he popular “Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing!” University will conduct a freshwater fishing seminar with guided fishing on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Bass Pro Shops, Dania Beach, FL from 9 am to 3 pm. Hosted by the nonprofit Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing Foundation, the educational event offers classroom instruction, conservation, handson fishing activities, networking, a guided fishing experience from land for bass and other species as well as gifts. The featured speaker is Capt. Brian Leibowitz. Perfect for women, men and teens who want to learn techniques for targeting Peacock Bass and other freshwater species, the program offers rod and reel basics, lure usage, casting techniques, fish retrieval, fish release, strategy and conservation, followed by hands-on fishing skill practice for rod rigging, spin casting, releasing, fish fighting techniques and more. After lunch, there will be an all-release fishing experience from the shore of a private lake known for its elusive peacock bass, as well as networking. Equipment and bait are provided. Godfrey Announces New Layouts for Legendary Sanpan Pontoons

Godfrey Pontoon Boats introduced the first allaluminum pontoon boat, Sanpan, at the Chicago Boat Show in 1958. It continues to raise the bar with a newly redesigned, first-class interior, with enhanced convenience throughout and industryleading materials. The Sanpan models are the pinnacle of luxury and showcase amenities for almost any on-the-water activity. The entire Sanpan lineup was redesigned with dynamic styling and undeniable luxury. New vinyl color options with eyecatching accent colors are made out of smooth Simtex vinyl for exceptional durability, UV resistance and strength for a sleek aesthetic. To add to the luxury of the boating experience, the perfectly sculpted deluxe captain and co-captain chairs deliver all-day comfort for cruising, relaxing, or simply sharing the moment. They have adjustable pedestals with an elevated helm seat that provides a commanding view for better situational awareness. The upgraded standard Garmin® touchscreen control center is

The fishfinder and chartplotter provide the captain with navigation information, boat speed and engine RPMs. It also allows users to control the RGB lighting throughout the entire boat, including in cupholders and underwater lighting and the Fusion® Platinum LEDlit speakers. Programmable soft-touch buttons enable owners to create onetouch activation of their most-used gauge, lighting and accessory combinations. Even the simplest of details have been re-imagined. There is a nonskid inductive charging pad at the helm, and throughout the boat, there are USB/USB-C charging ports to keep mobile devices at full power. Lemon and Herb Baked Florida Mullet Ingredients 4 (6 ounce) Florida Mullet fillets ½ cup Florida bell pepper, diced small ½ cup Florida dry white wine 1 lemon, thinly sliced 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped fine ½ teaspoon fresh basil, chopped fine 1 teaspoon fresh rosemary, chopped fine 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped fine ½ onion, thinly sliced Sea salt & fresh ground pepper, to taste
Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Chop all of the fresh herbs and combine into a small bowl (reserve one tablespoon for garnish). Season both sides of the fillets with salt and pepper. Place the fillets in a single layer into a buttered or greased baking dish, and drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice. Add the fresh herbs, thinly sliced onion, diced red pepper, and lemon slices on top of each fillet. Drizzle with the white wine, and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the fish flakes easily with a fork. Sprinkle with the reserved fresh herbs and serve warm.

ho needs a life raft? Chances are, you do if you’re planning to do coastal or blue water passage making. It’s an insurance item that you hope you don’t need and don’t want to spend much money on but don’t get tempted to go cheap, or worse, without. A life raft serves as a floating platform to keep you out of the water in case your primary vessel sinks or catches fire. Some people choose to forgo a life raft and opt instead to use their dinghy or inflatable as a secondary source of buoyancy in case of disaster. These may work on lakes, rivers and in near-coastal areas where rescue may be imminent. They will allow you to stay out of the water to avoid hypothermia and possible shark attack, and they’re bigger targets in the water than your head, so they increase your chances of being seen and rescued. However, your tender isn’t likely to do the job on the open ocean in large waves and high winds and that’s where a life raft comes in. Life raft basics Recreational life rafts generally have a four, six or eight-person capacity. They come packed in either a fiberglass canister that is mounted on a cradle on deck or in a soft-sided valise so it can be stored in a locker or below. Rafts are automatically deployed with a compressed gas cylinder. Cost depends on size and type but usually ranges $2,000-$6,000. Weight (typically 30-80 pounds for a valise and upwards of 170 pounds for canister versions) is a key
issue especially for rafts that will have to be moved and thrown off the boat manually.

