Ingredients: 1 pound sushi grade Florida yellow fin tuna loin 1 tablespoon blackened seasoning blend 1 ripe, Florida avocado, seeded, peeled and cut in ½-inch dice 1 ripe Florida mango cut in ½-inch dice 1/4 cup sweet red peppers, diced 1/4 cup yellow peppers, diced 1 tablespoon fresh jalapeño, diced fine 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped 1 lime, juiced Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste Directions: Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Season all sides of the tuna loin with the blackened seasoning.

Sear tuna in the hot oil until browned but still pink in the center, about 15 to 20 seconds on each side. Remove seared tuna from the pan and set on a paper towel to rest.

In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine avocado, mango, diced peppers, jalapeno, cilantro and lime juice. Stir to combine; taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.

To serve tuna, place an even amount of salsa on each serving plate. Using a very sharp knife, slice seared tuna thinly across the grain. Arrange the sliced tuna around the salsa.

Meet the First X-Yacht with Electric Propulsion

T

he car industry is already far into the transition to green, electric power. But the boat industry is finally beginning to catch up. Due to different challenges this has taken time, but in 2022 there are actual products and practical experience available, making it possible to design and build a reliable and functional system, even for high end yachts.”We didn’t want to be first movers on this area, but preferred to wait until technology and knowledge had matured properly”, says Kræn Nielsen, CEO of X-Yachts’.

“And I’m really happy to say that the time finally is right to present the first X-Yacht with electric propulsion.”

A considerable development phase has led to the new model. X49E is a specially adapted version of the existing X49.

“We worked in close cooperation with the owner of build number one”, says technical manager John Morsing. “Finding the right project for our first boat with electric propulsion was crucial. This owner knows our boats well and has a strong passion for green, silent boating.

He also wants to go blue water cruising, which puts even bigger demands on the system. The

boat has been upgraded on several areas, such as rig, electronics etc. We have chosen a hybrid system for this boat, which means installing a diesel generator with capacity to take care of power in situations where battery capacity is not sufficient”, says Morsing.

The propulsion system in the new X49E is delivered by Finnish Oceanvolt, probably the world leader in electric propulsion systems for yachts.

“Oceanvolt has been a close partner all along”, says Morsing. “The boat is fairly big, 49 feet and weighs 12 tons. So we have installed two Oceanvolt ServoProp SD10 engine pods, each 10 kW. They run on 48V, and are mounted on each side of the traditional engine compartment, below the aft cabin bunks. The former engine compartment has become a dedicated technical space, housing the battery bank, charger/inverter, BMS, controllers and so on. The solution with two engines serves two purposes: More power and higher safety through redundancy.”

The battery bank has a capacity of 28,8 kW, consisting of LifePo4 lithium batteries, which has a considerably higher available power reserve

than traditional lead batteries. Range with pure electric power depends a lot on boat speed, wind and sea state, but a conservative estimate in calm conditions is 22,7 nautical miles at 5 knots. When in need for longer range, the diesel generator (an 11 kW Fischer Panda) is capable of running the boat for as long as there is diesel on board.

One of the major advantages of electrical propulsion is regeneration. When driven by engine, the propellers consume power much like a combustion engine consumes diesel. But when sailing, an electric propulsion system can generate power from the rotating propellers.

X49E can produce up to 3,5 kW under sail (when sailing + 8 knots). This means that sailing for about eight hours will charge the batteries from empty to full. And as a side note: This “full tank” is 100% green and free of cost!

The new X49E will now undergo extensive sea trials, before sailing Garmin Round Danmark Race from 15th of June.

