NNAPOLIS, Md., June 15, 2021 – Boat owners wishing to do good or take advantage of potential tax benefits may consider donating their boats to charity. Often this decision is made at the end of year just before the start of the new tax season. Waiting until the end of the year, however, could shortchange a boater’s potential tax benefits, according to the nonprofit BoatUS Foundation and Boating Safety and Clean Water, which has decades of experience operating a successful boat donation program. How can waiting to donate a boat until the end of the year potentially hurt you? Most charities will sell your donated boat so they can receive the proceeds to fund operations and programs while you receive a federal tax benefit. However, the Internal Revenue Service bases the value of the charitable deduction on the actual selling price of the donated boat. This means both your and the charity’s interests are aligned − the higher the price received on the sale of the boat, the more you stand to gain in tax benefits in the form of tax deduction. “Notwithstanding the pandemic, more boats are sold now than at any time of the year,” said BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water President Chris Edmonston, “With demand at the greatest, boaters are likely to have the best opportunity for maximum donation value.”
Another reason why waiting until the end of the year may not be the best time to donate your boat is that the vessel may not sell until the following year, delaying potential tax benefits. Unlike many charities that accept boats, the BoatU.S. Foundation also actively uses many donated boats for training purposes, such as teaching new boaters how to operate a boat. In some cases, donated vessels − typically single engine center-console types − are needed for Foundation on-water training programs. With these boats, the donor may use the surveyed value at the time of donation for tax purposes, and the write-off may be taken immediately. Also, unlike other boat donation opportunities, the Foundation’s program uses a partner broker to advertise the boat to help realize its highest value. The nonprofit also ensures that the donation process is hassle-free, from picking up the boat to handling the paperwork. If you would like to tell the Foundation a little more about a gently used boat you may be considering donating, go to BoatUS.org/Donate/Boat-Donation. Grouper Mediterranean Ingredients 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 (6-ounce) grouper fillets 1 onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 cup toasted chopped almonds 1/2 cup dry white wine 1/3 cup clam juice or chicken stock 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon thyme, chopped 1 teaspoon marjoram, chopped ground black pepper 3 tablespoons cilantro, chopped Directions: 1. In a heavy nonstick sauté pan, heat oil over high heat. 2. Sauté fillets 3 to 5 minutes until browned. 3. Transfer fillets to a platter; set aside. 4. Reduce heat to medium; sauté onion and garlic 4 to 5 minutes until onion is tender. 5. Add nuts, wine, stock, lemon juice, thyme, marjoram and pepper to taste; bring to a boil, stirring frequently. 6. Reduce heat to low. 7. Cover skillet and simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. 8. U.S. Sailing Programs offer instruction in small and large sailboats, windsurfers, and powerboats. All levels of instruction are available around the country for beginner to advanced skills. It includes a course book, a narrated student CD and a digital charting DVD. ABC 3 is available as a classroom, home study or online course. CLEARWATER COAST GUARD AUXILIARY TEACHING BOATING SAFETY CLASSES ONLINE - 2021 - A New Way to Learn … A New Crop of Safe Boaters. With the advent of COVID-19, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was advised to discontinue in-person classes for the safety of the instructors and students. The good news is that the State of Florida (FWC) and the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved the Coast Guard Auxiliary to conduct online classes. These classes are not your standard webinar sessions where the students sit at their computers and are lectured at. And they’re not animated cartoon sessions where you have to keep pressing enter to get to the next topic. The Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering outstanding “Boat America” course via two options: July 24 and 25 - Virtual Boat America 9am to 2pm; August 28 and 29 - Virtual Boat America 9am to 2pm. Classes are $40 per student and include the books, supplemental materials and course completion certificates. The classes being offered by the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary are conducted on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. In addition, because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! The boating safety class is also a requirement for many boaters in Florida. In the Sunshine State, anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, must successfully complete a boater safety course approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in order to operate any boat powered by more than 10 horsepower, and they are required to carry their boater education card with them when out on the water along with picture ID. Captain’sCorner with Captain Sergio Atanes Summer Fishing Tackle Tips August is one of the hottest months of the year, and therefore not my favorite month for fishing, but as a guide one must go when the phone rings. For those of you who do not make fishing your living, August would be the best time to do all those honey do’s you haven’t done and work on preparing your fishing tackle for September. Here are a few tips. • Give your reels a good cleaning by loosening the drags and lubricating the gears. If you do not feel comfortable doing this there are several good tackle dealers in Tampa who can service, your reels at a reasonable price. • Check your line guides on the rods for any scratches or nicks. Use cotton swabs or borrow a panty hose from your wife when she is not looking and cut it into small strips. It will last a long time, so do not worry, she will not miss one panty hose. Now run the cotton swab or piece of panty hose through the guide. If the panty hose clings or the cotton sticks to the guide, replace the guide or risk losing a fish later. A slight scratch or cut on the guide will cut your line under pressure from a pulling fish. (Figure A) • At the end of the day never put your hook on the guide, as this can and will scratch the guide. Instead, take an electrical nylon tie with
a screw hole built in and place it just above the top grip on the rod. This allows a place for the hook to sit. • Most anglers take too much tackle on a fishing trip. Remember the last time you went on a vacation with your wife, and she brought half the closet along? There are many new small soft sided tackle boxes that can handle all your needs. I suggest you leave most of your tackle at home and replenish your tackle box as needed. In addition, a small waterproof plastic divided tray with a lid works great for hooks and small sinkers to keep on the console of the boat and use a needed. (Figure B) Still have some extra time on your hands try this to take up your free time. If you still have time on your hands here are some hot weather tips to increase your catch. Fishing the flats start early and use cut mullet or ladyfish with a 3/0 Kahle hook, tied to a 30-pound fluorocarbon leaded. Put a #3 split shot about 5-inches from the hook just enough to help keep the bait on the bottom, try adding a 2-inch piece of Fishbites chunk shrimp flavored to keep plenty of scent around. (Figure C) September will bring lower water temperatures and an increase in fish activity. Look for snook cruising the mangrove shorelines; flounder will hit jigs tipped with shrimp
with Captain James Jackson It’s been one of the best years of fishing we’ve ever seen so far on Orlando’s Lake Toho. Never have I seen the lake as a whole fish so well. I mean there’s so many different areas you can catch fish in right now it’s crazy. Usually with our team of guides we have to fish around each other in certain areas to keep people on good fish, but with the lake being absolutely on fire like it is right now, we are all spread out through the lake fishing different spots and slaying them all the same! Lake Toho is definitely the lake to be on right now. 9 year old with a 7 pound orlando bassWhy is it bass fishing so well? Because of all of the submerged grass in the lake. The Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC) has changed their management plan for the lake the last few years and it has produced tremendous results. Instead of spraying and killing off the hydrilla in the lake routinely like they used to do, they are leaving much larger amounts of

