Are Boaters Doing Better When It Comes to Boating Safety?
SPRINGFIELD, Va., June 13, 2024 – The recently released U.S. Coast Guard 2023 Recreational Boating Statistics shows some good news on the boating safety front, with fatalities falling by 11.3% to 564 from 636 in 2022, and overall incidents decreasing by 4.9% from 4,040 to 3,844. Nonfatal injuries also dropped by 4.3% from 2,222 in 2022 to 2,126 in 2023.
Over the long haul, the Coast Guard report also noted that when the Safe Boating Act was first passed in 1971, the fatality rate was 20.6 deaths per 100,000 registered vessels. The latest stats show that number has been reduced to 4.9 per 100,000.
The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water, the nonprofit sister organization of Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS), says that latest data is a testament to the collective efforts of boating safety advocates, educators and law enforcement agencies across the country. However, boaters shouldn’t rest on their laurels.

“We can’t seem to overcome some perennial issues,” said BoatUS Foundation director of boating safety Ted Sensenbrenner. “Alcohol continues to be a leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents. Of the 75% deaths attributed to drowning, 87% were not wearing life jackets. Additionally, the top five primary contributing factors to accidents continue to be inattention, improper lookout, inexperience, excessive speed and machinery failure.”
However, says Sensenbrenner, boaters can increase safety efforts in these areas. “Can you save the alcohol for after boating, or at the minimum, ensure the skipper avoids alcohol? Keep in mind inebriated passengers are still a risk to themselves. Do you offer your guests comfortable life jackets that they will wear? If not going to be worn, are life jackets readily available and do you have one for everyone aboard? Are you keeping distractions at the helm to a minimum and using everyone’s eyes aboard your boat as a lookout?”
One bright spot has been in boating safety education.
“Coast Guard stats continue to confirm the value of boating safety instruction, as they indicate the majority of deaths occur on vessels operated by individuals who had not received boating safety instruction,” said Sensenbrenner. The Foundation plays a significant boating safety role by offering a free online boating safety course that meets minimum boating safety education requirements in 36 states that more than 2.5 million students have taken, as well as on-water training that boosts confidence behind the helm.
“BoatUS Foundation’s goal is to ensure every boater has the knowledge and resources to enjoy America’s waterways safely and responsibly, and to help get these numbers even lower next year,” added Sensenbrenner.

Shrimp and Sweet Pepper Skewers
Ingredients
1 pound large Florida shrimp, peeled and deveined with tail on
2 large Florida bell peppers (your favorite color), cut into 1-inch squares
2 large onions cut into 1-inch squares
8 bamboo skewers (soaked in water for 1 hour) or metal skewers
Cooking oil spray for grilling
Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
Skewer Marinade and Sauce
1/2 cup olive oil
2 tablespoons fresh garlic, minced
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon chili powder
2 tablespoons lime juice
1/4 cup fresh cilantro
Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
Preparation:
Shrimp and Sweet Pepper Skewers
Make skewers by alternating the shrimp, peppers, and onions. Make sure to put the same amount of shrimp, peppers, and onions on each of the skewers. Lightly season the completed skewers with salt and pepper. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Lightly spray the skewers with the cooking oil spray. Carefully add the shrimp skewers to the grill and cook until the shrimp are just done.
Skewer Marinade and Sauce
Combine olive oil, garlic, cumin, chili powder, cilantro and lime juice in a blender and puree until smooth. Use half of the marinade on the raw skewers. Taste marinade and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Use the reserved, unused half of the marinade as a sauce.

