Ingredients 1 pound Florida blue crab meat ½ Florida bell pepper, diced fine 1 stalk celery, diced fine ¼ cup green onions, chopped ½ cup mayonnaise 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon Worcestershire 2-3 tablespoons softened unsalted butter, for cooking Several dashes hot sauce (optional) 1 tablespoon all-purpose seafood seasoning (your favorite) French bread (or your favorite) Directions: Combine all ingredients except for crab meat. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Gently fold in the crab meat, making sure not to break up any large pieces. Add ¾ cup crab salad to each sandwich and spread the softened butter on both pieces of bread. Using a waffle iron, panini press, or sauté pan, grill until golden brown on both sides. Serve warm.

Aquatic Scholar Eugenie Clark Honored with Forever Stamp
T
he U.S. Postal Service honored ichthyologist and oceanographer Eugenie Clark with a Forever stamp. The first-day-of-issue event was held at the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in Sarasota, FL in May. Affectionately known as the “Shark Lady,” pioneering marine biologist Eugenie Clark (1922-2015) spent her career working tirelessly to change public perception about sharks as well as to preserve marine environments around the world. A prolific scientist animated by an unyielding sense of curiosity, Clark conducted a series of groundbreaking experiments and carried out more than 200 expeditions across the globe. She demonstrated that lemon sharks could be trained to do complex tasks, disproved the notion that some shark species must keep swimming in order to survive, and debunked myths about sharks as vicious, fearsome creatures. She also made significant contributions to the study of hermaphroditism in fishes, discovered several fish species, and even found that one species naturally repels sharks.

Clark was widely respected for her research as well as for her eager embrace of new advances in diving technology, knowing that each development would bring her closer to the creatures she loved. A pioneer in the era when scuba emerged as a research tool, she later took more than 70 trips in high-tech submersibles, sometimes as deep as 12,000 feet beneath the ocean
surface — something that has still been done by only a small number of other marine biologists. An inspiration to scientists and laypeople alike, Clark left an extraordinary legacy. Her life and career blazed a trail for women marine biologists and continue to excite new generations of scientists and explorers. For her contributions to marine science, she received the Franklin L. Burr Award from the National Geographic Society and was honored posthumously by Congress in 2015. A species of dogfish shark newly discovered in the Gulf of Mexico was named Squalus clarkae in her honor in 2018. Growing up outside of Toledo, Ohio, she originally planned to pursue a law degree. Inspired by famous women designers that came before her, and embracing her love for cars and drawing, she returned to the University of Cincinnati for a design degree at the age of 25. An internship with Brunswick Boat Group brands Sea Ray and Boston Whaler led to her hiring in the summer of 2016 as part of the company’s design engineering team. “I was surprised to learn that a career in boat design existed and how closely connected it is to the automotive industry,” said McGinnis. “Designing a boat is an amazing career where you can make a huge impact in a short amount of time. I always thought Sea Ray was one of the best-looking boats on the water, and the SLX line was always one of my favorites. I am very excited to have had the opportunity to be a part of this team and grateful for the trust Brunswick placed in me and my colleagues.” Since joining Brunswick, both Fodor and McGinnis

Simple Tips for a Clean Outboard
W
hether it’s a single small outboard on the back of a runabout or quads on an offshore center console, it’s important to maintain engines in showroom-like condition. Keeping cowlings clean not only makes the entire boat look better, but adds to their overall resale value. Shurhold offers some Clean-N-Simple tips for helping outboards look their best. Unlike the deck and hull that are typically made of gelcoat, the engine cowling is likely painted and therefore softer than other onboard surfaces. It may also have 3D or printed graphics, so it needs to be cared for differently from the rest of the boat. The first step to detailing an outboard is a thorough washing with a quality boat soap such as Shurhold Brite Wash. Biodegradable and environmentally friendly, it won’t strip away any previously applied wax. The formula quickly emulsifies the dirt, grime, hard water and salt baked into the paint surface by engine heat. Using stiff-bristled brushes will leave small scratches in the paint that will then attract more dirt. It’s better to use a Soft or Extra Soft Hull Brush that will allow the soap to lift the sediment

