Grouper Thai Curry Bisque

Ingredients 4 tablespoons olive oil

6-ounce Florida grouper fillets, cut into 1-inch pieces

cloves Florida garlic, peeled and coarse chopped

cup Florida shallots, thinly sliced

small dried red chiles

tablespoons fresh Florida ginger, minced

large Florida fennel bulb, cut into 1-inch pieces

cup Florida carrots cut into 1-inch pieces

tablespoon Thai green curry paste

cup unsweetened coconut milk

cups bottled clam juice or chicken stock

limes, juiced

cup fresh Florida cilantro leaves, chopped for garnish

Preparation

In a large soup pot, heat the oil over moderately high heat. Add grouper pieces and sauté until just browned. Remove from pan and set aside. Add the garlic cloves and shallots to the pan; cook over moder ately high heat until softened, 3-5 minutes. Add the chilies, ginger, fennel, carrots and curry paste. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables begin to soften, about 5 minutes. Add the coconut milk and broth and bring to a boil. Cover and cook over low heat, stirring a few times, until the carrots are tender, about 10 minutes longer. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Add the grouper and

Fort Myers Boat Show set to Kick Off 2023

Fort Myers, FL -- As the marine industry in Southwest Florida continues to rebuild and re-energize, there are many positive signs that things are returning to some semblance of normal more quickly than anyone could have hoped. Even in the hardest hit areas, like Pine Island marine businesses are beginning to get up and running. Still a long way to go but just to be open on any level, only one month removed from Ian, is amazing. Marinas on Ft. Myers Beach and Sanibel are making plans to rebuild as quickly as possible.

While downtown is not ready to hold the 50th Annual Fort Myers Boat Show on its traditional November dates, shifting to January 5th – 8th should be perfect timing for the marine industry and for Southwest Florida. “We walked the boat show site in downtown this week and feel very comfortable that the city will be ready to welcome us in January,” said show manager Kyle Good. “It was unreal to watch videos of several feet of water flowing through downtown streets, yet now we see more restaurants and stores reopening every day and have no doubt that January is going to work very well. The mayor, city manager, and city staff are committed to making the boat show the first of many major downtown events in 2023.”

Marine businesses are very supportive and exhibit space is nearly full. There will be no in-water displays as the City Yacht Basin suffered extensive damage and is closed. Several in-water exhibitors will be showing boats on land and others with larger boats plan booth displays inside the convention center for now. The Caloosa Sound Convention Center and adjacent Luminary Hotel suffered only minor damage, Centennial Park and streets along

the waterfront are in good shape. Completion of the new amphitheater provides additional exhibit space to accommodate dealers who traditionally display in-water.

“We are looking forward to this show,” said Tom Papesh from York Road Marine on Pine Island. “Our employees have been amazing, working non-stop to get the boat yard open. This week we pulled out our last damaged boat that was about 300 yards back in the mangroves. I cannot believe how everyone on the island has pulled together and can’t wait to get to this show and let everyone know that we are open and ready to sell some boats.”

Tom Hansen of The Boat House based in Cape Coral and Vice President of the Marine Industries Association is also excited about moving the show to January. “It is important to our industry, to downtown Ft. Myers, and our businesses that the show has been rescheduled. I expect to see plenty of enthusiasm from show visitors and our sales team is looking forward to starting the new year with a successful show. We very much appreciate the efforts of the city and convention center to shift things around to make this happen.”

The Fort Myers Boat Show, owned by the Marine Industries Association of Southwest Florida and Tampa Bay is the main funding source for the association’s many lobbying, marketing and promotion efforts.

Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. After successful inspection you are awarded a vessel safety check sticker which is affixed to your vessel near your state registration sticker. ONLINE - 2022 - A New Way to Learn … A New Crop of Safe Boaters. With the advent of COVID-19, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was advised to discontinue in-person classes for the safety of the instructors and students. The good news is that the State of Florida (FWC) and the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved the Coast Guard Auxiliary to

Classes are $40 per student and include the books, supplemental materials and course completion certificates. The classes being offered by the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary are conducted on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. In addition, because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! The boating safety class is also a requirement for many boaters in Florida. Fall Snook

The old myth that snook shut down during cold weather holds true when the water temperature drops down below 65 degrees. Capt. George, a good friend, and part of the Fishing Adventures Florida TV show has a technique on how to catch them during the cold months.

Capt. George invited me along to go after some big winter snook using his technique, and before he could finish his invitation, I asked him when and where. We set a time and place, agreeing not to show any of his favorite fishing spots.

Wednesday morning arrived and the winds were blowing from the northwest with temperatures in the mid 60’s and dropping as the cold front approached. Capt. George explained that his technique works best with a falling tide and the water temperature no lower than 60 degrees.

