GPS/NAVIGATION FOR MARINERS, INPERSON BOATING SAFETY COURSE –AUGUST 10 – CAPE HAZE - The Coast Guard
Auxiliary, Flotilla 99, Cape Haze is offering a GPS For Mariners,in-person boating safety course,on Saturday, August 10, 2024. The7-hour class will be held at the South Gulf Cove HOA pavilion, 14859 Ingraham Blvd., Port Charlotte, starting at 8:00am and finishing at approximately 3:30 pm. Pre-registration is required to maintain class size. The course is taught by Auxiliary members who patrol and are very familiar with south Charlotte Harbor, Gasparilla Sound, Pine Island Sound, South Gulf Cove and Boca Grande areas. The course is divided into two sessions. The first teaches the skills to read a nautical chart, determine depth of water, location, buoys and day markers, night identification and speeddistance-bearing. The second the skills to understand and use GPS equipment to determine your location, and as an aid to navigate to and from desired destinations. Participants will learn the concept of using and storing waypoints, routes and tracks in GPS equipment as a valuable tool to assist navigation for trip planning and execution. Cost for the class is: $45 per person; $60 per couple sharing workbook; $15 per middle or high school student. AMERICA'S BOATING CLUB'S COCOA BEACH - On September 14, 2024, America's Boating Club's Cocoa Beach will provide the nationally approved safe boating course, ABC3, required by the State of Florida for anyone born after January 1, 1988. Successful completion will result in the Florida Boating Identification card. The one-day class will be held at Port Canaveral Yacht Club, 910 Mullet Road, Cape Canaveral from 9AM-4PM. One free book per family with registration fee of $20 for one person and $10 for up to three family members. UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida.
The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630)674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. The inspection is a courtesy, so no action is taken if problems are found. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemicfree aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin
County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. COAST GUARD AUXILIARY OFFERS VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS AND SAFE BOATING CLASSES
- A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. After successful inspection you are awarded a vessel safety check sticker which is affixed to your vessel near your state registration sticker. FLORIDA BOATER’S ID CARD - Don’t forget that “Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 is required to either have successfully completed a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved boating education course or have passed a course equivalency or temporary certificate examination and have in their possession a boating education ID card and a photo identification card before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 HP or more in Florida.” Identification cards for persons completing the course or the equivalency exam are good for a lifetime. Temporary Certificate exams are made available to the public through contractors. The temporary certificate is valid for 12 months from the issue date. Vessel Safety Checks (VSC):
Vessel Safety Checks are a crucial component of the Clearwater Flotilla's mission to enhance boating safety. Trained and certified examiners will be available throughout the year to conduct complimentary VSCs for local boaters. These checks cover a variety of safety aspects, including life jackets, navigation lights, fire extinguishers, and other essential equipment. By participating in a VSC, boaters can ensure that their vessels meet all required safety standards, fostering a safer maritime environment for all.
Boat America Classes: The Clearwater Flotilla is also pleased to announce the schedule for Boat America classes in 2024. These classes provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of boating safety, navigation rules, and emergency procedures. Whether you're a seasoned boater or a newcomer to maritime activities, these classes offer valuable insights and practical knowledge that can contribute to a safer and more enjoyable boating experience. Participation in Boat America Classes is open to boaters of all experience levels, and successful completion may result in valuable discounts on boat insurance.

SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. The cost for materials is $40 for the first member of a family and $10 each per additional family member. For more information, please call C. The FLA is not just a club for professional anglers, they are promoting saltwater lure fishing at all levels, especially among beginners. They do this by offering Junior, Teen and Lady “Angler of the Year” titles as a complement to our Club “Angler of the Year” title. Anglers will compete for points in an annual series of up to 10 tournaments to win these coveted titles Furthermore, we encourage a family environment by allowing Junior and teen Anglers to join in as an addition to our normal two-adult per boat limit. Guests are welcome to come and join our monthly meetings and listen to our guest speakers who discuss a wide variety of fishing techniques and helpful tips for all anglers. Meetings are held the last Monday of every month at the Mudville Grille located at 3105 Beach Blvd. Doors are open at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7:00 p.m.
