BoatUS Foundation Offers New Florida 90Day Temporary Boating Certification Course for Renters

Nonprofit leader in boating safety makes renting a boat on vacation easy, affordable.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., July 30, 2024 – Vacationers headed to Florida and planning to rent a boat now have an easy and low-cost way to earn their temporary boating safety certificate. The nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water now offers a 90-day temporary certification course for boat renters online at BoatUS.org/FLtemp for only $8.99.

The 25-question course is not only good for visitors but may also help Florida residents who don’t own a boat seek out their first rental. Of course, both vacationers and residents can also choose to take the BoatUS Foundation’s NASBLA- and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission-approved online state boating safety course, which offers the only free way to earn a Florida boating safety certificate that never expires.

“Florida is the number-one state in the country for boat and PWC rentals,” said Alan Dennison, education program manager for the BoatUS Foundation, which has been a leader in boating safety for more than 40 years. “We want to save people money so we chose to price our course the lowest. We also want give folks more options for earning their boating safety certification by offering a 90-day temporary certification course alongside our longstanding free state- and U.S. Coast Guard-approved online course.”

The 90-day Florida temporary certification course must be completed in one sitting, while the more extensive, free online state boating course can be started, stopped and resumed at your convenience. Both courses allow course takers to print their boating safety certification – either 90-day temporary or lifetime Boater Education ID Card – upon completion.

Understanding Tides: What Every Boater Should Know

Because of the sun and moon’s gravitational pull, oceans, rivers, and lakes are in constant motion. Therefore, it’s not uncommon for boaters to navigate various water levels in a single boating adventure!

Understanding tides is something every boater should know, as it’s necessary for a safe and enjoyable experience on the water. If you aren’t sure where to begin, we’re covering everything you need to know about tides for boating down below.

Types of Tides

Tides refer to the rising and falling of sea levels according to the sun and moon’s gravitational pull. Here’s a quick overview of the most common types of tides:

1. High Tides

As the name suggests, high tides occur when the water level is at its highest. Boating during high tide is always fun, as there’s plenty of water to navigate within, and it’s easy to avoid obstacles.

2. Low Tides

The opposite of high tides, low tides mean the water is at its lowest. It’s important to be extra careful when boating during low tide, as the water is shallower. Therefore, it’s easier to hit obstacles lurking beneath the surface.

3. Incoming Tides

An incoming tide means the tide is approaching the shoreline – moving from low to high tide.

4. Outgoing Tides

Opposite of incoming tides, outgoing tides describe the water moving away from the shoreline – transitioning from high to low tide.

5. Slack Tides

Slack tides refer to the short period between incoming and outgoing tides. At this point, the current is at its weakest.

6. Neap Tides

Neap tides occur during the first and third quarters of the moon’s phases. During these phases, the sun and moon become perpendicular to one another, weakening their gravitational pull. Therefore, the difference between high and low tide is less dramatic.

7. Spring Tides

Unlike the name, spring tides have nothing to do with the spring season. Instead, they happen during the full and new moon phases. At this time, during the moon’s cycle, the Earth, sun, and moon all align on the same plane. This phenomenon creates a stronger gravitational pull, causing the difference between high and low tides to become exceptionally large.

Understanding Tidal Currents

Tidal currents occur alongside the rising and falling of the tides. Essentially, the vertical motion of the tides causes the water to move horizontally and create currents. When a tidal current moves toward the land, it is said to “flood.” And when the current moves toward the sea, it “ebbs.”

Like tides, tidal currents are affected by the moon’s different phases. When the moon is full or new, tidal currents are strong (called “spring currents”). And when the mood is in the first or third quarter phase, the currents are weaker (called “neap currents”).

How Tides Affect Boat Handling

Most coastal areas experience two high tides over 24 hours. They occur 12 hours and 25 minutes apart – taking approximately six hours for the water to transition from high to low tide (or vice versa).

Here’s how the changing tides and currents affect boat handling:

Docking - When you prepare to dock your boat, you need to keep the tides in mind. Docking is easiest during slack tide, as the minimal water movement is ideal (as long as the wind isn’t strong).

Docking during high tide minimizes the risk of running aground, as you have more water to work with. However, the increased water level can make some boat docks

more challenging to access.

On the other hand, docking during low tide increases the risk of hitting underwater obstacles. Additionally, your boat’s draft (the distance between the waterline and the deepest point of your vessel) might pose an additional challenge.

Beaching - Beaching your boat for a family picnic at a local island or sandbar? Make sure to check the tide conditions beforehand! As you can imagine, it is easiest to reach the shore during high tide. But if you stay too long, you risk getting stuck during low tide.

