Pioneering hybrid-electricfeatures

Sea Ray is expanding its next-generation SDX lineup with two new models. The dynamic SDX 250 and SDX 250 Surf blend quality, functionality and capability to provide limitless fun. Available in sterndrive and surf configurations, the vessels feature powerful propulsion, abundant storage, optimized seating and premium amenities to suit any aquatic activity. Whether entertaining or wakesurfing, the versatile SDX 250 is well-equipped with plenty of room for full days on the water with family and friends.
Offering capacity with capability, the SDX 250 models have a beam of 8’6” in a 25-ft. vessel. The wide and open layout featured on both models has been optimized for space and comfort with premium amenities for all-day enjoyment. Features include an enhanced cockpit with a sleek curved windshield for improved visibility, plush L-shaped bench seating, adjustable seating configurations, an integrated cooler compartment and USB outlets. The oversized helm seat and port companion seat have movable backrests that convert from forward-facing to aftfacing seats. The cockpit can be further enhanced with options like a table and inductive charging stations.
Boasting impressive performance and power, the SDX 250 is propelled by a standard 300-horsepower Mercury® MerCruiser® 6.2L MPI ECT engine with a Bravo Three® drive, SmartCraft technology and Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS) controls. Showcasing an innovative wakesurfing system, the SDX 250 Surf is powered by a standard 300-horsepower MerCruiser 6.2L MPI ECT engine with a forward-facing Bravo Four S® drive, contra-rotating props, SmartCraft technology and DTS. The forward-facing drive sets up the boat for wakesurfing and improves maneuverability when docking or traveling at low speeds.
The SDX 250 Surf is outfitted with Sea Ray’s intuitive NextWave™ surf system that generates repeatable, rideable waves for wakesurfing and other thrilling watersports. The
vessel’s transom is engineered to produce a clean wave with plenty of push while electric surf tabs, Active Trim and three ballast tanks featuring 1,550 lbs. of ballast control the height of the wave and produce a long or short pocket. Taking the guesswork out of configurating settings, the boat is equipped with a Sea Ray custom surf interface powered by Mercury Smart Tow® presenting three pre-set modes for surfing, wakeboarding and skiing/tubing. Also, boaters can use the visual display to adjust the settings with the touch of a button to accommodate riders’ preferences and skill levels.
The electric-folding watersports tower, standard on the surf variation and optional on the sterndrive variation, provides passengers seated in the cockpit protection from the sun and inclement weather. The tower features an integrated Bimini top and tow points to pull wakesurfers or wakeboarders. For easy storage, the tower can be lowered or raised, and optional tower speakers and board racks can be added. Side tow points and surf knobs are included on the SDX 250 Surf tower providing improved line management for wakesurfers by keeping them out of the wake and away from propeller wash.
The helm is equipped with a Digital Dash offering a standard 9” Simrad® NSX® touchscreen display (dual 9” NSX displays are standard on the surf variation) featuring a chartplotter with preloaded charts and Mercury Marine® SmartCraft® Connect for simplified engine monitoring. Other highlights include Active Trim control and monitoring and an optional inductive charging station.
Convenient storage areas have been incorporated from bow to stern to keep items secure and out of the way. An in-floor compartment in the transom walkway is equipped with drainage to stow wet gear, and multiple storage spaces under the cockpit bench seating can be used to stash boards and bulky items. Roasted Lemon and Herb Florida Snapper
Ingredients:
• 1 3- to 4-pound whole Florida snapper, cleaned and head removed
• 1 1 cup Florida cherry tomatoes
• 1 1 tablespoon Florida seafood seasoning blend
• 1 1 tablespoon fresh herbs (parsley, rosemary, thyme), chopped fine
• 1 1 tablespoon cooking oil
• 1 2 lemons (1 halved, 1 juiced)
• 1 Whole parsley, rosemary and/or thyme for garnish
Preparation:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Preheat an oven-safe sauté pan over medium-high heat. On a clean cutting board, make several crosshatch slices into the thickest part of the fish all the way to the bone. Use most of the seasoning blend to season the outside of the fish making sure to get the spice mixture into the fresh cuts. Add cooking oil to the preheated sauté pan and carefully place the fish top side down. Cook the fish for 2 to 3 minutes until a light crispy crust is formed.
Carefully flip the fish over, add the lemon halves cut side-down in the pan. Place in preheated oven and roast for 15 to 20 minutes or until cooked throughout.
Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the fish and garnish with fresh herbs and cherry tomatoes. Serve with Florida arugula pesto, if desired.

