BoatUS Foundation Opens Grant Program for $7.5M Effort to Remove Abandoned and Derelict Vessels from Nation’s Waterways
WHAT: In a nationwide effort to remove abandoned and neglected boats from our nation’s waterways, the Boat Owners Association of the United States (BoatUS) Foundation is seeking qualified, diverse and experienced organizations to submit projects for funding. The massive cleanup effort to remove abandoned and derelict vessels (ADV) in U.S. coastal waterways and the Great Lakes is fueled by a four-year, $10 million grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Marine Debris Program with funding provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Applicants are encouraged to submit a letter of intent between June 10 and August 12.
ADVs litter ports, waterways, and estuaries all over the country and can cause major problems. These boats can crush or smother sensitive plants and corals, sink or move during coastal storms, threaten safe navigation, and contribute to economic losses. Removing ADVs is a costly effort, often averaging more than $24,000 to remove a single boat. For many communities, there may be no local funding for removal of vessels, and navigating complicated funding programs can be challenging for communities with limited time or resources. This is why the BoatUS Foundation grant program is so important.
“We’re excited about building upon our years of experience with ADV removals,” said BoatUS Foundation Director of Outreach and Grant Program Director, Alanna Keating. “This is a unique program that is open to any organization, nonprofit or for-profit, as well as local, state, territorial, tribal, and regional government agencies. Some of our focus will be seeking underserved or marginalized communities that don’t have the local resources to rid their shores of abandoned and derelict vessels.”
“Abandoned and derelict vessels are a widespread problem across the United States,” said Nancy Wallace, Director of the NOAA Marine Debris Program. “We are
pleased to partner with the BoatUS Foundation to maximize our impact, while reducing the accumulation of costly and damaging debris in our ports, waterways, and coasts.”
WHY: The goal of the BoatUS Foundation program is to improve U.S. coastal and Great Lakes waters affected by ADVs and create a first-of-its-kind national online database to track ADV location and removal efforts. By removing the associated pollution, navigation and safety hazards ADVs can cause in waters for years, the 20-75 awardees of this grant program will have a lasting, positive impact on the environment and our waters locally and nationally for years to come.
HOW: Organizations are invited to apply for ADV removal funds by submitting a letter of intent that answers the following questions:
• Body of water from which the debris will be removed.
• The purpose of the project and the planned steps to complete it.
• Anticipated outcomes of the project on the environment and the community.
• How diversity, equity, justice and inclusion will be part of the project.
• Project budget and expenses to be covered by the grant funding.
• Authorizations and/or permits needed to complete the work.
Priority will be given to projects that include input from and benefit tribal, underserved, or low-income communities; demonstrate strong community support; benefit marine animals and their habitats, local coastal communities, and/or local economies; and include local outreach and education activities directed toward the boating community and general public to prevent abandoned and derelict vessels.

Blue World Completes Successful Testing of 200 Kw Maritime Fuel Cell System to Run on Green Methanol
Aalborg, Denmark, 25 June 2024 – After months of preparation, Blue World Technologies is proud to announce the successful testing of the world’s first 200 kW high-temperature PEM fuel cell module. The test was completed at the newly established test facilities in connection to the Blue Aalborg Factory, where the fuel cells for the system are produced. The initial testing has been completed with great results which has exceeded performance expectations.
With an electrical efficiency of up to 55% when reaching a commercial stage, the fuel cell system will typically provide a fuel saving of 20-30% which enables a cost-efficient use of green fuels. Additionally, the fuel cell system allows for up to 100% carbon capture for both utilisation in green fuel production and for storage.
“This is a major breakthrough within maritime decarbonisation and with the test of our 200-kW system, we are proving that the HT PEM fuel cell technology has the potential of being one of the key technologies to decarbonise the hard-to-abate sectors. During the test period, we successfully validated our system setup with the methanol fuel processor, the series connection of the fuel cell stacks, as well as the balance of plant components surrounding the fuel cells”, Dennis Naldal Jensen, Chief Technology Officer at Blue World Technologies explains.
1 MW system for Maersk: The first pilot system is a 1 MW system for onboard power production. The system will be installed on one of A.P. Moller - Maersk’s large dual fuel-enabled methanol vessels and the installation on board is expected during H1 2026.
