2024 Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic Slated for June 19-23 at Sandestin®

Miramar Beach, Florida –

The 22nd Annual Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic (ECBC), one of the top big-game fishing contests in the world, gets underway June 19 and continues through June 23 at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort®. Sandestin is the most visited Northwest Florida resort destination for vacationers, group and business travelers, families and adventurers. The ECBC is one of the highlights of the resort’s summer season.

Teams will be competing for more than two million dollars in cash and awards, with blue marlin as the top prize. To qualify for the weigh-in, blue marlin must be at least 110 inches long, measured from the tip of the fish’s lower jaw to the fork of the tail. The average winning blue marlin typically weighs 652 pounds or heavier.

In addition to the blue marlin weight category, smaller blues, white marlin, sailfish and spearfish that are successfully caught and released earn points in the competitive release division, verified by video footage. Yellowfin and bigeye tuna, wahoo and dolphin are scored one point per pound at the scales.

The ECBC attracts multimillion-dollar sport-fishing yachts from across the Southeastern United States and Gulf Coast region. Fishing begins after Thursday’s noon start from the Destin Pass and concludes Saturday afternoon. Eligible fish are weighed Friday and Saturday evenings at the Baytowne Marina. Viewing is free and open to the public. Florida Sweet Pepper Blue Crab Cakes

Ingredients

• 1 pound Florida jumbo lump blue crab

• 1 cup Florida assorted color sweet bell peppers, diced small

• 2 Florida eggs

• 3 tablespoons mayonnaise

• 1 lemon, juiced

• 2-3 dashes Worcestershire sauce

• 1 tablespoon stone ground mustard or spicy brown mustard

• 1 teaspoon Florida seafood seasoning blend

• 2 tablespoons fresh herbs (parsley), chopped fine

• 1/2 cup panko, plus more if needed

• 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, plus more for cooking

Preparation:

Add the blue crab to a medium mixing bowl.

Carefully inspect and pick through the blue crab to remove any shells.

Add the peppers, eggs, mayonnaise, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, herbs and panko breadcrumbs. Lightly fold the ingredients to combine, trying not to break up the lumps of crab.

Place the mixed blue crab cakes covered in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to set.

Preheat a large saute pan over medium heat.

Form the crab cake mixture into even patties.

The crab cakes can be made into large or small cakes.

Add the vegetable oil to the preheated pan. Carefully add a few crab cakes to the pan.

Cook each crab cake on each side for 2 to 3 minutes until they are browned and cooked throughout.

Repeat this process until all the cakes are cooked.

Keep cooked crab cakes warm in a 200-degree oven until served. Garnish with fresh parsley.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Lets Go Tarpon Fishing

Catching a tarpon on fly in Homosassa, Florida, is one of those bucket list trips that many traveling anglers look forward to year after year. With its rich history in the world of fly-fishing (especially tarpon fly fishing) Homosassa has always been one of those mythical destinations for anglers seeking the thrill of targeting a fish of a lifetime. But it’s not just the fish that brings anglers from all over the world to these flats year after year. It’s the combination of crystal clear water, pristine shallow flats, and large hungry fish that make this destination the special place that it is today.

The Homosassa River and surrounding spring fed rivers provide ideal habitats for Nature Coast tarpon, offering a mix of shallow flats, channels, and mangrovelined shorelines where these fish can be found. The tradition of tarpon fishing in Homosassa dates back many decades, with the area becoming known for its world-class tarpon fishing records back in the 1970’s. Those early anglers that visited Homosassa spoke of a fishery like none other on the planet, a place where tarpon were undiscovered, unmolested, and large.

Over the years, Homosassa has lost some of its prestige as storms and other

man made occurrences have affected the migrating numbers of tarpon. Still to this day Homosassa has regained its reputation as a top destination for fly fishermen looking to target tarpon. The challenge of hooking and landing a large tarpon on fly tackle is in the DNA of anyone that picks up a fly rod, and the waters of Homosassa provide the perfect setting for this pursuit.

