Ingredients 2 Florida spiny lobsters, cut in half length-wise 1/2 cup bell peppers, diced fine 1/3 cup onions, diced fine 4 tablespoons arugula pesto 1 lemon, juiced 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened 2 cups brown rice, cooked 2 tablespoons unsalted butter Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
Directions: Heat grill to medium-high. Add grill pan over direct heat and add 1 tablespoon butter. Add peppers and onions and saute until soft. Add cooked rice and stir to combine, cook until warmed through. Remove from heat and set aside. Brush 1 tablespoon butter onto lobster meat and season with salt and pepper. Grill over direct heat (meat side down) for 4-5 minutes depending on size of lobster. Do not overcook. Turn over and brush on arugula pesto to coat. Remove from grill, drizzle lemon juice, and serve with rice or Florida vegetables

he Marine Industries Association of Southwest Florida and Tampa Bay (MIA), in partnership with the Old Salt Fishing Foundation, has announced the formation of the Boaters Helping Boaters Hurricane Relief Fund, supporting Families of those making a living on Southwest Florida waters. “It is hard to imagine the challenges our members and all those a part of Southwest Florida’s Marine Industry have faced in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian,” said MIA Executive Director John Good. “At the same time, it is heartwarming to see the outpouring of support and the efforts being made by our industry to get back to some level of normalcy as quickly as possible. While there are many worthwhile fund-raising efforts out there, our goal is to put dollars directly into the hands of those in our industry most in need. We are thankful that our friends at The Old Salt Fishing Foundation are joining the effort with us.” Established in 1971, the Foundation’s mission is “To create, protect and promote recreational fishing opportunities for Florida anglers and their families.” With an all-volunteer staff and board of directors, they hold several annual fishing tournaments, have extensive youth & family outreach programs, and angler education initiatives. Over the past ten years, they have donated more than $1 million dollars to deserving regional charities. Having raised $32,800 during Covid for the fishing community, they have the experience to properly accept and distribute funds.
100% of monies collected will go directly into the hands of those in need who are a part of the marine industry, fishing industry, marine law enforcement, and others related to the waterfront. The Foundation and the MIA will work together to be sure the monies go where most needed. “We see this as an ongoing effort,” said Good. “With Ian behind us and the area beginning the long road to recovery, folks are going to have needs for a long time and will very much appreciate the support of others in our industry.” The MIA kick-started the fund with a $2,500 donation and several others jumped aboard, building the fund to almost $14,000.00 as the effort is launched. Captain’sCorner with Captain Ray Markham Fish get very spooky this time of year, coming off the new moon and heading toward Halloween. Read more for some tricks that might possibly give you some treats. OFFSHORE/ NEARSHORE Anglers looking to push offshore have not been finding a lot of good weather windows, but water temps have begun to fall, making fish begin to move and become more energetic. Big rod-bending action with amberjacks beyond 120-feet will come to a halt when the season for them closes at the end of this month. The largest have come from deep water, but smaller AJ’s are around wrecks inside of that 120-foot mark if you search for them. Again, that deep water scenario might be worth looking for blackfin tuna and some wahoo that have been in some fishing reports recently. Nearshore waters inside of 100-feet anglers have been catching mangrove, lane, and vermilion snappers. For the recreational anglers still targeting red snapper, some have been caught on those weekend stints that remain. Water temperatures have been running between 74 and 80 degrees, but this week, with the warmed up days, we’ve seen the upper end of that more often. While early morning anglers are seeing some good action with Spanish mackerel, their big cousins, the king mackerel have been fewer in numbers. Most anglers targeting kings are finding them in deep water wreck areas and are
caught while drifting or slot trolling live pinfish, big threadfins, blue runners, or Spanish mackerel. Hogfish action began to heat up just after the cold front last week. This week’s weak front barely moved the thermometer, and dropped only a trace of rain. Humidity levels rose a bit, and a bit more wind left waters choppy offshore and stirred up inshore. Nearshore waters are producing some red grouper that remain closed. INSHORE Action inshore was somewhat disappointing for some anglers looking to get some grand slams around the new moon but good for others. Many area waters were very stirred up with turbidity and algae. On a positive note, more trout are being caught from Tampa Bay south. Capt. Rick Grassett is seeing better action with trout, Spanish mackerel, jack crevalle and some others while fly fishing deep grass areas of Sarasota Bay from New Pass to Longboat Pass. Anglers fishing with me aboard my Action Craft, Flat Back II had some action this week with trout from the Manatee River north to Port Manatee using CAL Jigs with Shad tails. Capt. John Gunter, out of Palmetto, was also finding limits of decent trout on live bait. Capt. Rick Gross, of Fishy Business Charters, had some anglers onboard this week catching snook, redfish, and bluefish, but as an added bonus, one redfish had a CCA STAR tag. While the tournament is over, an angler who is registered for
with Captain Rick Grassett You may find blues, Spanish mackerel and pompano mixed with trout on deep grass flats this month. You should also find larger trout in skinny water along with reds. Snook will stage around bars and on shallow flats as they make their move towards winter areas. Action in the coastal gulf with false albacore, tripletail, Spanish mackerel, blues and more should explode! Snook and reds remain closed to harvest south of State Rd 64 in Manatee County on the west coast of Florida, south to the south bank of Gordon Pass in Collier County. Reds and snook are catch and release only in that zone until May 31, 2022. Spotted Seatrout has reopened in that zone with a 3 fish per person, bag limit and a 6 fish boat limit. Trout must be from 15”-19” with one allowed per vessel over 19”. Full regulations and details can be viewed at https://myfwc.com/ . You should find snook staging around docks and bridges in the ICW and along sand bars and in potholes on shallow flats. They may be along mangrove shorelines when the tide is high. I like CAL jigs with 3” and 4” shad tails and surface walking top water lures like the DOA “PT” in shallow water for snook. CAL jigs with shad tails or jerk worms, DOA TerrorEyz, DOA Shrimp and small white flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow, will work well around dock and bridge fender lights. Fish the strongest tides for the best action. Reds will spread out on shallow grass flats in November. You should find them along bars, in potholes or around docks. Look for them along mangrove shorelines when the tide is high, but they are just as likely to be roaming with mullet schools in shallow

