In a small bowl, toss shrimp with seafood seasoning; cover and chill for 1 hour. Slice hard-boiled eggs in half lengthwise and remove yolks. In a mixing bowl, mash yolks with a fork and add remaining ingredients. Spoon the yolk mixture into the egg white halves, mounding slightly. Top each egg half with a seasoned shrimp and wedge into yolk filling. Arrange on a platter, garnish with parsley and chill until ready to serve.

Boaters, Did You Make Santa’s Naughty or Nice List?
L
ittle kids aren’t the only ones who need a reminder or two at this point in the year to behave better. We all risk getting a lump of coal in our stockings, in fact, having let some lax behaviors become bad habits. It’s especially important to straighten up and fly right (or, should we say, steer right) when you’re out on the water. Read through these behaviors to see whether you made Santa’s naughty or nice list—and how to course correct if need be.
The Naughty List
Forgetting to perform routine maintenance. While it takes time and money to care for your boat, it’s even more costly to neglect it. It’s also dangerous, risking your safety and those of your passengers and fellow boaters. Check out our Maintenance Guide for reference. Lingering at the fuel dock. Fuel docks have limited space, after all, so others may need to pull in to the space you’re occupying. When you’ve fueled up, move on; save the socializing for the shore, and tie up elsewhere if you want to provision for your day out. Speeding through a no-wake zone. Harbors have speed restrictions for good reasons. Sensitive shorelines can get damaged, for instance. Additionally, swimmers may be in the water, or you could swamp another boat. Be respectful, and slow
down (see Boating Regulatory Zones: What is a ‘No Wake’ Zone?) Taking too long at the boat ramp. Everyone’s anxious to make the most of their hours on the water. Therefore, reduce your time on the boat ramp by pulling your boat over to the side—say, to the beach or a dock—to load guests and everyone’s gear. When your cruising day is done, pull your vehicle and trailer over to the side to unload or clean your boat.

Being clean and green. Since we all love the water, it’s imperative that we protect it as well as the sea- and land life it supports. From seeking out environmentally friendly cleaning products for your boat to never tossing garbage overboard, little things add up to big differences. To get started, read Green Boating Tips: 10 Best Practices for Boaters. Offering a hand. Grabbing someone’s dock lines when they’re returning to shore or departing for the day isn’t just a nice gesture. It can be a world of help, especially if a dockmaster isn’t around. Taking a boater-education course. If you’re new to boating, the best gift you can give yourself this season is a boater’s-ed class. Many are free or low cost, too. Even if you’ve been boating since childhood, refresh your memory on the Rules of the Water. You might just earn your captain’s license if you have enough hours on the water, setting a

Waving hello is a time-honored tradition, done regardless of the make, model, size, or style of a boat. If someone waves at you from their boat or yacht, wave back. Captain’sCorner with Captain Ray Markham It’s possible that the chamber of commerce was involved in the recent string of fantastic weather days. Look for a great weekend ahead before the next front arrives late Sunday or Monday. Be sure and monitor the weather for changes. OFFSHORE/ NEARSHORE Hogfish have been active for anglers fishing near shore in depths ranging from 30-to 60feet. Live shrimp have been a top bait for them. A few kingfish were reported in the catch this week, but the bulk of the action seems to have passed us and is going off down near Naples. However, just a couple of days ago a school of kings was reported off Hernando shores, so stay tuned perhaps for another wave of kingfish action. Live baits might be the key to catching some of the largest kingfish, but those big fish aren’t the best to eat and also contain a significant amount of mercury. Barely legal kings are likely the best eating, but smoking kingfish will usually make them all taste about the same. Trolling for kings may also put you into some big Spanish mackerel or even a stray gag grouper for anglers trolling over shallow hard bottom areas in 20-to 30feet from Pinellas to Pasco. Lots of hard bottom off Sand Key has been known to produce catches of both gags and kings this time of year. Trolling spoons like the L.B. Huntington Drone on #1 or #2 planers will get the lures down. Add a couple of spoons on flatlines to cover more of the water column and you might score some good eats. Depths beyond 100-feet are producing a good variety of fish. Big gag grouper and plenty of mangrove snapper are being caught along with some vermilions. Shallower depths are producing good numbers of white grunts. Several reports have come in from anglers catching some big cobia off Sarasota shores. One of them is from Capt. Jonnie Walker. For just about 48-years, Capt. Jonnie Walker of Bay Walker Charters in Sarasota has been taking anglers fishing. He’s trying to ease into retirement, but he still hasn’t lost a step. On a recent trip, his