it. The large amounts of hydrilla in the lake have led to increasing populations of bass. Each year the fishing has become better and better. With that being said much of the great fishing we are talking about can be found inKid with a 9 pound bass the large amounts of hydrilla and eel grass spread throughout the lake from the north end to the south. Staying on the edges of the thicker hydrilla has been the key, but submerged hydrilla under the water can hold hidden groups of fish. Large holes in the hydrilla have held good groups of fish also. The other pattern that’s going on right now is running water. With all the rain we’ve been getting since June all of the creeks running into the lake are flowing strong and have fish sitting in front of them. The locks that run out of the lake on the south end and the

West Central Florida Southwest Coast or Fishbites Chunks bounced on the bottom around sand patches in the grass flats. Mackerel action steps up a notch with water temperature starting to drop and redfish will move further out into the flats during high tide look for small crabs and shrimp. Mangrove snapper bite is starting to peak and some of the bigger one can be found on many of the artificial reefs, bridge palings and rock piles in Tampa Bay. I use an extra-long leader of 20-pound fluorocarbon with either a #1 or 1/0 circle hook, glow bead between the hook and the leader, and the lightest sinker I can get away with to keep the bait on the bottom. Small greenback sardines, live shrimp, sandfleas, or fiddler crabs all work well, the bites are going to take place about an hour before the change of tide. (Figure D) All my fishing in August is done early in the morning in by 6:30 a.m. out by 10:00 a.m. unless it is a real cloudy day, I might stretch it another half hour. I try to stay dry and cool. Now the honey dos are done, and your tackle is ready for fishing. Remember, fishing heats up as the water temperature drops.

with Captain Mo Estevez This kid can outfish you July 5, 2021 I know things happen for a reason and that was the theme today as this trip almost didn’t happen due to tropical storm Elsa. Valentyn had booked me about a week ago and wanted his 12 year old son Ivan to catch a big fish but there is hurricane Elsa that was supposed to make a mess of things on Monday so we cancelled. Then Monday morning I wake up and the day is nice. What?! I called Valentyn and we were back on. The first spot was awesome with plenty of fun lady fish eating everything in sight but the highlight was Ivan catching a big permit on his own! I marked them on my Raymarine, baited Ivan up and told him what to do and then the hook up! After a long tough fight and some coaching, Ivan had his big permit in the boat. Wow! We then fished a different spot for sharks and we quickly went 2 for 3 before having to race back to the marina out running the first Elsa related cell. Today was awesome!

