Mercury Racing Inks Sponsorship with 1000 Islands Poker Run July Charity Event to Attract More Than 100 Performance Boats

OND DU LAC, Wis. (March 14, 2022) – Mercury Racing will be a new Diamond Sponsor of the 2022 1000 Islands International Charity Poker Run. The event is scheduled for July 14-16 in Clayton, N .Y. Mercury Racing will be on hand with its Tour Truck and other product displays and will donate an item for the charity auction. “In just a few years the 1000 Island run has become one of the most talked-about events of the season,” said Steve Miller, Mercury Racing director of customer experience. “It’s a beautiful area and the water and the course give owners a chance to let these performance boats stretch their legs. At the end of the weekend, the goal is supporting these great charities and Mercury Racing is delighted to have an opportunity to support the event.” The 1000 Islands International Charity Poker Run was founded in 2016 as a non-profit with the goal of raising funds for Make-
A-Wish Foundation of Central New York, the River Community Wellness Program at River Hospital, and other local nonprofit organizations. The event was not held in 2020 or 2021 due to pandemic restrictions but donated $17,000 in 2021 through its dedicated sponsors and raised more than $100,000 in 2019. “Getting involved with Make-AWish has made us all grateful and humble for the good fortune we have in our lives,” said Ken Lalonde, president of the 1000 Islands Poker Run. “River Community Wellness provides mental health programs for the community, including veterans and service personnel affiliated with Fort Drum. The endorsement of the event by Mercury Racing, a leader in this performance segment, is very important to us.” Lalonde also has commitments from leading performance boat manufacturers Mystic Powerboats, MTI and Nor-Tech Boats.
The new Harbor Hotel in Clayton, directly adjacent to the municipal docks, is event headquarters. The schedule includes a boat street show on Thursday, Make-A-Wish rides on Friday, the poker run on Saturday, and a gala banquet on Saturday evening. The event draws 100 to 120 boats with four stops on the150-mile scenic Saint Lawrence River. Registration for the 2022 event is now open at 1000 Island Run.

Florida Alligator Stir-Fry Ingredients
1 pound Florida alligator nuggets, cut uniformly 1 Florida sweet pepper, seeds removed & sliced thin 1 small Florida zucchini, sliced thin 1 small Florida yellow squash, sliced thin 1 small onion, sliced thin 1 medium carrot, peeled and sliced thin 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger 4 to 6 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped fine 3 eggs 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 cups panko (Japanese breadcrumbs) 1 tablespoon oil, for cooking 2 tablespoons sesame seeds, toasted 3 tablespoons all-purpose seafood seasoning Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste Stir-fry sauce ¾ cup Florida orange juice 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon sesame oil
Directions:
In a small saucepot over medium heat, add orange juice, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, brown sugar, sesame oil, ginger and orange zest. Bring ingredients to a boil. In a small bowl, combine cornstarch and 3 tablespoons of cold water. Whisk the cornstarch and water mixture until combined. Slowly whisk the cornstarch mixture into the sauce mixture. Continue to whisk until the sauce has thickened. Bring to a slight boil, remove from heat and let cool.

Add oil to deep fryer and preheat to 350-375 degrees. Beat eggs and ¼ cup water to create egg mixture. Set up bread station in three separate bowls as follows: egg mixture, flour, and panko. Season each with salt and pepper. Add 1 ½ tablespoons all-purpose seafood seasoning to flour and panko. Depending on the size of your fryer, divide nuggets into batches. Coat first batch in egg mixture and let drain slightly. Next, dip wet nuggets into seasoned flour mixture;

gently shake to remove any excess flour. Return nuggets to the egg mixture and coat; drain excess. Lastly, toss wet, coated nuggets in panko to evenly coat; gently shake to remove excess panko. Fry alligator nuggets for 2 to 3 minutes until internal temperature reaches 160 degrees. Drain onto pan lined with paper towels. Repeat for additional batches. Preheat a large sauté pan or wok over medium-high heat. Add the cooking oil to the preheated pan. Carefully add the onion, squash, carrot and zucchini. Season vegetables lightly with salt and pepper. Cook vegetables for about two minutes trying to maintain the crispiness of the vegetables. Add the fresh ginger and garlic to the cooking vegetables. Add the crispy fried alligator to the sauté pan and toss to combine. Remove the alligator stir fry from the heat and serve over a warm bed of rice. Drizzle each plate with the homemade stir fry sauce. Garnish each finished dish with sesame seeds.

