On-water assistance is what Sea Tow® has been doing for 40+ years. With boats located in 500+ ports nationwide, local Sea TowCaptains are standing-by 24/7. No one ever plans on needing help on the water, so when the unexpected happens, having an annual towing membership is so important.
A huge misconception among boaters is that a SeaTow membership is part of a boat insurance policy. Sea Tow membership is never part of an insurance policy. Sea Tow is independent, which meansnever submitting insurance claims for service, no unexpected out-ofpocket costs, and no confusion on coverage.
How does membership differ from boat insurance?
A Sea Tow membership is not insurance. Your local Sea Tow Captain will come to your aid when things go wrong – provide a tow, deliver fuel or jump start your battery so you can get back on your way. Helping to ensure your safety is a job that we take seriously.
Boat insurance is intended to protect significant investments –your boat, electronics, and gear, becausedisasters strike when you least expect it. It gives you the
means to repair or replace the boat you’ve worked so hard to acquire.
Maintaining a Sea Tow membership as well as a boat insurance policy makes sense – because the two are intended to work together to ensure your boating needs are covered in unforeseen situations.
What benefits does Sea Tow membership provide that towing coverage bundled with insurance does not?
Sea Tow is simple – you know what you’re covered for with no fine print and no claims to file for the service that you receive. Sea Tow members have Peace of Mind on the Water™ because they know who is coming to help and when, plus so much more:
• Members get priority service over non-members.
• No unexpected out-of-pocket costs and no reimbursements to submit.
• Towing to the port of your choice within your home area, not just the closest one.
• Sea Tow Captains routinely arrive in under 1-hour.
• Unlimited towing with no distance or dollar limits in your home area.
• Dock-to-dock towing coverage up to 25-miles to a repair facility from
your home port on all your covered vessels.
It’s never a question of IF, it’s a question of WHEN boaters will need assistance.
When it matters, and you’re stranded on the water, you don’t just want coverage – you want the BEST coverage – which means an annual Sea Tow membership.
For less than $21/month a Sea Tow membership will be the best investment you spend on your boat every year. Become a member today.

Learning how to prepare for a hurricane can be intimidating and a little bit frightening, especially in a midst of a storm approaching. If you own a boat anywhere along the East Coast or the along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, you’ll likely have to deal with some direct or indirect effects associated with a hurricane.
Being proactive and getting prepared before the hurricane or tropical storm hits is extremely important—not only for the safety of you and your loved ones, but also for the safety of your boat.
In this post, we’ll explain how you can prepare yourself and your boat for an impending hurricane. We’ll also share tips for safety and boat recovery after a hurricane hits.
Preparedness
1. Stay informed and up-to-date on weather reports.
2. Trailer your boat, and head inland to a safer region that is out of reach from the storm.
3. If you can’t transport your boat out of the area, then prepare to batten down the hatches.
4. Remove anything that’s not permanently part of the boat.
5. Apply extra fenders and double up on your normal dock line usage.
6. Check that all hatches and portholes are secure.
7. Drop an anchor fore and aft.
8. Evacuate to a safe location.
4 Tips for Hurricane Safety: How to Prepare Your Boat
1. Stay Informed
One of the reasons that boaters love being out on the water is that it helps them destress and get away from life’s everyday troubles. However, if you live an area that’s exposed to hurricanes (or other extreme weather conditions), you need to be aware of upcoming storms.
To stay updated on upcoming storm systems, download a reliable weather app, such as The Weather Channel, Dark Sky Weather, or AccuWeather. Of all the things you can do to keep safe when you’re in the path of a hurricane, advance warning is, by far, the most effective.
2. Get Out Of The Way
For most recreational powerboats, many times the best solution is to pull the vessel and head inland. This reduces the impact of the initial storm surge and the accompanying rain and hurricane force wind. The sooner you do this the better, because there will be many people who either don’t or can’t move their boats in advance. They will be the ones
jammed onto back roads and highways when mandatory evacuation orders are issued.
3. Batten Down The Hatches
For boats that can’t be moved, it’s time to go old-school mariner and batten down those hatches. That phrase has survived modern times because it precisely describes what you need to do in a crisis situation.
