- Yanmar Marine International (YMI) has launched the E-Saildrive, its first electric propulsion product designed to provide an easy transition to emission-free sailing.
Launched globally at Cannes Yachting Festival and Newport International Boat Show, the E-Saildrive range utilizes a ‘plug and play’ platform for easy installation and connection. This, combined with an integrated gear, motor, motor controller, and cooling system, makes the switch to 100% electric boating quicker and easier.
Installation and connection are simple. The E-Saildrive is available in three models – the SDe7, the SDe10 and the SDe15, delivering up to 15kW of power for sailboats under 40ft (depending on application and displacement).
The drive is a drop-in replacement for a
Yanmar YM engine, one of the most popular sailboat engines. No hull modifications are needed – making it easy for the boatbuilder to offer interchangeably or introduce an SDe refit. The power of choice is with the customer.
As one of the world’s most established marine engine manufacturers, Yanmar is renowned for the reliability and performance of its HVO-approved combustion engines and the E-Saildrive series is designed to this same standard of engineering.

Does Wind Affect Fishing? 7 Tips for Fishing in the Wind
So, does wind affect fishing? According to an old fishing proverb, “Wind from the east, fish bite the least; wind from the west, fish bite the best; wind from the north, few sailors set forth; wind from the south blows bait in their mouth.” And believe it or not, it’s mostly true.
While the wind direction doesn’t necessarily affect fishing conditions, the reason behind the wind direction does. Keep reading as we discuss how wind affects fishing in today’s blog post.
Does Wind Direction Affect Fishing?
Does wind direction affect fishing? As mentioned, the wind direction doesn’t necessarily dictate fishing conditions. However, the reason behind the wind direction does! Here’s a quick overview:
East Winds
East winds usually occur after a cold front, bringing high barometric pressure, cooler temperatures, and bluebird skies. Generally, fish don’t like the change in pressure, as it affects the air in their swim bladder. Many fish also dislike bright sunshine. These two features, in combination, make the fish less likely to bite during an east wind.
West Winds
Generally, west winds mean a storm is approaching. Fish can sense the changing conditions, prompting many of them to go on a feeding frenzy. And for that reason, many fishermen prefer to fish during west winds!
South Winds
South winds usually blow during warmer periods (in the spring and fall) and stable periods in the summer. Both of these are relatively ideal fishing conditions!
North Winds
North winds are also associated with cold fronts, which makes them unfavorable for fishing.
7 Tips for Fishing in Windy Conditions
Don’t let windy days deter your fishing adventures! Instead, follow these tips to make the most of windy fishing excursions:
1. Seek Shelter
While it might not be your usual spot, seeking shelter is a great way to meet the fish where they are. Look for places with wind-blocking features like rock walls or sheltered bays. You could also head inland to fish in shallower water or at estuaries.
2. Go Shallower
Wind will often prompt fish to feed closer to the surface. Therefore, bottom set-ups are rarely necessary. If you opt for one, note that the wind will likely push the bait and the fish into shallower waters.
3. Adjust Your Gear
Using a lighter line makes casting easier in windy conditions. And because you’re likely heading inland or seeking shelter (see above), a lighter line will help you capture those smaller fish. If you’re still fishing with bottom
bait, increase the weight on your jigheads. Because some lines tend to bow in windy conditions, losing contact with the lure is easier. However, heavier jigheads combat that.
4. Switch Up Your Routine
Stick to marinas and jetties on windier days instead of casting your line into choppy, shallow water. Cast close to pilings or beneath docked boats, as they offer plenty of shelter for the fish to feed. Additionally, steer clear of any exposed sandbars or open beaches.
5. Cast With The Wind
If you can, cast your rod on the same side of the boat from which the wind is coming. That way, you’ll get as much wind protection as you can.
6. Don’t Be Afraid to Anchor
As many experienced anglers know, boat control in windy conditions can sometimes be challenging. (And if you’re focused on keeping your rig stable, your fishing abilities usually fall to the back burner.) Therefore, anchoring is a great way to stabilize your rig in windy conditions.
7. And Don’t Be Afraid to Fish From the Shore
Finally, don’t be afraid to fish from the shore in windier conditions. If the wind is at your back, it’ll boost your casting distance. And if the wind isn’t working with your artificial lures, you can throw some live bait out on a sinker.
Best Lures to Use in Wind
If fishing with artificial lures, opt for something you can cast out and retrieve immediately. One of our personal favorites? The Johnson Silver Minnow Spoon. Not only does this wind cast well in windy conditions, but it actually cuts through wind blowing into your face.

