Grilled Florida Shrimp with Mango and Sweet Chili Sauce

Ingredients

large Florida shrimp, peeled and deveined

Florida mangoes, peeled and cut into ½ inch squares

tablespoons Florida sugar cane syrup

cup sweet chili sauce

lime, juiced

tablespoon fresh ginger, grated

tablespoon fresh mint, chopped fine

cup scallions, sliced fine

small bamboo skewers, soaked in water for at least 1 hour Cooking oil spray for grilling Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Directions: 1. Soak the bamboo skewers in water for at least one hour (this reduces the chance of the skewers burning).

Combine the sweet chili sauce, lime juice, ginger, and mint in a small bowl. Slice the scallions and set aside.

On a clean surface place a mango square in between the tail and top of a shrimp. Insert the bamboo skewer through the shrimp and mango. Repeat the skewering process until all shrimp are skewered, store in the refrigerator until ready to grill. Pre-heat a charcoal grill and cook the shrimp and mango skewers. When the shrimp is close to being cooked through, glaze with the sweet chili sauce. Sprinkle with the sliced scallions and serve.

ELCO Sponsors All-Electric Fishing Toutnament

Anglers, northern Georgia means small lakes, fierce largemouth bass and an exciting tournament schedule. The club’s recent event was sponsored by Elco and held in Rutledge, Georgia, at Hard Labor Creek, an electric-propulsion-only reservoir. Nineteen two-person teams vied for the top honors, with anglers Scott Edwards and Josh Kaufman winning in a 17’ RockProof Boats aluminum center console powered by an Elco EP-50 electric outboard motor.

One of the many lakes that were created when Georgia expanded its drinking water reserves in the 1990s, Hard Labor Creek Reservoir is nearly five miles long and off limits to gasoline-powered boats. The watercooled, clean-running Elco EP-50 provided a competitive advantage to Edwards and Kaufman by delivering propulsion comparable to a traditional 50 hp outboard.

Paired with lithium-ion batteries, the powerful motor drove the fully-rigged center console at

over 25 mph, getting the team to their hotspot and wetting their lines before the competition arrived. “We blasted off at 7 a.m. and were fishing less than 10 minutes later, four miles away—as far as you can go from the boat ramp,” said Edwards. “We caught a really nice fish on our second cast and had our fivefish limit by 8:30, long before we even saw another boat.”

The Hard Labor Creek tournament saw stiff competition. Edwards and Kaufman brought in five bass with a total weight of 17.83 lbs., a mere 11 oz. more the second-place finishers. They had one fish weigh-in at 5 lbs. while another team landed a trophy largemouth bass over 8 lbs.

Edwards, also one of the organizers of the Hard Labor Creek tournament, recognizes the importance of Elco’s support of tournament fishing and their involvement in High Voltage Bass Anglers. “Sponsoring this event meant a lot to local anglers,” he said. Elco provided food for the event and an array of prizes.

“The fishing is really good in these electric-only lakes,” said Edwards. He points to restrictions and monitoring required of drinking water reservoirs that maintain exceptional water quality. “Fish thrive in that kind of water,” he added, while fewer boats and anglers also make larger fish less hook-shy.

High Voltage Bass Anglers is dedicated to the promotion of tournament bass fishing in northern Georgia. Because of many lakes’ proximity to fertile farmland, runoff nutrients accelerate the growth of largemouth bass, often weighing up to 16 lbs. OFFSHORE/ NEARSHORE - Water temperatures at Egmont Key have dropped 6 degrees in the past week, down to 75-degrees on Thursday. Look for that to fall even more as this cold front that hit the region this week passes, and cool air moves southward. Breezy conditions could have gag grouper push back to structure and hold until it passes, but after it does, expect a good bite to turn on. At the same time, these fish will be moving toward shallower waters. Some of the top reports for big gags has been from anglers working depths beyond 100-feet, but recently, good reports from anglers catching gags have come from depths ranging from 50-to 80-feet while fishing areas of structure and hard bottom. Top baits have been threadfin herring and live pinfish.