• First, remove anything that’s not permanently part of the boat. That means cushions, toasters, life jackets, curtain rods and anything else that would fall off if the boat gets sideways. If you leave these items aboard, you not only risk losing them for good, but you could create dangerous projectiles for anyone or anything nearby during the worst parts of the storm.
• Use plenty of extra fenders, used tires, or anything else that will absorb impact and lash them to the boat.
• Quadruple your normal line usage, springing to any and all potential contact points.
• Check that all hatches and portholes are secure and detach or cover windscreens.
• Drop an anchor fore and aft and ensure they’re well set.
4. Don’t Try To “Ride” Out the Storm
When a storm is approaching, some boaters try to ride out the storm on their boat in open water. Although you may think this sounds better than evacuating or securing your boat, this won’t help you or your boat stay safe during hurricane winds and rain.
Although as boaters, our boats become an important part of our lifestyles and identities, they aren’t worth our safety. They can always be replaced, and you should put your personal safety first in the event of a hurricane.
Once the hurricane has passed, it’s time to move into recovery mode. Below, you’ll find tips for safely recovering your boat and the necessary next steps you should take.
1. Follow Flood Warnings: Don’t drive in flooded waters or ignore local flood advisories. Although it’s understandable that you want to start repairing your boat, it’s crucial that you do so safely. Once you’re cleared to go check on your boat, be aware of fallen power lines, debris, and other obstacles in your path.
2. Be Careful in Floodwater: If you have to be in floodwater, it’s crucial to wear a life jacket at all times. As you likely know, having a life jacket on your boat is crucial, so you should have it on-hand anyways.
3. Wash Your Hands and Treat Injuries Immediately: Floodwater can contain dangerous bacteria and chemicals that may put your health in danger. If you’re exposed to floodwater, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and clean water. In addition, if you suffer any wounds or injuries, get them treated as soon as possible.
4. Review Your Boat Insurance Policy: Most likely, you have some type of boat insurance policy in place. These policies typically cover boat damage caused by a hurricane, so you can rest easy. However, it’s still important to review your insurance policy to fully understand what your policy covers.
5. Gather Necessary Supplies: As you prepare to repair and clean your boat after a storm, you should gather supplies that will make the process easier. These items include trash bags to dispose of debris, boots and gloves to move about your boat, duct tape to secure any cracks or broken parts, and cleaning supplies.
6. Assess Your Boat for Damages: Before you check out your boat, confirm that your marina is open, docks are fixed, and that it is safe to visit. Once you receive confirmation, check on your boat as soon as possible. Remember to bring proof of boat ownership, as some marinas deal with looters after a hurricane.
7. Immediately Remove Moisture and Dirt: To avoid further issues, begin removing any mud, moisture, and debris from the boat. This will prevent mold and permanent damage.
8. Check the Boat for Structural Damage, Leaks, and System Issues: Next, you should check the bilge to ensure that the boat hasn’t experienced any underwater damage, and identify any problems with the engine fuel systems, bilge pump, electronic systems, and other parts of the boat. Although you may be able to fix some issues yourself, it’s best to record damage for your insurance company.
9. Preparing for the Worst: How to Handle a Sunk or Beached Boat: No boater wants to prepare for it, but you should consider how you’ll handle an unsalvageable or extremely damaged boat. Again, all damage should be documented for your insurance company, and you should contact them to determine next steps.
Conclusion
Preparing for hurricane season isn’t a fun topic for boaters, but it’s one that is crucial to keep in mind. Protecting your boat, and yourself, is paramount, and you’ll have peace of mind if you have a plan in place for before and after the storm.