PRINGFIELD, Va., March 17, 2022 – Gas prices are up. What can boaters do to prepare for a summer of boating? The 800,000plus member Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) has 21 fuel-saving tips boaters can do to help save on fuel and still enjoy a fulfilling season on the water. While some of these techniques may sound obvious, there may be some you never considered. Before Heading Out: • Tune your engine now. If it’s not able to reach WOT — or overruns it — you’ve got the wrong prop and you’re not getting the most bang for your fuel buck. • Check for propeller damage throughout the season. A dinged or broken propeller will hurt your fuel economy, so regularly inspect yours and replace it if it’s damaged. • Keep the prop clean. Barnacles and other growth can attach to the propeller, which will slow it down and impact fuel economy. • Keep a slick hull. For boats that spend a lot time in the water, barnacles or stuck-on grass can create drag on the hull and make the engine work

Modern engines are fuel injected, so when you start them, they’re ready to go in a minute or two. • A note on safety: Selfrefueling your boat while it’s in the slip at a marina with portable containers may be prohibited due to fire hazard or potential for a spill, and depending on the volume of fuel needed for a fill-up may be impractical. Captain’sCorner with Captain Sergio Atanes Weedon Island Little History/Little Fishing - Little History: Weedon Island preserve to most of us we think of as a fishing mecca, where snook, redfish, trout call home all year round. But Weedon Island is more than that it has a rich history which should be explored both by land and sea. Located along the shores of Tampa Bay with aquatic and ecosystems and over 3,700 acres offers a chance to view firsthand all kinds of plants and animals. Weedon Island first inhabitants were the Manasota people they used the natural resources around them for use of their basic needs. Over the years the island changed hands many times from the Indians who first occupied. Lorenzo D. Ross, Captain W. B. Henderson who gave the island to his daughter as wedding present which married Doctor Leslie Weedon thus the name, we know it today. On October 5, 1929, construction was stared on Weedon Island airport serving Tampa to St. Peterburg. During World War II the U.S. Government leased the airport from Ludwig and Sky Harbor for a training site for Army and Navy pilots. Weedon Island fishing pier started as a wooden bridge which linked Weedon Island to St. Petersburg. The rest is history, I recommend you take some time to visit this beautiful island and its Cultural and Natural History Center I spent hours walking through the many marked trails. Thanks to volunteers to gave me a insight into its past and present. Little Fishing: April is great month for catching snook, redfish in Tampa Bay; although redfish and snook are yearlong residents of the bay the large breeders prefer the mangrove shoreline. April water temperatures are
a welcome relief after the long winter months and a turn on for the big bruisers. A short trip to catch bait at my secret spot and from there it was off to Weedon Island, one of my favorite spots forsnook and redfish this time of year. Once we reached the no motor zone, I lowered the trolling motor and with a push of a button 112-pounds of thrust came to life propelling my Pathfinder Bay boat in the direction of Weedon Island. Many islands and keys in Tampa Bay are protected areas and one must use either a trolling motor or a push pole so beware and obey the rules FWC keeps a good eye on these areas. We slowly worked our way to the southeast point of the key and here we anchored and waited for the school to appear. Patience is important since the school can appear in a moment’s notice. We were prepared for action; 1 rod with live pinfish suspended just below the surface of the water using 4-Horsemen float the other one with greenbacks free lined just beyond our float and one with cut threadfin sardine 2/0 Kahle hook using a small split shot to keep the cut bait on the bottom. The sun’s rays were slowly breaking into the crystal-clearwater and you could see movements of small pinfish darting in and out of the grass and mullet starting to jump. I could tell by my clients look they were ready for action, and so was I. Just beyond our reach we could see a small wake as if a small boat had buzzed by. We looked at each other and without a word prepared for an attack. The reds were coming; Doug drew first blood and within a split second mine was next. Three hook
with Captain Dylan Hubbard Nearshore Fishing Report Mackerel action is back to the near shore waters in pretty good concentrations, plus we have seen some nice kingfish or king mackerel caught as well. However, they are not super thick yet. The mackerel are the most prolific starting around 1525ft up to around 40ft of water hugging the beaches around artificial reefs, wrecks, and anywhere that will hold bait including some bigger rock piles and ledges. The skyway shipping channel is a great place to look for them along with those public artificial wrecks and reefs that are located from 3-9 miles along the coast. You can find most of those on most any chart or in your typical plotter, but if you don’t have them check out this link -> http://www.pinellascounty. org/reef/pdf/reef-map.pdf those will get you in the area and most of these areas are very large and sprawling and you can troll around them to find more structure, bait and fish. I suggest using around a number 1 or number 2 planner with about 15-18ft of 40lb mono behind it to a 4-6 inch drone spoon. You want to make sure to have a snap swivel on the back of the planner, and often people will put one on the front too. This will prevent your main line from getting spun up as that spoon spins in the water. To set the planner out, you just throw in the spoon let it pull tight, then put the planner over with your drag set and once it touches the top of the water keep your rod tip up and let it skip back keeping pressure on the reel with your thumb. Once its in the area you want, quickly lower your rod tip and it should set, if not pull up your tip as much as you can and whip some slack at the planner and then it should set. This will apply steady pressure and start to really pull, especially the