His method is to troll channels using one of favorite snook lure MirrOlure M30MR-18, medium runner. We picked a black back and gold sided one, tied to 30-pound test leader about 36 inches long using a 7-foot medium action spinning rod and reel combination.

A short trip from the boat ramp and we were ready to fish. As we entered the first channel, we cast the lures about 25feet behind the boat and held the rod outward and down as if they were outriggers. The secret

is to keep the tip of the rods down and away from the boat and watch the tips of the rods for movement from the lure. Lures have a wobbly movement and in some cases the lure can pick up some bottom trash and will stop the wobbling or come to the surface.

By trolling slowly through the edge of the channel the chance of catching snook will increase for two reasons. The bottom of the channels is muddy and hold water temperature higher than surrounding waters, causing the snook to move into deeper water and second, as the tide drops, they are forced away from the shallows and rocks and down toward the edge of the channels.

After a few minutes of trolling, our first hit was a small 8- pound snook, and as we made our turn into the other side of the channel, I had a hard tug. For a minute I thought I had struck rock, but the rock moved, and I realized this was a very large snook. Capt. George popped the motor out of gear and suggested I put a little more pull into catching this large snook or take the chance of losing him as he made a dash for the nearest rock or dock. Shortly afterward, I had him at the side of the boat, ready to give up the fight.

We were back at the dock by midday not only with the largest snook weighing in at 12pounds. That day Capt. George made me a believer in trolling for snook.

Where to troll:

1. Residential channels that are at least 5-foot deep at low tide.

2. Main channels leading to marinas.

3. The channels that run along the docks are best if away from boat traffic.

4. Edges of Little Manatee River.

5. Channel leading into Bishop Harbor.

When: I find this method works best ahead of a cold front or anytime the water temperature holds below 68 degrees. Like I said falling tide is best a falling tide or midway through an incoming tide.

Where: Residential channels.

Tackle suggested for best results.

• 7-foot medium action rod.

• Medium size spinning reel.

• 30-pound test braided line.

• 30-pound test fluorocarbon leader.

• Silver and black diving lure.

• MirrOlure model M30MR-18.

What to look for:

• Clean water

• Water depth of at least 8-foot.

• Structurer this means from rocky bottom to concrete blocks left from old construction.

Sheepshead are typically really active behind storms like this when the water is murky and stirred up. We should see those sheepshead very active around our docks Piers bridges and jetties behind hurricane Nicole. Typically, lighter tackle and minimal weight is a good idea to target the sheepshead. Also, with the cold front coming on the second half of the weekend that will further congregate the sheepshead on the local structures.

Snook fishing is one of those unique things that will get more active when the water gets nasty and the storms coming through a lot of anglers were able to take advantage of that fact and catch a lot of snook that got fired up during hurricane Nicole’s passing. We also will see those snuck active behind the storm once waters calmed down and clear up a lot of those fish will be moving further back into the Bay getting out of the passes on the beaches. Especially with the next cold front as water temperature continues to drop the days get shorter that will push a majority of fish back into the rivers, creeks, bayous, and upper Bay areas.

Redfish have been cruising back into the passes pretty consistently we’re seeing a lot of red fish start to get a little bit more congregated around local mangrove shorelines and grass flats. Behind this big storm it should further congregate the red fish and they should be easily found once waters calmed down and clear up I would imagine their congregation numbers will be strong. Also this storm will

flush some mullet those mullet will get together in big schools and you’ll find some big bruiser large red fish following those schools of mullet trying to take advantage of prey items that get scared out of their hiding places from the big schools of mullet foraging in the grass.

Flounder action has been great recently prior to the storm on the backside once waters calmed down and clear up the flounder should regain their activity. Just keep in mind flounder our not open until December 1st so you can only catch and release them for the remainder of November. They love to hang out on the downside side of local structures from artificial reefs to rock piles to bridges to docks and almost any structure in between including grass lots and oyster bars. They love live shrimp mud minnows even small pin fish for live bait or slowmoving soft plastics or swim baits and sometimes even jerk baits if you’re able to get them down low remember flounder are on the bottom ambushing baits that travel right along or on the bottom.

Pompano action has been picking up around the area especially in those sandy passes along our local jetties our sandier areas of channel and anywhere those Pompano can cruise in cleaner clearer water looking for crustaceans. However, behind the storm most of our water is

not going to be clear and it makes it difficult to find the Pompano in any good concentrations. However, if you’re able to find pockets of cleaner water you’ll find good numbers of Pompano.

Black drum are still active around the area they tend to do pretty well when the water gets murky and they’re one of those fish that kind of proliferate and get more excited when the salinity level is low behind big rains. A lot of time big rain event will push a lot of those black drum out of the Back Bay out of the bayous out of the top of the Bay Area and push them closer to the passes and closer to areas we more frequently fish.