Ingredients
• 4 (6-ounce) Florida mahi-mahi fillets
• 1 large Florida mango, peeled and chopped (seed removed)
• 1 fresh Florida chili pepper, sliced (for heat if desired)
• 2 Florida eggs
• 2 teaspoons Asian 7 spice blend (or Chinese 5 spice blend)
• 2 teaspoons vegetable oil, divided
• 4 cups pre-cooked rice (leftover rice is the best to use)
• 1 bunch scallions, rinsed and chopped small
• 1 teaspoon fresh garlic, chopped fine
• 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, peeled and chopped fine
• 1 teaspoon sesame seed blend (black, white and toasted)
• 2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce (plus more to serve on the side if desired)
• Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
• Fresh cilantro, for garnish
Preparation:
Preheat a charcoal grill or grill pan to medium-high. Season the fish fillets evenly with 1 teaspoon of the spice blend. Lightly and evenly drizzle 1 teaspoon of the vegetable oil over the seasoned fillets. Carefully place the seasoned and oiled fillets on the preheated grill or grill pan. Let cook for 2 to 3 minutes before carefully flipping each fillet. Let cook for another 2 to 3 minutes. If cooking on a charcoal grill, move the fish fillets to a cooler spot on the grill so they can finish cooking. If using a grill pan, place in a 375-degree oven until the fillets are cooked through.
While the mahi is cooking, preheat a wok or large saute pan over medium-high heat. Add 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil to the preheated pan. Carefully crack each egg and add to the oiled saute pan. Cook and scramble the eggs by working them around the pan. When the eggs are cooked and scrambled, add the garlic, ginger, hot chilis if desired and diced mango. Continue to cook while stirring. Season the egg mixture with the remaining teaspoon of the spice blend. Make a spot in the middle of the pan to add the pre-cooked rice. Continue to cook ingredients while stirring. Add the sesame seeds and chopped scallions and continue to cook for another couple minutes. Carefully add the soy sauce and continue to stir. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Remove fried rice from the heat and let sit for 2 minutes before serving. Serve the grilled mahi with the mango fried rice. Garnish with sprigs of fresh cilantro if desired. Serve with extra soy sauce.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. No record of any possible deficiencies will be reported to the USCG, state agency or any other authority. Want to know more about this complimentary Vessel Safety Check program? Contact Peter Burns at (772) 486-2684 or burnspet@aol.com. St. Lucie River Power Squadron, one of more than 300 squadrons nationwide, also offers safe boating classes to the public. Check on their website, www.slrps.org, when classes will resume. Information about the parent organization is available at www.usps.org.

We may not see a huge difference in temperature or weather patterns between May and June but with a stormy summer predicted, this might be a good opportunity to capitalize on some great fishing before the major sweating and swatting begins.
What’s hot? Tarpon fever has broken out and anglers up and down the coast have been jumping or landing good numbers of tarpon. Fish are on the beaches, and more are showing up around the Sunshine Skyway and area waters of upper Tampa Bay. While many anglers are tossing live crabs or threadfins, others prefer cut menhaden (aka shad by locals) fished on the bottom. Purists will take to the water with a 10 or 12-weight fly rod, depending on the size of the fish targeted, and an assortment of flies like black and purple bunny flies or crab patterns. I mostly stick to artificial lures like the DOA Trolling Model Baitbuster. I usually file the hook barb down to a minimal size with the hook point a razor-sharp triangle. Another great producing lure for me has been the MirrOlure Catch 2000. I will change out the stock trebles for some stronger
hooks but again, filing the barbs of the hooks down to very small barbs or barbless hooks.
Heading toward the summer, I’m always aware of water temperature because as temperatures rise the dissolved oxygen levels in water decline. There are few fish other than tarpon and mangrove snapper that can handle summer water temperatures without moving to an area where temperatures are more suitable, and since tarpon can roll and gulp air, they are not dependent on oxygen entirely from the water.
Snook fishing has just about exploded. With every new and full moon linesiders are gathering to spawn in passes and several known spawning areas. This is the reason the season is closed this time of year. Snook will typically spawn throughout the summer and end around the new or full moon in September. These fish are very aggressive in water temperatures ranging from the low 70s to the middle 80s. Biologists say that release mortality for snook is very low and that they are a prime species for catch-and-release fishing. Handle them minimally, unhooking and releasing them
while still in the water if possible. If a photo is taken, support the fish by the belly horizontally, holding on to the lower lip, and release it back into the water as quickly as possible.
