Valhalla Boatworks is kicking off their Dealer Meeting & Sea Trial Event with the announcement of a new model - the Valhalla V-55 Sport! “The V-55 Sport represents our ability to diversify within a model to meet the needs of more owners,” says Viking President and CEO Pat Healey. “It takes the proven performance of our 55 hull and merges it with an exciting, contemporary design that the cruising crowd will love.”

Powered by four Mercury 600-hp outboards, the V-55 SP runs on the same Michael Peters Yacht Design Stepped-V Ventilated Tunnel (SVVT) running surface like the rest of the Valhalla lineup, delivering a fast, stable and efficient ride.

The Valhalla 55 Sport presents a stunning profile. Her swept-back, four-sided fiberglass enclosure features tinted windows and a hardtop (with sunroof) that extends aft to cover the summer kitchen. A telescoping powered shade – hidden in the hardtop – delivers sun protection and comfort in the cockpit. Support arches gracefully project outboard to the coamings. The V-55 Sport holds 1,100 gallons of fuel for extensive range and is engineered for a Seakeeper for increased comfort. The plan is to have hull No. 1 completed for the winter boat show season.

Boarding platforms outboard of the engines lead to a pair of glass doors that provide cockpit access. Designed for maximum relaxation and outdoor entertaining, the cockpit features a large dining area with two bench seats and a table. An L-shaped summer kitchen is just forward and to starboard. The yacht features powered fold-down

balconies on each side with integrated boarding ladders. “The balconies consist of the entire aft sections of the hull sides, completely opening up the cockpit,” says Viking Design Manager David Wilson. “Each platform is 25 square feet, giving you more deck space and easy water access.”

A low-profile bow rail enhances safety and adds style. An asymmetrical side-deck design allows for increased interior volume. A raised starboard side deck (accessed via three steps) frees up space in the cabin while still providing access forward to tend to dock lines. The port side walkway is flush with the deck and leads to the bow, where you’ll find a three-person sunpad and a wraparound lounge with table.

Accessed through a port-side bulkhead door, the command deck is designed to bring the outdoors inside with its powered aft bulkhead window and sunroof. There are also port and starboard powered doors that slide aft. They provide full-beam access from the three-person forward control station while also ushering in refreshing breezes for those relaxing in the aft seating area.

Port-side companionway stairs lead to the featurepacked galley to starboard and comfortable dinette to port (with L-shaped seating that’s convertible to a berth). Accommodations include two private staterooms with walkaround queen beds. The forward master is appointed with an ensuite head and separate shower. A day head, also with separate shower, is just forward of the amidship guest stateroom. An abundance of natural light enters through cabin and hull-side windows.

2 tablespoons parmesan cheese, grated

1 teaspoon olive oil

Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Preheat a medium sized oven safe sauté pan over medium high heat. On a clean cutting board, make several slices into the thickest part of the fish all the way to the bone. Use most of the seasoning blend to season the outside of the fish making sure to get the spice mixture into the fresh cuts. Add the butter to the preheated sauté pan, and carefully place the fish top side down. Cook the fish for two to 3 minutes until a light crispy crust is formed. Carefully flip the fish over and put the whole pan into the preheated oven. Let the fish cook for another 8 to 12 minutes or until it is just cooked throughout. Remove the pan from the oven and let it rest.

In a medium sized bowl, add arugula, half the lemon juice, olive oil and parmesan cheese. Stir ingredients to coat and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Carefully transfer the cooked flounder to a large plate. Add the completed arugula salad to the plate with the fish on it. Squeeze the remaining lemon juice over the fish and sprinkle any remaining seasoning blend over the entire dish.

Sarasota, FL Fishing Forecast for June 2024

Tarpon should be plentiful in the coastal gulf this month as big schools of fish migrate along our beaches. Also look for cobia, tripletail and false albacore (little tunny) in the coastal gulf. Catch and release snook fishing should also be good in and around passes and in the surf. Fishing should also be good on deep grass flats for a variety of species.