Mercury Racing Expands Partnership with Powerboat P1 Designated Official Power of Class 1 and Partner of P1 Offshore

Buying a Pre-Owned Boat: The 10-Minute Walk-Through

P

urchasing a boat from a private party is almost always a “buyer beware” situation, and if you are the buyer you want to make certain you are not purchasing a boat that’s going to come with a lot of problems, or is even unsafe. You can, and should, hire a professional marine surveyor to inspect a boat before you buy. A marine surveyor is like a house inspector for a boat, a pro with the tools, training and knowledge to spot problems with the structure and systems on a boat. A professional survey usually costs $20 to $25 per foot of boat length. Before you make this investment, you can do a quick survey of your own to spot some obvious issues that should cause you to look for another boat to buy.

Hull Identification Number Every boat built since 1972 is required to have a 12-digit Hull Identification Number (HIN), which is analogous to the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on a car or truck. The HIN identifies the boat manufacturer, the model and serial number, and the date the boat was manufactured. The HIN is usually placed on the upper starboard transom of the boat. You can ask the seller for the HIN before you even visit the boat, and use the HIN to check to see if the boat has been reported stolen, was salvaged

by an insurance company, and to make sure that the seller is really the owner of the boat and has a clear title. There are services that will run a background check on the HIN for a small fee. You can also simply do a Google search of the HIN and see what pops up. The United States Coast Guard also runs a Recall Database at uscgboating.org/content/recalls.php.

If the boat is listed in this database you can call the boat manufacturer to find out if the recall was completed.

Scan the Hull A good way to a start a boat inspection is by simply taking a good look at the hull. This is easier to do if the boat is on a lift or a sling, rather than a trailer.

You are looking for any sign of repaired damage – an uneven surface or a wavy shape to the bottom or hull sides, a spot where the boat finish appears slightly mis-matched in color or texture, and any signs of bumps or blisters in the fiberglass. Pros will sometimes look at the boat with and without polarized sunglasses for a change in perspective. If you see something suspicious try to look at the same spot from inside the boat, and you may find evidence of a repair, which you should have inspected by a pro.

Soggy Transom One of the most-common issues with fiberglass boats is water infiltration in the transom. Most transoms have a core of wood or a composite material sandwiched between the thin inner and outer layers of fiberglass. Any place a hole is cut or drilled through the transom, for the outboard mounting bolts or the sterndrive, for a boarding ladder or transom U bolts, there is the potential for water to seep into this core and break it down. Each of these holes is supposed to be sealed and bedded to prevent this intrusion, but it’s not always done well.

You can do a preliminary check of the transom by tapping the outer surface with the handle of a screwdriver or with a small hammer with a plastic head. Each tap should produce a solid ringing tone. If the tap produces a dull thud, and the tool bounces back, there could be water in the core. Start by checking around any place there’s a fitting in the transom, especially if it’s below or near the waterline. If you see a stain below a fitting, it could be a sign that water is actually leaking out of a soggy transom. A transom can be repaired or replaced, but this can be an expensive job. If left unrepaired the transom will weaken, to the point where the weight of an outboard could break it right off the boat.

Through-Hull Fittings Insurance companies tell us that many boats sink at the dock, and a common culprit is a failed through-hull fitting that’s near the waterline. Plastic through-hull fittings can degrade and become brittle from UV exposure and eventually fail.

These are easy to look at from outside the boat. Though-hull fittings should be bronze or another metal.

Hull-to-Deck Joint Walk around the boat and give the hull-todeck joint a close inspection. It should be smooth and even with no obvious gaps.

Fresh sealant could indicate that a quick repair was made to a leaky joint. If you notice a mildew small in a boat cabin, it’s could be a sign that the hull-to- deck joint is leaking, or that a topside fitting, like a cleat or deck rail, is not properly bedded and water is getting into the hull lamination.

Electrical Issues The battery should be secured in a covered box, or the positive terminal should be covered. A loose battery is a sign of a careless owner. Take a quick look under the helm for signs of amateur wiring, especially if accessories have been installed on the boat.