Night Fishing: 10 Tips & Gear for First-Timers
F
or both freshwater fishing fans and saltwater fishing sharpies, night fishing is a great angling adventure. Many species of fish in both types of waterways feed best after the sun goes down, especially at certain times of year, and there are times when night fishing makes for nonstop action. If you’re intrigued by the idea of fishing in the dark, check out these tips and make sure to being this gear. We can’t promise you that you’ll catch fish, but we can promise that your chances of success will be vastly improved. Night Fishing Tips When you go fishing late into the night, the usual basic tips for catching more fish still apply; check out How to Fish: Fishing Tips for Beginners to make sure you have the basics down pat. Beyond all the normal items, however, there are a number of additional tips to keep in mind. Here are 10 of the best night fishing tips every angler should know. • Try fishing with bait, and live bait when possible. While it’s true that lures can still work at night, when it’s dark out most species of fish will depend on senses other than sight more than they will depend on their eyes — just like animals that live on land. Scent, taste, and vibrations are all keys they may home in on. So using live bait that triggers these senses is usually the best bet. • If you do want to try lures, stick with dark colors like black or purple. It may seem counter-intuitive, but these are most visible to the fish at night because they block light from above and create a silhouette in the dark. Also consider using lures with vibrating blades or rattles which can stimulate senses other
than sight. • Fish near artificial light. Artificial illumination created by lights on bridges, docks, or your boat, attracts baitfish and other small critters. Wherever they gather, the predators won’t be far behind. • Fish around the edges of artificial light, where it fades out into darkness. Often large predators will prowl around in the dark areas close to the light so they can dart in unannounced, to grab unwary baitfish swimming in lighted areas. • Fish under a full moon. The unusual amount of natural light provided by a full moon allows fish to feed better, and these wild critters are naturally attuned to the cycle of the moon. As it grows their nighttime activity levels naturally grow, too. And when it’s full, many species feed like gangbusters. • Don’t start when the sun goes down, then give up too quickly. Many species rest after the transition from sunset to full darkness. You’ll often experience a burst of action right at sunset, but then find that the fish seem to go dormant for an hour or so. Don’t mistake a period of inactivity for an absence of fish and go home, because quite often an area that seemed fruitless shortly after sunset comes alive an hour or two after full darkness sets in. • Fish all levels of the water column, but be prepared to deploy baits closer to the surface than you normally might during broad daylight. While it’s not true for each and every species, many types of fish tend to feed close to the surface when they’re trying to find a meal in the darkness because this is where the most natural light is available. • Consider fishing at anchor, since it simplifies
things and lets you focus on the fish. That’s not to say that trolling or drifting isn’t effective in the dark. It’s just that once you’re anchored up (see Anchoring a Boat: A Step-By-Step Guide) you won’t have to worry so much about running the boat in the darkness, where or what you might be drifting towards, or what the sea conditions and boat traffic may be like. That way, you can pay full attention to fooling those fish. • Consider choosing your fishing spot based not only on the fish but also on how protected the area is and how much boat traffic it gets. Again, this isn’t so much about the fish as it is about you, how comfortable you are being on the water after dark, and how focused you can remain on catching those finned critters. • For the very same reasons, be sure to read our post on Night Boating Tips. If you don’t feel comfortable and safe in the dark environment, you probably won’t catch much nor have a very good time. Night Fishing Gear Naturally, all the boating gear you need for being on the water after dark is in order. Make sure your running and anchor lights are working properly, that have a flashlight close at hand, and be prepared for the chilly temperatures than can creep in once the sun goes down. Beyond that, however, there are some additional items you’ll find particularly helpful when night fishing. • A fish-attracting underwater night-light can vastly improve the catch. These are often colored (green fluorescent or LED tube lights you lower into
the water are favored by many anglers) and can draw in hordes of sea life from baitfish to squid. In many cases you’ll also need a battery to power the light, although some small versions intended for freshwater use are self-contained. • Headlamps or other forms of hands-free illumination trumps flashlights for night fishing. They allow you to see what you’re doing while you use your fingers for tasks like tying knots and baiting hooks. • Cast or dip nets can be very helpful for collecting live baits that perfectly match the hatch after dark. In many different fisheries anglers will set out lights to attract baitfish, and then gather their bait on the spot. • Choose rods and reels that maximize sensitivity. Just like the fish, in the darkness you’ll need to utilize senses beyond your sight. Fishing with gear that allows you to detect bites via feel rather than vision can be advantageous. • Additional boating safety equipment is always good to have around, but this is never truer than in the darkness. Be sure everyone has a floatation device and a form of illumination, too. Many anglers who fish at night like to attach a waterproof strobe light or a cyalume glow stick to a belt loop or carabiner, so they have an emergency light source and can visually signal others if need be. Night fishing can be an exciting change of pace, and in many cases, can lead to a far better catch than fishing in broad daylight. So gear up properly, remember these tips, and get ready to have a an evening angling adventure that’s second to none.