Launching - We always recommend planning your boating arrivals and departures around the tides. Try to enter and leave the marina during high tide, as it generally offers the smoothest sailing and docking opportunities.

Cruising - The greater the separation between low and high tides, the faster the current will be. Keep a reliable tide chart handy to ensure smooth sailing!

Chargrilled Florida Oysters

Ingredients

• Two dozen fresh Florida oysters, shucked and on the half shell

• 1 stick unsalted butter

• Hot sauce (your favorite), to taste

• 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped fine

• 3 lemons

(1 for juice, 2 cut for garnish)

• 1 loaf crusty French bread

• ¼ cup Parmesan cheese, grated

• Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Preparation:

Pre-heat charcoal or gas grill. In a small sauce pot combine butter, hot sauce and lemon juice, season with salt and fresh ground pepper; place on the grill to melt, stir to combine. Taste and adjust with more lemon or hot sauce if needed.

Carefully place the oysters (in the half shell) directly on the grill. Cook for several minutes until the oysters start to bubble. Carefully spoon the butter over the oysters (butter can cause the fire to flare up). Sprinkle oysters with Parmesan cheese and parsley and serve with fresh lemon and French bread.

E1 Teams in Race to Make Lasting Impact on Aquatic Ecosystems

LONDON, 25 July 2024 – The pioneering UIM (Union Internationale Motonautique) E1 World Championship, the world’s first all-electric raceboat series, has unveiled the E1 Blue Impact Championship. The new sustainability-focused league table will challenge Championship teams to drive positive impact by mobilising society to reverse effects on ocean and aquatic ecosystems.

The E1 Blue Impact Championship forms part of its Blue Impact Programme, in which the racing Championship collaborates with host cities, partners, NGOs and scientists to address coastal habitat issues through knowledge transfer meetings, panels and workshops.

The initiative, which is being trailed this season before rolling out in season two, will see the Championship’s nine teams, owned by high-profile celebrities including Will Smith, Tom Brady, and Rafael Nadal, compete in a race to become the E1 Impact Champion.

To climb the rankings, teams must take action in a bid to secure a blue future through

activations such as support for aquatic conservation and restoration programmes and helping advance research and technology to protect marine habitats.

At the end of each season, beginning with the current season, fans will vote for the team to be named Blue Impact Champion. These votes, which account for a third of the total score, will be supplemented with the votes of an expert jury, made up of renowned ocean scientists and conservationists, who will account for the remainder of the score.

Below the surface of E1’s adrenaline fuelled electric racing series lies a vision to restore and protect coastal waters and ecosystems through cutting-edge clean technologies and proactive aquatic regeneration.

OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Beat the Heat and Catch the Fish - August

2024 August is one of the hottest months of the year, and therefore not my favorite month for fishing. I would rather do all those honey do’s you haven’t done and work on preparing your fishing tackle for September. However, my mind and body need some time on the water, so I break up my time several ways to accommodate my yearning.

The good part is less traffic on the water, which gives you more room to work on the mangroves and bridges. Here are some ideas on how to make August fishable. First start early and quit early or try fishing at night.

Bridges are your friend this time of year, giving you cover from the sun and thunderstorms during the day and nighttime. The bridge lights bring the night critters out to eat like tarpon, redfish, mangrove snapper, snook and big speckled trout. If you want to catch some big boys try bottom fishing with cut blue crabs heavy spinning tackle with 1-to-2-ounce sinkers 3/0 kahle circle hook. Catching those black drums that call the bridges their home during the summer months is a blast and after a few of them on the hook you are worn out in no time. The morning bite starts from daybreak to 10 am with mangrove snapper, snook, trout, jacks, black drum and mackerel. The evening bite about an hour before sunset and the darker the night the better the bite as the lights from the bridge bring the baitfish and shrimp to the surface. If your boat has underwater lights use them, they draw bait fish under the boat which bring the big trout to feed.

Flats are best fished early before water temperatures get too

high once that sun gets up around 10 or 11 am the flats tend to warm up to the point where the fish rather sit than chase bait fish around for food. My favorite technique in August is using cut bait on the bottom and letting the big girls rooming the flats for food take my meal. Top on my list is ladyfish, threadfin sardines and pinfish in that order. Use a 2/0 or 3/0 Kahale hook with a #4 split shot just above the hook put as many rods out spaced about 10 to 15 feet apart and let it soak sooner or later that big redfish or snook will take it the bad side is you will catch rays and catfish but well worth it.

Here are a few tips to help occupy your spare time.