anglers caught a variety of fish including triggerfish and good numbers of cobia. Kudos to Capt. Jonnie for the many years of good times he’s afforded his clients and for his dedication to fisheries conservation. INSHORE Since last Saturday’s new moon, fishing has been perking up inshore. A combination of good tides with fast-moving water and warmer days has produced some great catches of snook up the rivers and creeks and in warm residential canals. For anglers fishing out of the Ozona Fish Camp, it’s been steady action with bent rods for a variety of species. Capt. Jim Huddleston’s clients have had steady action with snook, trout, redfish, pompano, and several other species that are being caught there. Excellent water quality has fish loving the heavy seagrass beds and gin clean water in the area from Dunedin north to Tarpon Springs. Big trout action has been pretty steady, and some of the best in the region. Live shrimp and pilchards have been mainstays for live bait, but some excellent action for trout has been coming on DOA Deadly Combos, and DOA Shrimp worked in potholes. Morning low tides this week have pushed fish into channels and potholes. Some of the best action has been for anglers downsizing leaders to 20-lb. mono for reds, 25-lb. mono for snook, and 15lb. mono for trout and other fish. Barrier islands along the coast from Clearwater north have seen some redfish action. The ICW from St. Joseph’s Sound has been productive. In Tampa Bay, Cockroach Bay, and Weedon Island have seen some snook and redfish action. Deeper grass flats are producing a few trout. Tripletail have been caught inside Tampa Bay and along the beaches by anglers using live shrimp, DOA Shrimp, and by sight-

West Central Florida Southwest Coast casting flies to the fish with fly rods. FRESHWATER Capt. Rick Gross of Fishy Business Charters, (www. fishybusinessllc.com), out of Bradenton took a little time off from guiding to head over to the Lakeland area to fish for some speckled perch. Many anglers find this kind of fishing quite relaxing even though the action can really fire up in the winter months. Finding the schools is fairly easy with a depth finder by looking for the schools of fish, but drift fishing can accomplish almost the same task but with much more time involved. Some boats deploy multiple crappie poles placed in rod holders rigged with #8 hooks on 4-pound test mono set at different depths and a small float. Missouri minnows are go-to live bait, but an assortment of crappie jigs can work just as well sometimes. Once you locate a good bite, drop a marker, note the depth fish are caught at, and continue fishing and drifting until the bite stops and drop a second marker. Return upwind to the first marker dropped and repeat catching fish between the two markers. Many of the latest fishfinders have side scan as well as down scan that can really reduce the time looking for schools of fish, just as trolling motors with spot locks and tracks that can be plotted and returned to duplicate a productive area are a few of the innovations that are making anglers much more effective in catching fish. Take these into consideration with the number of anglers now on the water and you can see where it might lead down the road if we don’t all practice restraint in keeping only what we need for a meal or two. By limiting your take instead of taking your limit, we’ll all see a fishery that is sustainable going into the future.

