The Florida Mariner
The Florida Mariner is produced out of North Port, located in Southwest Florida. We recently were affected, like most of our SW Florida advertisers, by Hurricane Ian. We were lucky to survive with minimal damage. We were not located in an area of North Port that was affected with flooding.
Both our office and our printers in Fort Myers were without power for a week. Because of that we were unable to produce our magazine this issue in print. Instead our issue 969 will be available digitally only on our website themariner. com and on issuu.com.
To our advertisers… we are running your ads complementary this issue in our way
to show support. If you are in need and have a message that the Florida Mariner can help spread, please feel free to reach out to us by email at ahoy@floridamariner.com and we will do what we can to help.
To our readers… thank you for all your constant support over our 39 year history. The boating community in SW Florida will need your support and understanding. If our advertisers have a service you need or a product you are considering please contact them. Be patient with them as they have also been through a lot and need your support and understanding that things may be less available or may take more time to schedule.
Thank you,
Florida Mariner staff

Mercury earns Business Friend of the Environment award from Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce
MADISON,
Wis. (Oct. 4, 2022) — Mercury Marine, a division of Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC), today accepted a Business Friend of the Environment Award from Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce (WMC), the state’s chamber of commerce and manufacturers association. During a ceremony at its headquarters in Madison, WMC named Mercury the award winner in the Sustainability – Large Business category. WMC has presented its Business Friend of the Environment awards to Wisconsin businesses annually for the past 32 years.
Eight other Wisconsin businesses joined Mercury in receiving honors this year, as WMC conferred awards to a small-, mediumand large-sized business in each of three categories: Sustainability, Use of Innovative Technology and Environmental Stewardship.
Scott Louks, Mercury sustainability manager, accepted the award on the company’s behalf and expressed his pleasure at his company’s win in the category that considers all elements of sustainability.
“Winning in this broad-scope category is especially gratifying, because it is a recognition of all that we do to be kind to the environment,” Louks said. “From adopting renewable sources of energy, to cleaning up the environment, to using only recycled aluminum in our die-casting operations, to manufacturing fuel-efficient and low-emissions engines, to using returnable and reusable packaging, to making people’s lives better and so much more — at Mercury we strive to make sustainability a part of everything we do. It’s not always easy, it requires cost and effort, and that’s why this acknowledgement is so special.”
In promoting the award, WMC cited a goal “to demonstrate to state policymakers, businesses and the public that sound environmental practices are good for Wisconsin and its business environment.”
At today’s awards ceremony, WMC Director of Environmental & Energy Policy Craig Summerfield elaborated on that theme. “Wisconsin’s economy depends on industry leaders who go above and beyond to use sustainable and environmentally friendly business practices,”

Two Minutes to Save a Life
wo minutes. That is all it takes to file a Float Plan. What’s a Float Plan you say? Then you are the very person the Coast Guard
How many times have we all heard about boaters who have gone missing and rescue agencies such as the Coast Guard and Florida Fish and Wildlife have no idea where to begin their search and rescue operation? What is hard for the family and the rescuers to accept is searching for many days and finally finding the missing boat or boater, but too late to save them. Or even worse, not
A Float Plan is nothing more than something in writing advising people when and where you are leaving the land, what kind of boat you are in, where you are going, and when you expect to return. Float Plans can be quite extensive or very simple; they can be left at home with friends or family and they can also be left on the dashboard of your vehicle at a boat ramp if you trailer your vessel. Most marinas and boat ramps have frequent patrols by law enforcement officers. Any vehicle in the parking lot after the closing hour is checked and if it has a Float Plan on the dashboard indicating the boat should have returned by then, an alert is immediately sounded. No time is lost and the rescuers, thanks to the Float Plan, have a very good idea of where
to begin their search efforts.
Having a missing loved one is very stressful, and the family may be too shaken to remember where the boater said they were going or if that information was even shared with them. A Float Plan is the simplest way for boaters to help their family – and themselves. It only takes two minutes to do.
Two minutes to save a life – and it might be your own.