Capt. William Toney, our Big Bend Action Spotter reported a wave of Spanish mackerel moving through the Nature Coast area around Homosassa and Crystal River. You can expect the arrival of those fish here in short order with this weekend’s cooler weather. Trolling Huntington Drone Spoons or Clark Spoon Squids at about 3-knots will garner some fish for the cooler. The artificial reefs off Pinellas and hard bottom off Sand Key have traditionally been good areas for catching mackerel. As with grouper, they will seek baitfish that will hold on structure and hard bottom. Working around these areas will be a good bet for each of these species. For anglers without bottom machines, look for diving birds around bait schools, and stone crab traps and the floats that mark their locations for some current spots for these fish. If trolling isn’t your thing and bottom dropping is, bring plenty of live shrimp and some frozen chum blocks. Anchor up-tide of stone crab traps and deploy chum blocks, shaking them every 5 minutes or so to get a chum slick going. Fish will begin to come up

into your chum slick. Live shrimp will lure mackerel, gag grouper and red grouper (closed), hogfish, and a variety of snappers.

Note: Lane snapper season closed at the beginning of the week. They have been caught in nearshore waters lately, so be sure to release these fish. Also, be sure to bring a venting tool and descending device in the event you bring fish up that are bloated and experiencing barotrauma. Most often this occurs in depths beyond 50-feet, so be prepared to properly release unwanted fish.

INSHORE - Water temperatures inshore have been ranging from 73-to 78-degrees in our region. These temperatures offer prime time for topwater lure fishing. Overcast days with some wind are prime for topwater fishing. Lures like MirrOlure’s Top Dog or 5M prop bait, Rapala Skitterwalk, and Storm Chug Bug are a few local favorites for anglers fishing for speckled trout and snook. Occasionally, you will find redfish following up in the wake of these lures and crashing them, making for some explosive action. Less than two weeks remain for snook season in our region. With the most recent cool down, snook have begun migrating into creeks, canals, into deeper backcountry areas with dark bottoms, and up rivers. As water temperatures drop below 70, look for snook to hold in deep water of rivers and creeks, typically in the outside of bends of these areas. During high pressure with bright blue skies, consider using slow-sinking, shallow diving, or suspending lures such as the 17MR MirrOlure MirrOdine, the Berkley Juke, or Rapala Twitch ‘N Rap.

Upper Tampa Bay has produced some good action with redfish and snook lately as well as the area near the St. Pete./Clearwater Airport. Cockroach Bay and the South Shore from Ruskin to Joe Bay continues to be productive for anglers looking for grand slams with snook, trout, and redfish.

Pompano have been in the dock talk lately as a few anglers in the know are catching some on Doc’s Goofy Jigs. Seminole resident, “Doc”, Bob Hartkopf, celebrated his 88th birthday Wednesday, November 30th building these lures one at a time. They’ve been a mainstay for anglers who target pompano, however, these lures have been successfully used to catch hundreds of different species of fish.

Sheepshead action continues to improve steadily around docks, bridges, piers, and on rockpiles up and down our coast. Live fiddler crabs, sand fleas, barnacles, and shrimp are top baits for these fish that are notorious for stealing baits off hooks. Thus, the nickname “convict fish”, with their black and white strips suits them well. Action with these fish will improve considerably over the next 4 to 5 months as the move toward their spawning period in late winter/ early spring.

FRESHWATER - This is one of my favorite times of the year to fly fish for bass and bluegill. While incoming windy cold fronts can put a damper on a fly fishing day, particularly for new fly casters, these days might be excellent to sharpen your skills for punching flies through the wind to your target. If you’re fishing around lots of overhanging trees or mangroves, it can be costly in terms of flies lost to heavy cover. For these days, it might be best to find an open field and set out targets to cast at with varying angles to the direction of the wind.