further back it goes the deeper it will pull your spoon. If your using braid it goes even deeper. You want your drag just tight enough to stop it from being pulled out of the reel by the tension of the planner. You should be able to put that rod in a rod holder and barely pull the line with one finger to get the drag to pull. Then put on the clicker and your set. Hit the other opposite corner and repeat this with another rod but remember to stagger this one 20-30ft shorter or further than the first planner to avoid them from tangling as you make slow and soft turns around the structure you are trolling. Once you get a hit the planner will trip and bring the fish to the surface, and you will see it start to skip on the water behind the boat. Watch your rod tips, you will know you get a hit when it comes nearly slack showing the planner was tripped. Hogfish action is steady near shore around that 40-80ft range. They slowed a bit for us, but we are hoping that had more to do with the weather than anything else. We are unfortunately experiencing some tougher conditions that make it more difficult to get out there to the hogfish, and then when we are able that water is murkier and the fishing has been a little tougher, but we are getting little weather windows that allow us a good shot at them. Like this past week we saw a great bite Tuesday and then again Thursday and both of those days were when we finally had a little reprieve from the more turbulent weather. Black seabass have been biting well for us around that 30-90ft area lately too. We are seeing them on shrimp, squid and even cut threadfin but mostly

West Central Florida Southwest Coast ups and no one around to see it. We had them all to ourselves for over 3 hours. We battled reds, winning some fights and losing others. Large schools of redswill congregate around mangrove islands; some schools are so large they form a red wave as they push through the shallow waters of the flats. My favorite baits for these large bruisers are 3–5-inch pinfish, cut fresh dead threadfin sardine and dollar size pass crabs. Casting distance is a must and medium tackle works best. I prefer to use 15- pound test braided line, 7.6 medium action fast taper rod and 3000 to 3500 reels for best casting distance. Reds in shallow waters will spook easily and the stealth system works best; this means keeping a safe distance from the school and being quiet. Remember, sound travels 7 times faster through water and the slightest noise can break up schooling fish. I prefer to fish the start of an outgoing tide for reds, because as the tide drops, they are forced into the cuts and potholes around the mangrove island creating a private casting pond for my clients. First, get there early ahead of the tide change. I have sat and waited for an hour for fish to move in and it has been well worth it. While other boats are trying to follow the fish, let the fish come to you. Never cast into a school of fish. Always cast ahead of them and let them come toward your bait. On days with strong currents, I will use a float and let the current drift my bait towards the fish. My clients had a great day and one they will never forget.