A species that we don’t often get to see numbers of for any length of time is the pompano. However, we have seen a terrific run of pompano for the past several months along the beaches and around many of the sandbars around Tampa Bay, Fort Desoto, and the Bulkhead near the mouth of the Manatee River. Longboat Pass, New Pass, Big Sarasota Pass and John’s Pass have all been productive with some of the most productive lures being the DOA TerrorEyz and the Doc’s Original Goofy Jig. Yellow, pink, or orange are the preferred colors for the Goofy Jig, and rootbeer/ gold glitter, gold, or golden bream colors are the outstanding producers in the TerrorEyz.
Trying to keep my cool this summer is one of my goals, but right now, the fishing is just too hot. Get out and go fishing! ‘Til then…I’ll catch ya later!

INSHORE FISHING REPORT - Snook are thick on the beaches once again, and we should only see more and more as we move into that summertime period. The new moon coming up should move plenty of fish around for sure. The passes are starting to really get filled with hungry fish and that trend should be solid this coming week.
Trout action has been surprisingly good this past week with fish being caught all over the area at different times of day. Inside the pass though, the nighttime trout fishing around dock lights and bridge lights have been epic.
Mangrove snapper have loaded up around the areas structures and will only get more concentrated and aggressive as we move further into summer. They love small pieces of shrimp inshore or even cut threadfin.
Redfish have been active around the bay area, but around the pass we have only seen one or two around the docks. Typically, we see them on live shrimp on the bottom during the day when the snook bite dies off.
Tarpon fishing has been picking up around the area. We see them at night around the fenders but then as the sun comes up they disappear into the gulf typically moving up the beaches.
Shark fishing action is really heating up along the beaches and from the jetty. We are seeing quite a few caught from the bridge and jetty areas on large chunks of dead bait and bigger tackle.
Mackerel and kingfish dominating the near shore waters right now. They are crashing the bait schools along the beaches heavily from the bridge all the way out to around 10-14 miles. We are getting a ton while trolling the spoons behind planners, but we are seeing some big kingfish on the flat lines too.
Lane snapper action is going well for us on our ten hour all day trips. We are catching them on live shrimp, cut squid and even cut threadfin too. They will take just about anything and around 3-4ot hooks work well.
Mangrove snapper action is possible on the 5 hours, but most likely once on that 10 hour all day a bit further from shore. We are getting them mostly on live shrimp or the small chunks of threadfin on the double snell rigs.
Hogfish action is still possible and we are catching a few nice ones here and there. However, we are not seeing the big numbers or concentrations that we did while we were seeing cooler temps. The hogfish love the lighter tackle and the live shrimp.
Red grouper fishing is going well for us deeper near shore, typically closer to that 100ft mark. We are getting them on big dead baits or the big live baits too. They are a bit picky but were seeing better and better cooperation!
OFFSHORE FISHING
REPORT - Amberjack season is upon us! We have the jacks open for the next whole month long, and were excited to put a
few stops into our trips to target them while they are open. They will also be open in September and October too! They love big live baits and we use the heaviest of tackle possible to wench them up from the bottom.
Red grouper fishing is going well out there in the offshore waters, and were hoping for that trend to continue. We are getting them on the big live pinfish or pigfish and also big dead baits too. Great time to get out to the red grouper right now!
Scamp grouper are possible when we are closer to that 120ft or more mark. Typically on the medium pinfish or cut threadfins we see some nice scamp. They love biting the mangrove snapper set ups typically as they can be a little leader shy.
Mangrove snapper have been steady and were seeing a large variety of sizes. To target the bigger mangroves use the small to medium pinfish and lighter 40lb test leader to get the big dogs to bite.
Pelagic action is HOT offshore right now with big numbers of tuna, a few wahoo and have spotted some sailfish. The kingfish are super prolific offshore too. It’s a great time to pull around some plugs and keep that flat line out soaking!

