge it was 1:30pm. No more than 30 seconds of getting set up we saw some tailing sailfish and caught a few. The next hour and 45 minutes we caught 17 sailfish. I only wish we had been there all day, who knows how many we could have caught. March and April have been the best months for sailfishing in Miami the past few years and I’m sure this year will follow the same pattern.

We have also had quite a few daytime swordfish charters. We have been very successful with the daytime trips catching at least one swordfish on every trip but one. Our best was about 275 pounds which is a decent size swordfish. We have also been doing a few daytime trips without the use of electric reels. We are using a 50W Penn reel with a custom Biscayne Rod loaded with 50-pound Sufix braid. We use a 200-pound wind on leader crimped with a bait. We attach a 3 lb.

Spring Break 2024 -Good bite going on!

3/12-14/24 - Last week was pretty good, Mike Drippe and his son Quinton had some great Fishing over 3 days in Everglades National Park. Tarpon, Snook, Redfish, Trout, Goliath Groupers, Sharks, Tripletails, Jacks, Ladyfish, and Snappers. We hooked Tarpon from 30 lbs. to @110 lbs. with Quinton catching the big one. The Tarpon bite has been good, but some days you have to look for them! Quinton weighs in at 90 lbs. and he caught Tarpon and Sharks that outweighed him. He also caught a Goliath Grouper that’s was @ 45 lbs. His dad Mike caught his share, but it was Quintons opportunity to catch fish of a lifetime. We got a SLAM or GRAND SLAM every day, very impressive!

3/17/24 - I am fishing with Dr. Jason and future son in law Sammy. We had a very good day, they caught Snook, Trout, Redfish, Sammy jumped a Tarpon and caught a few big Lemon Sharks. Dr Jason had a few Snook, Redfish and Trout for a Slam! They also caught numerous Ladyfish, Jacks, Snappers and of course Catfish.

3/19/24 - Paul and his son Davis were staying in Key Largo. Paul’s brother Tony is a good friend and told how fish crazy Davis was. He also told me He wanted a big Tarpon. I told him it was the right time and we set up the trip. We got to the marina at 6:15 am, it was still dark. While I was getting ready to launch the boat, I handed him a rod and told him go catch a Tarpon. It was rigged with

a NLBN 3-inch paddle tail in white. He jumped a couple Tarpon, by the time I got over to him he needed help landing the fish. I pulled up and jumped on dock and grabbed the Tarpon. We are on our way to a SLAM. On our first spot we got a couple Snook, and we needed a Redfish. It actually got colder as the morning went on and a front passing thru the winds picked up and 25 mph but eventually slowed down. We bounced around all day and found fish everywhere. At the end of the day, we had Tarpon, Redfish, Snook, Trout, Shark, Jacks and a few missed fish that would have put us over the top. It was late and we will be back tomorrow!

3/20/24 - We started off day 2 the same way except we are fishing backcountry today. Davis started with a Tarpon while I was launching the boat. Our first stop was for a couple small Ladyfish, the Tarpon have been eating them. We set up our first drift and it didn’t take long; we were hooked up with a jumping Tarpon 50 yards behind the boat. It was very violent, the circle hook got twisted in the bait. Fish is gone and back to drifting. I could see they were getting bored and said let’s go see if we can get a Snook or Redfish and we will come back. We went to a little spot that’s been really good lately, but not today. There are 3 points in a small bay, they all hold fish, although not at same time! We missed a fish on spot

lead on the windon on leader and an 8-pound sacrificial steel weight that falls off once we hit the bottom. The 8 pound plus the 3 pound is enough to reach bottom and once on the bottom and the 8-pound steel falls off, the 3-pound lead is enough to keep it on the bottom. Now you can fight your fish in a harness with only a 3-pound lead attached and not a 10-pound lead. We do this for our clients that do not want to use electric reels as well as clients that are trying to complete their Billfish Slam (catching all species of billfish) and keeping it withing IGFA rules. We have worked hard at developing this technique and now have complete confidence in it.

Now that are in April, we are seeing more and more blackfin tunas. For the past 2 weeks we have been consistent catching one or two blackfins per trip. Now we should start seeing more and more tunas well into May. Sailfishing has also improved and will only get better. Add a few big smoker kingfish and some big mahis and we have spring fishing in full effect.

1 and 2 but got a Snook and Redfish on spot 3. We are a Trout away from a Grand Slam! I go to a really good Trout spot and get the Trout in 5 minutes also a monster of a Tarpon. The Tarpon ate a NLBN Orane Head and white body paddle tail right next to the boat. Davis is yelling he is spooling us. Of course, it was on the lightest rod in the boat with a short leader. The first run was 200 yards and never came up, it took 35 minutes before it jumped. Davis did a good job, but odds were against us. 1 hour and 20 minutes later the line hit some and broke. We had it next to the boat 10 times, but it was powerful, and didn’t want to play anymore. The rest of the day was just catching fish and having fun.

3/21/24 - I fished with Mitch and Jill today. We started out with Jill catching a couple Snook and Mitch had something pick up his NLBN and run about 100 yards. We were just out bending the rods and had some Tarpon blow up a school of mullet, I had Mitch cast a NLBN K -Tail. Mitch put it in the boil where Tarpon blew up. The rod doubled over but it was a Jack. There were a few more blow ups but no Tarpon hook ups. They caught a bunch of Trout, Jacks and Ladyfish also.