• Give your reels a good cleaning by loosening the drags and lubricating the gears. If you do not feel comfortable doing this there are several good tackle dealers in Tampa who can service your reels at a reasonable price.

• Check your line guides on the rods for any scratches or nicks. Use cotton swabs or borrow a panty hose from your wife when she is not looking and cut it into small strips. It will last a long time, so do not worry, she will not miss one panty hose. Now run the cotton swab or piece of panty hose through the guide. If the panty hose clings or the cotton sticks to the guide, replace the guide or risk losing a fish later. A slight scratch or cut on the guide will cut your line under pressure from a pulling fish.

• At the end of the day never put your hook on the guide, as this can and will scratch the guide. If you rod doesn’t have a hook catcher built in take an electrical nylon tie with a screw hole built in and place it just above the top grip on the rod. This allows a place for the hook to sit.

• Most anglers take too much tackle on a fishing trip. Remember the last time you went on a vacation with your wife, and she brought half the closet along? There are many new small soft sided tackle boxes that can handle all your needs. I suggest you leave most of your tackle at home and replenish your tackle box as needed. In addition, small pill bottles work great for hooks and small sinkers to keep on the console of the boat and use a needed.

Now all honey do’s are done, and your tackle is ready for fishing. Remember, fishing heats up as the water temperature drops.

Mangrove snapper bite is starting to peak and some of the bigger ones can be found on many of the artificial reefs, bridge palings and rock piles in Tampa Bay. I use an extra-long leader of 20-pound fluorocarbon with either a #1 or 1/0 circle hook, glow bead between the hook and the leader, and the lightest sinker I can get away with to keep the bait on the bottom. Small greenback sardines, live shrimp, sandfleas, or fiddler crabs all work well, the bites are going to take place about an hour before the change of tide.

September will bring lower water temperatures and an increase in fish activity. Look for snook cruising the mangrove shorelines; flounder will hit jigs tipped with shrimp or Fishbites Chunks bounced on the bottom around sand patches in the grass flats. Mackerel action steps up a notch with water temperature starting to drop and redfish will move further out into the flats during high tide look for small crabs and shrimp.

The weather can play a huge role in flats fishing over the next few months due to tropical influences with depressions, storms, and hurricanes. Tide elevations fluctuate wildly. Rainfall can be heavy, changing the salinity levels, and breezy weather can move bait and the fish you target to catch. Air and water temperatures fluctuate when we have cloudy skies and heavy thunderstorms. All of these factors, regardless of how bad they may seem, can really turn on the bite.

A fluctuating barometer almost always triggers a bite, but where feeding fish will be found in the water column will be directly related to barometric pressure, water temperature, and available light. These are special considerations for anglers who target their species with artificial lures.

Finger mullet, pinfish, and pilchards, aka whitebait, are prime forage in the fall. These baitfish will typically be found on the surface or upper-to-mid-water column. Having no eyelids, the eyes of most fish are somewhat sensitive to direct sunlight. An overcast day allows easier surface feeding. Water surface temperatures

in both early morning and on cloudy days hold more oxygen, making fish more energetic at the surface and increasing metabolism, encouraging fish to eat. Surface lures such as the 94MR18 MirrOlure Top Dog, a finger mullet profile, and their new Duke Dog, a pilchard/ pinfish profile, provide flash and rattling sounds along with vibration that attracts predators like big trout, snook, redfish, and more. Rapidly dropping barometric pressure can send fish to the shallows.

For fish that are mid-water column in the shallows, from 1 to 2-foot depths, suspending lures such as the Berkley Stick Shad 90, or 17MR MirrOlure MirrOdine are deadly with their pilchard/ pinfish profile.

Redfish are bottom feeders for the most part, but they will feed anywhere in the water column, although their mouths are underslung on the bottom of the jaw, making it difficult to feed on the surface. Lures like jigs such as the CAL Shad, that can be crawled on the bottom or bumped over the tops of the grass, and weedless gold spoons such as the Eppinger Rex Spoon that can get through thick grass without hanging up on weeds or debris that can with its flash

resemble a pinfish, or possibly the best imitation of a top prey, the DOA Shrimp, that almost everything eats.

The lure profile might be the most important choice with artificial lures followed by a close second being the size of the lure. During moderately warm weather with a cooling trend, metabolism will be in high gear, meaning digestion is rapid, and there is a desire for more or larger foods to supply the need to build body fat.