Engine Basics Ask the seller for any receipts or other proof of regular engine maintenance or proper winterization. Pull the dipstick from a sterndrive engine or four-stroke outboard – if there’s milky oil on the dipstick it’s a sign of water in the oil. Observe the oil filter – if it looks old it may not have been changed in years. While you have your head in the engine compartment, look at the inside of the hull for a scum line or water line that could indicate the boat was swamped at some point, which could mean the engine was underwater or the electrical system compromised. Do you smell gasoline? There could be a leak in the fuel system, or the fuel tank could be leaking, which is a big problem. On a boat with stern drive power, push the drive left and right while the boat is out of the water. If it moves more than a quarterinch, the gimbal bearings could be worn and need to be replaced. A propeller that is badly dinged up or a damaged skeg in front of the prop is an indication that a previous owner was not a careful operator, and should make you wonder how well the rest of the boat was cared for.

with Captain Ray Markham OFFSHORE/ NEARSHORE Recreational anglers who have taken some deep water trips recently have been bringing up numerous red snapper that must be released until the season opener. But it appears that when the season reopens for them, it’s going to be game on. In addition to red snapper, the same waters are producing some big gag and red grouper along with a few scamp grouper.

The long-anticipated recreational red snapper season will start June 17th in Gulf state and federal waters off Florida and remain open through July 31st with an additional 12 days in the fall. If you plan to fish for red snapper in state or federal waters off Florida from a private recreational vessel, even if you are exempt from fishing license requirements, you must sign up as a State Reef Fish Angler. The mangrove snapper bite has been on fire this week as we come off Tuesday’s full moon. Fired-up fish have been chewing on nearshore wrecks, artificial reefs, ledges, and rock piles along the coast as well as offshore. Top nearshore baits have been live shrimp or small scaled sardines.

Deep

water fish have chewed on sardines, squid, and shrimp. Nearshore fish out to about 50-foot depths have ranged from 1 to 3-pounds with some fat offshore fish coming in ranging from 8-to 10-pounds. Greater depths have produced larger mangos. Along with mangos, vermilion, and lane snappers were caught.

The pelagic bite in depths beyond 150 feet has been spotty but for some, some decent action with blackfin tuna was to be had. Cobia have also been in the catch in nearshore waters around channel markers leading out of the Egmont Key Ship’s Channel. A few tripletail were also reported on the markers and buoys.

INSHORE Good moving water has triggered a good inshore bite for tarpon, snook, and trout in many areas of the region this week. Tarpon have pretty much stolen the scene along the beaches and just outside passes from Siesta Key to Tarpon Springs. Action has been brisk for Capt. Rick Grassett, who runs out of CB Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key. His anglers have been catching multiple tarpon per trip.

The beaches along our coast have good numbers of snook that moved to passes to spawn this week. Each full and new moon period through about the

Now that they are on the tail end of their spawn, we are going to try to really target them this coming week Tuesday on the ten hour all day prior to that new moon to see if they are back concentrated in that 40-70ft area we really found them well prior to their spawn. We are still catching a few here and there on our five-hour half day and a few on the ten hour all day. However, we are hoping to be able to find more of a concentration a little shallower than we have been fishing on our ten hour all day. They love those live shrimp and around 30lb leader and 3-4ot hooks and around 1-2oz leads.

Red grouper action near shore has been steady but its pretty picky and not super-hot inside the near shore areas inside 100ft of water. We are seeing some nice ones, but most are just under keeper size. You must sort through quite a few of those shorter fish to find a good keeper sized red grouper. We are seeing them most often on larger dead baits, but

the live pinfish works well too. The hot bait as of late has been a whole threadfin with a squid chunk.

Lane snapper have been going well near shore and we are seeing continuous streams of some fairly large sized lane snapper. They love a little bit of all the different baits, but the live shrimp and smaller cubes of squid seem to be working best.

Lighter tackle options are also best too.

Vermillions are a little deeper around that 80-100ft area of the deepest near shore water. They are like the lanes and bite just about all the baits we use, but most often we use smaller cubes of squid to target the vermillion. They are large overall this time of year, and they get more concentrated. Once you get offshore, they are even larger!

