Ingredients 20 live Florida clams, rinsed 3 teaspoons olive oil 2 large Florida tomatoes, diced 4 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped small 1 cup vegetable broth 2 tablespoons panko breadcrumbs, toasted 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest, chopped fine 1 tablespoon Parmesan cheese, grated 1 pound linguini pasta, cooked (8 ounces raw pasta = 1 pound cooked) 1/2 lemon, juiced 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped 2 heaping tablespoons Cortez Bottarga, shaved (or more to taste) Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

Directions: Preheat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the preheated pan. Carefully add the diced tomatoes and garlic to the pan. Cook tomatoes and garlic for 2 minutes. Season the tomatoes lightly with salt and pepper. Add the vegetable broth and whole clams to the tomato mixture. While the clams are cooking, combine the toasted panko breadcrumbs, lemon zest, Parmesan cheese and 2 tablespoons of olive oil into a small mixing bowl. Stir bread crumb mixture to combine. Cook the clams until they start to open, adding the cooked pasta to the pan when the clams are ready. Lightly toss ingredients to combine. Add lemon juice and the basil to the clam pasta. Taste sauce and adjust seasoning lightly with salt and pepper. The clams should all be open and ready to serve; discard unopened clams. To serve, place an even amount of pasta in each bowl. Nestle the clams around the pasta. Pour the remaining tomato sauce over the pasta. Drizzle the breadcrumb

mixture over the clams and garnish with the Cortez Bottarga.

ummerville, SC – Scout Boats, Inc. recently unveiled the much anticipated 425 LXF S-Class. Scout took the predecessor to this new model, the 420 LXF, and refined numerous aspects throughout the boat. Scout’s LXF Collection is comprised of luxury sportfish models that showcase a unique blending of high-performance fish boats with highend cruisers. The cross between these two popular recreational marine mainstays allows one to enjoy amenities on this collection normally only found on much larger sportfishers. Less than 1% of marine manufacturers utilize these processes. Multiple feeder lines are attached monitored by skilled craftspeople to inject the exact amount of epoxy necessary into the fiberglass and core; then they are vacuum bag infused (creating the strongest

epoxy-to-glass ratio possible), eliminating air pockets and preventing unnecessary excess epoxy. Once fully infused, they are then baked at 135°-140°F for eight hours to post-cure the hull while they are still secured in the mold. “We looked at the popularity and innovation of both our former 420 LXF as well as our current 530 LXF flagship and set a course to develop the new 425 with even more yachtlike characteristics and appointments than its predecessor,” said Scout CEO & Founder Steve Potts. “Our 425 rivals even some of the larger luxury sportfishing machines with its appointments, technology and attention to detail. Red Tide Current Status Current Conditions A bloom of the red tide organism, Karenia brevis, persists on the Florida Gulf Coast. Patchy bloom conditions also persist in Tampa Bay but have improved relative to last week and we are continuing enhanced monitoring in this and surrounding areas. Over the past week, K. brevis was detected in 126 samples. Bloom concentrations (>100,000 cells/liter) were observed in 69 samples: 10 from Pasco County, 29 from Pinellas County, four from Hillsborough County, four from Manatee County, and 22 from Sarasota County. In Southwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was observed at low to high concentrations in and offshore of Pinellas County, background to medium concentrations in Hillsborough County, background to high concentrations in Manatee County, very low to high concentrations in Sarasota County, background to very low concentrations in Charlotte County, and background to low concentrations in Lee County. 5 TIPS FOR GREEN BOATING from Monterey Boats One of the many benefits of Monterey boating is experiencing all the beauty our natural world has to offer us. It is our job as boaters to help protect and conserve our natural world by the practices of Green Boating. Listed below are just a few of the many things we can do to help prevent pollution and damage to our natural world and the species that live there:

the surrounding environment, birds and marine species. A preventative measure you can take is to buy products that do not contain any plastic or excess packaging. It’s also a good idea to designate a trash container on the boat. Feel like lending an extra hand to the environment? Pick up any trash you see floating out in the water throughout the day.

1) Contain Trash An important part of becoming a Green Boater is learning how to contain trash to the inside of the boat. Never throw trash, fishing line or cigarette butts into the water. Trash items that get thrown or blown out of the boat become hazardous to

2) When Possible Clean the Boat Out of the Water Many of the products used to wash and clean boat hulls and decks consist of toxic ingredients such as chlorine, phosphates and ammonia. These ingredients are incredibly harmful to fish as they dry the natural oils needed for their gills to absorb oxygen. If possible save your boat cleaning for off the water locations. If you must clean the boat on the water try purchasing environmentally friendly, bio degradable cleaning products. Make sure to cross check these items with your boats manual of