Southwest Coast West Central Florida

Here are some tips for catching Giant Homosassa tarpon:

1. Location: Targeting deep holes known for tarpon activity during the early morning hours is the best bet. As the sunrises the fish begin to feed and it’s at these times where the most strikes occur. During the afternoon look for areas with calm waters, such as shallow flats, river mouths, or near oyster bars where tarpon tend to feed.

Use a sturdy fly rod (typically 10-12 weight) with a matching reel that can handle the strength and size of a tarpon. Make sure to use a 60-100lb fluorocarbon leaders and class tippets ranging from 12-20lb

to withstand the fish’s powerful runs. Try using lighter tippets for finicky tarpon or when there are lots of sharks around.

3. Flies: Select appropriate fly patterns that mimic the baitfish or crustaceans that tarpon feed on. Popular flies for tarpon include deceivers, tarpon bunnies, and EP flies in colors like orange, black, and chartreuse.

4. Presentation: When casting, try to place your fly close to the tarpon without spooking them. Make accurate casts and allow the fly to sink before starting your retrieve. Tarpon are known to be selective, so be patient and observe their behavior to adjust your presentation.

5. Fight: Once a tarpon takes your fly, be prepared for an exciting battle. Tarpon are known for their acrobatics and powerful runs, so be ready to let them run and use the drag on your reel to tire them out gradually.

There is nothing better than spending some quality time fishing with the kids or grandkids. June is just the right time of the year to get the family hooked (no pun intended)on fishing.

Summer weather brings many species closer to the shore and makes it a perfect time to fish many of the fishing piers along Tampa Bay on the gulf shoreline. One often overlooked right here in our own backyard is Ballast Point Park pier and Picnic Island Park pier, which is a public pier free to everyone Ballast Point Pier one of the few that has its own artificial reef built on each side of it.It’s like having your own private feeding station attracting many different species, including grouper.

Fishing piers offer a measure of safety for parents where the whole family can fish and enjoy our great outdoors, which is just one of the many reasons for living in Florida. Seasons change, and so does the species of fish that feed there. There are always the regulars like catfish, trout, flounder, redfish, snook and sheepshead that call the pier their home.

Sheepshead are a great fighting fish for their size and make a great table fare. They just take a little long to clean due to their thick skin and scales. Sheepshead are known for their bait stealing abilities

butare favorites of kids to catch.

Shrimp and fiddler crabs are their favorite baits, but small pieces of cut shrimp work great using a #1 or #2 hook with a small sinker that has just enough weight to keep the shrimp close to the barnacles. Live fiddler crabs is another bait sheepshead find irresistible, and they can be purchased at most bait shops or better yet, get the kids to catch then on low tide along the mangrove shoreline and turn the trip into an adventure. I find the kids enjoy catching them as much as they do fishing with them and a sense of pride for catching their own bait.

Fishing with fiddler crabs is easy. Just use a small jig head and run a hook through the outside tip of the shell. The jig acts as the weight, but make sure you buy the jigs with the smaller hook size. Some are sold for trout fishing and the hook will be far too large to work on sheepshead.

Summer weather brings larger trout, mackerel, cobia, redfish and some snook looking to feed on the schools of live bait that like to call the piers their summer home. I find it best to use a cork and suspend the bait just off the bottom and let the current take the bait away from the pier rather than casting. This way you can cover a larger area until you find where the fish are stationed. Piers with artificial reefsoffer the

advantage of attracting groupers, mangrove snapper and flounder and tend to hold more fish year-round.

Spanish mackerel are probably the most fun for kids to catch since they seem to hook themselves and take off like a rocket when hooked its an experience a kid will never forget and one of the species that move in close to the docks to feed on the schools of sardines around the pilings. Smoked Spanish mackerel makes one of the best fish spread around served on a saltine cracker with a shot of Tabascosauce make a super summertime snack.