Mangrove snapper action is steady near shore, but they get bigger and more common as we get deeper to that 100ft mark.

We do see them shallow, all throughout the inshore and near shore waters and even offshore.

West Central Florida Southwest Coast first part of September will see snook spawning. While snook are closed through the summer to give these fish a chance to complete their spawning activity, it might be wise to resist the urge to target them.

Fair numbers of trout are being caught from Dunedin to Anclote Key. Many of these trout have been over the maximum 19-inch limit. A reminder that one fish per person may be in possession over 19-inches, a bag limit of three trout per person, and a boat limit of 6 fish per boat limit for the area south of Fred Howard Park.

FRESHWATER The heat of the day is definitely not the prime time to be fishing, but for those who just have to be on the water, look for some deeper areas as well as areas that might be shaded by overhanging trees or vegetation on shorelines.

Eastern shorelines might be a bit cooler at mid-day since the rising sun shines mostly on the western sides of lakes.

Work lures slowly. Large black, blue, and green pumpkin colors seem to produce continually with worms.

West Central Florida Generally, they get more and more easily caught and get larger and larger the deeper you go. Near shore, we target them with that hogfish set up described above with a live shrimp or white bait.

Mahi mahi are starting to show up near shore, and we are seeing them as shallow as around 40ft of water up to the deepest near shore water. We typically will see them while bottom fishing, especially after sitting at a spot for awhile creating that chum line. I like to have a lighter spinning rod standing by with a gotcha plug around 7/8ths ounce or up to around 1oz. you can underhand cast it out as far as you can and let it sink a bit and retrieve it with your rod tip pointed straight down and rip it past the passing mahi and often you will catch one or even sometimes two!

Trick is to work together and pick off as many as you like.

SARASOTA POWERBOAT GRAND PRIX - JUNE 25-JULY 4 - Sarasota - Held for more than three decades in the waters off of Sarasota, the annual boat races on the Gulf of Mexico (formerly known as the Suncoast Offshore) returns to Sarasota in July as part of a series of boat racing events. Sarasota’s events are scheduled for June 25th - July 4th, 2016 to benefit the Suncoast Charities for Children. Volunteer Hot Line: (941) 4877904 x103. Events to take place in Sarasota include concerts, powerboat displays and more. Even though the Powerboat Grand Prix race is only two days, there is more than a week of events leading up to the races, including the 4th of July fireworks in downtown Sarasota. If you’re coming to Lido Beach for the boat races, be sure to get there early. The parking lots at the beach fill up before 8am on Boat Race Day. There is plenty of parking at St. Armands Circle and the side streets near the beach and it’s only a short walk to Lido Beach for the Powerboat Grand Prix Race from there. Look for parking restrictions and fees on St. Armands Circle. Per City of Sarasota ordinance, Lido Beach is closed from 11:00 p.m. until Sunrise. The Sarasota Police Department will not allow access to Lido Beach before sunrise and no personal property may be left out on the beach overnight. No Bait, No Problem Alex and his buddies jumped in the boat and they just wanted to fish for anything in saltwater as they are from Minnesota and hadn’t fished in salt water. Bad news was there was no live bait in any bait shop in Homestead as we had terrible weather for a couple of days before hand preventing the shrimpers from going out. Hmmm, ok no problem.

With some frozen mullet we target sharks where the guys got a couple and lost a few and then it happened.

Under glass calm conditions and a great tide the bonefish started to tail and mud right next to the boat. I couldn’t resist so I rigged up a new penny colored Z Mann shrimp on a split shot weight and made a cast, twitch, twitch, bump, bump. The bonefish hit it and missed. Dang it.

I made another cast and repeated the process but this time I got a solid hit and handed the rod off to the closest guy next to me.

A few minutes later they had their first bonefish. Nice!!!!!

We wrapped it up on a

shallow ship wrecked where they hooked a 30lb barracuda but lost it to a pulled hook.