May 2024 Mosquito Lagoon New Smyrna Beach Backcountry
Spring has arrived to East Central Florida coastal and intracoastal waters, as water temps rise, bait fish and game fish migrate north after spending the winter further south along the Florida coast, glass minnows, mullet, sardines and pilchards for bait, Bluefish, Jack Crevalle, Pompano, Ladyfish, Spanish Mackerel are some of the inshore game fish which move north along the coast and in the inracoastal.
Spring is also shrimp run time on Indian River, so shrimp are one of the most useful bait, our local residential fish also become more active as the water warms, Black Drum, Snook,
Redfish, Whiting, and others are regular spring catches. Earlier in the morning can be good catching again as winter is over with warmer water.
Long time regular client Darin from Missouri caught and released a beautiful 28” Black Drum recently with me, at approx 10 lbs a great battle on light tackle. Pompano one of the schooling and migratory fish which travel up and down the eastern seaboard, following the water temperature with the seasons through the year, most travel along the ocean beaches. But some do come inside the inracoastal waterway, Sawyer from Alabama out with me recently with a quality big Pomp.
Spring here in East Central Florida means the return of coastal migratory fish species that have spent the winter further south on the eastern seaboard, waiting for rising water temperatures to signal their northward spring migration. Along the intracoastal waterway and the beach, Tarpon, Jack Crevalle, Bluefish, Ladyfish, Pompano, also bait fish Glass Minnows, Mullet, Pilchards and Sardines begin the
Treasure Coast Fishing: A Memorable Day of Angling, Adventure, and Fellowship
While Tania attended a women’s conference at church on Saturday, I embarked on a fishing adventure with fellow Salt Strong Insider Vern and my buddy Ron. We had planned to meet at the dock, with me arriving at 6:30 a.m. and them at 7:00 a.m. The morning was a picture of serenity, with a 10kt SW wind that would later shift to NW. As per the weather buoy, the seas were 1.7 ft at 12 seconds, promising a perfect day for our fishing adventure.
By 7:30 a.m., we had navigated out of the inlet and arrived at the boils. The scene was already bustling with several boats and five kayaks. With it being dead low tide, I strategically decided to start fishing at the west end of the boils, with our sights set on snook or redfish. However, as is often the case in this sport, the fish had their own plans, and the bite was disappointingly slow, reminding us of the unpredictable nature of our beloved sport.
Vern seemed to have the hot bait of the day, what he called the golden boy. It was a chartreuse-colored jig. I started using squidtrex,
and Ron had a slow-pitch jig on that was blue and silver. Once Vern caught a few fish with Golden Boy, I changed Ron to a Nomad 60g Chartreuse slow pitch, and I put on my favorite slow pitch jig, which is blue with a chartreuse line down the center.
The drift was near perfect, with a southwest drift. This kept us in the zone for much longer, but the bite was slow, even with the good drift. By 11:00 a.m., we had two black drums and one large lane snapper in the cooler. We had also caught bluefish, blue runners, and porkfish, but none of the targeted species. We all wanted more snapper in the boat, so I decided to fish the yellow buoy at the east end of the boils.
The bite at the buoy was hot. I believe it was the second bite Ron hooked himself into a nice fish. Unfortunately, we don’t know what it was, as after a few minutes of fighting and walking around the boat, it broke off. We believe it was a shark, but you never know what you have until you bring it up. Within 30 minutes, we put ten-lane snappers ranging from 12 to 14 inches in the cooler.
annual cycle, swimming north in spring.
Game fish striking bait on the surface make for great sight fishing, casting a lure, fly or bait right into the white water strikes can be an instant hookup, in spring, shrimp are also on the move here especially on a dropping tide in the morning and nighttime. Resident fish also become more active with warming water and more food, Seatrout, Snook, Redfish, Black Drum and others, recently Ella was out with me along with her family, catching many different species including a few nice Black Drum
Kristin from Alaska was out again with me throwing the fly, catching several species in the backcountry, including a few fun Ladyfish, spring can be good for flyfishing here with the schooling gamefish and surface activity
Just as we ran out of bait, we saw a guy drifting next to us catch a permit, so we decided to do a few drifts, hoping we would catch one. Unfortunately, today was not our day, but I was happy to see they are still in the area!