Golden Marine Systems, in conjunction with Gorman Marine Construction, is making significant progress in the restoration of Salty Sam’s Marina in Fort Myers Beach, following the devastation caused by Hurricane Ian in September 2022. The hurricane’s destructive force left the marina in ruins, but Golden Marine Systems, known for its high-quality dock systems, has been instrumental in bringing the marina back to life.
Recently, Golden Marine Systems completed the installation of the new D-Dock, featuring their innovative 850 Series dock system. The dock is equipped with Endeck Ashwood decking, known for its durability and low maintenance. Grilled FL Swordfish with Mango Chutney
Ingredients
Grilled Florida Swordfish
2-3 (6-ounce) Florida swordfish steaks
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon all-purpose seasoning (your favorite)
1 tablespoon fresh herbs (such as parsley or thyme)
Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
Mango Chutney
2 Florida mangoes, diced small
1/2 cup Florida bell peppers, diced fine
2 tablespoons Florida Key lime juice
1 tablespoon Florida Orange Blossom honey
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1/3 cup onion, diced fine
1 tablespoon white vinegar
¼ cup sweet chili sauce
¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (or more, to taste)
½ teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
½ teaspoon curry powder
Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
Directions:
Prepare grill (gas or charcoal). Drizzle 1 tablespoon olive oil on swordfish and season with salt, pepper, fresh herbs, and all-purpose seasoning. Place fish on grill (or in grill pan) over direct heat and cook for 3-4 minutes (depending on thickness). Turnover and cook for additional 3 minutes or until cooked through. Remove from heat and set aside.
On hot grill or stove top, preheat small pan over medium heat. Add 1 ½ tablespoons olive oil and remaining chutney ingredients. Bring to boil, reduce heat to simmer and cook for 6-8 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside for 5 minutes. Spoon over swordfish and serve immediately.

Fall fishing is here
The mornings the last week or so have been a little cooler as the days get shorter and we get closer to fall here in Bradenton and Anna Maria Island.
The fishing in Tampa bay has been great and seems to get better by the day as we get into fall and the water temperatures cool. The official first day of fall this year is September 22nd.
Guests on our fishing charters lately have been experiencing good action with redfish, seatrout, and snook. This is the best time of year to target these fish and have the chance at catching an “inshore slam” which is landing all three species in the same day. All of these fish provide great table fare and all are in season which is also great about this time of year.

The inshore fishing in September and October can be some of the best of the year. The water is starting to cool and the days are getting shorter. The redfish get into spawning schools the next few months and roam the Tampa Bay grass flats in search of food. Snook are beginning to return to the grass flats at the mouth of the Manatee River after being out on the beaches of Anna Maria Island spawning during the summer.
There is plenty of bait around on the beaches and around the Sunshine Skyway fishing piers and the Spanish Mackerel and jack crevelle are gorging themselves on it making for great action for our guests aboard our fishing charters.
If you are up for the challenge, the inshore gag grouper is one of the hardest fighting fish that Tampa Bay
has to offer and also very tasty if you are lucky enough to land a legal sized 24+ inch fish. The season for gag grouper is very short this year only the first two weeks of September. They are still a fun fish to catch and release though as the water cools into the winter and these fish become very aggressive in water less than fifteen feet deep throughout the bay.
There is a lot of options to fish for the next few months and a great time to be out on the water in Bradenton and Anna Maria Island. This is the off season so there is little boat traffic and little traffic to get out to the beach! I encourage getting kids out fishing and provide a family friendly atmosphere.