approved cleaning products. 3) Chart Your Course Pre-charting a boating course allows you to have a better understanding of the local waterways thus allowing for the prevention of damage to fragile sea floor habitats or injury to marine life by boat propellers. In 2011, The Florida Wildlife Conservation reported 100 watercraft related manatee deaths. Another benefit of pre-charting a boating trip is that it allows for minimal misdirection and the conservation of the boats fuel supply. 4) Recycle Recycling glass, plastic, aluminum and paper products ensures the cleanliness of our waterways as well the preservation of our landfills. Many marinas now offer recycling programs at their facilities for boaters to use after a day out on the water. It’s also important to dispose of batteries, antifreeze, oil and cleaning products along with other hazardous waste materials at appropriate waste management facilities rather than disposing of them into the water or a trashcan. You can also further protect marine life by the recycling

of fishing line made from monofilament. A list of monofilament recycling programs can be found on the internet. 5) Prevention of Exotic Plant and Sea Life into other Waterways Exotic plant and sea life may become attached to boats and their trailers allowing them to accidentally be introduced to new, foreign waterways. When these species are introduced they spread quickly which makes them difficult and costly to eradicate. These species are extremely harmful to the native waterway species as they block out or prevent them from receiving the nutrients needed for survival. To prevent the spreading of these exotic species you should avoid hacking through vegetation with your boats outboard motor propellers as well as by checking the boat, trailer, dive and fishing gear for exotic species. Captain’sCorner with Captain Dylan Hubbard Inshore Fishing Report We had another great week with mostly gorgeous waterways. This current red tide event is extremely spotty with most pockets along the south side of Tampa Bay and outside at least my local area of operations from Fort De Soto to Johns Pass. We are hoping it will continue on that way very spotty and not widespread and eventually break up and move away from the area! That is the hope at least, and we will see what happens. The snook fishing has been incredible this week with lots of weather and lots of rain. We have seen these guys feeding along the beaches, in the passes, around the docks, bridges, piers and of course up to the bays and rivers too. Virtually throughout the entire area the snook are very active and feeding well. Yesterday we must have had around 400+ snook hanging under our dock and along the sand build up behind our office during the outgoing tide mid-morning. We had tons of fresh water pouring out of the pass making the water extremely brown and tannic looking like a creek or river, but that seemed to have the snook even more pumped with the decrease in salinity levels it seems to have them concentrated more in the pass devouring the passing bait with the increased outbound tidal flows. This rain has really shaken up our local eco system and influxed a bunch of fresh water into the system which I am hopeful will help ‘flush out’ and clean up any potential remnants of that red tide

that was extremely background level in our area recently. The snook are feeding mostly at night like normally around the docks and bridge lights and through the early morning hours. However, during the day the bite on the beaches has been hot and also around the jetties and piers along the beaches too. Live shrimp, white bait, grunts, and even a variety of artificial lures have all been working well to produce snook action. The flats have seen active snook too, but many of the biggest fish are moving into the passes and onto the beaches gearing up for their near shore summertime spawn. Redfish action has been steady this past week as well. They are biting best on the higher tides around the flats, mangrove shorelines and oyster bars. However, we have been seeing them pretty steadily around the docks adjacent and inside the passes too. Look for them actively feeding around the schools of mullet on the flats too. Mullet forage through the grass and silty debris which spook the baits like crabs, shrimp, and pinfish out from their hiding spots just in time to be garbled up by the redfish hanging behind the school of mullet. Sheepshead are around right now and this past week we have seen them spread out more with all the rain. They are now back to the docks, piers, and bridges like they are during the winter. However, still not biting quite as well and still not as prolific with warmer

OFFSHORE/ NEARSHORE Most anglers I’ve spoken to over the past week who fish from Sarasota to Clearwater are saying that they can keep bait alive beyond about 25-to 40-feet. This might be the area where clean water begins as you run offshore. With that said pinfish traps that are closer to shore may not keep fish live. Red tide can be patchy and move with both the tides and wind-driven currents. Capt. Dylan Hubbard of Hubbard’s Marina says their party boats running the long-distance trips have been having some terrific catches of red snapper to 15-pounds. Their most recent trip had more than a dozen of them in that size range. In addition, lane, vermilion, and mangrove snappers were all

caught along with gag grouper, blackfin tunas, cobia, and much more, making a decent haul for the anglers on this 39-hour trip. This weekend’s full moon will be one of the best for night fishing for snapper. Mangrove snapper are in the spawning mode and will chew hard during this period wherever you find them. The slower portion of the incoming tides near the top will make for some cleaner water and might be the best time to target mangos. INSHORE The upper portion of Tampa Bay has been fairly consistent giving up catches of snook and redfish. Capt. Bucky Goldman of Tampa has been throwing cut bait and live bait for these fish in the upper bay. A recent trip resulted in a 38.5-inch snook that was caught and released. Redfish have been scattered, but the bulk of the fish have been found around areas with

West Central Florida Southwest Coast water and more of them spread out due to the weather. The same tackle approaches are working well though with lighter tackle and small pieces of shrimp or clams or even live fiddlers working best. Mangrove snapper are thick around virtually any structure right now from docks, to seawalls, to bridges and everything in between. If it can hold some growth and attract bait or crustaceans, you will find some hungry mangrove snapper. Deeper waters with moving currents tend to hold more active and larger fish in bigger concentrations. However, you can find nice concentrations of these aggressive fish virtually anywhere you can target with some chum and light tackle. Trout bite has been steady this past week with the same trends holding true again. We are finding most of these fish around the deeper flats and look for them most concentrated around the cuts, pockets, potholes, and deeper ledges of the flats. Using a popping cork and some live shrimp or live green backs have been great over those deeper grass flats. Deep dropping for swordfish is always a plus when it is calm, and our calmest weather is always in the summer. One trip that is also excellent in the summer is nighttime swordfish. It’s been a while since our last night sword trip, but I am ready at any time as this is really the way to battle a big swordfish. No electric reels, just a conventional reel in a stand up harness – mano a mano!!