Women at the Helm: Tips from Captain Jana
Being a female captain is still a novelty. Recently, I went into a marina restroom. Unfortunately, I walked into the men’s room because it was marked, Captain. Oops! I hadn’t noticed that they only had two choices, “Ladies” or “Captains.” I am a female captain, and I love operating boats. It’s probably time we change the perception about women and boating. I work with many female boaters seeking a little extra training and a lot more confidence on the water.
Here are a few things that I work on to build confidence quickly:
1. Knowing how your boat handles— taking the helm
We start by getting comfortable with the boat. Try to go out on the water on less busy days with minimal winds and slack tide. Get a feel for how your boat moves and reacts, take it around the block and kick the fenders! Add speed, stop, reverse, and pay attention to how the boat responds as you maneuver at the wheel. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you will have control of your boat’s movement.
2. Understanding how to read a chart and use GPS and depth finders.
3. Docking a boat by being aware of how current and wind affect steering
A challenging part for many boaters is docking. Docking is generally when less experienced boaters want to turn the wheel over to the supposed “pro onboard.” Here is where practice makes perfect…or at least close enough. Practice docking by moving in and out of the slip. Alert the marina staff that you will be practicing a few times and do not need assistance. It is easier to learn when no one is watching or judging. Pay attention to how the current and wind will push your boat.
You may bump the piling (don’t sweat it). It will give you practice communicating with your deckhand to walk a fender or throw a line. The best advice I have for you is…. Go SLOW like the PRO. Nothing will boost your confidence more than docking your boat. In my experience, women make some of the finest boat handlers and captains. So get started….
• Take a course in basic boat handling skills (if available, find a women’s-only class) or hire a teaching captain that can help build your boating skills and confidence. I promise you that one day on the water with a captain by your side will improve your confidence 100%.
• Take the wheel every chance you get.
The adage “practice makes perfect” is valid for any boat handler. Nothing can replace time at the wheel to boost your confidence.
• Take a chart, review your course and understand the “lay of the land.” The
first time you see a boat run aground, you’ll be happy you know the waterway. Marinas and bait stores usually have updated charts.
• Take a break and enjoy being on the water! Keep your eyes out for other women at the helm. We may be smaller
numbers but mighty good

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. No record of any possible deficiencies will be reported to the USCG, state agency or any other authority. Want to know more about this complimentary Vessel Safety Check program? Contact Peter Burns at (772) 486-2684 or burnspet@aol.com. St. Lucie River Power Squadron, one of more than 300 squadrons nationwide, also offers safe boating classes to the public. Check on their website, www.slrps.org, when classes will resume. Information about the parent organization is available at www.usps.org.

CLEARWATER COAST GUARD AUXILIARY TEACHING BOATING SAFETY CLASSES
ONLINE - 2022 - A New Way to Learn … A New Crop of Safe Boaters. With the advent of COVID-19, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was advised to discontinue in-person classes for the safety of the instructors and students. The good news is that the State of Florida (FWC) and the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have
approved the Coast Guard Auxiliary to conduct online classes. These classes are not your standard webinar sessions where the students sit at their computers and are lectured at. And they’re not animated cartoon sessions where you have to keep pressing enter to get to the next topic.
Classes are $40 per student and include the books, supplemental materials and course completion certificates. The classes being offered by the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary are conducted on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. In addition, because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! The boating safety class is also a requirement for many boaters in Florida. In the Sunshine State, anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, must successfully complete a boater safety course approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in order to operate any boat powered by more than 10 horsepower, and they are required to carry their boater education card with them when out on the water along with picture ID. Contact the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Clearwater Flotilla, for boating safety classes at: www.clwboatingsafety.com or by email at clwtr.auxboating@gmail.com or call 727469-8895.