West Central Florida on live shrimp. The average size has been large and it’s great to see them in such good numbers right now. We are hoping this continues as they are great eating smaller fish to add to the catch. Lane snapper have been a little more sporadic but this past week we found them biting well in good numbers out towards the deeper end of our near shore waters. Once we got closer to that 100ft mark we were seeing them biting better and better. Definitely recommend targeting them closer to around 70ft of water or more using squid or shrimp. Mangrove snapper are around near shore and we are seeing some big ones occasionally near shore too. Especially deeper, like the lane snapper, we are seeing more and more of those mangrove snapper. They love those live shrimp and smaller chunks of the threadfin on the double snell rigs. Using that lighter floro leader is important too around 30-40lb test. Red grouper action has been spotty near shore. We are seeing a few of them here and there but not until we are deep and nearing that offshore range beyond 20 miles and beyond 100ft, but just inside the deepest near shore waters where we are picking a few up using pinfish, squid strips, and threadfins whole with just the tails cut. SPORTFISHING REPORT: MAHI ON THE MARCH The large Mahi Mahi are here to pounce on the large schools of baits that return to South Florida in the Spring. The Spring Mahi Mahi tend to be some of the biggest fish of the year so now is the time to join us to catch the Mahi of your dreams. We’re catching these big Mahi on a mix of live baits and trolled baits such as artificials and strip baits trolled in 200 to 500 feet of water. MUCHO WAHOOS The Early Spring Wahoo bite continues the late winter momentum! These toothy, striped torpedoes have been so plentiful and big that our top-notch tackle can barely keep up! These fish can turn your reel into molten lava if you’re not careful. Fortunately, our Lady Pamela Sportfishing crews are well-versed with all things Wahoo and stay in control. Nobody can put you on this bite like Lady Pamela Sportfishing! Just like February/March, Wahoos have been crushing slow-trolled live “bullet” Bonitos anywhere from 150 to 400 feet of water, along the clean water edges. The Wahoos have also responded well to our strip baits trolled below the surface on planers and Islanders rigged with horse ballyhoo in both the blue/white and red/black color
The dolphin have already begun to show up in earnest, but look forward to seeing our largest fish this time of year. Lots of mahi in the 20- to 40-pound range migrate through. The seas can be a bit challenging, so be mindful and pick your day. Look for birds – primarily frigates, not terns – on the water surface. They will pinpoint the location of larger dolphin. While one strategy is to troll lures near the frigates, we recommend employing a skirted Bionic ballyhoo. An option is to visually spot the fish yourself and toss a live bait directly in front of it. Pilchards, goggle eyes and pinfish work well. Persistence pays to get the fish to eat. Continue trying as long as you can see the fish on the surface. Should you lose sight of it, try trolling in ever-widening circles from where you first saw it. Sometimes these big fish just won’t eat, so it’s best to move on to the next frigate bird on the surface.

DAYTIME SWORDFISHING At Lady Pamela Sportfishing, we also offer specialty Daytime Swordfishing charters and Deep Dropping charters for various deep-water species like tilefish, snappers and groupers! STEADY SAILFISH Recent cold fronts (cold for us down here) have brought windy conditions, which are perfect for Sailfishing. The Sailfish are frisky and up on the reefs showering up schools of Ballyhoo. Our clients have been putting up big numbers of Sailfish catches and releases as our Fleet focuses almost exclusively on fishing live baits underneath our fishing kites. We really love to show our clients the art of Kite fishing. Kite fishing is a truly amazing and engaging experience as you get to see the Sailfish AS THEY EAT the bait. Nothing gets the blood pumping like watching a double- or triple-header Sailfish bite up on the surface. We can fish up to three (3) live baits per kite, with at least two (2) kites up at any one time. We’re fishing between 60 and 250 feet of water.
There are also plenty of blackfin tuna offshore at the Marathon humps. Sharks tend to be heavy this time of year, so landing larger blackfins of 20 pounds or greater can be an effort in futility. The pelagic action continues on the reef as this is peak time for big numbers of sailfish, another fishery that
anglers giggling. We’re also catching the occasional Yellowfin Tuna like this one! We’ve been finding the Blackfins and Bonitos in 70 to 150 feet of water and they are eating live Goggle Eyes and Pilchards as well as trolled strips and feathers. Join us to get in on this tasty action! KING MACKEREL AND BARRACUDAS King Mackerel (‘Kingfish”) and Barracuda continue to sharpen their teeth up on the reef. Like Sailfish, Kingfish absolutely love to crush a live bait suspended beneath our kites. Kingfish have teeth that are more like surgical scalpels and they fight hard, which is why we call them “smokers” – they will smoke your drag on scorching runs once they’re hooked. We have to fish wire leaders to make sure we don’t miss these acrobatic bites. The Barracuda are lurking on the reefs to ambush the unsuspecting baits as well. AMAZING SHARK FISHING The shark fishing has been too incredible to describe here. We’ve been catching all of the All-Star shark species: Great Whites, Makos, Hammerheads, Bull Sharks, Thresher Sharks and many more! Captain Quint would be proud!
When there is not enough wind to keep the kites in the air, we can also slow troll live baits such as Ballyhoo and Goggle Eyes as well as troll our specially-crafted mullet strips. When we’re trolling live Ballyhoo, the occasional White Marlin shows up in the spread, just to make life REALLY interesting.
GIANT AMBERJACKS We’ve also been on a steady Amberjack bite over the wrecks and these “reef donkeys” are huge! Amberjacks NEVER give up and are absolute sluggers! If you want to get into a tug-of-war, give us a call to get out and tangle with these juggernauts!