“Having worked with fuel cell technology for more than 20 years, it is amazing for us to reach this stage of the technology development, where we with these large systems can provide a strong alternative to
an industry that is heavily dependent on fossil-based technologies”, says Anders Korsgaard, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer at Blue World Technologies and continues: “Maersk is the global frontrunner when it comes to maritime decarbonisation, and we are very pleased with the collaboration on the first 1 MW pilot and we are very much looking forward to getting the system out sailing”.
The order for the pilot system was followed by a venture investment by Maersk Growth – the venture arm of A.P. Moller - Maersk – where they at the end of 2023 participated in an 11 million EUR pre-C-round alongside The Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO), Cycle Group, and other new and existing shareholders. With the great potential of the HT PEM fuel cell technology, they are following the development and test of the system closely:
As an investor in Blue World Technologies, we are pleased to follow the progress of the system development and we share the team’s excitement for the successful testing of the 200-kW fuel cell system. The maritime industry needs multiple new technologies and pathways to reach its net-zero targets, and high-temperature PEM fuel cell technology is very promising in finding a balance between the high electrical efficiency, size, and load adjustment. This is a great example of how we can support innovation through both investment and partnership”, explains Alex Smout, Investment Director at Maersk Growth.
Blue World will initially supply systems for auxiliary power and expects that their maritime system will reach a commercial level in 2027. Eventually, the company will proceed to supply multi-megawatt propulsion systems for global shipping, which is where the fuel cell technology will provide the greatest impact on both the environment and climate.
The Blue World Maritime System
• The system is a scalable configuration, firstly aiming to replace conventional fossil-based gensets, but later also provided as large multimegawatt fuel cell-based propulsion systems.
• The system is built with a modular approach, allowing for fuel cell power systems as containerized solutions on deck or integrated on the ship.
• Expect to reach a commercial stage with the system for power production in 2027.
• With an efficiency of up to 55% when reaching commercial stage, the system typically provides a fuel saving of 20-30%.
• The system, that is based on high-temperature PEM fuel cell technology (HT PEM), provide high-grade waste heat of 150°C.
• When powered by renewable methanol, the system has a net-zero operation.
• The fuel cell system is ready for carbon capture, allowing for CO2 to be recycled or storage.
• With no NOx, SOx, or particle emissions, the fuel cell system does not cause any air
TIDES FOR FLORIDA’S GULF COAST: JULY 2024
TIDES FOR FLORIDA’S ATLANTIC COAST: JULY 2024
Captain’sCorner
with Captain Rick Grassett
Tarpon will still be a good option this month. Shallow water action for reds and big trout will be best early and late in the day. Some of the best action will be with trout, blues, pompano and more on deep grass flats. Catch and release snook fishing in the ICW at night or in the surf should also be good options.
Tarpon fishing should be good in the coastal gulf this month. Large schools of tarpon will dwindle in size and numbers to singles, doubles and small schools of post spawn fish during July. I usually find tarpon to be aggressive in July, with spawning completed and after a long migration, they usually feed aggressively. I also find them to be more curious this time of the year often swinging closer to check out the sound of a landing bait, lure or fly. Spin anglers will do best by setting up in travel lanes and drifting live baits under floats while staying ready to sight cast to fish that may pop up with no notice.
The DOA Baitbuster is my “go to” lure for tarpon. The DOA Swimming Mullet, 4” Shrimp and CAL 4” swim bait are also good choices depending on the situation.
This is my favorite time to fly fish for tarpon. The tactics are the same as earlier in the season, anchoring or staking out on travel routes, although fish are in a better mood. Unlike the large tarpon schools that we see around full and new moon phases in June, July fish are usually aggressive. Large schools of tarpon are impressive, but if you spook the lead fish you will spook all of them.
Tarpon will thin out towards the end of the month as they begin to move to inside waters of Sarasota Bay, Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor. They move into these areas to rest and feed following spawning. They can be targeted in these areas with flies, a variety of DOA lures or live bait. Also look for tarpon
feeding in schools of “breaking” ladyfish in these areas.