If deck space is limited, choose a valise life raft that can be stored below deck.
Transoceanic life rafts are designed for more serious conditions and are more ruggedly built with additional and larger ballast bags and selfrighting inflating canopies. They have an extensive equipment list including a drogue (sea anchor) to help with stability and to minimize drift away from your originally reported position. These rafts usually come with insulated inflatable floors for thermal protection and more comprehensive inspection ports so you can spot a rescue vessel on the horizon. Choosing a life raft Your choice of life raft will depend on several factors: • Assess your cruising area and your overall needs. If you normally boat on small bodies of water in an open boat, a dinghy or inflatable may suffice. If you’re cruising or racing within a few miles of shore, consider a coastal life raft. They’re smaller and less expensive but also designed for more benign
• Don’t oversize. If you normally boat as a couple with occasional guests, get a four-person raft. USCG-approved rafts should have a minimum of four square feet per person, which isn’t much. Although it’s true that tempers flare when you can’t stretch out and get rest, bigger isn’t always better. You want to have a good weight/square foot ratio to keep the raft from capsizing in high winds and waves. Also, a tight fit ensures the preservation of body heat.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. With the advent of COVID-19, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was advised to discontinue in-person classes for the safety of the instructors and students. The good news is that the State of Florida (FWC) and the National Association of Boating
Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved the Coast Guard Auxiliary to conduct online classes. These classes are not your standard webinar sessions where the students sit at their computers and are lectured at. And they’re not animated cartoon sessions where you have to keep pressing enter to get to the next topic. Classes are $40 per student and include the books, supplemental materials and course completion certificates. The classes being offered by the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary are conducted on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. In addition, because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! The boating safety class is also a requirement for many boaters in Florida. Captain’sCorner with Captain Ray Markham The New Year brought some mixed weather situations with a cold front and some windy days. While we’re getting into the heart of winter, it doesn’t appear that we have any severe weather ahead. Weather predictions can be wrong, so always monitor the weather channel when on the water and plan accordingly. OFFSHORE/ NEARSHORE Drift fishing hard bottom areas for red grouper where rock bottom meets sand will produce some fish and allow you to cover a lot of area. Save the spots that produce, but like all fish, they can move and be gone the next time you’re out. Red grouper season reopened last Saturday. Anglers bottom dropping in nearshore waters between 70-and 100-foot depths were rewarded with some nice fish. Mangrove, vermilion, and lane snapper were still actively feeding in that range as well. Hogfish can be caught begging in about 40feet of water and are still in the catch along with grunts, porgies, and an occasional Spanish or king mackerel. The Egmont Key Ship’s Channel has been producing a few macks. If you’re fishing that area on either side of the channel, be prepared for an early arrival of some cobia. A few cobia were reported being caught over the past couple of weeks in that area. Target buoys , channel markers, and stone crab traps. While you’re at it, be ready to toss a bait to tripletail that remain in the area and along the beaches and inside some of the bays. Deepwater fishing between 150 and 250-feet can produce some big red grouper along with some scamp grouper. Be prepared for some blackfin tuna and even some dolphin. Both were caught over the past week. INSHORE The past couple of weeks have seen snook feeding heavily up rivers and on

Extremely unseasonably warm weather has been the major headline as of late and it’s because of this warmer weather that our shallow water Grouper fishing has continued to be off the charts in water depths ranging from 5-7ft. Casting lipped plugs has been a huge success this season and when the conditions are right we have actually been able to witness a numerous amount of our strikes. That’s Right Folks!!! Look for residential canals around the east side of Tampa Bay to produce some nice fish as well as Cockroach Bay. Cockroach has also been a mecca for redfish in the Tampa Bay area. Anglers fishing from Bishop’s Harbor south to the Manatee River are also seeing some good action with snook and reds. Sand bars near Joe Bay, Anna Maria, Pass-A-Grille, and Fort Desoto have seen some pompano action for anglers chucking both DOA root beer colored TerrorEyz and Yellow Doc’s Goofy Jigs with pink teasers.

CAL Jigs with Shad tails are accounting for an occasional redfish, some trout, and bluefish that round out most trips in that area. Tripletail have been on swim buoys along the beaches.

