The 6 Best Fall Boating Activities for Families
Before you say it’s too cold, keep a few things in mind. For starters, it’s only mildly chilly. (The temperature will drop way more come wintertime!) So, you just need to reimagine what boat days look like when the air is a bit more crisp.
Even if you can’t swim all day, you can still enjoy family boating activities in autumn! Keep scrolling to see our top choices.
1. Sterngating (Boatgating or Sailgating)
Fall boating activities offer a range of fun options, and sterngating is a standout favorite.
Boatgating is the boat version of tailgating – and it’s a blast! You’re missing out if you haven’t tried this boat-based twist on watching sports.
A classic day for our families usually includes cruising the waters and watching a game on television or outside the stadium! Some waterfront stadiums provide boatgating experiences during games, allowing you to enjoy the game while on the water.
2. Fishing
When it comes to fall boating activities, few can match the appeal of a family fishing trip. Fishing is one of the best family activities this time of year because it teaches kids important lessons about life.
When children or young adults go fishing, they learn patience
while waiting for the fish to bite. Additionally, they learn responsibility through managing the equipment – but also confidence! The sense of accomplishment is real when they reel in that first catch!
3. Sightseeing (Or Leaf Peeping!)

What is the most crucial safety tip to follow when camping with your family in the fall? Watching kids carefully when they’re near the water! You’ll also need to ensure you have life jackets and all necessary safety gear.
5. Grilling Out or Picnicking
Let’s face it – food brings people together. Cooking meals on your boat for your loved ones is a fall boating activity for families that is often overlooked.

DECKEE mobile app aims to help increase life jacket wear rates
ANNAPOLIS, Md., Oct. 3, 2024 – The nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water and the National Safe Boating Council, which provides national boating safety outreach, have teamed up with boating app provider DECKEE to make it easier to find and borrow child- or adult-sized life jackets for temporary use, such as for a day or weekend, with the goal of increasing life jacket wear and boating safety.
This pilot program has integrated the BoatUS Foundation’s more than 600 life jacket loaner sites across the nation into the simple-to-use DECKEE app, allowing boaters to find their closest BoatUS Foundation loaner site on a map – highlighted by the BoatUS logo – or be notified when they are near a BoatUS Foundation Life Jacket Loaner location.
“It’s a great way to find a life jacket loaner if you have unexpected guests aboard,” said BoatUS Foundation program manager Alan Dennison. The Foundation’s loaner database includes more than 600 free kids’ Life Jacket Loaner Program sites at marinas, boat clubs, campgrounds, marinas, firehouses and TowBoatUS companies. “We really want to make it easier for families
to get the right size life jackets, whether infant, child, teen or adult,” he added. The program loans out more than 140,000 life jackets annually.
Said Peg Phillips, executive director of the National Safe Boating Council: “The pilot app project with DECKEE and the BoatUS Foundation will help give us an accurate and scalable way to measure the influence of ongoing outreach programs. For example, a notification that comes as a gentle reminder of a nearby life jacket loaner site may reinforce or prompt increased life jacket wear by kids and adults.”
In 2023, statistics show 75% of fatal boating accident victims drowned (where the cause of death was known). Of those, 87% were not wearing a life jacket.

Florida Sweet Pepper, Shrimp and Corn Bisque
Ingredients:
• 1 pound medium or small Florida shrimp, peeled, deveined, and chopped into bite-sized chunks
• 4 ears Florida sweet corn, kernels cut off the cob (about 2 cups)
• 1 cup Florida sweet peppers, diced small
• 1 cup Florida celery, diced small
• 1 cup onion, diced small
• 1 teaspoon seafood seasoning blend (your favorite)
• 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
• 1 teaspoon Cajun or blackening seasoning
• 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
• 1 tablespoon fresh garlic, minced
• 4 cups half-and-half
• 4 cups shrimp or seafood broth
• 1 teaspoon tomato paste
• Chives or fresh herbs for garnish
• Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
Directions:
Preheat a large soup pot over medium-high heat. Add butter to the pot.
Carefully add onion, peppers, celery and corn.
Cook the vegetables for 4 minutes until some color and caramelization begin.
Add fresh garlic and stir. Slowly add flour and whisk until incorporated.
Add seafood broth and half-and-half.
Turn heat down to medium and continue to stir.
Add tomato paste and seasoning blends, then mix well.
Bring to a gentle simmer to continue to thicken.
Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
Add the shrimp and continue to simmer for about 4 more minutes.
Serve hot with a garnish of chopped chives or fresh herbs.
Fresh tip: for a dairy-free version eliminate the half-and-half and add more stock