Fishing Tournaments:

Hurricane Ian blasted through our area on September 28th, with fury we have never seen in past storms. Its surge of 7.5 feet here in our location, wiped out nearly everything, and did damage to both of our boats. The inshore (bay) boat remains in the shop for repairs, but we have managed to get the offshore (gulf) boat up and running.

I ventured out in that boat on 11/4/22, for the first time since the storm, with Jeff Flemington and three of his friends. As luck would have it, after a period of time with calm winds and seas following the storm, the winds picked up to 15 to 20 knots for today, and seas were choppy. Between that and the fact that debris still litters our waterways, it was slow heading out to the Spring, and we ventured no further than that. The guys had fun using squid to catch and release some good-sized blue runners, which are known for fighting hard. But that was about all that was biting that close in. We saw abundant live turtles, which was an encouraging sight—much more encouraging than the destruction we observed on the way out. Hogue channel is littered with cars and trailers, along with much other assorted debris.

In other potentially bad news, I did observe an algae bloom, brownish in color, and probably predictive of red tide, which is moving south from the

Sarasota area. It is good to be back on the water, but it will take a while before things normalize. I have a few gulf trips planned for this month and, on calmer days, I will be able to venture out further and hope for some better variety of fish, along with lessening debris and gradual normalization of the habitat.

Having not tested the boat again since that nearshore run on 11/4, long-time customer and friend, Mike Connealy, along with his brother, Paul, consented to do a catch-andrelease trip with me on Tuesday, 11/15, to scope out the red tide, as well as conditions well offshore to 36 miles west of New Pass, which is the farthest reach thee offshore boat has gone since we recovered it after Ian. Fortunately, the boat ran well, though its gel coat still doesn’t look too pretty in spots. We did see red tide nearshore and out to about 20 miles, where we saw lots of dead bait-fish. Further out, around the 36 mile spot, we had good success. Most of what we caught, using squid, would have had to be released anyway due to being shorts or out-of-season, such as the twenty-five keepersized lane snapper, with their season now closed. Likewise for the 23-inch red grouper. A 22-inch gag grouper was a couple inches short of keeper-size, and an 18inch black grouper was also short. The only potential keepers we

released were fifteen grunts in the 13-to-14-inch range, and three 14-inch yellowtail snapper.

On Friday morning, 11/25, I fished in various spots to 18 miles west of New Pass with Jerry Jenkins and his grandson, Lucas. They used squid to catch and release a dozen keepersized, but out-of-season lane snapper to 14 inches, along with three triggerfish to 14 inches. They also released seven red grouper shorts to 18 inches, as well as a 16-inch gag grouper. As for fish tacos, fourteen keeper grunts to 12-inches saved the day. I spotted a red tide bloom about six miles off the beach, right around the artificial reefs, but saw none of that further out.

Saturday morning, 11/26, I fished a8 miles west of New Pass with Jeff and Beth Heimrich, their son Tanner, daughter Maddie, and Uncle John. They used squid to catch and release twelve triggerfish shorts to 14 ½ inches, three lane snapper, and an 18-pound goliath grouper. They boxed twenty-five nice sized grunts.

50TH ANNUAL FORT MYERS BOAT SHOW – JANUARY 5-8, 2023HISTORIC DOWNTOWN RIVERFRONT -- As the marine industry in Southwest Florida continues to rebuild and re-energize, there are many positive signs that things are returning to some semblance of normal more quickly than anyone could have hoped. Even in the hardest hit areas, like Pine Island marine businesses are beginning to get up and running. Marinas on Ft. Myers Beach and Sanibel are making plans to rebuild as quickly as possible. There is still a long way to go, and full recovery will take time and patience, but it is rewarding to see how far the area has come in a short time. While downtown was not ready to hold the 50th Annual Fort Myers Boat Show on its traditional November dates, shifting to January 5th – 8th should be perfect timing for the marine industry and for Southwest Florida. “We have visited the boat show site in downtown several times and feel very comfortable that the city will be ready to welcome us in January,” said show manager Kyle Good. “It was unreal to watch videos of several feet of water flowing through downtown streets, yet now we see more restaurants and stores reopening every day and have no doubt that January is going to work very well. Lake Tohopekaliga - Freshwater Fishing Report

The upcoming fishing season on Lake Toho is our peak season for the year mainly because this is the beginning of the spawning months here in Central Florida. November through March is when Lake Toho produces the vast majority of trophy-sized bass over 10 lbs and it is also our peak season overall for bass fishing here in Central Florida.