Kazakhstan Meet Bonefish July 7, 2021 I had the day off yesterday thanks to hurricane Elsa but more importantly I hope all our fellow Floridians on the west coast are safe as the storm rolls past them. With the weather cleared here in Miami I got back to work with a great family from Kazakhstan, Oscar, Madina and they’re super cute 6 year old Thalia. Oscar didn’t care what we targeted so we fished all over the place but

the fishing was really slow, no snook, no tarpon, no lady fish, snappers. This was starting to suck. After catching a small snapper I decided we needed to go all in and bonefish. Well it didn’t take long before Oscar hooked up and got his first bonefish. Nice! I felt better and can sleep well tonight. That was a close call! Time for a New Hobby! July 12 It’s always interesting to me how things work out sometimes. Today I had Anthony and Christina from N.Y. and if there was a theme to the trip and their attitude to catching fish was “we’re on vacation, we don’t give a crap.” They were relaxed from the moment they jumped in the boat and well, that relaxed me too. I took them to the first spot of the morning and Christina quickly outfished Anthony catching jacks, snappers, losing a snook or two and more. Then that spot slowed down so we hit the finger channels where it started off a bit slow but as the tide began to slow down the fishing picked up. Hmmm, that’s weird. Anyway, they were on fire catching nice yellow jacks on every cast and mixing in a few snappers and other species along the way. Then it happened! A school of permit popped up behind the boat and were cruising on the surface for all the world to see. I pointed them out to Anthony and a perfect cast later he was on! We saw the permit come up and eat, it was awesome! After a careful fight,

We supplement our block chum with YellowtailUp and ChumDrop. We concentrate on the hardhitting mangrove snappers as they are more aggressive and easier to catch. You’ll find them in the shallower, 35- to 50-foot, depths. They average two to four pounds, but we’ve seen them as big as ten pounds!

Live baits do the trick most often, including pilchards, small pinfish to about three inches and small ballyhoo. Some days, the mangroves prefer a chunk bait, such as a slice of pinfish or ballyhoo, or even whole dead pilchards. Drift these baits back in your slick the same as yellowtailing, or fish them on jigheads at or near the bottom.

Mike and Wde are such great guys and were in Miami for the singular mission of fishing as much as possible. With the weather so unstable I decided to stay close to the marina and it paid off. Mike caught about 8 different species and Wade was not far behind as we looked for tarpon. Then, I hear “I got him!” and Wade was on to something that was smoking the reel! Mike asked me what it was but I chose to not say a thing, just in case, but I was pretty sure I knew what Wade had hooked. After a number of blistering runs and significant pressure on the fish, up came a big permit. YES!!! I love permit! We got the pics, the release and then it was a moment to bask in the glory. I ended the trip looking for tarpon to no avail only finding three by a bridge. Wow, what a fish, what a morning and thankfully the weather right over us held up while it was going south quick all around us.

Slightly heavier leaders are required for the mangroves, as their teeth can cut through the lighter leaders rather easily. And, with these bigger baits, we like to use larger Owner SSW hooks in either 1/0 or 2/0 sizes. Jigheads ranging in size from ¼ to ½ ounce will cover all current conditions. The yellowtails are less aggressive, so it’s best to use light 15-pound leaders, small #4 to #6 hooks and small chunks of cut bait, such as ballyhoo, to mimic the pieces of chum drifting in your slick. Our typical setup for mangrove and yellowtail fishing is a 7-foot Star Stellar Lite 12- to 20-pound rod with a Penn Slammer III 5500 reel spooled with 12-pound Berkley Pro Spec and 20- to 25-pound Seaguar fluoro leaders. While you’re fishing on the Atlantic side, check out the deeper wrecks and artificial reefs for nice size mutton snapper and very large black grouper. The Marathon area sees muttons up to 20 pounds this time of year, although the majority are in the 12- to 14-pound class. Live ballyhoo, pinfish or cigar minnows are the baits of choice. For the last couple of
years, we’ve had a pretty consistent run of dolphin during August and September. This time of year, there are lots of weed lines and giant pads of grass, which is where you’ll find most of the dolphin action. You will also find wahoo mixed in. Trolling around these weed lines with lures that resemble flying fish typically blue and white or blue and black patterns - will provide the best results. Also look for birds picking away at the grass, which will help you eliminate a lot of empty water in your search for dolphin. Those with an electric reel setup can search the bottom, looking for any sort of hill or deep depression to find tile fish, rosefish ad snowy grouper. Squid is the best bai for this. Lobster season opens August 6 and brings with it an influx of boaters not familiar with the Keys waters. Be mindful of the additional boat traffic and be on the lookout for dive flags indicating the presence of lobster hunters in the water.
