Gulf Harbour Marina Celebrates Grand Reopening

On March 27, 2024, over 270 slip owners and yacht club members celebrated the completion of the $6 M repair and replacement of Gulf Harbour Marina located in south Fort Myers, Florida.

The marina sustained substantial damage from Hurricane Ian on September 28, 2022. Hurricane Ian destroyed four main docks and the fuel dock. The remaining five docks were badly damaged and not usable. Four boats sank. The marina lost power, pump out and water to all slips. Most of the boats not damaged had to find dockage elsewhere for up to 18 months. With this grand reopening, most have now returned.

The board of directors under the leadership of President Dana Snyder immediately authorized Snyder to begin the process of removing the destroyed docks and pilings while at the same time contacting dock manufacturers and marina construction companies. This forward vision of the Gulf Harbour Marina Board through its President Snyder, who personally dedicated countless hours of attention to every detail, allowed GHM to become one the first heavily damaged marinas to fully recover and “get up and running” following hurricane Ian.

Gulf Harbour Marina resumed selling fuel two weeks ago following the reconstruction of a new fuel dock featuring gas and diesel fuel at some of the most competitive prices on the Caloosahatchee River. The evening of celebration was kicked off with a welcoming by board President Doug Duncan. Past President Dana Snyder gave special recognition of the suppliers and contractors that made the recovery possible. They include Gulf Harbour Yacht and County Club, Midcoast Marine Group, Lincoln Marine, Acra Electric, Guardian Fueling Technologies, Sea Diversified Inc, Golden Marina Systems and Parsons Landscaping Service.

President Duncan then gave special recognition to past board member Tracy White and past president Dana Snyder for the efforts immediately following the hurricane, with special thanks for Dana’s continued efforts in rebuilding the marina. As small token of appreciation, Dana and his wife Cathy were presented a prepaid American Express gift card from the slip owners.

A catered meal provided by Global Event Management followed the ceremony along with entertainment by the band“41 South”. Guests were also able to tour a number of boats provided by MarineMax during the evening.

Hurricane Ian destroyed much of the marine community in SW Florida, but Gulf Harbour Marina is proud to help lead the boating community back to days of enjoyment on the water.

Florida Clam Linguine with Escarole

Ingredients

1 pound fresh Florida clams

1 head Florida escarole, rinsed and chopped

12 ounces linguine (or your favorite pasta)

3 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 tablespoons fresh garlic, minced

Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes

2 tablespoons fresh parsley, hand torn

½ cup dry white wine

1 lemon, juiced (plus more sliced for garnish)

Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Parmesan cheese to taste, freshly grated

Preparation:

Cook the linguine as directed on its package, making sure to reserve 1 cup of the cooking liquid before draining the pasta.

While the pasta is cooking, preheat a large sauté pan over medium heat. Add the unsalted butter, garlic, parsley and pepper flakes. Cook the ingredients while stirring for 2 minutes. Carefully add the Florida clams and wine. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook for 7 to 10 minutes.

Remove the lid and discard any unopened clams. Add the cooked linguine and escarole to the sauté pan with the clams. Stir and continue to cook for about 3 minutes. Add a small amount of the reserved pasta water until the desired consistency is reached. Squeeze in the fresh lemon juice and stir. Taste and adjust seasoning with sea salt and fresh ground pepper.

Serve warm with extra sliced lemon and grated Parmesan cheese.

Boat Diving Board Considerations

Calmer waters allow for more flexibility in board choice, while rougher conditions demand sturdier models. Snook Bite is On

May is the time of year the Mr. Snook, aka saltwater bass, makes his debut coming out from the creeks, rivers, and marina basins ready to eat anything insight. When this happens,the bite depends on the water temperature, so it could be anytime from mid-April, but it will happen.

Snook are creatures of habit, and if you’ve done your homework over the years (keeping a fishing log) of whenwhere-how, you will have a good idea where to start. If not, here’s some food for thought.

Early May look for snook around the mouths of rivers.Little Manatee River is one good snook spot. You will find snook staged up around the bends where the water flow has formed some deep holes.They will sit and wait for the bait as itis pushed by the tide. The start of the outgoing tide has been most productive for me.

Double Branch is another hot spot in May, because as the water rushes out all the bait fish and small crabs along the oyster bars become a feeding ground for snook and nice redfish.

As the weather warms mid-April or later, they will make their way to the mangrove flats fattening up for mating season which starts around the first full moon in May.

Techniques: Early May or late April fishing the mouths of rivers or creeks I prefer to use

medium live shrimp free lined unless the current is strong then I will put a #4 split shot about eight inches above the hook to slow the drift of the shrimp. Cast up current and let the shrimp drift into the deeper water and continue to feed line allowing the shrimp to act naturally until it passes the bend.