He’s on fire! Day three with Mike and the man is on fire! We were back in Homestead with perfect conditions (which included over cast skies and zero wind) and off we went to fish for bonefish. The bonefishing on the outgoing tide was surprisingly slow with only a few schools showing up for our sight seeing pleasure. With that slow I took Mike to a creek I like for snook and as soon as we got there we see a tarpon roll. Nice! I set up Mike with a good angle to cast to the tarpon and he made a few pinpoint casts until the fish saw his fly. Then, a silver flash, the line comes tight and there’s tarpon 3’ in the air. Yes! After a bunch of jumps and some give and take Mike had his first tarpon in the boat. Not long after another tarpon rolls and the process repeats itself except this time the tarpon won after the 4th jump. Once the incoming tide started the bonefish and tarpon started to move but it was tough getting a fly to them as they were either just out of casting distance or staying deep and they would blow out as we moved over them. But, Mike did get some shots at another tarpon that ate twice but missed getting hooked twice. That’s tarpon for you! Time for this 12 year old to retire

The bulk of the fish in the lake are all congregated around large groups of shiners and shad in open water, feeding up for the upcoming spawn in the winter. Finding the bait is the key to staying on good fish all day. They’re all congregated together right now, the big fish and the little. So once you find a group of fish you have to just keep catching them and you’ll pick off the big ones. Some bass have begun to move shallower in certain areas but the bulk of the bass are all still offshore on hydrilla, eel grass, and on the outside kissimmee grass edges. Double up on the lake For artificials, topwater lures can be used to catch fish in areas where they are actively schooling and chasing bait. But the bulk of the fish are being caught off of jerkbaits and flukes

Just imagine being in your 40’s or 50’s and talking to someone about how you’ve been bonefishing a bunch of times but never caught any bonefish and how’s it’s been a bucket list fish for years. Now imagine while you’re having this conversation a 12 year old overhears your conversation and innocently chimes in with “Oh, I’ve caught bonefish before, two big ones two while it was windy and rainy. people who were here to watch the Miami Hurricanes play Virginia Tech and the weather was not in their favor. Yes, it was blowing 20-25 MPH and it was rainy and we got rained on several times. But, they both caught bonefish including Matt’s first and a solid 12 pound bonefish at that. Wow, these guys really killed it. We had to head back to the

Marathon/Florida Keys Southeast Coast marina to wait out a nasty cell that was moving through and afterwards we hit another spot for other species but we didn’t produce anything in the last 20 minutes we had in the trip. Double Header on a Sunday Sundays is the busiest boating day of the week and I don’t like running two trips on a Sunday but the weather was chilly so I figured it would keep most boaters away and it did. In the morning I had Dave from Idaho and he wanted to try bonefishing. I set up on one of my favorite outgoing tide spots around Key Biscayne and enjoyed the weather, the conversations with Dave and we waited for fish to move through. Just as I told Dave we would change spots in a few minutes a bonefish moves in and Dave hooks up landing his first bonefish. Nice! Things got slow so we wrapped it up catching jacks on every cast. My afternoon trip was with Mark from MD and he also wanted to catch bonefish. The bay was largely empty still with all my bonefish spots open with no one around. Cool! But, they all proved slow except one that had a school of big bonefish move through but not eat. Then Mark asks if there are jacks round. “Well, there are!”. I took him to the morning jack spot and there he caught a bunch of jacks and yellow jacks, the yellow jacks were a nice surprise.

My brother, Joey Grassett from Seaford, DE, visited for a few days and we fished a variety of options from shallow and deep flats to the coastal gulf. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2021 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. CLEARWATER COAST GUARD AUXILIARY TEACHING BOATING SAFETY CLASSES ONLINE - 2022 - A New Way to Learn … A New Crop of Safe Boaters. With the advent of COVID-19, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was advised to discontinue in-person classes for the safety of the instructors and students. The good news is that the State of Florida (FWC) and the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved the Coast Guard Auxiliary to conduct online classes. These classes are not your standard
webinar sessions where the students sit at their computers and are lectured at. And they’re not animated cartoon sessions where you have to keep pressing enter to get to the next topic. Classes are $40 per student and include the books, supplemental materials and course completion certificates. The classes being offered by the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary are conducted on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. In addition, because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! The boating safety class is also a requirement for many boaters in Florida. In the Sunshine State, anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, must successfully complete a boater safety course approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in order to operate any boat powered by more than 10 horsepower, and they are required to carry their boater education card with them when out on the water along with picture ID.