When the cold days of winter hit later in the year, it’s time to scale down the bait sizes to satisfy a waning appetite. Slower digestion means smaller, easily digested foods are the forage most sought after. Small baitfish like pinfish and pilchards typically will move out into deep water or into the gulf, leaving mud minnows in the backcountry waters and shrimp. The shrimp being the slowest moving bait will be the main targeted forage.

August! Weather is hot, kids are back in school and the waters are teaming with a plethora of species to target. Anglers can expect drag screaming action in back bays, inter coastal and along beaches. Beaches and passes are great areas to target snook. Passes have fast current and the snook hang near bottom structure. Live baits fished on the bottom are the best way to hook up with a snook. Artificial lure lovers nothing beats catching a monster snook jigging. A DOA C.A.L. 4 inch jerk bait in bayou tiger or Arkansas glow on a 3/8 ounce jig head triggers strikes. The key is to have the bait near the bottom and present a natural presentation. The snook range in size from 10 to 30 pounds.

Tarpon! Many anglers favorite to target, tarpon fishing can be best at sunrise and sunset. The tarpon can be seen rolling on the surface just off the beaches and inside local inlets. Inlets are prime location for the tarpon, fish the edges of passes with live baits for best results. Usually the first of incoming and outgoing are the best tides for tarpon. The average size of the tarpon is 15 to 80 pounds with bigger fish found on the beaches.

The ICW is full of bait providing great action for anglers targeting a variety of species from snook, tarpon, jacks, and triple tail and many other species. Docks and seawalls are the prime location for all the above species along with mangrove shorelines. The best times to fish is early morning and late afternoon due to cooler water

temps. The middle of the day fishing can be brutal and very stagnant for anglers do to extremely high water temps.

September Palm beach fishing is usually fantastic! Fall mullet run migration invades the Palm Beaches. Bait schools push south and the predator fish follow putting on quite a spectacle.

Snook fishing is excellent as they can be targeted along beaches, inlets, seawalls and docks. Top water Rapala skitter walk is an excellent choice for explosive strikes. DOA bait busters entice snook to strike near surface and sub surface. The mullet schools are great areas to locate snook, typically morning and evenings are the best times to fish. Bridges and docks provide plenty of action, channel edges also produce plenty of drag screaming action as well. Snook gather in pods at times, average size of the snook ranges from 5 to 25 pounds.

The flats and ICW great areas to target snook, jacks, goliath grouper, drum, and many other species for rod bending action. Nothing beats seeing a predator fish exploding on a live bait, it puts a smile on everyone’s face.

End of month report July 2024The second half of July got HOT and the fishing was still good with most trips being fun “catch whatever is fun” trips. These are great trips because we can focus on the best fishing, not necessarily a specific species. My trips were with Scott, then Ray and his friend Evan, Tom, Danny and his kids and I wrapped up the month with local regular clients Armon and Josh. On my trip with Ray, he got his first Miami bonefish but it was tough fishing. The rest of the trips were great in that we targeted different species. Tom and his wife caught a bunch of species to eat including yellow jacks, mangrove snappers and school master snappers. With Danny we caught some blue runners and used them for shark bait where they hooked a bunch of lemon sharks on the flats before we turned our attention to dinner and they took home over a half dozen yellow jacks. The last trip of the month was with Armon and Josh and as always we target dinner and the yellow jacks did not disappoint. But, we caught a bunch of other species including targeting, hooking then using a big 30 lb barracuda. That was fun!

The first week of July was off to a hot start. The first week I was fishing with repeat client Ron and we fished in Biscayne Bay and Everglades National Park. Ron had never fished the Everglades before and after we did so on day two, he wanted to come back every day after that. Admittedly, the fishing was not on fire but we caught fish and Ron had a blast catching lemon sharks on the flats, averaging 12 hook ups per trip!

Over the week, the species were varied with Ron catching bonefish, snook, redfish, sharks and jacks. What a cool week with Ron!

The following trip was with Brittany, her husband Fransisco and their little girl. We decided to shark fish the Biscayne Bay flats and had a great time fighting lemon sharks in 2 feet of water.

My last trip of the first half of the month was with regular

client Chris and his wife Ashley. They are such cool people and we had tons of shots at tailing bonefish on fly in super calm, super shallow conditions at day break. As the tide dropped we had to move off before we got stuck and fished another area where Chris got his bonefish of the trip. We have fished a few times already and he told me this was his 10th bonefish caught with me. Wow!

Snook are active along the beaches, the passes and the adjacent bays. Live pilchards work best although jigs and plugs also work. As usual this time of year we get some bigger snook up to the high thirties… that’s inches. Capt. Mark Ward, Everglades Guide Services, 239-450-9230.