May the snook should have made their way to the mangrove flats and start feeding on live sardines (green back-scaled sardines) getting aggressive on their bite. Don’t overlook any structure like exposed rocks or around oyster beds, as they tend to radiate heat quicker and warm the water around them, which acts like a magnet for snook.Cool water slows their bite, and they prefer not chasing a fast-running sardine if they can some live shrimp sometimes can make your morning bite until the sun takes over.

Again, we are depended on the weather and water temperature, as this can change their mood. If the weather stays colder longer than usual, live shrimp will still be your best bait.Our climate is changing, and I have noticed that we have had cold snaps in midAprilwhich dictates their mood.

Top water plugs like MirrOlure skin series surface walker mullet work great in the early morning once they move into the flats. I find they work best when the water temperature is

TARPON FISHING & MORE!

Tarpon and sharks have shown up in the backcountry and I’m also seeing tarpon off the beaches.

As is the norm for this time of year tarpon and sharks have shown in the backcountry in 3-5’ of water. They seem to come to the same spots in the same bays every year. Cut bait works best. Mackerel is my favorite but ladyfish and jacks work finer also.

Lemon and bull sharks are the most prevalent but black tips, nurse and on a rare occasion hammer heads.

It’s a little early this year but I have started to see the migratory tarpon off the beaches and on some of the white sand shoals. The other day the water was gin clear and you could see the tarpon coming for hundreds of feet over the

Flies work for these fish along with crabs and live big eye shiners. I use 30-50lb braided line with a 6080lb fluorocarbon leader. Good casts and patience is important but once you’ve hooked up it’s always quite a show with the acrobatics of the silver kings.

I’m also starting to see snook

along the edges off the beaches and they’re becoming more prevalent in the passes and adjacent bays.

Redfish have also become more prevalent with many of the reds under slot, which is 18-27’ but we are catching some keepers.

Overall the fishing is getting better and will continue thru April then my favorite months May & June.

Tarpon have shown off the beaches as well some backcountry bays and some in the passes.

The annual tarpon spring migration has started with tarpon starting to move up the beaches from the south. Where do the tarpon come from is still somewhat of a mystery but some come from the Florida Keys and points beyond.

By mid summer tarpon fishing happens as far north as the Florida pan handle, Louisiana, Alabama and even Texes.

Tarpon, also known as the silver king, is an interesting fish they can be very spooky and wary and tough to catch.

Southwest Coast West Central Florida

above 75 degrees. Fish are always on the side, the sun’s rays hit the water first, as that is where they tend to get their morning heat and feed the best. From mid-morning on I will switch to Saltwater Assassin, either silver mullet split tail or my favorite Little P & V in Glow/Lime on a 1/8-ounce jig head worked along the edges of the mangroves this technique catches snook, reds and mangrove snapper.

Dead Cut Bait:

As the water temperature increases the big snook slows down and prefers fresh cut bait to me. Nothing works better than fresh cut threadfin sardines or pinfish. I use a 2/0 or 3/0 Kahle hook with a #4 split shot about 3-inches from the hook and just let it sit on the bottom. Some drawbacks are you will catch some catfish and rays but if it’s a snook or redfish it will be a big one.

Locally when fishing for tarpon off the beaches we get in about 10’ of water and use live crabs for bait. Pinfish, pilchards and squirrel fish can also be used when tarpon fishing.

Fishing for tarpon in the backcountry can be tricky but cut bait seems to work the best. When tarpon fishing ion the backcountry it’s not uncommon to catch sharks also. Black tips, bulls sharks, lemon sharks and an occasional hammer head can be caught.

When tarpon are hooked they typically jump numerous times and take off in long runs. We use 8’ rods with 30-50lb braided line with a 6’ piece of 60-80lb fluorocarbon leader.

Memories: Adventures on the Water with Salt Strong!

I had trouble sleeping Friday night in anticipation of fishing on the Salt Strong boat in the morning.

I was like a kid on Christmas Eve. We were to meet up at 7:30 am for breakfast, and then we planned to head out on the boats at about 8:00 am. It was also announced during supper that there would be a tournament for bragging rights between the chapter presidents. This added to my excitement.

I showed up at Chief Eddie’s cottage around 7:15 am, and there was a complete production line making breakfast and sack lunches. There was someone cooking eggs, a few people were making the sandwiches, and I helped Stan put the breakfast sandwiches together.