These exhilarating tournament fishing contests attract entrants the same way sailfish are drawn to ballyhoo. Big jack crevalle and loads of ladyfish have been running through various areas on the flats, devouring everything in their paths. While most anglers might avoid them, jacks are extremely hard fighters for their size, and many fly anglers enjoy the fight and aerobatic display that ladyfish provide. Ladyfish will fray lines with their rough mouths, so a trace of a 30-pound leader will help prevent break-offs.
FRESHWATER Regardless of how cold it is, anglers are still catching specks (aka crappie). Most will agree that the dead mid of winter produces the best catches since these fish school together and spawn during this time. Look for them in deep holes ranging from 6 to 10-feet deep. Lake Manatee down in Bradenton has been producing some nice specks as well as bass and bluegill. Bass are hammering surface poppers and sliders. Specks are being caught on small Clouser Minnows tied on #8 hooks using sinking or sink tip lines. For all anglers, and especially fly anglers, the tug is the drug.
Much of the Tampa Bay area, and particularly the west side of the bay, still is not producing many trout. Areas of Sarasota bay a r e seeing a few larger trout in the 17-to 20inch range being caught but a few smaller fish

Now that the New Year is here, and our shallow water Grouper season comes to a close, anglers will still have plenty of options to choose from in the shallows as Redfish, Speckled Trout, Sheepshead, and Snook will all be top targets going forward. As temperatures continue to cool Redfish especially will light up around mangrove edges and oyster flats. Sight fishing these bronze bruisers is ideal this time of year especially when the tides are extremely low with sunny conditions. Targeting tailing fish is some of the most fun fishing our area has to offer throughout the year and the months from JanuaryMarch are Prime Time for giving it a shot. If you have never targeted tailing Redfish in ankle deep water before you don’t know what your missing. A tailing fish is a feeding fish and the soft presentation of a live shrimp or shrimp pattern fly is all that’s needed for an immediate strike. The beauty of poling these same shallow flats is that often we come into contact with other species as well like the Snook and

West Florida Sheepshead, both of which will readily take the same live shrimp or fly. As aggressive as Snook are throughout the year often during the winter months these fish will lazily cruise the shallows in search of easy meals. Often Snook will only eat sporadically throughout a day as they do not want to exert too much energy in colder conditions. To combat this unique feeding phase throwing larger baits, flies and lures is advised as one big meal requires exerting less energy than eating numerous little meals. Large Shrimp, Pinfish, Twitchbaits, and EP Baitfish flies are sure to excite any hungry Snook patrolling the Nature Coast this time of year. With so much to be thankful for in 2021 lets not forget the people whom impacted our lives last year. We only have one life to live, why not work towards enjoying every day we have together. Orlando bass fishing We continue to be averaging catching 20- 30 on our 4 hour trips, and on our longer trips some days well over 40 bass on live bait! But with the recent cold fronts the artificial bite has become inconsistent. So we recommend going with the live bait to get the most out of your day right now.

The bulk of the fish in the lake are all congregated around large groups of shiners and shad in open water, feeding up for the upcoming spawn in the winter. Finding the bait is the key to staying on good fish all day. They’re all congregated together right now, the big fish and the little. So once you find a group of fish you have to just keep catching them and you’ll pick off the big ones. Some bass have begun to move shallower in certain areas but the bulk of the bass are all still offshore on hydrilla, eel grass, and on the outside kissimmee grass edges. Double up on the lake

The weather has been absolutely perfect and the deep sea fishing in fort Lauderdale has had it’s moments but has been erratic giving us a strong day with a number of fish and other days with Sailfish and then presenting us and the entire fleet with a day that despite having near perfect fishing conditions and fine weather to boot is a very difficult day. As we all are aware such is fishing and we take pleasure in large and small fish and large and lesser numbers, but a reasonable amount of cooperation from the fish is always appreciated by anglers and crew alike. That said we have had some good fish. But again, not every day. Enjoy the photos of anglers. Big fish, small fish, lots of
schooling and chasing bait. But the bulk of the fish are being caught off of jerkbaits and flukes as they best resemble the bait that they are chasing right now. Rattletraps have been working in these areas also, along with speedworms and chatterbaits swam through thicker grass. The bass fishing on Lake Toho continues to remain consistently good as it has throughout this whole year! And this winter peak season is setting up to be an absolute extravaganza. And that may be the first time I’ve ever used that word! So if you’re looking to do some bass fishing down in Orlando Florida this winter, now’s the time to book because January, February, and March is our busiest time of year and days book up fast! Very comfortable days now as what seems to be the entire rest of the country has poor if not horrible weather this week. We have had some very nice fish but we have also struggled with catches on some charters. This is not unusual for this time of year and the roller coaster ride of actual catches will continue to fluctuate for a while. We very much look forward to frontal systems here in South Florida as often a fishing charter in Ft. Lauderdale is tied closely to the passing frontal systems. The flip side of fishing in Ft.