Birthday Boy Strikes Silver After a cancellation and a day off I was back on the water again today with Chrissy who booked me for her dad and mom to spend a half day on the water for his birthday tomorrow.

She originally wanted tarpon as her dad Bob (with one “O”, LOL) really wanted tarpon but I explained the tarpon situation and they were cool chasing bonefish and permit instead.

We started early at 6:30AM out of Homestead and took advantage of the lower stages of the tide. Man there were fish everywhere, bones and permit! After a number of shots things quieted down and we tried to fish a couple of spots but there were skiffs close enough to them that I couldn’t fish them so off we went somewhere else. Eventually I saw one of the skiffs leave and hit the exact spot where I knew there would be bonefish cruising. Well, well, well not long after we set up I hear Bob say “Oh, I got a hit!” I look and see the rod bend and the reel singing. Several long runs and a bit of drama as the bonefish tried to get under the boat, later we landed a nice 9lb bonefish just before we

Starting with mahis “ mahis are found in the Gulfstream in South Florida. These trips consist of mostly running and gunning as well as trolling looking for birds and debris. The mahis we find are usually in big schools and can be from small “peanuts” to “gaffers” and occasionally a “slammer”. It is so much fun when you get a family out or a group of friends and you run into a school of mahis. It is fast and furious action which usually results in landing quite a few fish.

While in the Gulfstream it is not uncommon to run into a sailfish and even a blue marlin. Blue marlin love to eat small mahis and we are al ways equipped with a the right tackle and lures in case we run to a blue

What a day!

Scott fly down from north Florida for two days of bonefish and permit fishing. The boat traffic at the marina was insane being Memorial Day weekend but once on the water it was surprisingly quiet as we focused on bonefish and permit.

Day one was insane with Scott going 7 for 9 on bonefish before taking a break and encouraging me to make a few casts which I did and quickly landed a bonefish as well. Day two we focused on permit and while it started quite the permit finally woke up at the end of the incoming tide and Scott had a ton of shots before the breeze kicked up and ended that fishing. We went back to bonefishing which we did about 15 minutes worth before having to high tail it back to the marina before a significant storm got the best of us.

Summertime is calm weather which is great for daytime and nighttime swordfishing. We do a lot more daytime swordfish trips, but we are equipped for nighttime trips as well. The swordfish can vary from a legal fish of 50 pounds or so and all the way up to 500 pounds. Just last week a 569-pound swordfish was caught in the daytime in the same waters we normally fish. If you have caught almost everything else or want the chance at a real giant, then swordfish trips are right for you.

Summertime also means trips to the Bahamas. We normally go to Bimini and these trips are multi day trips. We stay at a variety of hotels in Bimini and usually target yellowtail snappers and deep drop for snappers as well. Another option is to target the yellowfin tunas in NW Channel. We recently had a trip there a week or so ago and got our limit of snappers and our limit of tunas as well. The tunas

are mixed with both blackfin and yellowfins. Some of the yellowfins we caught were big and our biggest was 85 pounds.

We have plenty of trips open especially after mid-July. Now is the time to book one of these trips and enjoy some great weather and some great fishing!

COAST GUARD AUXILIARY OFFERS VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS AND SAFE BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. CLEARWATER COAST GUARD AUXILIARY TEACHING BOATING SAFETY CLASSES ONLINE - 2022 - A New Way to Learn … A New Crop of Safe Boaters. With the advent of COVID-19, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was advised to discontinue in-person classes for the safety of the instructors and students.

The good news is that the State of Florida (FWC) and the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved the Coast Guard Auxiliary to conduct online classes. These classes are not your standard webinar sessions where the students sit at their computers and are lectured at. And they’re not animated

cartoon sessions where you have to keep pressing enter to get to the next topic.

Classes are $40 per student and include the books, supplemental materials and course completion certificates. The classes being offered by the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary are conducted on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license.
