What is a Gunwale on a Boat?
Experienced captions typically know their boat like the back of their hand, understanding every detail as if it were second nature. And this knowledge isn’t just for showing off – it’s key for boat maintenance and safety!
One often overlooked (yet essential) part of a boat is the gunwale. But what is a gunwale, and why is it important? This post will explore everything you should know about this critical structural element.
What Is a Gunwale?
A gunwale (gunnel) is simple – but essential. Location-wise, it’s on the top edge of your boat’s hull. Think of it like the outermost part where the deck meets the boat’s side, resulting in a flat surface.
Now, why are gunwales essential? They serve a couple of purposes. First off, many folks think of them as the perfect spot to hold fishing rods. But that’s not all they’re good for! Since the gunwale forms the sturdy upper edge of your boat, it also acts as a walkway for people getting on and off. Additionally, the gunwale is something for boaters to hold on to if the waters get a bit rocky. Think of it like a protective railing or buffer that has many uses.
Where Does the Term “Gunwale” Come From?
Essentially, the word “gunwale” comes from two older words. It’s “gun” plus “wale,” which used to mean “plank.” People started using this word way back in the 15th century. Back then, ships had these platforms on their decks where they’d put their guns or canons. And that’s what sailors called the gunwale!
Maintenance Tips for Boat Gunwales
In a way, your boat’s gunwale provides security to the entire hull and vessel. So, just like any other part of your boat, you’ll need to care for these parts to maintain stability.
Clean them frequently using boat soap and water. Also, check for cracks often to stop water from getting in. (If you see any chips, fill them right away.)

Okay, so now you know how important the gunwale is. But how do you stay safe around it? Well, first off, don’t sit on it when the boat’s moving. Because they’re not technical seats, passengers could easily fall off in choppy waters.
That being said, you should also be careful walking on them, as they might be wet or slippery.

As mentioned, some boaters add non-slip traction to their boat gunwale to limit people losing their footing when walking across. However, there’s much more you can do to personalize them!

Clam Linguini with Tomato, Basil, Lemon and Cortez Bottarga
Ingredients
20 live Florida clams, rinsed
3 teaspoons olive oil
2 large Florida tomatoes, diced
4 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped small
1 cup vegetable broth
2 tablespoons panko breadcrumbs, toasted
1/2 teaspoon lemon zest, chopped fine
1 tablespoon Parmesan cheese, grated
1 pound linguini pasta, cooked (8 ounces raw pasta = 1 pound cooked)
1/2 lemon, juiced
1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
2 heaping tablespoons Cortez Bottarga, shaved (or more to taste)
Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
Directions:
Preheat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the preheated pan. Carefully add the diced tomatoes and garlic to the pan. Cook tomatoes and garlic for 2 minutes. Season the tomatoes lightly with salt and pepper. Add the vegetable broth and whole clams to the tomato mixture. While the clams are cooking, combine the toasted panko breadcrumbs, lemon zest, Parmesan cheese and 2 tablespoons of olive oil into a small mixing bowl. Stir bread crumb mixture to combine. Cook the clams until they start to open, adding the cooked pasta to the pan when the clams are ready. Lightly toss ingredients to combine. Add lemon juice and the basil to the clam pasta. Taste sauce and adjust seasoning lightly with salt and pepper. The clams should all be open and ready to serve; discard unopened clams. To serve, place an even amount of pasta in each bowl. Nestle the clams around the pasta. Pour the remaining tomato sauce over the pasta. Drizzle the breadcrumb mixture over the clams and garnish with the Cortez Bottarga.

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630)674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. Tricks of the Trade
A good angler is like a magician who can pull tricks out of the bag to help him catch more fish. It could be just a simple item to save time, a technique that gets the fish to bite. We have all some tricks to help us catch more fish and I am going to share some of them with you.
These 5 basic tricks can help you catch more fish and save time and money.
1A. Noodles used for kids in the swimming pool cut into different lengths make excellent leader holders, especially during the mackerel and king fish season allowing you to have 12 pre-rigged leaders ready to go. Use one color for mackerel and another color for kingfish. You make the leaders at home while watching TV instead of commercials.
2A. During the fall when the trout bite goes crazy, my favorite way of catching them is using a Four Horsemen float only because it has 2 sound producing beads and a weight that increase my cast during windy days and the beads create the sound of a wounded bait. The clarity of the water dictates the size of my leader anywhere from 15 to 30-pound
fluorocarbon. I work the float with a popping action to draw attention to my bait and the float. Over the years I noticed that my float had chunks missing from the trout attacking the float like a top water bait so I put a small split ring where the swivel meets the float wire and added a 2/0 hook, and I started catching 2 trout at a time. This method can be used with live bait or as the picture shows, artificial bait.
3A. One basic problem over the years was keeping the soft baits on the hook after a few hits so here is a simple problem solver. After the head of the bait starts to break just cut it back a little and stick the tip of a toothpick through the bait and the eye of the hook. This keeps your artificial baits from sliding off.
4A. When fishing winter tides in shallow grassy areas you need to work just above the grass line. So, take one of your top water plugs, remove the rear hook and put a short leader, the length depending on the depth of water. I have mine set at about inches and tie a mid running fly. The action of the plug draws attention, and the tailing fly becomes the easy prey for the fish to hit. In