Catch and release snook fishing will be a good option this month. With very warm water this time of year, it is important to use tackle heavy enough to land them quickly. Spin anglers should do well fishing lighted docks and bridges in the ICW with CAL jigs with shad tails or jerk worms or DOA shrimp. Fly anglers should do well with clear intermediate sink tip lines and wide profile flies, such as Lefty’s Deceiver or EP flies, since larger baitfish may be more predominant. Docks and bridges close to passes should be the best ones. You’ll also find snook in the surf, where you can walk along the beach and sight cast to them in shallow water. Gibby’s DT Variation is a “go to” fly for many snook surf anglers.
You’ll find reds very active in shallow water this month. With plentiful baitfish and higher tides, they’ll spend more time feeding over shallow grass flats. Look for them along the edges of bars or in potholes when the tide is low or along mangrove shorelines and around oyster bars when the tide is high. You’ll also find big trout in many of the same areas where you find reds, but the bite for big trout is usually best early or late in the day. Surface walking top water plugs or fly poppers and Gurglers may draw some big explosions! Casting CAL jigs with shad tails or jerk worms ahead of your boat is a good way to locate reds. In my opinion it’s important to protect larger trout, which are usually female breeders. I like to drift deep grass flats and cast ahead of my drift with CAL jigs and shad tails or jerk worms, DOA Deadly Combos or Ultra Hair
Clouser flies tied on long shank hooks on sink tip fly lines to find trout. A drift anchor will slow your drift to a more manageable

speed if it’s windy. Look for birds or baitfish on the surface to find fish. You may find Spanish mackerel, blues, pompano and more mixed with trout on deep grass flats. Flats close to passes or on points that get good tidal flow are usually productive. In addition to tarpon, you might find false albacore (little tunny), tripletail or cobia in the coastal gulf this month. Look for albies feeding on the surface. I have seen large schools of albies “blitz” the beach while tarpon fishing this time of year. They are usually feeding on larger baits, such as threadfins or pilchards, so flies and lures should be sized accordingly. You might even find cobia swimming with tarpon or cruising bars in shallow water along the beach. You can use your tarpon fly or spin tackle for cobia, but a medium spinning outfit or an 8 to 9-weight fly rod will be better suited for mackerel and albies. I also occasionally run into tripletail this time of year, either around a crab trap buoy, navigational marker or floating debris.
There are lots of options this month, late season tarpon, snook in the surf or at night or fishing skinny water for reds or big trout. Tarpon fishing is best when sweat is pouring down your back, but you’ll want to fish early in the day in shallow water. Our natural resources are under constant pressure from red tides fueled by industrial, agricultural and residential runoff, toxic spills and discharges, freezes, increasing fishing pressure and habitat loss and degradation, please limit your kill, don’t kill your limit!

Snook Action has been solid, especially around the passes. The best times to target snook are at night and into the early morning hours. Once the sun comes up, the beaches and flats come alive. Snook are chasing live bait such as greenbacks, threadfins, and shrimp. Many anglers are also having success using flair hawks or soft plastics at night around the passes. This time of year, snook are active and aggressive, making for thrilling fishing experiences.
Redfish are biting well around the area, particularly along mangrove shorelines, oyster bars, and some local flats. Look for signs of mullet or birds in the upper bay and back bay areas to locate redfish. They are more active in the morning before the heat of the day sets in. At night, you can find them around dock lights by working the bottom. During higher tides, soaking dead baits along the mangroves offers great chances of hooking redfish.
Trout are abundant around deeper flats, potholes, and edges. They are actively feeding on soft plastics, white bait, and shrimp. The slight dip in water temperatures has made them more cooperative and easier to catch. Focus on these areas for consistent trout action, especially during the cooler parts of the day.
Tarpon action is expected to be particularly hot over the weekend with the full moon bringing big hill tides and a great flush of baits behind recent rains. Typically, big rains lead to a significant crab flush, which should entice tarpon to feed aggressively. This weekend is shaping up to be a prime time for targeting tarpon, so be prepared for some exciting battles.
Flounder are around the potholes, edges, and sandy bottoms near structures. They are ambush predators and will
bite anything that gets close to the bottom where they lie in wait. Targeting flounder can be rewarding as they are both fun to catch and excellent to eat.