Tarpon fishing should be strong this month as schools of fish increase in size and numbers. They will head off shore to spawn close to new and full moons. Set up in travel lanes along the beach at first light in the morning and cast live crabs, baitfish, DOA Baitbusters and Swimming Mullet to them. I travel well offshore along the beach in the morning to avoid disturbing schools of tarpon that may be traveling close to the beach. Once you’ve reached the area you intend to fish, ease into the beach with an electric trolling motor and set up in your spot. You can anchor or drift, depending on conditions. Give other anglers several hundred yards of space. Since fish may be moving both north and south, setting up too close to another angler may negatively affect their fishing. Tarpon fishing is very dependent on conditions and there are a lot of variables that need to come together to be successful.

Use tackle heavy enough to land them as quickly as possible. When fly fishing, I use 12-weight rods and large arbor reels capable of holding 300-yards or more of backing. I use a variety of baitfish, shrimp or crab fly patterns fished on floating fly lines. The shallower the water, the easier it is to get your fly in front of a fish when fly fishing. Stake out or anchor in travel lanes to get shots at them.

When spin fishing, I usually drift a couple of live baits under a float while we wait for tarpon schools to pass by. Blind casting

with DOA Baitbusters or Swimming Mullet, if you’re in the right spot, can also be productive when fish are moving past you but not showing well on the surface. The CAL 4” Shad Tail/Swimbait with a heavy weedless hook is also be a good tarpon bait, especially when sight fishing.

You should find snook in the surf, in passes and around docks and bridges in the ICW near passes. You can walk the beach and sight fish them in the surf with fly or spinning tackle. Small baitfish fly patterns, CAL jigs with shad tails and jerk worms or DOA shrimp should all work well. The same lures and flies that work in the surf will also work well at night. Snook will congregate in passes around the new and full moons to spawn. They will usually be in deep channels in these areas. Bouncing a DOA TerrorEyz or Baitbuster in bridge channels or passes can be an effective technique in these areas.

Fishing for reds should also be good in June. Look for them over shallow grass along mangrove shorelines or around oyster bars when the tide is high. You’ll find them in potholes or edges of flats when the tide is low. Top water plugs will work well, especially early in the day. I like to cover water with CAL jigs and shad tails or jerk worms to find them. Fly anglers should score with baitfish fly patterns like my Grassett Flats Minnow.

You may find Spanish mackerel, bluefish or pompano in passes or on deep grass flats this month. I like to drift deep grass flats and cast ahead of my drift with CAL jigs and shad tails or jerk worms or DOA Deadly Combos. Fly anglers should score by drifting and casting ahead of the drift with Ultra Hair Clouser flies tied on long shank hooks on an intermediate sink tip fly line. You’ll need to add a few inches of heavy (40 or 50-pound) fluorocarbon when toothy fish are in the mix.

In addition to tarpon look for

Spanish mackerel, false albacore, cobia and tripletail in the coastal gulf this month. Although none of them may be thick, I’ve encountered all of them before in June. Keep your eyes open for bird activity or “breaking” fish to find albies and mackerel. Cobia and tripletail may be found around crab trap floats; however I’ve seen cobia swimming with tarpon schools before. Medium spinning tackle and a DOA Shrimp or CAL jig will get the job done for all of them, although your tarpon tackle would also work well for a big cobia. An 8 or 9-weight fly rod with a floating or clear sink tip fly line is adequate to catch everything except a big cobia, in which case your 12-weight tarpon fly tackle will work well.

There are lots of options in inshore waters or the coastal gulf this month. If pulling on a 100-pound tarpon isn’t for you, fishing pressure is usually light inshore this month so snook, reds, trout and more should also be good options. Our natural resources are under constant pressure from red tides fueled by industrial, agricultural and residential runoff, toxic spills and discharges, freezes, increasing fishing pressure and habitat loss and degradation, please limit your kill, don’t kill your limit!