The Heat Is On- Finding Comfort Zones
The first days of summer are right around the corner, yet air temperatures are in the mid-to-upper 90s with a “feels like” temperature of about 105 degrees. Imagine what the fish must be feeling. Understanding the comfort zones of fish and what they need to survive and thrive will help you catch more fish. Finding the right habitat for the summer conditions ahead for your targeted species will keep you on fish that will eat.
Tampa Bay’s water temperatures have fluctuated between 82 and 89 degrees. Most clients I fish with during the year want to target snook, trout, and redfish, but at certain times of the year flounder, mangrove snapper, cobia, permit, and tarpon might be targets we pursue. During the dog days of summer, the fish that can tolerate the highest temperatures are tarpon, permit, and mangrove snapper. Cobia might be a target, primarily in the spring. Still, like other species, if we can find the right habitat and comfort zone in our estuary, we might also find cobia or numerous
other species.
So, how do we target the remaining species that prefer lower temperatures? The things I concentrate on most when looking for cooler water temperatures are 1.) time of day-- The early hours of the day just before sunrise are usually some of the coolest, up until mid-morning on sunny days. Early evenings on sunny days begin cooling off after about 6 p.m. and into the night. 2.) Water clarity-- Water with turbidity will absorb more heat from the sun than clear water. 3.) Cloud cover—Cloudy days can keep temperatures low 4.)
Rain— Rain falls from thousands of feet in the sky where air temperatures can be close to freezing, making a chilling effect when rain mixes with seawater 5.) Shade— Boat docks and shorelines with overhanging mangroves are some of redfish’s favorite hangouts. Fishing under bridges that provide shade, structure, bait, and more can be productive. Northern and eastern shorelines get exposure to sun later in the day making them cooler than fishing southern and western exposed shores in the early hours of the day. 6.) Tide

Time spent now while they are young could prove to be one of the best things we can do for our kids. I am speaking from experience as a young kid growing up in Ybor City with nothing to do. If it wasn’t for my uncle who got me hooked on fishing, I may not be the person I am today so please take a little time now for their future.

Add a small tackle box, some hooks, sinkers, lures, and swivels, all which can be purchased for under $50.00. For less than the cost of one football game, a family of 4 can get started for under $200.00.
The next question is where do we go from here? That is easy, because the Tampa Bay area has plenty of fishing piers both inside Tampa Bay and on the Gulf of Mexico. We are also blessed with miles of shoreline.
Pier fishing is simple. Just pick an open spot, especially next to the guy catching fish (just kidding) and ask questions at the bait house. This could be your best source of information on what is biting and how to rig them. Look for the anglers with wagons or small shopping carts converted to carry rods and tackle. These guys are what I call pier pros and they know their stuff. Fishermen are good-natured and most are always willing to extend a helping hand to get someone else started. Different baits are used for different fish. Trout, mackerel, and redfish prefer greenback sardines, and they can be caught

direction— Gulf waters being deeper than the bays are usually cooler than bay water temperatures, so incoming tides fished in the afternoons might be cooler, especially around passes 7.)
Bottom color and make-up-- Dark mud flats absorb heat, but white sandy bottoms reflect it, making white sandy potholes good holding spots for fish. 8.) Water depth—Shallow water temperatures change more quickly than deep water. It’s best to work the shallows at sunrise when they are cool, otherwise, deeper water will remain cooler during most of the day.
While many different species will be found here in the summer, locating that comfort zone for each species is the key to catching more of the fish you are targeting. Tarpon and mangrove snapper are prime targets this month and next and can handle anything that the summer sun gives us. For the rest, find their comfort zones.

using a sabiki rig, BallyHoop net or throwing a bait net. If catching your bait is not in the game plan live medium shrimp will work fine just a little more hassle keeping the pinfish off or maybe not if they kids are having fun.
Cobia, grouper, and tarpon mostly caught from the piers prefer pinfish, and they can be purchased or caught using a small gold hook tipped with shrimp. Sheepshead love fiddler crabs. When my kids were young this was a favorite of ours to catch. Fiddler crabs are those small quick running little crabs you see along the shoreline on low tide. My kids really enjoyed chasing them down to catch them. They are fast and run into holes they have burrowed in the sand. To catch one, first get a small, slender stick about six or eight inches long. Stand very still close to the holes and wait until a fiddler starts to poke his head. Place the stick behind the hole about three inches and place the other hand in front of the hole so when the fiddler is forced out, he has nowhere to go except into your hand. It’s a great way to start the day.
Surface feeding fish like cobia, mackerel and tarpon can be caught by free lining your bait with the current or if fishing from the shore I recommend using a float to keep the bait from sinking to the bottom.
For bottom feeders such as redfish, flounder, mangrove snapper and pompano attach a weight egg sinker just heavy enough to keep the bait on the bottom, look for structure, old dock pilings, rocky bottom and oyster beds all make for a great place to start. Sheepshead make their home around the pilings, and a simple rig consisting of a #1 J hook with 24 inches of 20-pound test mono leader and a 1-ounce sinker depending on current flow will surely help you land one. Sheepshead are known as one of the best bait stealers around, but when hooked they will give any youngster a battle they will soon not forget.
Another source for action is along the miles
of shoreline and beaches. Wade fishing can be both fun and refreshing during the summer months. Add a picnic lunch and you are ready for action.
Shore bound anglers can catch as many if not more than pier fisherman, you have miles of shoreline to walk and try your luck, some examples Courtney Campbell Parkway, Cypress Creek Park (great wading area for redfish), south end of Picnic Island, Gandy Bridge east side around the radio towers all perfect for shore anglers and waders.
Weedon Island has a productive fishing pier, kayak ramps, a museum with lot of history bout the island and is a great place to spend some time fishing and bonding.