Pompano action is happening but remains spotty. These fish are known for their erratic movements and small concentrations, making them challenging to stay on consistently. Look for likely areas, but be prepared to move around frequently to stay on the pompano bite.
Sharks are prolific on the beaches, around the mouth of the bay, and even back into our rivers. This time of year, virtually anywhere there is moving water, soaking a big dead bait can yield high chances of hooking sharks. Sharks are thrilling to target, and they are abundant, providing plenty of action for those looking to wrestle with these powerful fish.
Fishing Tips:
• Snook: Use live baits like greenbacks, threadfins, and shrimp, or try flair hawks and soft plastics at night.
• Redfish: Look for them around mangroves, oyster bars, and flats, and use dead baits during higher tides.
Trout: Target them with soft plastics, white bait, and shrimp around deeper flats and potholes.
Tarpon: Target them during the full moon with crab flushes, making it an ideal time to target them.
Flounder: Find them near sandy bottoms and structures, biting on bottom baits.
Pompano: Be prepared to move frequently to stay on their bite.
• Sharks: Use big dead baits in areas with
moving water.
Snook are biting well around the passes, beaches, and flats in the upper and back bay areas. The best times to target them are at night, early morning, or late afternoon, as the heat of the day tends to make them more lethargic. Live baits such as greenbacks, threadfins, and shrimp are effective, while flair hawks and soft plastics work well at night.
Trout action is thriving around dock lights and bridge lights at night, as well as the edges of the flats. They are particularly fond of live white bait and free-lined shrimp this time of year. If you prefer not to use soft plastics, these live baits will yield great results.
Tarpon activity is high around the mouth of the bay and on the bridges. With the new moon approaching, expect even more action as the tidal flushes bring these powerful fighters closer.
Sharks are abundant along the beaches and throughout the area. Big baits and heavy tackle are proving successful for those targeting these formidable predators.
Mangrove snapper are thick around most structures, responding well to smaller baits and lighter tackle setups with minimal weight. Live shrimp and cut threadfins are particularly effective.
Black drum are commonly found around docks, bridges, and even around mangroves. These strong fighters are biting on live shrimp and cut bait fished on the bottom.

Summer Lake Toho fishing report
The bass fishing on Lake Toho this summer has been some of the most consistent we’ve ever seen, and it’s due to some unique circumstances. Right now we have more hydrilla on the lake than ever before, and the invasive grass has actually made for some excellent bass fishing.
The water, which typically has a algae bloom at this time of year, is the cleanest I have ever seen during the summer, and the bass are loving it. We are averaging an incredible 30+ bass a day right now on just our 4 hour trips. With 40+ fish days happening multiple times a week.
The bass are schooling up like crazy in the large open areas out in the offshore hydrilla, and once you find one of these schools, it’s just one after another. The bulk of the fish we are catching right now on our charters are coming off of shiners.
With the live bait you can get in these schools and start catching. But for artificials, the bite has been largely on flukes, speedworms, chatterbaits, and jerkbaits. With some topwater action early if you’re in the right area.
You want to look for large mats of hydrilla and peppergrass, throwing speedworms and chatterbaits around the thicker hydrilla, and flukes and jerkbaits around the thinner areas of hydrilla and peppergrass.
This summer has been the best that I have seen in years for bass fishing on Lake Toho. So if you’re in the area on vacation or live around here, come spend a morning on Toho, and I promise you won’t be disappointed.
with Captain Mike Schulze
After the bad weather on Sunday, Tania did not want to go fishing on Monday. She suggested I go with Steven on my own. However, with plenty of room on the boat, I reached out to fellow Salt Strong Insider Keir and asked if he wanted to join us. He gladly accepted, and we all agreed to meet at the dock by 6:30 am, eager for the day’s adventure to begin.
As the first light of dawn broke, I found myself at the dock, eager for the day’s adventure to begin. The sight of the early risers already gathered at the dock only added to the excitement. The dockhands worked quickly to ensure we didn’t have to wait long for our boat.
With the marine and weather forecast in mind, I decided on our starting point- the boils- with the option to head to some shallow reefs if needed. About halfway to the boils, we were surprised to see bait fish everywhere. This unexpected sight led to a spontaneous decision to set up two sabiki rods. We spent about 15 minutes chasing bait, filling the live well with large pilchards. The abundance of bait was a pleasant surprise. After the unexpected bait stop, we continued to the boils, ready for whatever the day had in store for us.