Changes Are On The Way
October has a lot to offer depending on the weather. Some years water temperatures drop quickly due to some early cool fronts (not cold fronts) or normal they should start a gradual drop as the month comes to an end. Two things are normal for this month Cobia make their last showing around buoys and range markers making them easier to catch.Redfish get pumped up and start getting ready for the winter weather both are great catch and eat.
CobiaFishing,I prefer neat tides the slower the better makes them come up around the surface more to feed and easier to catch. I use medium spinning tackle 40-pound breaded line a 3-inch float (Four Horsemen) with 40-pound leader and about 5-feet long tied to a 3/0 circle hook. LiveBaits top choice for me live pinfish or large threadfin sardine.
Artificial Baits many of the imitation crabs or long ell types work great and should always have one rod ready to go in case the cobia shows up close to the boat.
Buoy Hopping is considered one of the best methods for Cobia fishing in October simply put get there first early as you can and go from one buoy to another you will find them it takes time and money for gas but well worth the trip when you can end up a nice one for dinner. New rules are now in effect for size and total allowed on a boat per day.
Redfish Fishing patterns have changed
over the past years and the redfish have shifted from the flats to the docks from Covert Isles to Snell Isle. Most of us captains haven’t quite figured out why this has happened, so we can only guess. We have noticed more action around the docks and structures than on the flats. So, what is my secret to catching the big redfish? Using cut dead bait on the bottom? My years of experience tell me they love cut pinfish, threadfin sardines and ladyfish. Remember that you want a nice chunk but not too big, because you want them to be able to take it on the first bite. I switch from my regular 1/0 to a 2/0 or even a 3/0 kahle circle hook and 40-pound fluorocarbon leader about 3-feet long. Depending on the depth of water, I add a number 3 or 4 split shot or even a 3/8-ounce egg sinker rigged Texas style to keep the bait on the bottom. I have an advantage using my 2-10 ft. Power Poles. My method is to drop the anchor just past the dock and back my boat between the two docks and then drop my Power Poles keeping the boat anchored parallel to the docks. This way I can fish clients from either side of the boat depending on tide movement. First, I bait my clients up and cast their baits about midway under the dock. Then I start tossing some small pieces of cut bait every few minutes to create my own feeding station or you can make your life easy and use Lee Fisher Chum Ring which makes chum from any bait you have on board or use pre-made chum
to put inside of it patience is the key word here, so don’t be in a hurry. Sit and wait and the big ones will come, and yes there is a chance you could catch a few catfish but it’s worth it if you can land a few big reds.
Speckled Trout fishing for the big ones is just starting this month and as the weather cools seems the bigger, they get. Look for the big ones around the edges of channels and any drop offs in the flats that tend to be at least 4 to 6 feet in depth. Gandy bridge has always been a great spot for me at the cold fronts move in so don’t overlook this great eating fish and fun to catch. Trout are excellent to fish for with artificial baits. Use light tackle to make the adventure even better.
Tackle for cobia:
OkumaCedros 7 ft rod with Okuma Azores 6000H reel Line: Fins Windtamer braided 40-pound test Leader: SoftSteelstretchable Fluorocarbon 40-pound test Hook: Trident 3/0 circle
Tackle for redfish: Okuma SRT Inshore Elite 7-6 MH rod with Azores 4000H reel Line: Fins Windtamer braided 20-pound test Leader: Softsteelstretchable Fluorocarbon 40-pound test Hook: Trident 3/0 Kahle circle

Big Ol’ Black Drum
Have you ever been to one of those large family gatherings where one of the grandparents or great parents is talking about a family member only to throw the words “Bless His Heart” into the story? Usually those words are the precursor for a story of struggles or sadness but there are a few people that can turn these stories of sadness into a comical performance. My favorite comedian of all time John Reep said it best: When ever someone throws out a “Bless His Heart” in conversation there is a going to be some trash talking involved.
Lately, my anglers and I have been having some incredible success catching and releasing Black Drum in the 20-45lb ranges. Now catching these large fish is awesome but there are times when I have a Black Drum boat side (especially the Giants) and I can’t help but have this weird thought in the back of my mind. My thought goes a little something like this:
“Look at that Monster Black Drum. Bless His Heart.
He’s not as pretty as a Redfish but surely his mother still loves him.”
What? Is it bad to have those feelings? I promise I love all fish but pulling a 40lb Black Drum out of the water with his lips so busted up that it looks like lipstick is comical to me. Now one may wonder what’s with the busted lips? The areas of limestone and oysters where we fish for Black Drum often are very rough or jagged. As these fish forage along the bottom their lips can become incredibly raw as they mouth the bottom below trying to find shrimp and blue crabs.
Since these fish spend a good portion of their day feeding on the bottom it helps to make sure your baits or flies are weighted properly as to stay as close to the bottom as possible. With stronger than normal tides during the next few months fishing around the earlier or latter portions of the tides are a must.
Although some
folks give Black Drum a bad wrap they really are some of the most awesome fish that swim in shallow water. Any tailing fish is special in shallow water but a fish that can reach 50lbs+ takes things to a different level.

Acorns dropping, love bugs hatching and my fall flora in full bloom are all signs of our seasonal changes and indications my favorite time of year to fish has arrived. Fall has certainly arrived as schools of black and silver mullet, Atlantic menhaden (pogies), thread fin herring (greenies), and bay anchovies (glass minnows) have begun their southerly migration in search of warmer waters. This migration creates a buffet of tasty little baitfish heading south, shadowed by a large array of hungry predators looking to fatten up for the winter.
If weather permits, near-shore opportunities are the best you will see all year. Along the beaches, target areas of concentrated bait schools for a mixed bag of snook, tarpon, kingfish, cobia, jack crevalle, oversized redfish, and sharks. Additionally, snook fishing in the surf has improved as the baitfish move south along the beach. Also look for schools of glass minnows to begin showing up bringing larger Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and tarpon with them. Currently distant summer squalls have elevated the seas to 5 to 6 feet, so be careful and stay safe.
Concentrate your efforts in and around the inlets
of Ponce, Port Canaveral, and Sebastian looking for flounder, snook, jack crevalle, and oversized redfish feeding on migrating baitfish along the jetties and just outside the inlets. Easterly swells, elevated and falling tides and aggressive anglers can make for sporty angling conditions, so please pay attention, be patient, and enjoy the rewards. Remember when fishing in these challenging conditions to keep you engine running and someone positioned at the helm ready to react if needed, wear your kill switch and be careful anchoring in swift currents.
In the north Indian River and Mosquito Lagoons, higher water levels will allow anglers to venture into areas normally inaccessible during the spring and summer months. Look for slot redfish in close to the edges along the shoreline shadowing pods of finger mullet, and for the larger redfish staged in deeper water ambush sites where migrating mullet are forced to venture out from the safety of the shallow flats. In deeper water areas, look for ladyfish, spotted sea trout, jacks, and tarpon feeding on schools of glass minnows. These