Kids are now out of school. People are starting to get ready for their summer vacations. Anglers had great success due to the warm weather and great tides we had.

Tarpon fishing picked up this week, water still dirty in some areas, but the fish were very active striking live baits. Back cuts and cows were holding juvenile tarpon. These fish were following glass minnow pods. Rapala x raps provoked strikes but anglers just couldn’t hold tight as the silver king shook the lures. As we get into mid June, the tarpon bite should really fire up, plenty of big fish on the beaches and inside local inlets and passes.

Snook fishing is ramping up local inlets and passes are holding fish. Issue that we’re having in Palm Beach County is the dredging creating dirty water and spooking fish at times. Back waters and canals are holding plenty of snook for anglers to target. Live bait and Rapala x raps in ghost color provoke strikes.

Targeting snook and tarpon anglers are having

great success, catching jacks, barracuda, ladyfish, snapper, sharks and many other species. As bait schools continue pushing into the intercoastal this will drive more schooling fish to our areas, keeping consistent rod, bending action.

School of fish kids camp report

Summer has arrived! This past week I shift gears as I run school of fish kids fishing camp.

School of fish is designed to teach youth anglers the fundamentals of fishing, knot tying, species identification, reading the waters, lure building and many other activities geared towards fishing.

We set out the past four days on a freshwater lake targeting largemouth bass. Utilizing only artificial lures like DOA and monsterbass, anglers learn how to present baits in different techniques.

Jigging and using jerk baits, has been the top techniques by these anglers.

Summer Time!

Sorry for the delay in reports but we have been fishing a whole lot. Sailfish season is pretty much over although we do catch sailfish year-round in Miami, but we are now switching gears and targeting mahis in the Gulfstream. Last years mahi season was a bust, but so far this year it has been very good. We have caught our limit of mahis on every trip this year. The limit is 10 per person with a 20inch minimum. Last year we were plagued by a lot of sub legal mahis but that doesn’t seem to be the case this year. Along with the mahis and especially if we find something decent floating in the water we can also target wahoo. This is one of the best family trips you can take and is especially rewarding for young anglers. There is nothing like the sight of seeing a school of mahis swimming next to the boat. It’s exciting for both the seasoned anglers as well as the inexperienced anglers.

We did do a couple of trips across to the Bahamas targeting yellowfin tunas. Those trips were a huge success. On our first trip we found

the tunas and were steadily catching yellowfins and big blackfins. The yellowfins were up to 80 pounds. While we were tuna fishing, we hooked a very big tuna. I was on the rod and after 30 minutes we all knew that this was going to be a very big yellowfin, probably well over 125 pounds. An hour into the fight – stand up in a harness, we started seeing the big tuna below doing its circles under the boat. Inch by inch we got the fish closer and put a couple of gaffs in it. Much to everyone’s surprise it turned out to be a 176-pound big eye tuna. Big eyes are not very common in the Bahamas and catching one this big was truly a fish of a lifetime. We had another trip to the Bahamas for tuna a couple of weeks later and crushed the yellowfins and blackfins again. We also did very well with huge yellowtail snappers. The final day we decided to fish for marlin, and we did get a nice blue u on the squid chain and pulled on her for a few but were not able to get her to switch over to one of the trolled baits. tournament and wouldn’t you know it, but we hooked another huge tuna. This was either another bigeye tuna or a very large yellowfin. After an hour we had her pinwheeling under the boat, but she wore through the leader. A true heartbreaker but we did manage to catch enough big tunas to earn us 3rd place in the tourney.

We also did well with big blackfin tunas in Miami this year. That season is slowly coming to an end as I mentioned earlier, we are now concentrating on mahis in the Gulfstream. As well as mahis, we are also targeting daytime swordfish (we did catch a big swordfish a month or so ago – It weighed in at 398 pound). We will also hopefully be heading back to the Bahamas for some more fishing.