Aspiring anglers can learn, practice skills, go fishing and win prizes at the award-winning “Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing!®” Keys University and Fishing Fever Tournament, Oct. 18-20 in the Sport Fishing Capital of the World. Hosted by the nonprofit Ladies Let’s Go Fishing Foundation, the “No-Yelling School of Fishing” offers classroom presentations, two networking events, hands-on skill practice, optional charter boat fishing and the friendly Fishing Fever Tournament. Classes will be held at the waterfront Elks Lodge in Tavernier FL. No equipment or experience is necessary.
Optional offshore or inshore charter fishing out of Islamorada, FL is offered on Friday and Sunday with prizes awarded for the LLGF Fishing Fever tournament. Participants can also fish from their own boats.
Activities launch Friday evening with a networking social and fundraiser 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Saturday morning indoor presentations begin at 9 am, covering Offshore, Inshore and Bottom Fishing, plus Fishing Basics and Conservation. Speakers include Captains Lee Lavery, Jeanne Towne, Rob Modys, podcaster, fishing book author and fishing guide and Betty Bauman. Setting this program apart from typical fishing classes are the hands-on fishing activities taught by several guides for releasing, knot tying, dehooking, bait rigging, spin casting, cast netting and more until 4:30 pm. A second
networking party will be held afterwards at Seaside Glassworks.
182 fish were caught at the 2023 Fishing Fever event, including mahi, tuna, snapper, grouper, snook, tarpon, redfish, trout and amberjack up to 46 lbs.

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630)674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART
Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. Trained and certified examiners will be available throughout the year to conduct complimentary VSCs for local boaters. These checks cover a variety of safety aspects, including life jackets, navigation lights, fire extinguishers, and other essential equipment. By participating in a VSC, boaters can ensure that their vessels meet all required safety standards, fostering a safer maritime environment for all.
Boat America Classes:
The Clearwater Flotilla is also pleased to announce the schedule for Boat America classes in 2024. These classes provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of boating safety, navigation rules, and emergency procedures. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. Trolling the canals for Backyard Groupers - October is the start for some inshore fun fishing as gag groupers move into the canals on the west coast andinside of Tampa Bay. Change in weather opens up the door to different types of fishing. October is my let’s do something different month and I spend at least part of my charter or my fun fishing day trying to catch gag grouper by trolling in the canals from lower Tampa Bay to Clearwater Beach. First-incoming tide is best, and you need to troll the canals that hold at least 5 feet or more of water at low tide. Second, study your area first as not all canals hold fish. Find the ones that have structure, builder’s dump rocks and left over concrete rubble around the docks as protection against erosion. Over the years these structurers become artificial reefs or feeding stations for all species, attracting small bait fish, crabs and shrimp. This also makes a great stopping ground for grouper during the fall and winter months.
There are many manufacturers of great trolling lures for grouper. We all have our preference, andmine happens
to be Mann’s stretch 15 Plus. This lure works best between 6 to 15 feet of water, perfect for trolling docks. The speed you troll depends on the depth of water, hull design and size of engine. When trolling it’s best to go by RPM than speed. When you get your first strike make a mental note of your RPM and stick with it, since a change in tide movement or wind could affect your speed and you might need to change your RPM accordingly.
Try keeping the lure as close as possible to the outside edges of the docks, and watch the tip of your rod because you will want the lure to bump the bottom once in a while and this tells you you’re on target. I always troll with two rods and each one has a different color lure, some days blue works and others they only touch green back ones, so my recommendation is always carry 4 or 5 different colors and fish them until you find the one that works for the day.
Somedays are better than others and the water temperature has a lot to do with the bite. The cooler the water temperature the better the bite. Work an area more than once, sometimes Mr. Gag just didn’t get there in time for a meal and your second run through gives him a chance and you a second shot of landing a prize catch.

The hunt for reds in October is on the way. Barring any outbreaks of red tide that could push fish away from the bloom, schools of giant redfish pushing measuring tapes beyond the 40-inch range will be showing up over the next few months to spawn and mingle with smaller inshore redfish. These big breeders typically live in Gulf waters and move into our estuary here in Tampa Bay and along the coast in the fall months to feed on schooling mullet and whatever forage gets in their way. This heavy feeding activity is the precursor to the annual fall spawning season.
Mullet will begin schooling in the fall in preparation for spawning in the Gulf. Usually, this is triggered by a cold front pushing these fish out of the passes into the Gulf where they spawn. But before the front, mullet milling around the shallows while feeding will kick up small baitfish, crabs, and shrimp out of the seagrass. Redfish will follow close behind to feed on this forage, and the big hungry reds will pick out a mullet. It’s difficult to catch redfish on topwater lures because their mouths
are situated under their chins, making surface feeding difficult and hook-ups even tougher. If I had to choose a topwater lure it would be an old favorite from MirrOlure, the 94MR18 or 21 Top Dog. But in the last couple of years, this company produced an award-winning new topwater lure called the Duke Dog, another walk-the-dog style lure, that won best saltwater hard bait in the 2023 ICAST trade show. This lure has a smaller profile that is easier for reds to get in their mouths and has accounted for hundreds of fish for me over the past year. Snook, trout, redfish, bluefish, Spanish Mackerel, cobia, and numerous other species have been caught on these lures.
In October, area waters will begin cooling down into the 70s, attracting schools of Spanish mackerel and migrating kingfish from the Panhandle. Look for circling or diving birds feeding on bait schools. Spanish mackerel will rip through the bait schools slashing these pilchards, threadfins, and glass minnows. Birds will settle for the wounded baitfish missed by the mack attack. Putting numbers of mackerel in the cooler is simple. They love flashy spoons or jigs that
of flounder, redfish, trout and some pretty big snook while trolling for gags. The best part is that you can start trolling early, catch your fish and be back at the dock in time for the football game.