When looking for the rod and reel combo, a medium weight outfit is perfect. Okuma makes a great priced outfit for newbie anglers. I would use a 10 to 15- pound test line, try using one outfit with 20-pound braided line when fishing for bigger fish. There are many brands on the market, and I find Fins Windtamer works best with almost no wind knots.

Summer Time! The month of June offers fantastic fishing near Inlets, beaches, inter coastal and spillways. These areas will offer a plethora of species to target.
The inlets and beaches are great areas to target snook as they begin to spawn. Local inlets will offer plenty of snook and tarpon target.
Live baits and DOA C.A.L. 4” jerk baits and 3” shad tails in pearl and figi chix, excellent colors for snook.
DOA Bait busters in pearl, glow / gold rush belly and Arkansas glow excellent choices for enticing snook to feed as well. Be sure to check the tides and locate good current for best ares to hook up with snook.
Anglers targeting tarpon can expect fantastic action along the beaches and inside the inlets. Tarpon can be seen rolling on the surface early in the morning as the sun is rising.
DOA Bait busters and DOA 5” Swim baits in glow and gold rush belly, pearl and greenback, teamed up with a ½ ounce jig head get the silver kings chewing. Be sure to work in front of tarpon pods leading the fish, this helps not to spook the pod tarpon. Do this and you will get your drag screaming.
The docks, seawalls and drop offs will hold plenty
of fish for anglers. Snook, tarpon, jacks, drum and tripletail can all be targeted. For fly fisherman this offers steady action as live chumming helps bring the predators boat side. Fly fishing is a blast and can be taught to novice anglers, whether it’s a 1 pound jack to a 20 pound tarpon, anglers can experience the thrill of fly fishing. Capt. Craig will make it easy for any angler give it a shot, fresh water to saltwater you will be hooked.
The palm beaches and Jupiter will be red hot! A plethora of species for anglers to target snook, tarpon, sharks, and jacks provide explosive action.
Snook anglers can target beaches, inlets and the ICW. The snook will school up in local inlets, along deep channels and beach fronts. Live bait schools are prevalent just about everywhere you look. Greenies, bait of choice for snook but pinfish and mullet will get the bite as well. DOA lures work great for the snook along the beaches, nothing beats a DOA C.A.L. 3” shad tail in bayou tiger or pearl color. Very active Back country!
There are a few things going on going on that’s sends me into the back country. The first one is the pea green water in Fl. Bay the second is there has been a great bite in Whitewater Bay. and then a S.W. wind. Pea green water out front sometimes turns into no fish. The backcountry has had a solid bite of Snook, Trout, Goliaths, and a few small Tarpon. There’s also Jacks, Ladyfish and plenty of Snappers.
I would like to Thank the companies that help me catch client’s fish. Biscayne rods, Pure fishing (Penn, Berkeley) Bajio, got to be able to see and No Live Bait Needed. If you add them all up, they lead to great days on the water. It’s fun working with these companies, giving them your opinions and teaching clients about their products.
I fished with Andrew who works over at No Live Baits Needed and Mike my buddy a great mechanic.
We started in the backcountry and got on some small Tarpon and Snook on the NLBN 3’ paddle tails at first light. We were only throwing NLBN products today and killed it. I had not been to the Tarpon Bay area in a long time and had guys that didn’t mind the long ride, It was hard getting there because we caught fish everywhere we stopped in big numbers. The Snook, Trout and Goliaths are really on fire back there.
Eventually we headed to Tarpon Bay big, where we managed some Snook including a 32-inch Snook caught by Andrew. The bite was tough, so we headed to the coast. We caught more Snook on No
baits. It was a great day lots of fish.
Today I am with John and his brother Fred at Flamingo. We started out in Whitewater Bay. Today was very similar to the other trip above. We fished No Live Bait Needed and had “incredible day”. The total numbers were 50 Trout, 30 snook and 20 Goliaths plus a bunch of Mangrove Snappers and Ladyfish. We used an assortment of colors and they all worked.
As u can see, I am excited about representing the “No Live Bait Needed”. It easy to use and it produces. The young kids know all about it and I enjoy discussing it with them. I met this kid (Dillon) today while fishing a spillway, He noticed my lure and asked Is that a NLBN, I said yes. He was all in and had 2 boxes full of their product. I gave him Andrew’s info and told him to give him a call. The next few months get hot and steamy and so does the fishing. Caught lookin charters is a family friendly charter. Bring the wife or kids and have a great day catching fish and sightseeing Everglades National Park. I also fish Biscayne Bay and Key Largo areas.
Killing it with # NLBN
The rain we had for the last 2 weeks has the Snook bite on fire. This happens every June, we get tons of water pushing out to Fl. Bay and the Snook love it. They are also in the backcountry, when it is blowing 15-20mph or more it’s a good back up plan. The fish are on the edges and points, so you just have to go fishing. I use the
lurking. The average size of the snook ranges from 5 to 30 pounds.
Silver king action will be explosive. The tarpon can be found lurking along the beaches and near deep channels. Tarpon school up, early morning risers get the best bite. Tarpon on the beach range from 50 to 130 pounds. The silver kings gathering in the inlet and Icw are willing to devour any greenie in their path, but don’t shy away from artificial baits. The DOA bait busters and DOA terror eyz in root beer or pearl provoke drag screaming action.
The ICW will offer great fishing for big jacks, sharks, bluefish and even some big triple tail. Docks, seawalls, and mangrove shorelines great areas to locate fish. Look for bait fish in the area as tell tale sign, predator fish are near by. Live baits and Rapala skitter walks or DOA Terror Eyz will get your drag screaming.