No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. CLEARWATER COAST GUARD AUXILIARY TEACHING BOATING SAFETY CLASSES ONLINE - 2022 - A New Way to Learn … A New Crop of Safe Boaters. With the advent of COVID-19, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was advised to discontinue in-person classes for the safety of the instructors and students. The good news is that the State of Florida (FWC) and the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved the Coast Guard Auxiliary to conduct online classes. These classes are not your standard webinar sessions where the students sit at their computers and are lectured at. And they’re not animated cartoon sessions where
you have to keep pressing enter to get to the next topic. Classes are $40 per student and include the books, supplemental materials and course completion certificates. The classes being offered by the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary are conducted on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. In addition, because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! The boating safety class is also a requirement for many boaters in Florida. In the Sunshine State, anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, must successfully complete a boater safety course approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in order to operate any boat powered by more than 10 horsepower, and they are required to carry their boater education card with them when out on the water along with picture ID. Captain’sCorner with Captain Sergio Atanes A Summer Night Adventure Summer storms are upon us, temperatures arerising, andnighttime fishing is hot. Tampa residents are in for a treat. Night fishing has its rewards with cool breezes clear nights and tight lines. Summer brings an influx of game fish into upper TampaBay a short drive forTampa residents. Tarpon, snook, trout, red drum “redfish” and black drum just to name a few; Shore anglers can fish from NW side of Gandy Bridge rocks and Picnic Island Pier. Boat anglers can target Howard Franklin, Gandy Bridge and Courtney Campbell causeway both the large and smaller bridge. July and August are prime months for catching large redfish (sciaenops ocellatus). A close relative of black drum, this hard fighting gamester has the pulling power of a small freight train on the loose. Redfish can range from 1 pound to a world record of 94 pounds. This time of year, large redfish ranging is size from 8 to 10-pounds can be caught using their favorite meal blue crabs. Medium/Heavy tackle is recommended, I use my standard SRT rig of a 7-footOKUMAMedium/ Heavy action rod, OKUMA Azores 50reel and40pound FINSbraided line with double swivel 1 to 2 oz. sinker with 4-foot of 40-pound test Fluorocarbon leader tied to a 4/0 circle hook.
Large redfish hang out around most bridge pilings; I find those that are closer to shore to be the most productive. Call any of the local bait shops a few days ahead and reserve a dozen medium blue crabs. A crab can be cut in half and used as two baits. Remove the top cap, cut the legs off, and insert the hook through one leg socket and out the other. The other baits would be large live shrimp or silver dollar size pinfish, but blue crabs will always be my first choice. Another new entry over the years is underwater lighting for boats, they do work I have a pair of Shadow Caster multi color on my boat and it has increased my nighttime fishing by 50%. They are LED so electrical consumption is almost nothing I can run them for hours and my battery stays at the same voltage. Bridge anglers can drop their line straight down alongside the piling and hang on. Boaters have a more difficult task. You need to anchor under the bridge with the stern of the boat within 4 to 5 feet from the outmost piling. Boaters should be prepared for a quick release of their anchor when a large fish is hooked. A common tool used is a fender or float tied above the water line to the anchor line. When a large fish is hooked the anchor line is released. The current will drift the boat away from the bridge allowing the
with Captain Mark Ward Tarpon Fishing Naples, Marco Island, Southwest Florida It’s peak tarpon season right now and most of my trips are tarpon trips and I love it. There are great days, so so days and slow days but it’s a great challenge trying to figure tarpon out. There are many factors, such as what depth they’re going to be in, what bait they want to eat, what color to make the floats, what tides they like, how to position the boat etc. It’s like trying to figure out a complicated puzzle but a very rewarding challenge. The annual spring tarpon migration so far is consistent with past years. I like to fish for them off the beaches but we’re also catching some big fish in the backcountry and the passes. Some mornings they seem to be everywhere and other mornings very few fish. Tides play an important role and the fish tend to move best when the tides are moving either way. Sometimes tides too strong don’t allow us to present the bait correctly and sometimes if the tides are too slow not much is happening. That’s why when I promote tarpon trips throughout the year I try to pick good tides. Nothing is for sure but we try to optimize our chances. I don’t normally fish more than two anglers on tarpon trips but a situation arose where we had four anglers on my boat. I thought how do I make this work by keeping everybody fishing without getting tangled. The tide was running strong and moving our baits fairly quickly. Typically we look for tarpon rolling or head waking but that day it was choppy and very