move quickly through the water. The liberal limit of 15 fish per harvester per day with a 12-inch minimum length measured from the tip of the nose to the fork of the tail makes for some great fish for the smoker.
In mid-October stone crab traps will be placed by commercial and recreational anglers, making these small traps, lines, and buoy markers like mini-artificial reefs. The longer they are in the water the more marine growth accumulates on them, attracting tripletail. Making a day of hopping from trap to trap with a DOA Shrimp or live shrimp can make for some very tasty tripletail as your reward. Two fish per angler per day with a minimum of 18 inches in length will make for a terrific dinner.
Snook season is still open, pompano will begin showing up in better numbers, and flounder remain open until the seasonal closure from October 15 through November 30, giving anglers plenty of options for some great fall fishing. ‘Til then…I’ll catch ya later!

Palm Beach and Jupiter inshore report September was a wild month! As the month comes to an end, the local waterways have been a roller coaster, calm water, rough water, dirty water lots of bait no bait. Every day is a new mission.
Always a highly targeted species tarpon. Number one fan favorite! The tarpon have been very active during low light hours, early morning and evenings. Tarpon are crashing schools near channels and structures. Live bait, Rapala skitter walks and Doa bait busters great baits to enice tarpon. Tarpon can be seen rolling on the surface, this is always fun. It makes it easy for anglers to pinpoint location of the silver king.
Snook! They are on the move beaches, deep passes, and the intercoastal waterways are thriving with snook. The mullet run migration has triggered an explosive feeding at times, lowlight hours typically are the best times when fish are active. Snook fishing is great around seawalls, docks and bridges this past week. Mullet schools are migrating using these areas to hide Moving water is the key though, throughout the day, incoming and
outgoing tide trigger bait schools to migrate as snook ambush these pods creating feeding frenzies. Live Mullet, freelined, Rapala skitter walks, Doa bait busters and Doa 4” jerk baits, all great baits to get the strike. Tarpon junkies! Yes, we are. That’s always our main target, the silver kings have been very active whether you’re targeting beaches, deep passes, docks and shorelines, these fish are active and ready to eat. Live mullet freelined with tide or Rapala skitter walks and Doa terror eyz will get the drag screaming.
When not targeting snook and tarpon anglers like to tango with the hard pulling jack crevalle. These fish like to school up creating nonstop action for anglers. Mixed in with the jacks and are catching bluefish, ladyfish, snapper and sharks. With the mullet migration happening, there are so many species that are taking advantage of

We are into our fall season and there are subtle changes that we are already noticing. Weather is just a tad bit cooler in the morning, it is getting darker earlier, and the sun is rising later each morning. These changes are subtle to us, but it really gets the baitfish and the predators going. We have noticed a lot more bait on the beach including pilchards, threadfin herring and sardines. More bait means more predators. I haven’t seen the mullet pushing south yet but that should happen any day now.
Soon we will be in the thick of sailfish season, but we are already seeing sailfish almost daily. There is a big abundance of bonitos around. With the bonitos we should be seeing a push of wahoo, sailfish and bigger kingfish. Bonitos are a perfect morsel for those predators. We have also seen a lot more ballyhoos on the beach and in 20 to 40 ft range. The same thing happened last year, and we started seeing big mahis feeding on those ballyhoos. You usually associate mahis with deep Gulfstream water but when the ballyhoos are thick on the reef, these
mahis move in. It’s quite the sight to see a ballyhoo shower and then see a bunch of big mahis in the shallow water chasing them. Sailfish also love ballyhoo, and they also go in and feed in the ballyhoo schools.
Farther offshore we have seen very steady action with daytime swordfishing. We have been lucky enough and have caught a swordfish on all our recent daytime sword trips. Typically, the fall is a great time for swordfish and October and November are two of my favorite months to target these fish.

Another fishery that starts to peak in the fall is the high-speed wahoo fishing in the Bahamas. I have always done well in late September and October with wahoo in Bimini. This past full moon, many of the boats that went over did well catching a half dozen wahoos per day. Wahoo fishing is quite the thrill.
There is no other sound that rivals the sound of a reel when the lure gets eaten by a wahoo while trolling at 15knots. The reel starts to scream and you literally think the reel is going to explode. You better make sure all your terminal tackle and tackle are in order because if they are not, tackle failure will certainly occur. I really hope to do quite a few wahoo trips this fall and winter.

There are still mahis in the Gulfstream and if conditions are right September can be an excellent month for that. In September we also start kite fishing again targeting sailfish, mahis, kingfish tunas etc.
