Want to Make Your Local Waterway Safer or Cleaner for Boaters? ‘Think big’ and apply for a BoatUS Foundation Grassroots Grant
A
NNAPOLIS, Md., August 3, 2021 – Do you have an out-of-the-box idea that could improve boating safety or the environmental health of local waters? The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water Grassroots Grant program provides local groups up to $10,000 each to help educate boaters on safe and clean boating topics. A 365-day rolling grant application process allows applicants to apply at any time throughout the year. To get started, all a local group has to do is submit a short letter of intent explaining its idea. The goal of the BoatUS member-funded program is to facilitate behavioral changes in the boating community through grassroots projects, some of which have ranged from hands-on education about the effects of marine debris, video public service announcements on preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species, and a unique pilot study of fiberglass recycling. “Think big. Think never-been-done-before,” said BoatUS Foundation Director of Outreach Alanna Keating. “Is the project potentially scalable? Is there extensive outreach to boaters? Does it include hands-on work with the boating community? Does it offer quantifiable measures of success?” Added Keating, “Over the past year we have seen a surge in new boat owners who have never owned or operated a boat before. Is there a way our grant program can help these first-time boaters improve their focus on safety or clean water, which can have an impact over the course of their boating life?” Boat and yacht clubs, environmental groups, nonprofit organizations, student groups or local chapters of national organizations such as BASS, U.S. Power Squadrons and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary are encouraged to apply. The
timeline for grant projects is one year or less. Grant funding is not designed for capital improvements or general operating funds, projects that include lobbying efforts or political action, or those that provide specialized training or equipment for the recipient group members. Expenses for transportation, meals or lodging, purchase of electronic hardware/software, or boats and other boating gear are also not covered. Since 1989, the Foundation has awarded more than $1.3 million in boating safety and clean water grants to organizations. For more information or to apply, go to BoatUS.org/Grants.

Mercury Marine Announces New Global Leadership Team
F
OND DU LAC, Wisc. (August 5, 2021) – Mercury Marine, a leader in marine propulsion systems and a division of Brunswick Corporation (NYSE:BC) has announced multiple job moves and promotions within its global leadership team with the objective of continuing to strengthen its leadership position in the marketplace and expanding the global experience of key talent. These actions are effective immediately. Will Sangster is promoted to President, Mercury EMEA. Sangster has been General Manager of ANZP since 2014 and added responsibility for the Asia region in 2019. Under his leadership, Mercury APAC has continued to grow revenue and market share. Sangster will relocate to Mercury’s European headquarters in Petit-Rechain, Belgium. Marty Bass, who has been the president of Mercury’s EMEA business for the past five years, will be moving back to the U.S. to take on a future role within the company that will be announced shortly. Bass has been with the company for 15 years in leadership positions of increasing responsibility, including Vice President of Category Management for Mercury Marine in Fond du Lac. Replacing Sangster in APAC will be Brad Zoelle who has
been promoted to General Manager, APAC Region. Zoelle joined Mercury from Brunswick Boat Group as General Manager of Canada in 2020 after spending more than five years with Sea Ray in several leadership positions. Replacing Zoelle as General Manager, Mercury Canada will be Jonathan Levine. Levine most recently served as Vice President, Strategy and Finance, Business Acceleration, and worked closely with Brunswick leadership across all divisions. “The promotion of Will, Brad and Jonathan as well as Marty’s new role not only demonstrates our deep talent bench within Brunswick and Mercury, but also positions us for incredible success in the future,” said Chris Drees, Mercury Marine president. “I am confident that we will continue to build on our leadership position in the marketplace, leveraging the talent of our employees around the world as well as our industry leading product lineup.” Due to travel restrictions associated with COVID-19, Sangster, Bass and Zoelle will fully transition to their new locations over the next few months.