We started drifting on the east end of the boils near the buoy, but without a bite and seeing nothing on the sonar, I moved to the west end to see if there was any life there. It didn’t take long for us to start getting some action. I was using my favorite jig,
a 60g nomad design gypsy jig, Keir was dropping a power prawn on a 1/2oz football jig head, and Steven was using a squidtrex. I also was freelining a pilchard.
We made multiple drifts on the west end, each producing fishing for us. Even though the bite was slow, it was steady. During our first drift, I caught an 18-inch black drum and saw a school of giant spotted eagle rays gracefully gliding under the boat. There were probably eight of them, all larger than five feet across. Most of our drifts produced throwback fish; however, at about 9:00 a.m., I got the bite I was hoping for.
After the first big run, I knew I had a permit on the line. It is an unmistakable fight. Unfortunately, this fight did not end with me putting a permit on the boat. About five minutes into the fight, I saw the permit surface about 20 yards from the boat. Unfortunately, a massive shark was chasing the permit. Once I realized what was happening, I opened my bail, hoping to get the permit and a chance to get away. Shortly after I opened my bail, the shark swam right by the boat with the permit in its mouth. I was really sad to have lost such a prized fish to a shark.
Shortly after my heartbreak, my buddy Keir hooked up. I am pretty sure he also had a permit; however, after a three-minute fight, he tightened his
drag and was broken off, so we never got to see the fish. This was a hard lesson learned by Keir; with light tackle and big fish, you need to let them wear themselves out and not try to horse them in.
At about 10:30 a.m., Steven switched to dropping live shrimp on the bottom with a split shot. This produced a short mutton snapper and two bonefish. Steven had never caught a bonefish, so he was pretty happy to have caught them.
At about 11:00 a.m., the wind picked up, and the water started getting sloppy, so we decided to head back in, knowing we had given it our best. Although I did not meet my goal of putting both my friends on permits, I felt we had a successful day as I saw my permit, and I was able to put my friend on his first bonefish.
Tania and I send our best wishes to all fellow anglers. May your fishing adventures be safe, blessed, and filled with tight lines and good times! Until next time, keep casting and chasing those dreams on the water.

We are having great action with snook and spotted seatrout. The snook are catch and release this time of year but the seatrout are very tasty and make for a great meal for our guests. Capt. Taylor Cowieson, 813-220-8725, On a Mission Fishing Charters.
Greg with his son Luke and friend Jack. We started out with Jack getting hooked up with a Tarpon on first cast. There was action for over 2 hours, hard to keep up with how many fish we caught. Capt. Hobales, Caught Lookin Charters, 305.333.8149.
Long time repeat client Wayne from Tennessee went with me 2 mornings, first morning was a mixed bag variety trip with lots of different species, day 2 we hit the flats at Mosquito Lagoon and landed this beautiful Redfish, CPR catch photo release. Captain Michael Savedow, Edgewater River Guide, 386-689-3781.
Fly angler Bob Snover, from NH, fished shallow water with me and caught and released his first red on a fly. Capt. Rick Grassett, Snook Fin-Addict Guide Service Inc. 941-923-7799.
Fishing in the Naples and Marco Island area has been great with tarpon running the beaches, snook, redfish, snapper, mackerel and sharks all active. Capt. Mark Ward, Everglades Guide Service, 239-450-9230.

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630)674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. The inspection is a courtesy, so no action is taken if problems are found. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. To get more information or to schedule an inspection, contact Howard Bush at (305)731-3580. Anyone interested is invited to attend. Contact Flotilla Commander Howard Bush for more information at (305)731-3580.
A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. No record of any possible deficiencies will be reported to the USCG, state agency or any other authority. Want to know more about this complimentary Vessel Safety Check program? Contact Peter Burns at (772) 486-2684 or burnspet@aol.com. St. Lucie River Power Squadron, one of more than 300 squadrons nationwide, also offers safe boating classes to the public. Check on their website, www.slrps.org, when classes will resume. Information about the parent organization is available at www.usps.org.