water. CAL jigs with shad tails, grubs or jerk worms and gold spoons should work well for reds in shallow water. Fly anglers may score with lightly weighted flies, such as Clousers, spoon flies or my Grassett Flats Minnow fly. You may also find big trout along with reds in shallow water this month. The same lures and flies that you use for snook and reds in shallow water will also work for trout. You’ll also find trout on deep grass flats in water from 3’ to 7’ deep. I like to drift and cast quartering ahead of my drift with CAL jigs, DOA Deadly Combos or weighted flies on sink tip fly lines to locate trout. In addition to making a series of drifts to find fish, look for baitfish on the surface or birds to find them. You may also find blues, Spanish mackerel, flounder or pompano on deep grass flats this month. The techniques to find them is the same as for trout, although blues and Spanish mackerel may feed on the surface making them easier to find. Likewise with pompano, that may skip on the surface when you run or drift past them. When that happens, circle back upwind and drift back through the area, casting ahead of your drift. I like a 1/16 or 1/8-ounce chartreuse CAL jig head with a gold grub for pompano. You’ll need to add wire or heavy fluorocarbon when toothy fish are around to keep them from biting you off. You may find flounder on a mixture of grass and sand, particularly on the edges of bars or in potholes. There should be good action in the coastal gulf with false albacore (little tunny), Spanish and king mackerel, blues, tripletail or cobia. Look for Spanish mackerel, blues or false albacore

West Central Florida Southwest Coast the current year’s tournament can win a $1,000 prize package from CCA Florida. But that’s only if they are registered. Capt. Jimmy Huddleston, fishing out of the Ozona Fish Camp has been putting his clients on some nice reds and snook as well as some nice tripletail. The vast expanses of seagrass and the clean water in the area are a big draw to bait fish that bring predators like these gamefish. Early mornings around passes from Sarasota to Tarpon Springs are the right time to head to the beaches for some action with Spanish mackerel. While out there, pay special attention to swim buoys off the beaches and stone crab trap markers and lines for tripletail. Live shrimp are the top baits for these fish, but small jigs and artificial shrimp such as the 2.75 DOA Shrimp suspended under a popping cork with a 2-foot leader will work their magic. Southwest Florida feeding on the surface to find them. Diving terns or terns hovering just above the surface of the water and moving fast will give their presence away if they aren’t on top. CAL jigs with shad tails and jerk worms and top water plugs will work well. Fly anglers should score with small white flies, Ultra Hair Clousers, poppers or Crease flies. Look for tripletail around crab trap floats and cast DOA Shrimp, CAL jigs with shad tails or DOA TerrorEyz to them. Cobia may also be found around crab trap floats, swimming on the surface or over structure. They will require medium-heavy spinning tackle or at least a 9-weight fly rod. Larger baits like DOA Baitbusters, CAL jigs with 5½” jerk worms or the DOA SnakeKoil should work well for cobia on spinning tackle. Fly anglers should score with wide profile baitfish patterns. This a great month for fishing the flats or the coastal gulf. Since the action in the coastal gulf is seasonal and will end when it gets cooler, I like to fish there when conditions allow it. However, if that’s not for you or if conditions won’t allow it, there will be plenty of action for a variety of fish on shallow and deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay. Our natural resources are under constant pressure from red tides fueled by agricultural, industrial and residential runoff, toxic spills and discharges, freezes, increasing fishing pressure and habitat loss and degradation, please limit your kill, don’t kill your limit!