DiscoverBoating Boat Trip Checklist: 8 Things You Need on a Boat
M
ost savvy boaters have a predeparture checklist of one sort or another, and if they trailer their boats, they hopefully have a trailering checklist as well. Others people may have a checklist they refer to just once a year for spring commissioning, or one for sea trials on unfamiliar boats that they only focus on when they’re boat shopping. But shouldn’t everyone also have a checklist of the things they need to bring aboard, each and every time they pull of the dock? You bet. No matter what type of boating you do, you’ll always need these 8 critical items on board a boat: • Safety gear (including U.S. Coast Guard required equipment) • Proper documentation & registration • Provisions for the day • Extra lines • First-aid kit • An anchor & rode • VHF Radio & your cell phone • Emergency repair items
1. Safety Gear Safety gear is obviously number one on our list and should be at the very top of yours, too. This includes both Coast Guard mandated gear as well as other
items you should have close at hand no matter where or when you go boating. Proper Documentation In most states, you’re required to carry the proper documentation for both your boat and yourself. Check your specific state’s requirements, but in most cases this will include things like the boat registration, your boater education card, and personal identification such as a driver’s license. https://discoverboating. com/ownership/safety/boating-rulesand-regulations-by-state 3. Provisions for the Day There’s no doubt that food and drink are already something you think about bringing on every outing, but when you go boating there are also some additional provisions you should carry. • Extra water is always important to have on hand because it’s easy to becomes dehydrated on hot summer days. • It’s also good to have some fresh watermelon, yogurt, or oranges aboard, all of which both hydrate and provide a blast of energy. • Other important provisions include suntan lotion and bug repellent, both of
which can greatly increase your comfort level aboard a boat. 4. Extra Lines Extra lines can come in handy when you least expect it. You may decide to raft up with a friend or go to a waterfront restaurant that has a pier but no lines. And line can also come in handy for lashing things down. 5. First-Aid Kit Scrapes, bruises, and other potential injuries, whether minor or severe, that might require a first-aid kit are good to be prepared for. It’s always a good idea to keep a basic first-aid kit onboard—with the hope that you won’t need to use it. Better safe, then sorry. Make sure your first-aid kit is stocked appropriately for the number of passengers you expect to have onboard. Always check your kit at least once a year to restock on common used items or replace any items that may have expired. An Anchor and Rode Some people don’t carry an anchor and rode (the chain and line) because they never plan to anchor out. But this isn’t a wise move, because an anchor and rode are not only handy for having
lunch “on the hook” or anchoring in Party Cove. They should also be considered as safety gear. If you break down and need to call for a tow, being able to anchor will maintain your position and make it easier for the tow boat to find you. It will also ensure that you don’t drift into a busy channel or a rocky shoreline. 7. VHF Radio & Your Cell Phone We highly recommend having a VHF radio onboard in case of an emergency. Unlike cell phones, VHF radios can operate without a network, so it can be a great tool to have if you need to call for help or on-water assistance. Of course, one of the great things about being on a boat is that it allows you to un-plug from the rest of the world, and enjoy nature and the great outdoors without having to answer every ring and ping of the cell phone. So we think that you should feel free to turn that cell phone off and stow it away, or at least set it to mute. You should still, however, bring it aboard. While in some cases you may be able to use your cell phone to call for assistance, it can also come in handy as a navigational device, a weather monitor, or even a fishing tool. experience above and beyond serving as a communications device. 8. Emergency Repair Items Most boaters are a lot more interested in having fun on the water than in swinging a wrench or performing onthe-water repairs. So if you’re not a doit-yourselfer you probably won’t want to haul a fully stocked toolbox and spare parts. That said, there are a number of emergency repairs that can be performed quickly and easily to get you home and/or prevent additional damage to your boat and its gear. The short-list of repair items that belong aboard every boat includes: • Duct tape, for securing things that may swing or flap when broken or ripped. • A screw driver with regular and Phillips heads, for tightening screws that vibrate loose. • An adjustable crescent wrench, for tightening bolts that vibrate loose. • A portable jumper pack, in case of a dead battery. • A knife, in the chance you need to untangle lines or debris from your propeller. • Electrical tape, for mending broken wires. • A flashlight, for illuminating enclosed compartments and/or in case you inadvertently end up staying on the water after dark.