Shark fishing around the area has slowed a bit because of the cooling water but locals are still finding plenty of good shark action in Tampa Bay and along our beaches mostly at night and this recent full moon brought plenty of beach shark fishing and Bay shark fishing action.

Mackerel are still prolific in the inshore waters we’re seeing a lot of mackerel at the mouth of Tampa Bay around our local Bay Area bridges and some of our fishing Piers. Macro love fast moving water where bait is present and prolific. Mackerel mainly chased fast moving flashy lures like trolling spoons casting spoons or lip diving plugs with a little bit of shimmer.

Sailfish are here and we are starting to catch multiples every day now. Although we have had a good summer run of sailfish, it was mostly one or two sailfish a day. Now we are in the season of catching 3 to 5 sailfish on average per day and also with the possibility of releasing double digits on any given day. It sure makes it more exciting knowing that after you catch your first sailfish of the day, there is a great possibility of catching more throughout the day.

The great sailfish action has also been coupled with a very late run of mahis. The mahis we are now catching on the edge while kite fishing for sailfish have been decent in size, ranging from 5 pounds to 25 pounds. We have had days catching 20 or so mahis per day and have also heard of guys catching 30 to 50 mahis a day. Those numbers are more common in the summer but they are usually much smaller fish (schoolies). So right now while kite fishing on the edge, not only can you catch a trophy billfish, but you can also catch

plenty of fish to bring home for dinner.

Swordfishing during the day has also been very good. Unfortunately we have missed out on this bite as we have been mostly fishing on the edge. We did have two night sword trips but they were not very successful at all. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but although the daytime swordfishing has been good, the night swordfishing has really slowed down.

One of the trips we had one bite that we missed and the second trip we never had a bite. Both trips we had great drifts, great bait and put in long hours but to no avail. I think we will have to put the night sword trips on the back burner for a while until I hear of some positive reports. Both trips we went on, we only saw one other boat all night.

On the other hand, the daytime sword bite has been very good with a lot of boats coming back with swordfish on almost

There’s an abundance of fine fishing to choose from, which is why December is my Number Two favorite time of year to fish in the Florida Keys. Number One is the month of May. Come back and read our May article to find out why.

As the waters to the north chill, wintertime fish visitors crowd the reefs, wrecks and bayside. And there’s something for everyone.

Sailfish probably tops most people’s list as the fish to target. The key to catching sailfish is live bait, and the primary live bait to use is ballyhoo.

Start your day of sailfish fishing by catching your ballyhoo first thing in the morning on the patch reefs and shallow grassy areas. To get the ‘hoo to the boat, chum the waters with Bionic doubleground. Catch them by using hair hooks, small bits of shrimp and squid or by throwing a cast net on them.

Take great care when boating the ballyhoo. Try not to touch them too much between catching them and placing them in the live well. The most effective baits are those that have suffered the least amount of damage.

Once you’re loaded up with ballyhoo, head out to the deep edge of the reef in 100 to 130 feet of water or wherever you find a good, clean water break. Stagger the baits out behind the boat and drift parallel to the reef, waiting for the sailfish to find the ballyhoo. If your ballyhoo jumps out of the water, get ready for the sailfish bite.

When sailfish fishing, the

While waiting for the sailfish, quite often you’ll get bites from other wintertime visitors, such as blackfin tuna and dolphin,plus toothy critters that include king mackerel and wahoo. For the toothy ones, include a short trace of #6 wire to prevent breakoffs.

The main reef line is where you’ll find the best yellowtail and mutton snapper action. The 40- to 60-foot depths are typically a good starting point. This area should be alive with yellowtail snappers along with the reemergence of nice black groupers, mutton snappers and even some cobias.

Establish a quality chum slick and let the fish come to you. The yellowtails are best caught using small pieces of ballyhoo or shrimp. For the muttons and groupers, use heavier conventional tackle with live baits, such as pilchards, ballyhoo or pinfish.

The patch reefs come into their own this time of year, with lots of action on mangrove snappers, keeper size yellowtails and red groupers. The same tactics employed for yellowtails on the reef work here, but you’re fishing in much shallower water at 20 to 25 feet.

Live bait is key for the king mackerel and cobia. These bayside kings are typically less fussy than the ones on the Atlantic and will happily eat pinfish as will the cobia. Just remember to use a trace of #6 wire to prevent bite-offs from the kingfish.

The pompano, snappers and Spanish mackerel will all readily eat live shrimp. While fishing for these, you’ll also find plenty of bluefish and jack crevalle.

For those interested in bigger fish on light tackle, sharks await you en masse. Blacktips, spinners, bulls, black noses and the occasional lemon all respond well to chunks of jack crevalles, bluefish, bluerunners. Sharks are great fun on light spin or conventional tackle.