And for artificials, the topwater bite has been the best it has been all year. Since the FWC (Florida Wildlife Commission) has been leaving much greater amounts of hydrilla in the lake we’ve seen a fish population explosion over the last year. But no other time has it shown itself to be more evident then now. In many different areas throughout the lake the bass (big and small) have grouped up into massive schools chasing shad and shiners around endlessly feeding to fatten themselves up for the winter spawn. Double up on lake tohoThe fish remain congregated in ideal eel grass and hydrilla beds where the water is cleaner and also
on certain shell beds and brush piles offshore. The bait is the key during the fall. Whichever area you choose, if you’re not around the bait, you’re not around the bass either. So keep moving until you start catching them cause once you do, you’re liable to keep catching and catching. As always the live shiner bite has been the best and are what you’re going to get the most out of your day with. We’ve been averaging 25+ bass on 4 hour trips and 35+ on 6 hour or more trips with shiners. Lake Toho chunkBut if you’re into artificial fishing, that has been productive also. As stated earlier the topwater bite is at it’s best and the best thing to start with for the first hour or so, but it has extended far beyond that some day’s. The bass are keyed in on the bait right now so the lures you’re going to use are going to reflect that. Jerkbaits, Flukes, Rattletraps, and Spinnerbaits are the main lures. As long as you’re around the bait we’ve been

The mullet run is still in effect and the fishing is still epic. Beach fishing has been hit and miss due to the swells from the storm. When it is possible to fish the beach’s tarpon, jacks, bluefish, sharks, snapper and ladyfish have all been offering drag screaming action. Live mullet and Rapala skitter walks have been the bait of choice. Inshore the snook fishing continues to provide great action along sea walls, points and docks. Local spillways have been holding big snook as well, DOA terror eyz and DOA C.A.L. 4” jerk baits great baits to get snook feeding. The silver king have been schooled up inside the ICW, channel edges and mangrove shorelines have been the hot spots. Live mullet, pilchards and DOA Terror Eyz bait of choice. The tarpon are feeding on both sides of the tide, trick to get consistent bite, go light on leader.

October well known for its extreme high tides, makes for tough fishing at times. The high tides allow fish to venture far back into mangroves and structures in search of bait. The bonus to having the higher tides, strong out going tides forced most of the freshwater run off we have
received in our local area out to sea. Tarpon fishing is my favorite! The past week the tarpon went absolutely berserk. Pods off tarpon covered our local water ways crashing bait schools with a vengeance. Anglers experience phenomenal tarpon fishing from sun up to sundown, multiple hook ups made for craziness and team work to avoid break offs. The tarpon struck live baits and DOA terror eyz. Tarpon ranged in size from 10 to 80 pounds. Snook fish was consistent targeting structures and sea walls. High water made fishing for snook tough at times. Mid out going tide offered best shots at the linesiders using live baits. Jack crevalle schools covered beaches and much of the intercostal. Birds hovered over bait schools offered clue to the jacks location. Rapala skitter walks and live baits presented to jacks gets the drag screaming. Highs and lows! October can bring many emotions to an angler. Mullet run season has been going for weeks, fish get happy then stubborn, anglers get happy then frustrated. Weather is great, then rain and wind show up. All part of the game. Mother Nature can humble any angler, but keep pushing. Adapt and conquer! catching them. The fact that the fishing on Lake Toho is better than anyone of us could of predicted right now is an amazing sign for the up coming months. And just the thought of what the fishing might be like during the winter spawn in January, February, and March is getting me excited. If you’ve been planning to fish Lake Toho, now through March is sure looking to be one for the books.

Southeast Coast schools migrating. Snook have been really concentrated along sea walls. Bait gather along sea walls and pilings looking for cover, but the snook are lurking ambushing these schools as they try and settle along structures. Live baits, DOA C.A.L. 4” jerk baits rigged weedless get the strikes. Tarpon have been the favorite high flying act for anglers. Schools of tarpon patrol edges of channels and structures, busting mullet schools. Anglers have the opportunity to sight cast to the silver kings. Nothing beats watching a tarpon strike your bait with a vengeance. Live baits, DOA BaitBusters and Terror Eyz get the drag screaming. Remember always lead the fish and bow to the king! Huge schools of jacks, mackerel, bluefish and many other species lurk near mullet schools. These species take turns striking the bait schools and picking up scraps as other predator fish strike. Live bait, Rapala skitter walks and DOA BaitBusters all great baits to get the bite. Well that is the fishing report for the past week, hope you all enjoyed. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? CLEARWATER COAST GUARD AUXILIARY TEACHING BOATING SAFETY CLASSES ONLINE - 2022 - A New Way to Learn … A New Crop of Safe Boaters. With the advent of COVID-19, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was advised to discontinue in-person classes for the safety of the instructors and students. The good news is that the State of Florida (FWC) and the National Association of
Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved the Coast Guard Auxiliary to conduct online classes. These classes are not your standard webinar sessions where the students sit at their computers and are lectured at. And they’re not animated cartoon sessions where you have to keep pressing enter to get to the next topic. Classes are $40 per student and include the books, supplemental materials and course completion certificates. The classes being offered by the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary are conducted on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. In addition, because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! The boating safety class is also a requirement for many boaters in Florida. In the Sunshine State, anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, must successfully complete a boater safety course approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in order to operate any boat powered by more than 10 horsepower, and they are required to carry their boater education card with them when out on the water along with picture ID.