Ready For Fall!
Summer is almost gone, and I can’t wait till fall! Summertime in South Florida used to mean great mahi fishing offshore. The past few years (5) that has not been the case. Last year was the absolute worst and this year was a close second. Whether its climate change, overfishing, etc. it has not been the reliable fishery it used to be. Last year the fishery got a little better later in the season (September and October), but I can honestly say that I will not be doing many, if any, mahi charters until I know the fish are out there. There is no worse feeling for a guide than going after a relatively easy target species and not being able to produce. You have to be upfront and honest with your clients and be able to switch to different fisheries if need be.
The one fishery that was good for us this summer was daytime swordfish. We were successful in all but 2 of our summer trips for daytime swords. The quality of the fish was good to with the largest at 398 pounds and quite a few swordfish between 150 to 225 pounds. This bodes well as we are just entering the prime season for daytime swordfish which is late September through January. Looking through my records October and November were the best months but December and January depending on weather can be very good as well.
Fall fishing is also the beginning of kite fishing for sailfish and the much-
anticipated high speed trolling for wahoo. The wahoo fishing is typically much better in the Bahamas and traditionally we did most of our trips for wahoo in Bimini. We will continue to target wahoo in Bimini, but we are also planning on a few trips to Great Harbour. This past summer was my first trip to Great Harbour, and we did phenomenal with the deep dropping there. Talking to others, the wahoo fishing there can be phenomenal there as well.
Sailfishing is our bread and butter here in South Florida and fall marks the beginning of it. We fish for them with kites and live baits, and I am so ready to go chase spindlebeaks again. It’s always a rush catching sailfish, but hooking multiples is when it really gets your blood going!
We have invested some time and money keeping the Double D and all our tackle in top notch condition. We recently put a wrap on the boat and just installed new Mercury outboards. About The Mullet Run
The mullet run is a seasonal migration of mullet fish along Florida’s coastlines, that transforms its waters into a flowing hub of activity. From September through November, millions of mullet travel south in search of warmer waters, creating a feeding frenzy for predators like Tarpon, multiple species of shark, Snook, Barracuda and Jack Crevalle. This migration offers an unparalleled opportunity for anglers to engage in thrilling sport fishing.
Fishing during the mullet run couldn’t be more exciting, watching bait get blasted by huge tarpon and snook right in front of you, big fish catching air as they fly up through the schools, it really is unbelievable. All the excitement and opportunity doesn’t come without its challenges. Place and time are just as important as technique and presentation. Fishing from shore requires patience and some stout gear. Fortunately, you won’t have to bring much with you, a cast net and a bucket, a roll of leader and a few circle hooks will get the job done.
FISHING FROM SHORE
When it’s mullet run season, from shore I use an 8ft heavy rod paired with an 8000 size reel spooled up with 25lb mono and a topshot of 40lb braid tied to

September has arrived, which also means snook season is open. Snook season brings out an abundance of amateur anglers. We do catch and release preserving the future of our snook population. The docks and sea walls are great areas to locate schools of snook. Bigger fish are hanging near drop offs and deeper passes. Live bait and Rapala skitter walks create explosive strikes.
The dirty water has the sharks thriving throughout the intercoastal. Sharks are feeding on schools of jacks and blue runners. Anglers are having a blast, as massive schools of jacks ambush bait schools, providing nonstop rod, bending action.
Fall begins and the mullet migration is starting to trickle into our local waters.
my 60lb leader. Hook a mullet in the top of his back in between the two dorsal fins. Using the right size hook for your bait is crucial, too big and he might not get bit, too small and the hook might not stick. Also try to hook as little of the bait as you can, you want the circle hook exposed as much as possible while still being able to cast your bait from the beach and not pulling through. Let your bait swim freely trying to merge in with the schools as they pass, keep your bail open with your finger on the line and once he gets picked up drop the line and let the fish eat for a couple seconds. Then close the bail, reel tight and hang on!
FISHING FROM A BOAT
Fishing on the boat during the mullet run is much different than from shore. We can step down our tackle a bit and jump from school to school looking for the ones that have the most predators on them. Keep your distance from the schools, there’s no reason to blast right through them with the boat
mullet tight together then blasting right through the middle of the school to eat and then return right to the outside again. I like to slow troll big mullet down the edge of the schools and let the tarpon come to me.
I use 7ft Medium Heavy Rods with 6000 sized reels spooled up with 20lb mono, tied to about 80yds of 30lb braid then to a long 6ft 50lb mono leader. The mono gives us the stretch we need when that fish jumps and the braid is there to give us that pulling power once we get the fish close to the boat. Keep in mind there is always a good amount of sharks around during the mullet run so it’s important to fight the tarpon hard and fast to insure a quick and healthy release. Hook your mullet in the top lip and get him about 40 – 50yds behind the boat, put out a second bait only 5 yds shorter than the other. Similar to fishing from shore, hold your rod with the bail open, finger on the line and when that bait gets blasted drop the line count to three, close the bail, reel tight and hang on!!

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. The inspection is a courtesy, so no action is taken if problems are found. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. SAFETY CHECKS AND SAFE BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutuallyconvenient time. FLORIDA BOATER’S ID CARD - Don’t forget that “Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 is required to either have successfully completed a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved boating education course or have passed a course equivalency or temporary certificate examination and have in their possession a boating education ID card and a photo identification card before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 HP or more in Florida.” Identification cards for persons completing the course or the equivalency exam are good for a lifetime. Boat America Classes:
The Clearwater Flotilla is also pleased to announce the schedule for Boat America classes in 2024. These classes provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of boating safety, navigation rules, and emergency procedures. SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license.
