Suntex Marinas Acquires The Wharf in Marathon in the Florida Keys and Re-Launches it as Ocean View Marina
D
allas, Texas – Suntex Marina Investors, LLC (Suntex), the premier owner and operator of best-in-class marina properties announced today the acquisition of The Wharf in Marathon in the Florida Keys and, after a significant investment, will relaunch the property as Ocean View Marina. The new acquisition establishes a significant foothold for Suntex in the Keys following the purchases of Faro Blanco, Caloosa Cove and Garrison Bight within the past year. The property features the newest dry storage facility in the Florida Keys, developed in 2021. UCKLAND, New Zealand – March 10, 2022 – Rayglass today announced the release of a custom Protector 410 Targa fitted with twin Mercury V12 Verados, the most powerful engines ever to be fitted on an RIB vessel. Each engine boasts a massive 7.6-litre displacement and 600HP giving the vessel a total of 1200HP. Honey and Orange Glazed Grouper with Florida Vegetables Ingredients 4 (6-ounce) Florida grouper fillets 1 Florida zucchini, diced small 1 Florida squash, diced small 1 Florida bell pepper, julienned 1 cup Florida orange juice 1 tablespoon Florida orange blossom honey 1 tablespoon orange marmalade 1 tablespoon soy sauce 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon fresh thyme 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1 lemon, juiced Oil for cooking Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
Directions:
In a small pot, over medium-high heat, combine orange juice, honey, marmalade, soy sauce, and mustard. Bring to boil and reduce by half, creating a thick sauce. Remove from heat and set aside. Preheat a large sauté pan to medium-high heat, add butter and 1 tablespoon oil. Season fillets with salt and pepper, brush each side with orange sauce and sear for 2-3 minutes per side or until cooked through. Remove from heat and set aside. Wipe out same pan and reheat over medium-high heat with 1 tablespoon oil. Add vegetables and sauté for 5-6 minutes. Stir in fresh thyme and lemon juice. Serve warm with grouper.

Dinghy Buying Guide
A
dinghy can have several definitions but for our purposes here, we’ll focus on it being a tender to a larger recreational boat. A dinghy is used as a commuter to go ashore or to visit other boats and it can venture where the larger vessel cannot. Deciding which dinghy is the best for you is based on its intended purpose and how you will use it. To narrow the options, consider the following: Size The adage goes that you should purchase the biggest dinghy your boat can carry. Large dinghies have a significant carrying capacity for both people and cargo such as groceries or jerry cans of fuel and water and that makes life easier when cruising or living aboard. However, if you often boat alone or have a small primary vessel, you need to compare the benefit of capacity to the dinghy’s weight and storability. Will you need to lift the dinghy aboard yourself or will you carry it on davits? Will you be the only one hauling it ashore on beach landings? Will you need to tow a large dinghy behind the boat (rather than carrying it) thereby losing speed and fuel efficiency? Bigger isn’t always better so consider your boating style and what makes sense.
Construction & Materials How the dinghy is built and what it’s made of are key factors. Rigid dinghies may be made of wood, fiberglass or rotomolded plastic. They tend to have integrated keels so they track better when rowed but may be heavier and less storable than inflatables, which can be rolled up and tucked into a locker when not in use. Rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) have collars usually made of Hypalon or PVC with fiberglass or aluminum floors. RIBs won’t scratch or dent the larger boat when tied alongside, may be lighter (depending on the construction of the floor), and are usually more stable with greater buoyancy than their hard counterparts. RIB floors are either single or double skinned. Double floors provide a quieter and more comfortable ride but are heavier. RIB fabric can be either PVC-coated polyurethane cloth or Hypalon, which is a neoprene-coated nylon that is less susceptible to UV degradation and may be easier to repair with a patch kit when punctured. Hypalon is more expensive may have a longer service life if you boat in the tropics or year-round. Either material will last longer if covered when not in use.
Design & Features The basic design of a dinghy tender, especially a RIB, includes a bow, sides (gunwhales or tubes), a thwart that provides additional seating and a transom board with a drain. For the basic commuter, this will be sufficient, however if you use the dinghy for extended shore exploration, distance cruising when fishing or diving, or you’d just like added comfort, a dinghy with a dedicated driver’s console and more plush seating may fit your needs better. Such dinghies are usually larger to accommodate the “furniture” (heavier) and may have lockable storage in the bow to stow valuables if you leave them at a restaurant dock or on a beach unattended. Some other advanced dinghy features include integrated running lights, electronics such as a VHF radio and a fuel tank. You’ll definitely want to check for adequate handholds or a fixed line running down the side of the tubes. These handles help you drag the dinghy ashore or to hang on during a bumpy ride. A strong D-ring built into the stem is better than a soft attach point if you will be towing the dinghy frequently or far.
Attach points fixed to the inside floor will help when lifting the dinghy onto davits but otherwise may be toe stubbers. Horsepower Rating Each dinghy is rated for maximum horsepower of outboard engine and that should not be exceeded for safety reasons. Large outboards can be heavy and can overpower the basic structural integrity of the small boat. If you want to get on plane and go fast, especially when the boat is loaded, you’ll need a larger outboard. Smaller gas, propane or electric outboards are for slow cruising on a dinghy that’s more compact so if you’re just visiting other boats in the anchorage, that’s all you’ll need. If however, you’re expecting to pull kids on water toys, look for a larger engine and therefore a bigger dinghy
Affordability Size, materials, features and horsepower all translate into dollars so a combination of the above also defines how much dinghy you can afford. The more complex and better outfitted the dinghy, the more expensive. And it’s likely you’ll want a large outboard on a big expensive dinghy so pretty soon, your tender may be approaching the cost of the vessel that it’s supposed to serve. Much to Consider So how, where and with whom you use a dinghy are guiding factors in selecting your next tender. Will you need to haul many people and much equipment or will you be boating alone or as a couple? Will you use the dinghy for short runs to the beach in your shorts and T-shirt or will you make longer excursions to a dockside restaurant dressed for dinner and will require more seating and less splashing? Will you let your kids play with the dinghy in which case you may want something smaller, simpler, cheaper and less powerful. These are just a few questions you need to ask yourself before finding the “perfect” dinghy.

