Gearing up for the Fall
September is an exciting time for me everything starts to kick in, if all goes well the weather starts giving us a break with some cooler mornings and less thunderstorms, the perfect time to start fishing again. One thing I do every year in September is I go through all my fishing gear that includes tackle, rods, reels, lures, soft baits and fishing line to make sure they are ready for the fall.
Here are a few tips.
• Give your reels a good cleaning by loosening the drags and lubricating the gears. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this there are several good tackle dealers in the Tampa Bay area who can service your reels at a reasonable price.
• Check your line guides on the rods for any scratches or nicks. Use cotton swabs or borrow a panty hose from your wife when she’s not looking and cut it into small strips. It will last a long time, so don’t worry, she won’t miss one panty hose. Now run the cotton swab or piece of panty hose through the guide. If the panty hose clings or the cotton sticks to the guide, replace the guide or risk losing a fish later. A slight scratch or cut on the guide will cut your line under pressure from a pulling fish.
•At the end of the day never put your hook on the guide, as this can and will scratch the guide. Instead, take an electrical nylon tie with a screw hole built in and place it just above the top grip on the rod. This allows a place for the hook to sit many new rods now come with a hook holder but many of us have older rods this method will make your guides last longer and loss less fish,
•Most anglers take too much tackle on a
fishing trip. Remember the last time you went on a vacation with your wife, and she brought half the closet along? There are many new small soft sided tackle boxes that can handle all your needs. I suggest you leave most of your tackle at home and replenish your tackle box as needed. In addition, a small waterproof plastic divided tray with a watertight seal lid works great for hooks and small sinkers to keep on the console of the boat and use a needed.
• Braided fishing line should be replaced at least once a year here is a suggestion always fill your spool full of line do not add backing on your first fill depending on how often you use your tackle every couple of months reverse your line on the spool adding some monofilament line to the bottom of the spool this brings you line up back to your starting point. Try it and save money also keeps you casting distance up.
Now the honey do’s are done, and your tackle is ready for fishing. Remember, fishing heats up as the water temperature drops.
September will bring lower water temperatures and an increase in fish activity. Look for snook cruising the mangrove shorelines; flounder will hit jigs tipped with shrimp bounced on the bottom around sand patches in the grass flats.
Mackerel action steps up a notch and redfish will move further out into the flats during high tides.

Island the weather has been great for a 4 hour morning fishing charter. There is very little wind and it gets very warm in the middle of the day during August. We also have the potential for afternoon thunderstorms on a regular basis. This is a great time of year to visit Anna Maria Island because there it is a slower time of year as far as tourism goes. Most of the local kids are going back to school this week and next so there is not much traffic on the island. After Tropical Storm Debby it took about a week for the wind to subside back to normal conditions for this time of year. There was a lot of freshwater runoff that went into the Manatee River and Tampa Bay during the storm. After the storm the dam for Lake Manatee was opened to release water into the manatee river. The water is a very tannin color but there is still solid fishing going on.
The redfish are showing up in great numbers post storm. This time of year they group up into schools to eat and spawn. Finding a school of these

Weedon Island holds to this date many secret spots still left to be found it’s the Gem of upper Tampa Bay with mud holes, grass flats, oyster beds creeks learn this area well and you will get rewarded.

fish can make for some great action. Sometimes they can be spotted in shallow water cruising the grass flats making a pronounced wake as they search for food and avoid predators. Since Tropical Storm Debby and the influx in fresh water the bait has been a little tougher to come by as it moved out to deeper, cleaner water with better salinity. The mangrove snapper are not too fond of the fresh water influx but they have not gone anywhere, they are biting better and better as the water gets back to normal. August is a good month to target the mangrove snapper in Tampa Bay. Once the bait starts to show in the normal areas again the fishing for seatrout, ladyfish, and Spanish mackerel will be a great option for action and some fish to bring home for dinner. There are a good amount of larger snook around right now and as they start to work their way back in from the beaches and passes they will be a good target for the next 3-4 weeks. Snook season starts September 1 and goes until December 1.
As we get closer to fall the fishing is going to get better and better. The next few months are my favorite time to be fishing in Tampa Bay. Evening Trout Run: A Quick Success
I had a few free hours yesterday and decided to hit the water. Tania had some things to take care of, so I reached out to my buddy Vern, a fellow Salt Strong Insider, and we met at the dock around 4:00 p.m. With only until 5:30 p.m. to fish, we set our sights on catching trout, heading to a spot where Vern had some luck the day before.
About 20 minutes in, I got tangled up with a nasty wind knot. After re-rigging, I decided to switch to a cork popper, which turned out to be a great decision. My first catch in a few weeks was a solid-sized Jack Crevalle. Considering we were fishing during slack tide, I wasn’t expecting much, and I was just happy to be out on the water.
By 5:30 p.m., we had boated six trout, one jack, and one mutton snapper, though we lost a few trout right at the boat. I started using a 4-inch Mulligan in a slam shady color with a chartreuse tail. I’m not sure what Vern was using, but whatever
it was, it worked well for him. We made it back to the dock by 6:05 p.m., and I got home around 6:30 p.m., a little late, but Tania was ok with it, especially since I managed to catch a trout to bring home!