Florida Lobster Bites with Avocado-Lime Puree Ingredients 2 (9-ounce) spiny lobster tails, removed from shell and cut into 1-ounce bites 20 (3-inch) bamboo skewers canola or olive oil for cooking sea salt to taste fresh ground pepper to taste 1/2 avocado 2 limes, juiced 1/2 red bell pepper, diced fine Directions: Preheat a medium-sized sauté pan over medium-high heat.

Carefully add the skewered lobster bites to the hot pan being careful not to over crowd the pan. Cook lobster bites for just 30 seconds on each side (the lobster bites will cook quickly so it is important to keep a close eye on them). Once the lobster bites are cooked, remove them from pan, and let drain on a paper towel.

Repeat the cooking process until all the lobster bites are cooked (this cooking process can be done ahead of time and the lobster can be served cold if desired). To serve, arrange the lobster bites on a plate with a bowl of avocado puree, or add a small amount of avocado puree into the bottom of several shot glasses and top each glass with the cooked lobster bites. Garnish the lobster bites with the fine diced red pepper.

“A Green Power Plant Of A Boat” The Ocean Explorer 72 Powered by Torqeedo
C
annes, France (3 September 2021) – When you grow up in Finland you are never under the impression that nature is something you can form at will. On the contrary, you learn to understand the forces of the sea and the seasons – and adapt. “It’s part of our heritage to take care of nature and live in accordance with it,” says Tomas Halmesmäki, founder and CEO of OQS. “That’s why there are so many new developments in electric mobility on the water here – from urban ferries to private boating.” One of the most impressive green projects from Finland is OQS’ own Ocean Explorer 72, a hightech luxury catamaran equipped with a Torqeedo Deep Blue Hybrid electric propulsion and energy management system with twin Deep Blue 100i electric motors and four state-of-the-art Deep Blue batteries. While at sea, the yacht generates its own green, renewable energy through 4 kW solar panels and hydrogeneration, with two back up gensets. “It really is a green power plant of a boat,” Halmesmäki says. “Torqeedo was the one supplier out there who
could fulfil the owner’s requirements,” Halmesmäki says. Also, Torqeedo fit well into the collaborative, customized approach of OQS. “The Deep Blue system is almost infinitely customizable. There’s a wide variety of motor types in different power classes, battery banks, user interfaces and charging options, all fully integrated into the overall system architecture,” says Dr Ralf Plieninger, managing director of Torqeedo. “The modular approach allows us to build the perfect system for each boat.” As a life-long boater and trained engineer, Halmesmäki appreciates the OE 72 from two perspectives. “To me, the most important differentiator is the silence and the autonomy you gain with Deep Blue,” Tomas says. Thanks to the solar panels and the ability to charge the batteries while under sail, generator runtime is minimised and sailors can stay at sea for long stretches. But peace and quiet doesn’t come at the expense of comfort: the OE72 is fully equipped with multimedia systems, a double fridge, air conditioning, and other amenities.
Comfort is key – on board and while managing the Torqeedo system. The state of charge is displayed on every screen on a pull-down bar. And with one click the user gets more detailed information about the low-voltage Torqeedo battery bank which supplies most of the yacht’s hotel loads and the high-capacity Deep Blue batteries. When the boat reaches a speed of 5-7 knots, the Torqeedo motors can be used as hydrogenerators. “With a few clicks you switch to automatic hydrogeneration mode,” Dr Ralf Plieninger explains. “Deep Blue Hybrid’s energy management system ensures that renewable power is used, produced, and stored in the most efficient manner. The algorithm automatically finds the highest torque the propeller can run at that sailing speed for maximum energy production.” Owners can see how energy is being produced and consumed on the yacht and how the solar modules are charging the low-voltage batteries with a glance at the control screen’s energy flow monitor. The Deep Blue propulsion batteries are