We ended up back at the dock at about 1:00 p.m. and had to wait a bit for a dock as the docks were full of people coming and going. When we got a spot on the dock, we unloaded the boat and cleaned the fish. Ron and Vern got excited watching all the big jacks and the 200—to 300 lb goliath grouper eating the carcasses as I threw them into the water.
Despite the slow bite, we all had a fantastic time, enjoying our fellowship and the shared passion for fishing. Days like this one, with their challenges and rewards, only serve to fuel our anticipation for the next adventure. Tania and I send our best wishes to all fellow anglers. May your fishing adventures be safe, blessed, and filled with tight lines and good times! Until next time, keep casting and chasing those dreams on the water.
Overall the fishing is getting better and will continue into my favorite months: May & June. Everglades Guide Service, Capt. Mark Ward, 239-450-9230.

Newly opened TowBoatUS Everglades City shaves on-water response time by 2 hours
EVERGLADES CITY, Fla., April 15, 2024
– Getting routine on-water assistance on the Chokoloskee Bay and in Everglades National Park’s 10,000 Island region just got better with the opening of TowBoatUS Everglades City. The new towboat port, which offers professional 24/7 on-water towing and assistance to recreational boaters, is expected to shorten response times significantly by eliminating the current 10- to15-mile response by water when dispatched from TowBoatUS Marco Island, the former closest TowBoatUS port north of the national park.
“By keeping a response boat ready 24/7 in Everglades City, we can respond to requests for towing and assistance must faster. It saves us up to two hours of water travel time to come down from Marco Island,” said Capt. Dillman. “Also, our Carolina Skiff response vessel only draws 6 inches. It allows us access to a lot of skinny water, areas we could not get to into before. I think the combination of a shorter response time with the increased coverage area will be a win for boaters and anglers in the 10,000 Islands.”
TowBoatUS Everglades City, Marco Island and Naples are owned by Capt. Dillman and his wife, Dominique. All of the company’s captains are U.S. Coast Guard-licensed. The towing ports are part of the largest 24/7 on-water towing service in North America with more than 300 locations and 600 red TowBoatUS response vessels.
Much like an auto club for recreational boat owners,
Boat Owners
Association of The United States (BoatUS) offers annual on-water Unlimited Towing Memberships for saltwater boaters and anglers for just $175 per year. Services include towing, soft ungrounding, battery jumps and fuel drop-offs. Members receive more than 25 BoatUS benefits including discounts at local fuel docks and transient slips at marinas. Also offered is a subscription to BoatUS Magazine, free DSC-VHF radio registration and more.
Separate from BoatUS on-water towing, the company offers boat salvage and environmental remediation services.
The fastest way to request assistance from TowBoatUS Everglades City, Marco Island and Naples is to download the free BoatUS App, which connects boaters to the closest local towing captain. Additionally, the company can be reached at 239-389-1177 or by phoning the BoatUS toll-free 24/7 Dispatch Center at 800-391-4869. For more, go to BoatUS.com/Towing or call 800-888-4869.

Here is a list of the many things to consider before, during and after a storm.
• Review your boat insurance policy carefully to know if you are required to take action in order to make a claim valid.
• If you keep your boat at a marina, find out what their storm policy is and take the proper steps.
• If you are going to move your boat, determine where ahead of time.
• Learn the storm surge history and elevation of your area.
• Learn safe routes inland and make plans of where you will evacuate to.
• Take inventory of the property on your boat and video if possible. Plan what will be removed from the boat and what will stay.
• Keep all legal documents such as registration, insurance policy, marina rental agreement, etc. in one secure and dry container away from the vessel.
A watch means hurricane conditions pose a possible threat to the watch area within 36-hours.
• Frequently monitor radio, TV, NOAA Weather Radio, and/or hurricane hotline telephone numbers for official bulletins of the storm’s progress.
• Ensure access to emergency equipment such as first aid kit, flashlights, and/or battery-powered radios.
• Move boats on trailers close to a building. Weigh them down. Lash securely to the trailer and use tie-downs to anchor the trailer.
• Anchored boats should be tied high, using a half hitch knot (loop knots slip). Anchor rigging should consist of new or good line and chain.