This week we started out on some small Tarpon and Snook to warm up. Jeff and Sarah hooked and caught a bunch of Tarpon and Snook on first stop. On our second spot we had a big Snook come loose but did catch a small one and a Redfish. Jeff finished up his Grand Slam with a Trout, Redfish Tarpon and Snook and Sarah got a Slam no Redfish. We had big numbers today!
I am with Greg his son Luke and friend Jack. We started out with Jack getting hooked up with a Tarpon on first cast. There was action for over 2 hours, hard to keep up with how many fish we caught. There was consistently a fish in the air whether a Snook or Tarpon. The kids were throwing NLBN lures, that’s all they use. We are a great match because for the last year that’s my lure of choice, you have to try it to believe it.
We caught well over a 100 fish including Tarpon, Snook, Trout, Redfish, Goliath Grouper, Jacks, Snappers, Ladyfish and Sharks. There are plenty of lures out there, I choose the NLBN ‘s because they get eaten by everything! If you have teenage kids, they are probably using NLBN lures. They are popular, get some!

OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the openair benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. After successful inspection you are awarded a vessel safety check sticker which is affixed to your vessel near your state registration sticker. FLORIDA BOATER’S ID CARD - Don’t forget that “Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 is required to either have successfully completed a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved boating education course or have passed a course equivalency or temporary certificate examination and have in their possession a boating education ID card and a photo identification card before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 HP or more in Florida.” Identification cards for persons completing the course or the equivalency exam are good for a lifetime. Temporary Certificate exams are made available to the public through contractors. The temporary certificate is valid for 12 months from the issue date. Vessel Safety Checks (VSC):
Vessel Safety Checks are a crucial component of the Clearwater Flotilla's mission to enhance boating safety. Trained and certified examiners will be available throughout the year to conduct complimentary VSCs for local boaters. These checks cover a variety of safety aspects, including life jackets, navigation lights, fire extinguishers, and other essential equipment. By participating in a VSC, boaters can ensure that their vessels meet all required safety standards, fostering a safer maritime environment for all.
Boat America Classes:
The Clearwater Flotilla is also pleased to announce the schedule for Boat America classes in 2024. These classes provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of boating safety, navigation rules, and emergency procedures. Whether you're a seasoned boater or a newcomer to maritime activities, these classes offer valuable insights and practical knowledge that can contribute to a safer and more enjoyable boating experience. SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license.