With the advent of COVID-19, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was advised to discontinue in-person classes for the safety of the instructors and students. The good news is that the State of Florida (FWC) and the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved the Coast Guard Auxiliary to conduct online classes. These classes are
not your standard webinar sessions where the students sit at their computers and are lectured at. And they’re not animated cartoon sessions where you have to keep pressing enter to get to the next topic. Classes are $40 per student and include the books, supplemental materials and course completion certificates. The classes being offered by the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary are conducted on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. In addition, because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! The boating safety class is also a requirement for many boaters in Florida. In the Sunshine State, anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, must successfully complete a boater safety course approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in order to operate any boat powered by more than 10 horsepower, and they are required to carry their boater education card with them when out on the water along with picture ID. with Captain Ray Markham Rainy days with thunderstorms have been the norm, prompting all anglers on the water to take extra precautions in planning trips both inshore, nearshore, and offshore. Deadly lightning can occur miles from actual storms. Monitor VHF radios for weather warnings and be sure to always leave a float plan. NEARSHORE/ OFFSHORE Red grouper action has been fairly steady from 40 feet out to 100 feet as has been mangrove snapper in the 2-to 6-pound size range. Vermilion and lane snappers have also been pretty dependable. Chunks of threadfin herring have been good baits for most snappers in this depth range. Bringing along some live shrimp can also help you catch some hogfish along with a variety of snappers. You’ll go through a lot of shrimp so be prepared to stuff the livewell. Some of the federally permitted charter and party boats have been catching some nice red snapper consistently along with some big gag grouper while targeting these fish in the 150-to 220-foot range westnorthwest of Pinellas. While those boats have headed deep,
other anglers working in only 40 feet of water southwest of Pinellas have also produced some big red snapper. INSHORE It’s been a mixed bag inshore lately. Slower tides can make your work a little harder for what you catch, but still, anglers have been able to catch some decent trout, a lot of snook, some quality redfish, and a few flounder while working around Tampa and Sarasota Bays. For anglers fishing the ICW from Clearwater north, good action around the spoil islands for trout has been taking place. Anglers have been on some fired up redfish on the higher tides around Honeymoon and Caladesi Islands. Eppinger Rex and Johnson’s weedless spoons have taken the lion’s share but both live shrimp and DOA Shrimp have produced good numbers of fish. The DOA Deadly Combo has been very productive around grassy flats with potholes lately for some trout. When the depth of the lure suspends just off the bottom, flounder have been picked up on the sandy potholes near channel edges.
with Captain Kyle Messier Welcome to Tarpon Country ladies and gentlemen!!! It’s that time of year again where anglers from all over the world descend onto the flats of Crystal River and Homosassa looking to accomplish one goal/life long quest: CATCH A BIG ASS TARPON ON FLY! Year after year Tarpon migrate north from the waters of south Florida swimming up the Gulf Coast feeding sporadically along the way before making their way offshore to spawn. This migration (in my opinion) begins in late February along the coast of the 10,000 islands before the arrival of the first few Tarpon along our coast in late April. As the Gulf of Mexico warms over the course of the spring and into the summer these Silver Kings continue to swim north following warming water temperatures. Usually the warmer the water the better, as these mostly tropical fish do not like water temperatures below the 72 degree mark. Here along the Nature Coast when the

West Central Florida Southwest Coast Terra Ceia Bay has been productive lately, particularly around thunderstorm activity. Just prior to or after these storms will typically turn on a bite for multiple species. An occasional pompano or permit has been caught around Shell Key and Pass-A-Grille Channel of late by anglers using the DOA TerrorEyz in root beer color with a 3/8 oz. head. FRESHWATER Fly anglers have been doing well in many of the lakes around the West Central region for both bass and panfish. Working the perimeter of the lakes with flies imitating worms, crickets or other insects found in the area has been productive. One artificial lure that is often overlooked for bass is the DOA Shrimp. Most anglers use them in saltwater but don’t think about them for bass, but I’m here to tell you that they work well. Give them a try and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

water temperatures hit 80 degrees and the white butterflies start flying Tarpon chasing fly anglers know its game on!!! The 2022 season has already been deemed one of the best seasons over the last decade by many of the seasonal Tarpon guides who have fishing these flats for years. Lots of fish, Big fish, and a consistent migratory pattern have lead to numerous daily hook ups featuring plenty of fish in the air. On a regular occurrence this season I’ve had anglers putting 3, 4, 5, fish in the air all before the heat of the day kicked in. Keep in mind that this is a sight fishing fishery so those anglers that are putting fish in the air are often part of the stalk, casting at fish they are visually seeing roll before presenting a fly and watching the eat!! There is nothing more exciting in all of fly-fishing than watching a 100lb+ fish suck a fly off the surface in 4ft of crystal clear water. For those anglers interested in hitting the water for a day