difficult to see the fish so consequently hard to know where to put the baits. So I threw out four baits separated about 50’ each. After the lead bait would get horizontal to the boat I’d have everyone rotate rods. This way our baits would start in about 8.5’ of water and end up in about 10.5’ essentially covering the depths the tarpon prefer. We continuously kept rotating rods and It worked out well, I think we went three for five that day which was great considering the sketchy conditions, actually, 3-5 is great any day. I client recently asked me what’s a good day, I said: “if we see one it’s a good day, if we jump one is a really good day and if we land one it’s a great day”. Going forward tides will be slower early this coming week on the quarter moon but will quickly recover as we move towards the full moon on June 14. Peak tarpon time is now into early July. Fishing In Southwest Florida The southwest Florida region extends from Charlotte Harbor in the north to the famous Ten Thousand Islands in the south. It encompasses Charlotte, Lee, and Collier Counties. People come to this part of the state, one of the fastest growing areas in the country, for its favorable climate, abundance of natural areas, wildlife watching opportunities and, of course, because of the region’s legacy as a fishing hot spot. Southwest Florida has some of the best backwater fishing in the state. For the uninitiated, backwater fishing, or backcountry fishing, is angling in the extensive network of

angler to fight his catch. When finished return to the fender or float and retie. Nighttime fishing has many rewards don’t be surprised if you hook on to a tarpon, snook or a black drum while fishing for redfish around the bridges. The slot size for redfish is 18 to 27 inches and only one per angler per day so please obey the rules. Boat ramp for boaters-Salty Sol on Gandy Blvd. one mile west of West Shore Blvd. Bait shops-Gandy Bait & Tackle and Trapmans Bait & Tackle both located on Gandy Blvd. Docks with underwater lights are magnets for trout, snook and flounder. A ¼ oz jig head with live shrimp hook thru the tail can do magic on flounder and even some nice mangrove snappers.

Southwest Florida bays, mangrove islands and tidal creeks that permeate the region. There are thousands of miles of shoreline, countless oyster bars and acres of seagrass beds that attract an abundance of salt water fish. Roaming these waters are four of the state’s most sought after gamefish, the snook, redfish, spotted seatrout, and tarpon. Thousands of anglers come to southwest Florida each year for the chance at a grand slam, catching one individual of each species in one day. Perhaps the most significant factor contributing to the region’s excellent fishing reputation are the vast tracks of fresh and salt water wetlands protected by state and/ or federal laws. The Charlotte Harbor – Pine Island Sound area, one of the largest estuaries in Florida, has relatively clean water that supports extensive grass beds and stands of mangroves. Several large sections of this estuarine complex are designated as state aquatic preserves and there are strict regulations that protect the water quality and marine life in the system Rookery Bay, between Naples and Marco Island, and the waters from Marco Island into the upper part of the Ten Thousand Islands are also Aquatic Preserves. The upper part of the Ten Thousand Islands is slated to become a National Wildlife Refuge while the lower portion has been a part of Everglades National Park for many years.