charged while sailing and by solar energy once the low-voltage battery bank is fully charged. If power runs low due to long stretches at anchor or a lack of sun, the owner decides the exact state of charge or time of day the gensets will kick in. Captain’sCorner with Captain Dylan Hubbard Nearshore Fishing Report Red grouper continue to bite well in the deepest near shore waters. We are seeing the most fish beyond the near shore waters from the shallower to the deepest offshore waters beyond 100ft but were still catching steady numbers of keeper sized red grouper in the deepest near shore waters from around 80100ft of water. You can find keeper red grouper as shallow as 40-50ft, but the more common keeper sized fish become more prevalent the deeper you get. Like many fish, they are in search of cooler more active waters. Look for them in the potholes, cuts, hardbottom or small ledges type areas. Mangrove snapper are coming up in a steady clip near shore around 60-100ft of water. We are seeing some steady action and some overall size that is impressive. However, like the red grouper the bigger fish seem to be most common the deeper you go. Keep that lighter tackle double snell rig ready with 3040lb test leader and 4-5ot hooks using cut thread fin. You can also use around a 30lb leader and a
single hook with live shrimp or a smaller chunk of threadfin or squid to target the near shore mangrove snapper that get more pressure and tend to be more leader shy in those shallower brighter near shore waters. With the new moon action this week we should see more mangroves biting better during the daytime hours. Lane snappers continue to bite well near shore from around 50-100ft of water we are seeing steady lane snapper on a variety of baits. Shrimp, cut threadfin or even squid works to target the lane snapper. These guys will often be found around similar structures as the red grouper and are a great bycatch when targeting the mangrove snapper using that same set up rig wise recommended above. Gag grouper action is very tough near shore right now overall unless you’re up in the bay around the shipping channel or passing near shore waters to head out deeper. Lots of these guys get broken off near shore when targeting the snapper or hogfish using light tackle
with Captain Rick Grassett Sarasota’s Sept. Fishing Forecast A red tide bloom has been affecting SW Florida for the past couple of months so conditions may change daily or even from tide to tide. I look for birds behaving normally, baitfish and clearer water to find areas free of red tide. Patches of red tide will move fish around and may concentrate them in an area of clean water. Also back country areas may be less prone to red tide due to more brackish water this time of year. That being said, September is usually one of my favorite months. Reds should be schooling on shallow grass flats and you also might find big trout there at first light. Baitfish along beaches will attract Spanish mackerel, false albacore (little tunny), sharks, tarpon and more. You should find snook around docks and bridges in the ICW. There should also be tarpon around bridges at night and in areas of Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor. Juvenile tarpon from 10 to 30-pounds should be a good option in creeks and canals. Tarpon will still be a good option this month. There may still be a few singles, doubles and small schools in the coastal gulf and if you’ve got the patience to wait them out it can be good.