Locked Doors and Lucky Catches: A Mangrove Fishing Tale

I was free Friday afternoon, so I contacted fellow insiders Tim Cox and Walt Laurel to see if they wanted to meet me at the dock after my doctor’s appointment. We all looked forward to fishing together and agreed to meet by 11:30 a.m.

Given the time constraints of our quick three-hour trip, I informed the guys that we would be using artificial bait only. I also mentioned that I wasn’t bringing any ice to bring fish home. When asked about this, I revealed our strategy was targeting over slots today, a decision that sparked curiosity and anticipation.

before. I had a massive bite on my fourth cast, but unfortunately, my main line snapped within seconds. I believe my line got a nick in it while fishing the oyster beds. I must be more conscious about checking my line after fishing oyster beds.

With little luck, we kept working our way around the bend, so we returned to the main channel. The smart fishing spot showed Spoil Island 15 as a hot bite for Redfish, Snook, and Trout, so we started at the island’s south side. I really liked the look of this area.

boat, I saw it was a huge trout. It was exciting bringing this big fish onboard. I could barely get my hands around its belly for the picture, and it measured in at 24 inches.

While I was fighting my fish, Tim lost a smaller trout near the boat. Not long after that Walt had his paddle tail nailed right at the boat. He was bringing it in quickly and was at the top of the water when it was hit. It was an amazing blow-up, and after five minutes of fighting, we got the fish on the boat and realized it was a decent-sized Jack.

As I pulled up at the dock around 11:15 a.m., a sudden gust of wind slammed my car door shut, locking it. Luckily, a passerby offered to fetch the necessary tools to unlock my car. Walt and Tim arrived before the gentleman returned, and we shared a few laughs, albeit with a tinge of anxiety, as I was inadvertently delaying our boat trip.

The gentleman from the city returned and unlocked my car so I could unpack my gear. By the time we loaded the boat, it was about 11:45 a.m. It was the start of the incoming tide, so I wanted to go to the oyster bar near Snapper Cut to start.

I started throwing the Prawn Jr. on a 1/8oz Hoss Weedless jig head. Walt and Tim were throwing different paddle tails; however, I am not 100% sure what they were tossing. It didn’t take long for us to start getting bites. My first hit was on my second cast, and it cut my bait off at the hook. I believe it was a small cuda, but I didn’t see it, so I cannot say for sure. We didn’t stay here long as the puffer fish were terrible, and they kept tearing up all our baits.

first time fishing in this area, and it looked really fishy. As we worked our way east, I noticed several cuts that went into the middle of the mangrove island. With the incoming tide, the current was flowing in the wrong direction for how we were positioned to fish, so when we got to the east side, I went into the cut.

Once we were back in the middle of the mangrove island, we saw tons of bait and an egret at the mouth of the first entryway. While approaching the bird, I saw a splash right behind the bird and cast right near the splash. I did one twitch, and something slammed my bait. When I first started fighting the fish, it broke the top of the water, and with its size, I thought I had a decent snook on; however, as it got closer, I could tell it wasn’t a snook. With the size and the coloring, I shifted my thoughts to a redfish. Still, once I got to the

It turns out that just as we found the fish, it was time to head back to the dock. We fished our way out of the mangrove island and to the channel, hoping to put Tim on a fish. Unfortunately, it was not his day, and I felt bad as the captain as I would prefer my guests to catch fish over myself.

We made it back to the dock shortly after 3:00 pm, which is what time I needed to get back. I needed to be home when Tania got home from work so we could do our workout together. Since we had no fish to clean I was able to get everything offloaded from the boat and loaded into my car quick enough that I was able to get home just as Tania arrived.

Even though we didn’t all catch fish, and it was a short trip, I had a great time fellowshipping with Walt and Tim. I learned from both of them, and I hope I was able to teach them a thing or two. I cannot forget to mention the beautiful weather and the crystalclear water, which made for a wonderful day on the boat, with or without fish being caught!