Near-shore, kingfish will be the staple on the reefs and wrecks in 70 to 90 feet of water, with a mixed bag of three, wahoo, dolphin, and an occasional sailfish, thrown in. My preferred method for targeting these species is slow trolling live bait (pogies) on steel stinger rigs.

Another great fishery and a great adventure is to plan a trip to Bimini. The Covid rules for the Bahamas have been relaxed a bit and if you are fully vaccinated you do not need to test for Covid prior to your trip. If you are not vaccinated, which I highly recommend, you can still enter the Bahamas with a negative Covid test. BTW - both Billy and I are fully vaccinated. Southeast Coast tunas as well as some big mahis. Without a doubt my favorite fishing in the summer is always in the Bahamas. Fishing the past couple of weeks has been challenging. The mahis are around but not in the numbers we would expect, and the size seems lower than it should be. Not to lose faith though, last year late July and August were much better than June and that will definitely be the case again this year. Don’t know if it is global warming or just a trend but it seems that every fishery is later and later each year. Before you know it, summer will be over so book your trip to Bimini or book a trip for mahis or swordfish (day or night) and lets makes some memories.

Barletta makes acquisition announcement benefitting employees

arlier this week, Winnebago Industries, Inc. announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Barletta Pontoon Boats (Barletta). Barletta anticipates the acquisition, which is expected to close in the Fall of 2021, will allow the manufacturer to further accelerate its growth, expand their offerings, and gain greater share of the pontoon boat market segment. On Monday, July 20, the day of the announcement, Barletta president and founder Bill Fenech and Winnebago CEO and president Mike Happe hosted an all-employee meeting to build excitement and celebrate the announcement, and answer any questions Barletta’s teams may have had. “When we started the company in 2017, we had a very simple goal,” stated Fenech, “Let’s start a great company, with great people, building a great product and take care of our customers like no one else in the industry. What we’ve done over the past 4 years is exactly that. At the same time, we have so much more to do. In the end though, we wouldn’t be where we are today without our extended Barletta family, those employed at Barletta. From the top to the bottom, they are the “secretsauce” in Barletta’s success.”

ne of the great pleasures a boater can enjoy is sleeping onboard. The calming sound of waves gently lapping against the hull can lull even the most wound-up insomniac into a peaceful night’s slumber. But there are some tricks and tips you should know before you go out for your first evening on the water. As with real estate purchases, the first thing to remember is location, location, location. Your choice of anchorage, particularly while you’re trying to master the basics, is key to a worry-free night. For that reason, you’ll want to choose a small, protected cove. Weather conditions can change in a hurry, so give yourself every chance for shelter and reduce the impact of other boat traffic. For overnighting, it’s a good idea to have an anchor that’s at least one size larger than recommended for your boat. No one ever woke up the next morning and regretted opting for the security of an anchor that was too secure! A good rule of thumb for choosing anchors for normal uses would be about one pound of anchor for every two feet of boat. That would mean a 10-pound anchor for a 20-foot cuddy. For overnighting, that boat would be safer with a 15-pound anchor. Practice your setup in the daylight. Attach one end of a 3/16-inch galvanized coil chain (at least

as long as your boat) to the anchor. Attach the other end of the chain to 7/16 braided nylon rope that’s about 10 times longer than the depth of the water at high-tide. Head to the spot you’ve chosen to spend the evening and stop the boat. Drop the anchor quickly (or “smartly” if you want to brush up on your sailor lingo). When the anchor makes contact with the bottom, slowly back up while paying out the rope (“line”), ensuring you don’t have any knots and that you’re well clear of the propeller. Tie off the line to a deck cleat and reduce speed by half. The anchor shouldn’t drag, and you should feel it dig into the bottom and set itself.

Note: The full range your boat will spin if the wind changes direction. Having a single pivot point, as long as you’re far enough from any other boats and the shoreline, should protect you from drifting, particularly in a small cove. For another level of protection, you can also tie off to a fixed object on land such as a tree. Just make sure, that you’re not trespassing on private land. With a little practice and preparation, you can take the worry out of sleeping aboard and learn to love spending a night “on the hook.”

These classes are not your standard webinar sessions where the students sit at their computers and are lectured at. The Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering outstanding “Boat America” course via two options: August 28 and 29 - Virtual Boat America 9am to 2pm. Classes are $40 per student and include the books, supplemental materials and course completion certificates. The classes being offered by the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary are conducted on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. In addition, because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! The boating safety class is also a requirement for many boaters in Florida.