Hurricane Helene wrecked catastrophic damage to many areas of the SE United States. SW Florida had some flooding and damage but nothing like areas north of Naples.
The seas were extremely rough during the hurricane with waves washing over the beach dunes dumping water and sand on streets flooding neighborhoods and houses.
The water has since cleared up, the bait has shown up and the fishing is great, or was yesterday.
Yesterday I fished a long time client and friend Eric S. from IN and we had a stellar morning. First two stops we didn’t catch a fish then the third spot the snook were fired up. In fact they were so hungry and prevalent all we had to do was drop a bait over the side of the boat and we’d catch one and the water was only 3-4’ deep. Actually it got boring and we left to find different species. In addition we caught redfish, speckled sea trout and snapper.
Going forward November is typically a great time of year to fish. The weather and water starts to cool. Bait fish will be thick along the beaches and the near shore waters and predator fish will be feeding
fattening themselves up for winter.
Bonita (false albacore) will show up. Tarpon should also show on their fall southern migration along the beaches and passes. Snook, redfish, spanish mackerel, snapper pompano and trout will all be available.

5A. Fall and winter fishing for sheepshead, mangrove snapper and flounder in deep water can be fun and very productive. I found a trick to get them to bite when all else fails,and I fish this method all winter long. A simple soft glow bead is placed between the eye of the hook and the lead, and for some reason the glow of the bead seems to draw attention to the bait and my sheepshead, snapper and flounder bite has tripled over the last few years. The one question I ask myself is if it’s the bead that gets them to bite or my luck has increased. Either way it works for me.
Forecast: It depends on the weather if the water temperatures drop below 68 degrees start looking for the bigger sheepshead coming in from the Gulf they will work their way to ledges and bridges. Big trout can be found on the edges of channels or deep holes and great time to use artificial baits like Saltwater Assassin P & V with ¼ oz jig head. Redfish should be at their peak around creek mouths and oyster bars.

VERO BEACH FALL BOAT SHOW - CANCELLED – As many of you may know, the recent tornadoes associated with Hurricane Milton did a fair amount of damage in Vero Beach. Specifically the Central Beach area where we hold the Vero Beach Boat Show. As a result of the recovery effort, we were made aware that the City Of Vero Beach will be using Riverside Park as a staging area for debris disposal. They don’t anticipate the field being usable again until sometime late in the year and have cancelled all events in the Park through November. We researched an alternative site but as it stands, we are not going to be able to put on the Fall Vero Beach Boat Show scheduled for November 23rd and 24th, 2024. We are sorry to have to cancel what has always been a great local show for all that participate and attend. But….we have secured dates in the park for April 12th and 13th, 2025 and look forward to you all joining us for the Vero Beach Spring Boat Show!

Fall Lake Toho Fishing Report
The bass fishing on Orlando’s Lake Toho this fall remains excellent. While the lake is filling up with hydrilla and peppergrass, the remaining areas are loaded with bass. Once you get in one of the areas that are still fishable 20-30 fish days are still the average on our charters. And if you’re looking for a big one, this is a great time. As temps begin to cool down we’re getting 7+ pound bass more and more frequently.
Finding large holes in the grass is the key. There’s a lot of hydrilla and peppergrass on the lake, more than I’ve ever seen. It’s at least at 70% coverage right now. While the state does have plans to spray and kill off parts of it in the near future, there’s still open areas right now that are leading to some productive fishing days.
Once you find one of these open areas, a whole range of lures can be used to catch them and it just depends on the weather that day what will work the best. Early topwater has been working, with jerkbaits and rattletraps working if they’re schooling in the open. Around the thicker hydrilla, speedworms, spinnerbaits, and chatterbaits have been productive. And of course if all else fails, flukes have been working throughout all the areas and conditions. But the best bet of all for getting both the big ones and the most numbers has been on large golden wild shiners.

October is winding down! Moderate Northeast winds prevail in our local area, choppy conditions throughout the intercoastal. The winds have driven massive schools of mullet migrating south. Cooler temperatures at night have helped bring water temperatures down, fish are active.
Tarpon fishing is always challenging, weather conditions drive them in and out of areas quickly. With the rough seas, we’ve had offshore, water conditions are dirty around local inlets. The key to successful, tarpon, catching, find clean water and free line, finger mullet, in their vicinity. The tarpon, our schooling up in bays and canals. Anglers are having, great fun wrangling tarpon in the 10 to 50 pound class range.
Snook fishing has been decent, the higher than normal high tides we’ve had, push the snook back into areas or anglers can’t access. The falling tide has been the best time to target the line siders. Finger mullet free line along docks, sea walls and channels, areas that produce fish. As water temperatures cool, the snook will start migrating back to areas with muddy bottom.