Summer has begun but it’s been a wet one so far, lots of rain and the wind continues. Freshwater run off has stained our inshore waters, but it has cooled water temperatures.

The snook bite has been excellent near spillways and canals where runoff’s create moving water. Top water Rapala skitter walks, live baits and DOA Terror Eyz have been great choices. Snook are also gathering in local inlets as they prepare to spawn on the June full moon.
Last week brought our first tropical depression for palm beach area. Lots of rain not much wind. The rain caused lots of runoff in our ICW making the water dirty.
Tarpon action has been steady near channels where water is cleaner, temperature has been a key factor for the silver king. Run off water can cool temperatures fast, pushing tarpon to search for warmer waters. Live mullet and DOA Terror Eyz have been choice baits for my boat. Jacks and other predators like sharks, grouper, bluefish, lady fish and many other species are being caught by anglers. Freshwater the peacock bass continue to bed along shorelines creating great sight fishing. The clown knife are

The most consistent reef action tends to be the 30- to 60-foot depths plus the deeper wrecks. The yellowtails are in the 15- to 18-inch class, and the mangroves weigh anywhere from two pounds all the way up to eight to ten pounds. For the yellowtails and mangroves, large amounts of chum are required. This time of year, we begin using 25-pound blocks in chum nets with large holes, allowing large amounts of chum to escape, which holds their interest. Pair the frozen chum with a slop mixture of YellowtailUp and oats or chum balls made from ChumDrop, and you should have non-stop action. To attract the yellowtails, we drift small cut baits, such as ballyhoo, silversides or shrimp, back in the slick with 15-pound fluoro leaders and small, light wire hooks. The mangroves tend to hug the bottom more than the yellowtails. So, it’s imperative

Snook fishing was great near spillways and local inlets. Anglers had great success live baiting and using DOA C.A.L. 3” shad tail. Docks and seawalls are holding fish but many of them are small, big fish are on the move near inlets and beaches. Tarpon fishing continues to produce steady action for anglers. Other species like jacks and sharks can be found in the ICW and also along the beaches. Bait schools on the beaches have lured the predator fish in. As the conditions start to calm down on beaches, the bite will get better and better as other predator species join in on the fun crashing bait schools. your baits are on or near the bottom to get bit by the largest mangs. Chum balls with large chunks of ballyhoo or pinfish will get even the most finicky of the mangroves and muttons to eat. We like to use Owner 2/0 SSW hooks hidden inside the chum balls. We also use live pinfish or ballyhoo fished on a jighead when the fish are more aggressive. This technique may also result in grouper hookups, so be prepared to use slightly heavier tackle than you would for yellowtails, specifically 15-pound main line and 20-pound fluorocarbon leaders. We’re still getting good-size mutton snappers on the wrecks. These fish average 12 to 15 pounds. You’ll need live pinfish or ballyhoo. Pilchards are ideal if you can get them. If you decide to head offshore for dolphin (mahi) and tuna, your best bet is to leave the dock early in the day as the bite quite often shuts down by mid- to latemorning. We typically have plenty of dolphin
during July, but they tend to be on the small side. So, be sure you have a quality measuring stick onboard and remember the legal size is 20 inches to the fork of the tail (not the tip). There has been a lot of Sargasso in the area, so when you find a goodsize grass mat, drive right up to it and throw chunks or put down live baits. You’ll know in short order if there are dolphin under the mat. If not, move on to the next one. You can also break out your electric setup and drop for snowy grouper, tilefish and rosefish. This is especially productive in the middle of the day when the dolphin bite slows down. The two-day Sport Lobster Season (known locally as lobster mini season) is July 27 and 28 this year. We ask you to exercise caution, as our waters will be congested with boats and snorkelers, and please adhere to the regulations specific to Monroe County.