• Boats docked at marinas should have extra lines attached. Line lengths should be sufficient to accommodate excessive high water.
• Once your boat is secured, leave it and don’t return until the storm has passed.
• Fuel your car.
• Stock up on canned provisions
• Check supplies of special medicines and drugs.
• Secure lawn furniture and other loose material outdoors.
• Tape, board, or shutter windows to prevent shattering.
• Wedge sliding glass doors to prevent them from lifting from their tracks.
A warning means sustained winds of 74 mph or higher are expected in the warning area within 24-hours or less.
• Closely monitor radio, TV, NOAA Weather Radio, and/or hurricane hotline telephone numbers for official bulletins.
• Follow instructions issued by local officials and LEAVE IMMEDIATELY IF ORDERED TO DO SO.
• Plan to evacuate if you live on the coastline, an offshore island, or live near a river or in a flood plain.
If staying home in a sturdy structure on high ground:
• Board up garage and porch doors.
• Move valuables to upper floors.
• Bring pets in.
• Fill containers with several days supply of drinking water. Approximately one gallon per person, per day.
• Turn up refrigerator to maximum cold and don’t open unless necessary.
• Only use your phone for emergencies.
• Stay indoors on the downwind side of the house away from windows.
• Beware of the eye of the hurricane.
• Bring in small hand tools to aid you should your home be damaged during the storm.
If you are evacuating:
• Leave early in daylight if possible.
• Shut off water and electricity at main stations.
• Take small valuables and documents but travel light.
• Persons needing special foods or medicines should take them with them.
• Take sufficient money in small bills to defray certain expenses you may incur.
• Lock up house.
• Notify family members or friends outside of the warned area of your evacuation plans.
• Drive carefully to designated shelter or other evacuation location by following recommended evacuation routes.
• Stay in your protected area until the storm has passed and local officials announce it is safe to travel.
• Drive carefully – watch for dangling electrical wires, undermined roads, and flooded low spots.
• Report broken or damaged water, sewer, and electrical lines.
• Use caution when re-entering your home.
• If your home has structural damage, do not enter until it is checked by building officials.
• Check for gas leaks.
• Check food and water for spoilage.
Early predictions are calling for a very active 2024 hurricane season. Indications point to an aboveaverage number of storms with direct impacts to the U.S. An official outlook by NOAA is expected to be released at the end of May.
Weather can be unpredictable, so better to prepare in advance than to scramble at the last minute. Sea Tow’s Market Development Director, Al Tate, heeds a strong warning, “Boaters should try to be as prepared as possible, especially when a major storm is approaching. It’s hard to predict how and where impacts of an event will be felt, but it’s better to be safe and ready. Don’t wait, make your plan now.”
Ensure You’re Insured. A boat that is damaged by a storm can cost far more to fix than a marine insurance policy costs annually. Review your boat policy’s requirements and be sure to comply with them. Boat owners whose insurance requires them to relocate their vessels out of a hurricane zone should do so by the date specified in their policy.
Plan in Place. Most insurance providers require a formal written storm plan detailing where and how your boat will be secured during a major event. Designate a responsible person to execute the plan if you are out of town when a threat arises.
No Loose Cannons. Check with your marina, storage facility or the owner of the private dock where your boat is moored, to be sure the vessel can remain there during a storm. If it can stay, know the procedure for securing not only your boat, but those docked around it, as well. Any boat that breaks loose in a storm could potentially damage your boat.
Smooth Move. If you must move your boat from its current slip in the event of a storm, decide where you are going to have it hauled before the season even begins. Check with your local Sea Tow operator to see what pre-storm haul-out services are offered in your area.
Shoot Your Boat. Make an inventory, preferably by video, of all valuable fixed items such as marine electronics that you cannot remove from your boat. Store all the boat’s documents, including your marine insurance policy, in a secure place away from the vessel.
Lastly, keep an eye to the sky and closely monitor local and national weather services, including NOAA Weather Radio and the National Weather Service’s National Hurricane Center (www.nhc.noaa.gov.)