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630)674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. The inspection is a courtesy, so no action is taken if problems are found. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. Post Hurricane Fishing Expectations
Before the hurricanes hit the Gulf, the fishing along the Nature Coast was exceptionally good. Inshore and fly anglers had been enjoying some super fun action from a late-season run of juvenile tarpon. Juvenile tarpon, typically weighing 10-25 pounds, are incredibly acrobatic fighters when hooked making them a blast to target on fly and light tackle.
Early mornings had been Prime Time for targeting these fish as they often keyed in on surface shadows while stalking prey from depths ranging from 4-6ft of water. The kryptonite for these late season tarpon had been small chartreuse flies tied sparsely or shiny twitch bait lures in the 3-4” range. With the Gulf’s abundance of food, tarpon anglers were looking for more of a reaction strike than a finesse bite. Fast, erratic retrieves with lures and quick strips with
flies had been key to triggering strikes from these hungry fish.
So the million dollar question right now is what’s going to happen to the fishing now that these hurricanes have departed the Gulf? Well this is what we know: Water temperatures will plummet. Migratory fish will flee away from the impacted areas of these storms. Water clarity will take time reach its pristine state.
The Good news is we were way over due for a cool down in water temperatures. The Bad news is our local flats and backcountry marshes are usually always crystal clear this time of year.
Long story short anglers are going to have to be open to targeting species such as Redfish, Snook and Speckled Trout on the blind. Casting search baits such as jigs, topwater lures, and jerkbaits are going to find great success when targeting fish on the blind.

Inshore Fishing Report
Snook action has been hot, especially around the passes. The best time to target these fish is during the night and early morning hours. After sunrise, the beaches and flats come alive with Snook chasing live bait like greenbacks, threadfins, and shrimp. At night, flair hawks and soft plastics are highly effective around the passes.
Redfish are biting well along mangrove shorelines, oyster bars, and local flats. Look for signs of mullet schools or bird activity in the upper and back bay areas. They are most active in the mornings before the heat sets in. At night, target them around dock lights by working the bottom, and during higher tides, soaking dead baits along the mangroves is a great tactic.
Trout are plentiful around deeper flats, potholes, and edges. They’re biting well on soft plastics, white bait, and shrimp. With a slight dip in water temperatures, they’ve become more active, providing excellent fishing opportunities. Dock lights at night are especially productive, and the upcoming new moon should make the
bite even better.
Tarpon action is expected to heat up this weekend with the new moon bringing stronger tidal flows. Focus on passes and bridges in the early mornings for your best shot at hooking these powerful fish.
Mangrove snapper are active inshore, especially near structures and deeper channels. Live shrimp and cut threadfins are great bait options, with light tackle and minimal weights working well in the back and upper bay areas. Chumming is also effective in shallower waters, especially during slack tide.
We’re seeing big sharks caught around the passes, with local anglers landing seven, eight, and nine-foot bull sharks from the passes to the beaches near the bridge. Now is a great time to target these big sharks.

Near shore, we’re seeing positive signs as the hogfish are starting to put on weight. While the bite isn’t in full swing just yet, we’re

entire conundrum is that there are going to be plenty of days on the water where anglers are going to come across unexpected catches.
Tripletail, Cobia, Permit, Pompano, and larger Tarpon are going to surprise visiting anglers making for some interesting days out on the water.

This makes our halfday trips even more exciting, as there’s a good chance to catch plenty of mackerel, and maybe even a kingfish. Offshore, we’re focused on amberjack season, which runs until the end of October. Along with amberjack, we’re landing triggerfish, big mangrove snapper, yellowtail snapper, vermilion snapper, alamaco jacks, and porgies. There’s a ton of action, and light loads on our trips make this a great time to join us.

Fall Lake Toho Fishing Report
The bass fishing on Orlando’s Lake Toho this fall remains excellent. While the lake is filling up with hydrilla and peppergrass, the remaining areas are loaded with bass. Once you get in one of the areas that are still fishable 20-30 fish days are still the average on our charters. And if you’re looking for a big one, this is a great time. As temps begin to cool down we’re getting 7+ pound bass more and more frequently.
Finding large holes in the grass is the key. There’s a lot of hydrilla and peppergrass on the lake, more than I’ve ever seen. It’s at least at 70% coverage right now. While the state does have plans to spray and kill off parts of it in the near future, there’s still open areas right now that are leading to some productive fishing days.
Once you find one of these open areas, a whole range of lures can be used to catch them and it just depends on the weather that day what will work the best. Early topwater has been working, with jerkbaits and rattletraps working if they’re schooling in the open. Around the thicker hydrilla, speedworms, spinnerbaits, and chatterbaits have been productive. And of course if all else fails, flukes have been working throughout all the areas and conditions. But the best bet of all for getting both the big ones and the most numbers has been on large golden wild shiners.

It’s been a while since I updated my report page. Fishing has been good even though we have had a couple serious hurricanes skirt Miami and the Keys. I fished the Take stock in children and the FNLGA tour the first week in October. The water in Fl. Bay had a pretty bad Algae Bloom that along with some serious storms made it interesting.
There was a good bite but you had to run around and find clean water. I did on Saturday and my anglers did great, Top angler and second. I also had the top guide. We actually fished these 2 tournaments simultaneously which cost us time having to go to a awards that we won. It hurt us because of the rainstorms on Sunday. It was a fun weekend with the Biscayne Rod and NLBN team.
This week Hurricane Milton’s outer bands kept the wind up to 60
mph in South Florida, that and some rain kept us off the water until yesterday. I couldn’t take it anymore and went out into everglades Bass fishing with my son. The rain found us again, but we caught Bass, Peacocks and Gar.