Many have moved to inside waters this month, so you’ll find them around bridges, over deep grass flats or deeper areas. When tarpon move into these areas, they are in a feeding mode. After a long migration and with their spawning duties completed, they need to rest and eat to restore themselves. Ladyfish will feed in glass minnow schools and tarpon will gorge themselves on ladyfish. I have also seen tarpon, “ball” glass minnows into tight schools, and eat them by the bucket full! DOA Baitbusters, TerrorEyz and DOA Shrimp are my favorite tarpon lures this time of year. Fly anglers should score with wide profile patterns, such as Lefty’s Deceiver or EP flies. Small flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow, tied on a 1/0 or 2/0 hook, are another good choice for tarpon that are feeding on glass minnows. Snook and reds remain closed to harvest south of State Rd 64 in Manatee County on the west coast of Florida, south to the south bank of Gordon Pass in Collier County. Remember, spinning reels have higher gear ratios and the higher the gear ratio like 5 to 1 or better the more speed your line will retrieve with but the less torque or power. The lower the gear ratio, you may have more power and torque, but your speed greatly diminishes. If you have the budget a two-speed convention solves this dilemma, or you could use a more medium gear ratio with a solid drag to get the job done until you can get that twospeed set up. Mahi mahi are still the near shore pelagic action right now. We are seeing the occasional peanut or chicken dolphin show up alongside the boat while bottom fishing. They will also start making their move towards shallow flats where you might find them staging along sand bars or in potholes. Surface walking top water plugs or fly popper and Gurglers may draw some big strikes in shallow water early in the day. I often fish lighted docks and bridges for snook before dawn before moving to the flats after daylight. CAL jigs with shad tails and jerk worms, DOA Shrimp or small white flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow, should all work well. The main bite has been on a few different lures lately depending on what you’re fishing. In cleaner water, weightless flukes slowly jerked near the bottom have been working best. In the current, Carolina rigs with a worm on the back have been putting fish in the boat. And in dirtier water with hydrilla, speedworms and chatterbaits r e e l e d through the grass
As per usual the main group of bass can be found on submerged and topped out grass patches. Mainly hydrilla but eel grass and pepper grass have been holding fish also. The
FISHING IS HOT! The fishing IS hot. So is the weather… But the warm temperatures have not slowed the fishing down. The action has been very good with a surprise out of the blue… Blue Marlin that is, but I’ll get to that in a moment.
Mixed in with the Bonito are Kingfish and some Blackfin Tuna. Now we are into edible fish. The smaller Kings are good when fresh. The Blackfin Tune is sushi grade so you can’t go wrong. When we say a fresh

Most of the fish we’re catching though are coming off of wild golden shiners, and they have not been shy about hitting them on top the water lately. All in all it’s been a pretty solid summer of bass fishing here on Lake Toho. The states new management plan for the lake is leaving plenty of hydrilla to be fished throughout the lake which has made the fishing very consistent for both numbers and size of bass and I see it continuing throughout the rest of the year. Just a mile from shore the Bonito (Little Tunny) have been biting well offering us plenty of action. While not great table fare, they fight hard as they are a false Tuna. Often, multiple fish on at the same time. This gets everyone involved and all have a chance to bend the rod.

fish dinner? It’s doesn’t get any better or fresher than that! Mahi- mahi fishing, further from shore, has been inconsistent. The longer the trip, the better chance of success. The fish we have been catching have been legal to keep so that’s a bonus. Usually this time of year, lots of throw backs are what we’re catching. Wahoo have been scarce but should be more predominant soon. September/ October are good months for these. Every once in a while you run into something you don’t expect. This is where opportunity meets preparedness, as was the case the other day with Jimmy, Dan and their group of anglers. While searching for Mahi out in the deep blue, a Blue Marlin decided to eat
Southeast Coast one of the baits. The fight was on! And it shouldn’t have lasted long but did. We prefer catching these magnificent Gamefish on tackle suited for them. The TLD 30 with 30# test is not the rod you want this bite on. And a fight that lasts over 3 hours on that kind of tackle has you sweating at each run he makes. But when all is said and done? The release at the boat makes it all worthwhile. And the traditional swim after catching your first Blue was honored by Dan, his first one. As I said, it’s been hot so the push into the water was welcome. Not so much in January… Hope to see you soon.

With the advent of COVID-19, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was advised to discontinue in-person classes for the safety of the instructors and students. The good news is that the State of Florida (FWC) and the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved the Coast Guard Auxiliary to conduct online classes. These classes are not your standard webinar sessions where the students sit at their computers and are lectured at. And they’re not animated cartoon sessions where you have to keep pressing enter to get to the next topic. The Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering outstanding “Virtual Boat America” course options: September 18th & 19th; October 23rd & 24th; November 20th & 21st; December 18th & 19th. All classes are from 9am to 2pm. Classes are $40 per student and include the books, supplemental materials and course completion certificates. The classes being offered by the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary are conducted on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. In addition, because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! The boating safety class is also a requirement for many boaters in Florida. In the Sunshine State, anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, must successfully complete a boater