with Captain Chris Johnson When you think of springtime fishing in Marathon, two species come to mind: dolphin (mahi mahi) and tarpon. But, there’s also plenty of action for a wide variety of game and eating fish.

has had a banner season so already. The depth where you’ll find the sails ranges anywhere from right on the reef out to 200 feet. The key is to have good, blue water. The ideal is powder blue water pushed up against purple water. Waves of three to four feet create what is called “tailing,” which is just what you’d think. The sailfish tails stick out of the water as they surf down the surface of the wave. Just about any of the usual cast of sailfish baits work, including goggle eyes, pilchards, ballyhoo and cigar minnows. Much as you would with dolphin, pitch your baits in front of the fish. When they see it, typically they light up and attack it. It’s an incredible sight! This is a visual fishery, and it’s not unusual to see 50 sailfish on a day when conditions are perfect.
The permit are often schooled up off the top or very near the main wreckage and are in massive schools of 300 to 500 fish. The average size is 15 to 25 pounds, with some monsters pushing 40. A small, 2- to 3-inch blue crab fished on a jighead with 20-pound tackle will do the trick for you. Permit is a catch-and-release fishery, so be sure to release all fish unharmed as they are here to spawn. Yellowtails are the main event on the reef. The largest specimens can be found in 40 to 60 feet of water. Be sure to use copious amounts of Bionic chum, and any kind of small cut bait or shrimp will work as baits. Just ask your local tackle shop what’s working best in your area.
You may also find dolphin and cobia in the same areas mixed in with the sailfish, so be sure to keep a keen eye out. All the same live baits used for sailfish will attract their interest.
The tarpon are here in full force around the bridges. Marathon has three players when it comes to bridge fishing for tarpon: Long Key, Seven Mile and Bahia Honda. Baits and techniques vary bridge-to-bridge. Again, check with your local tackle shop.
On the wrecks, the bite for big amberjacks hits its peak as these fish are in the area to spawn. Fish in the 70- to 90-pound class are common.
Of course, if you really want to land big tarpon without wasting a lot of time and money, hire a local guide as we’re highly tuned in to this very specialized fishery.
The mutton snapper bite is also rapid as they, too, begin to gather to spawn later in May and June. Baits for the AJs and muttons are pinfish, pilchards and live ballyhoo.
There also plenty of big-fish action on light tackle with sharks round the shallower flats. For those desiring the ultimate shallow-water challenge, fishing for bonefish, permit and tarpon on the flats is hitting its stride right now.
On the artificial reefs off Marathon, we have an excellent permit fishery. This is another visual fishery, although best accomplished with cleaner water and calmer conditions than you want for sailfish.

Boaters. With the advent of COVID-19, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was advised to discontinue inperson classes for the safety of the instructors and students. The good news is that the State of Florida (FWC) and the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved the Coast Guard Auxiliary to conduct online classes. These classes are not your standard webinar sessions where the students sit at their computers and are lectured at. And they’re not animated cartoon sessions where you have to keep pressing enter to get to the next topic. Classes are $40 per student and include the books, supplemental materials and course completion certificates. The classes being offered by the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary are conducted on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. In addition, because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! The boating safety class is also a requirement for many boaters in Florida. In the Sunshine State, anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, must successfully complete a boater safety course approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in order to operate any boat powered by more than 10 horsepower, and they are required to carry their boater education card with them when out on the water along with picture ID.