Once we had completed preparing breakfasts and lunches, we all gathered up at the docks. Luke was ready to get going; however, two of the boats were delayed due to charging issues and having to replace batteries.

Since our boat was fishing with only artificial baits, Luke decided we would get a head start and left at 8:00 am even though the other boats were delayed. Luke planned to start at a spot where he had seen many egrets along the shore the night before. With the current winds, the water was pushing out, which made the tide much lower than anticipated and made this spot a little challenging to get to; however, we managed to get there and started working the shoreline when another boat jumped in front of us in the direction we were working. Since we did not see any life at this first spot and the other boat was in front of us, Luke decided to push to another spot.

The next spot was a large oyster bar; however, the low tide made it impossible to reach, so we had to move on to another spot. We ran to Crab Creek and started working the west shoreline north past Banna Creek. With five of us throwing baits, we were covering all our bases. Once again, we did not see much life, but we kept working. When we got near the end of Crab Creek, we saw what we thought were dolphins, which was disappointing since we did not have a fish on the boat yet, but we continued to work the mangroves.

When we got closer, we realized it was not dolphins in the creek but a bunch of manatee mating. I felt like we were in a

nature documentary when we saw them all splashing around. There was one dock at the end of the creek, where I had my first bite of the day. I had a gold digger colored power prawn jr. with a 1/4oz football jig, and a snook thumped it pretty good. After a few seconds of pulling drag, my leader broke below the knot. I was so disappointed I had just lost a massive snook, but it was equipment failure and not my fault.

I retied a new 20lb leader on my main line and then switched to a slam shady 2.0 with a Owner Twistlock 3/0 hook as we finished working Crab Creek. Our next spot we worked was the shoreline of Dickman Isle. This is where we started to see life, and the bite started to pick up. In this area, Luke landed three trout ranging from 14 to 16 inches, a short snook, and a ladyfish. Cathy also caught a small Crocker, which we threw into the live well to use back at the dock later in the evening. Almost as quickly as the bite turned on, it turned off.

It was after 11:00 am, so we made the run back to the dock to pick up our packed lunches since we departed before the lunches were finished. We picked up our lunches, headed to Cockroach Bay, and focused on catching more fish. This plan panned out well, as we all caught lots of trout while drifting the flats. We had fun pulling in the trout but pivoted to seeking some snook and redfish.

Luke had a plan to run to a spot he knew would hold some fish, but as we started to make the run across the bay, the winds kicked up, and we started seeing whitecaps, so Luke chose not to make the run, and we headed back to Crab Creek. With the tide coming in our hopes, there was enough water to get to some spots we could not earlier.

As we moved into Crab Creek, we ran into the group of manatees again. This time, it was much closer to the mouth of the creek. This spot did not produce any snook or redfish for us, but my brother, Chris, from the Nature Coast Chapter, lost a very nice flounder as he tried to bring it on the boat. He kept blaming the net man, but I was still able to give him a hard time as he gave it to me for losing my snook.

Once we exhausted this area, we ran back to the dock. We were unsure when we had to be back for the weigh-in. Since we

weren’t sure, we headed back at about 4:00 p.m. As we came into the canal, we decided to try our luck. Not far into the canal, I had another snook on; this time, my FG knot failed. I was frustrated as, this time, it was my fault for the loss. Although I did tie a good FG knot, casting it in the mangroves all day, something compromised my knot and made it weak. Next time, I will check my knots more frequently to avoid losing a fish like that again.

Since none of the other boats returned, we returned to fish more mangroves. Unfortunately, the rest of the afternoon was unproductive. It was a long, hard day fishing with the winds, but I had a blast and learned a lot from Luke.

We ended the day with a surf and turf meal. Between all the boats, we only brought back three trout. I had brought a snook fillet, and Salt Strong provided the steaks and potatoes. Darlene made a great stew, which everyone loved. After supper, the winners of the tournament were announced. Terry from the Sports Coast Chapter landed the largest snook, and Glen from the Sarasota Chapter took the largest trout and redfish. However, Rodney Durant from the Alabama Chapter caught a larger redfish Friday morning, so he gave him the plaque.

In the end, it wasn’t about the plaques or the bragging rights but about the moments spent in the company of fellow anglers, the laughter shared, and the knowledge gained. As we bid farewell to another day on the water, I carried with me not only the memories of the day’s adventure but also a renewed appreciation for the beauty and unpredictability of nature and the unwavering fellowship of the Salt Strong community.

The FLA is not just a club for professional anglers, they are promoting saltwater lure fishing at all levels, especially among beginners. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemicfree aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. After successful inspection you are awarded a vessel safety check sticker which is affixed to your vessel near your state registration sticker.