October is a transitional month when we begin to see our fall and winter fish arrive in the waters off Marathon. Their arrival coincides with cold fronts, which come later and later every year.
Fishing on the reef can always be challenging during October, and it’s best to get out there early in the morning. The snapper bite has switched from mangroves to yellowtails. We’re fishing primarily in the 60- to 90-foot depths, and the fish average 14 to 16 inches. Mixed with the yellowtails are medium-size mutton snappers in the eight- to ten-pound category.
Be sure to keep the chum flow nice and steady. Water temps in the low 80’s keep the snappers’ metabolisms revving on high and, hence, they need to eat more. We use YellowtailUp and Chum Drop together with ground chum to keep the fish up and feeding in the slick.
As we get to the late part of the month, the grouper will show up, mostly reds
and blacks. Use live ballyhoo or pinfish for best results.
We will also see the arrival of large cero mackerel this month. They’re quite tasty and excellent for the smoker. These fish can get up to 10 or 12 pounds. Live pilchards or small, live ballyhoo are the best baits. To prevent bite-offs, be sure to use very light #4 wire six to eight inches in front of your 2/0 or 3/0 Owner SSW hook.
A smattering of king mackerel will make an appearance as well. They’re typically in the five- to 15-pound class with the larger kings showing later in the fall.
Fishing offshore, the dolphin (mahi mahi) bite looks to be solid this month, with lots of nice gaffers at eight to ten pounds along with a fair number of larger fish in the 15- to 20-pound class.
The usual assortment of lures – blue and white or pink and white –will serve you best. Rigged ballyhoo are also a good bet.
schools of fish are easily located by watching for bird and fish activity. Once located, these schools will produce explosive action on small top water plugs, or popping bug flies. Also, if you locate a school of the larger black mullet, try fishing spoons of soft plastic baits deep under the school. Even though, mullet are vegetarians, redfish and sea trout will often mingle in feeding on shrimp and crabs kicked up from the bottom by feeding mullet. If you find heavy mullet schools working the shallows, try fishing with a DOA Shrimp very slow within the mullet school.
Lastly, this is the spawning season for redfish. Breeder schools of redfish can be found in the open waters of the flats, inlet passes and in open waters off of the beach. These over slot redfish are great fun to catch, but remember their spawning success is the future of our fishery. With that said if you target them please step up the size of your tackle (20-pound tackle or larger) to facilitate a shorter battle and handle and release them with extreme care.
Marathon/Florida Keys
Make sure you have live bait with you as the bigger fish will quite often refuse an artificial but gladly gobble up a pinfish tossed in their direction.
As always, there are loads of blackfin tuna on weed lines and out at the humps. These fish are running 10 to 15 pounds, with more than a few pushing 20 pounds.
Bayside fishing offers copious amounts of good-size mangrove snappers. The seatrout should arrive during the second half of the month. They’ll be mixed with the mangroves on the grass banks and shallow wrecks.
October also heralds the arrival of the Spanish mackerel run, which really heats up in November.
Finally, if we get an early cold front, we may also find cobia and gag groupers on the shallower wrecks in 10 to 20 feet of water.

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA - Mudville Grille - 3105 Beach Boulevard - Capt. Russell is happy to be a sponsor of the Florida Lure Anglers Club in Jacksonville, Fla. The FLA is not just a club for professional anglers, they are promoting saltwater lure fishing at all levels, especially among beginners. They do this by offering Junior, Teen and Lady “Angler of the Year” titles as a complement to our Club “Angler of the Year” title. Anglers will compete for points in an annual series of up to 10 tournaments to win these coveted titles Furthermore, we encourage a family environment by allowing Junior and teen Anglers to join in as an addition to our normal two-adult per boat limit. Guests are welcome to come and join our monthly meetings and listen to our guest speakers who discuss a wide variety of fishing techniques and helpful tips for all anglers. Meetings are held the last Monday of every month at the Mudville Grille located at 3105 Beach Blvd. Doors are open at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7:00 p.m.