The Labrador current (cold water upwelling) as it is known by many anglers arrives during the summer and can cool down bottom temperatures and the bottom fishing in some areas along Florida’s east coast. This phenomena can drop bottom water temperatures into the mid-sixties, so finding warmer water is the key to locating fish. Studies have shown the phenomena is the effect of a prevailing south wind combined with the Coriolis effect pushing the warm surface water offshore and the cold bottom water moving up to replace displaced water, but either way it equates to some tough fishing at times. Look for the blue water bite to improve along the inshore reefs and wrecks of Chris Benson, 8A Reef, and Pelican Flats, with kingfish, dolphin, black fin tuna, and cobia serving as the primary species, along with an occasional wahoo or sailfish. This is also
the time of year when cooler waters sometimes push the giant manta rays in close to the shoals off the Canaveral Bight, bringing cobia with them. Further offshore, the Gulf Stream typically moves in closer making tuna a possibility for smaller boats, and if the summer squalls stay away, running to the other side of the stream isn’t out of the question. Along the beach, look for the silver kings (tarpon), smoker kings, blacktip sharks, jumbo jack crevalle, and redfish to be shadowing pods of Atlantic menhaden (pogies), threadfin herring (greenies), Spanish sardines, and bay anchovy (glass minnows) in close to the beach. Also look for snook fishing in the surf to improve, as we get closer to the commencement of the fall bait run. Remember snook are out of season until September 1st, so if you target them, please handle and release them with care. In and around the inlets, look for Spanish mackerel, tarpon, jack cervalle, and bonita to be working schools of glass minnows on the outside, and snook, redfish, mangrove snapper, and flounder around jetties and other structure.

Made our way deep into July now here in Ft. Lauderdale. Fishing charters are now firmly entrenched in the typical summertime patterns, that not being only fishing but the weather patterns as well. Pleased to say we have been enjoying reasonable fishing and also reasonable weather on most days. Summer brings more pleasant sea conditions on a typical day than winter days. We do see some rain, we are tropical here, but usually scattered and does not interrupt our days on the water. There is a large disparity of the rain experienced on the inland areas of the state and our offshore conditions. Inshore areas out west get it regularly, but we do get some too. The A/C and leather inside our cabin not only serves to shake the sun for a minute but also to duck in and shake the occasional shower too. Action along the reef lines continues to produce Kingfish, Bonito and Tunas. Some Sailfish along those areas as well and we have had Wahoo too. Amazing numbers of Barracuda as of late, likely due to the recent regulations of

Central Florida Angling on the in-shore lagoons will continue to show improvement, with fishing in the predawn and late evening hours being most productive. Look for redfish in the skinny water up close to the shoreline holding in the vicinity of bait concentration, and target them utilizing smaller top-water plugs. Once the sun starts to grow hot, the top-water bite slows down, and bait becomes your better option. For larger trout, fish live pigfish in close to docks and other structure adjacent to deeper water. In deeper water, look for large schools of ladyfish, small trout, and tarpon pushing schools of glass minnows near the surface. Finally, look for pompano schools holding in the shadows of the causeway bridges. Fish jigs tipped with shrimp or sand fleas (mole crabs) along the deeper edges and drop-offs. strict management of them. The vast majority of those (as well as Sailfish and Sharks) are caught, photographed, and released. Some of these fish have measured out quite large. Some Mahi-Mahi, Snappers, Amberjack, and Almoco Jacks on the wrecks and structure. Along the edges of what we term the “3rd” reef continues to provide action for our anglers and both boats have been concentrating their efforts along that reef line and just beyond it’s edges for our Ft. Lauderdale fishing charters.. Trips to the deeper water and out into the daytime Swordfish grounds and beyond have resulted in some Mahi-Mahi, but they have been small with many “shorts” which we of course throw back. So the reef line and the abundance of bait there has been our choice of areas to search out fish. Decent numbers of Kings, that pictured one weighed 37#. Blackfin Tunas, Bonito, Blackfin Tunas id there as well. Occasional Sail and Wahoo are pictured as well. Jacks on the wrecks as pictured and
some Sharks continue in the area. Weather has been decent and warm, but not frightfully so, and peaked @ 89 today. Looking at the same for tomorrow and then a couple of degrees lower for an upcoming couple of days. Plenty warmer in many other places, and the breeze off the ocean is why we live here. Bring the kids, summer is slipping away.