Summer Heat has arrived, and the fishing has actually been more consistent. July August and September are usually our slowest time. The heat, schools starting, and of course the nice weather up north keeps tourist from flocking down to the southernmost point. The visitors might now be coming in drones but the fish seem to be. The mahi fishing has been consistent, even more than May and June. Although unless you find something floating schools have not been prevalent. We have been picking up one or two fish through-out the day averaging a fish every 20 min. Wahoo, Marlin, and Sailfish have also been being caught in the fleet almost on a daily basis.
Bonefishing has been on fire in the back country. I used to tell people if they want a epic bonefish bite go to the Bahamas. Now it seems like we may be the new destination for these strong fighting fish. Capt Tony on the Pathfinder has been finding and catching these fish every
trip. He reported seeing schools of 10-20 fish the entire morning yesterday! With the little wind and big tides permit and tarpon have been sighted and hooked as well.
What have we done lately?
Fishy Business Charters has been busy with installing new engines on both boats. Fishing tournaments, chartering, and prepping for season. We fished the Lower Keys Dolphin Tournament Securing 2nd place with a nice bull dolphin on the first day! The VFW Tournament we caught a ton of fish but ended up not finding a fish to place. The Key West Marlin tournament was exciting this year! The 3 day tournament had many marlins hooked and caught. We sat in 5th place day 1. On Day 2 we moved up sitting in 2nd with another sailfish release. Day 3 we got our fun fish a sailfish quickly and went for the big one. One boat got two blue marlin that day! A two marlin day is almost unheard of these days at least in the Florida
keys. At the end of the day we didn’t get our shot at a marlin and ended the tournament sitting in 5th place out of 39 boats. Overall we did well in all the tournaments and made a showing on the board.
Looking back at my notes last year we had successful fishing offshore and on the reef with mahi mahi and snappers/ groupers in September. October last year we saw one of the best wahoo bites that we have seen in years especially the 3 days before and after the full moon. We did well with swordfishing getting hooked up on every trip as well. If some of these fish are on the Bucket list September and October might be the time to come down!

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630)674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. CLASSES - The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Clearwater Flotilla is pleased to unveil its comprehensive schedule for Vessel Safety Checks (VSC) and Boat America classes for 2024. Dedicated to promoting boating safety and education within the community, the Clearwater Flotilla continues its commitment to ensuring that local boaters are equipped with the knowledge and resources necessary for a safe and enjoyable time on the water.
Vessel Safety Checks (VSC):
Vessel Safety Checks are a crucial component of the Clearwater Flotilla's mission to enhance boating safety. Trained and certified examiners will be available throughout the year to conduct complimentary VSCs for local boaters. These checks cover a variety of safety aspects, including life jackets, navigation lights, fire extinguishers, and other essential equipment. By participating in a VSC, boaters can ensure that their vessels meet all required safety standards, fostering a safer maritime environment for all.
Boat America Classes: The Clearwater Flotilla is also pleased to announce the schedule for Boat America classes in 2024. These classes provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of boating safety, navigation rules, and emergency procedures. Whether you're a seasoned boater or a newcomer to maritime activities, these classes offer valuable insights and practical knowledge that can contribute to a safer and more enjoyable boating experience. Participation in Boat America Classes is open to boaters of all experience levels, and successful completion may result in valuable discounts on boat insurance.

Boat America Classes are $50 per person, including all books and materials conducted over Zoom from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM: August 24 and 25; September 28 and 29; October 26 and 27; November 28 and 29.

SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. The cost for materials is $40 for the first member of a family and $10 each per additional family member. For more information, please call C. 1 tablespoon ancho chili powder
1 tablespoon cumin
1 tablespoon garlic powder
2 tablespoons black pepper
3 cups ketchup
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons all-purpose seasoning, divided Fresh herbs for garnish (such as parsley, cilantro, or thyme), finely chopped
Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
Cooking oil spray
8 bamboo skewers (soaked in water for 1 hour) or metal skewers
Preparation:
In a medium sauce pot, combine all ingredients except for the shrimp and 1 tablespoon all-purpose seasoning. Cook over low-medium heat until the guava paste is dissolved, about 30 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Remove guava BBQ sauce from heat and set aside.
Make skewers by adding an even number of shrimp to each skewer. Lightly season the completed skewers with the 1 tablespoon of unused all-purpose seasoning. Preheat the grill or a large saute pan to medium-high heat. Lightly spray the skewers with cooking oil spray. Carefully add the shrimp skewers to the grill or saute pan and cook until the shrimp are just done, about 2 minutes on each side. Glaze the cooked shrimp with the guava BBQ sauce. Remove from heat and serve warm with extra guava BBQ on the side.