The fishing is so good during this time of year mainly because this is the time that the bass are in their pre-spawn and spawning stages which produce some of the best catches and some of the biggest bass during trips. Averaging 20 to 30 bass per day and good chances daily at trophy size bass over 10 lb throughout this period. Lake Toho produces more bass over 10 pounds than any other body of water in the nation and is considered the premier trophy bass fishing lake throughout the USA.

The best methods for catching large numbers of bass as well as trophy bass over 10 lb are with the large golden wild

shiners which range between 6 and 10 inches in size. During this time of year the big Lake Toho lunker bass become keyed in on large golden shiners before they go on to beds and spawn. This gives bass Anglers the best chance of any time of year to catch their trophy bass of a lifetime. Artificial lures can also be productive if you have had a spell of good weather in between cold fronts but the wild shiners are always the the way to get your best chances at trophy size bass out of Lake Toho.

It is well known throughout the bass fishing community that this is our best time of year for fishing on Lake Toho for lunker sized bass, and this is also when our clients are looking to book trips with our captains to get their chance at a trophy bass. Because of this being our peak season we usually book up several weeks or even a month or so in advance with all of our nine captains. If you are looking to book it is recommended that you reserve your trip several weeks ahead of time or even a month or two ahead of time to ensure that we have one of our captains available for you on the day that works best for you. We are in fall fishing mode and our primary species are making their presence known. We have been catching sailfish or multiple sailfish on practically every single trip. The sailfish have been showing up and the sailfishing will get a lot better once a few cold fronts start rolling through. Typically, December is when the sailfishing kicks into high gear. We mostly fish live bait and kites which makes it extremely visual and exciting. There is nothing like seeing the fish eat the bait before you actually hook it. Besides sailfish, there have also been some decent mahis, kingfish, bonitos and an occasional wahoo.

Another fish making a strong showing have been swordfish. We have been lucky enough to have caught a swordfish on every single one of our trips the past few months. Although we haven’t gotten any big swordfish recently, that will change as we start doing more trips and the bigger fish start rolling through. Although everyone primarily

fish electric reels due to having your bait 1600 feet down, we use an electric/manual reel from Hooker Electric which allows us to crank or use the electric portion of the reel. We also can deploy a strictly manual reel for those looking to be IGFA compliant. We had a customer last month that needed a swordfish to complete his IGFA slam (catching all species of billfish) and we did this with a Penn 50W with a breakaway weight. We did get one that trip, and it was very rewarding for all of us.

Another species making a strong showing has been wahoo high speed trolling in Bimini. We haven’t taken any trips recently, but I am itching to go as the reports of 5 to 15 wahoo a day are coming in. Nothing quite like the scream of a wahoo’s first run especially when trolling at 15 mph. Wahoo fishing in Bimini usually starts in October and could last into March. I would say the best months though are NovemberJanuary.

I fished 8 miles west of New Pass with Jeff and Beth Heimrich, their son Tanner, daughter Maddie, and Uncle John. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. After successful inspection you are awarded a vessel safety check sticker which is affixed to your vessel near your state registration sticker. FLORIDA BOATER’S ID CARD - Don’t forget that “Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 is required to either have successfully completed a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved boating education course or have passed a course equivalency or temporary certificate examination and have in their possession a boating education ID card and a photo identification card before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 HP or more in Florida.” Identification cards for persons completing the course or the equivalency exam are good for a lifetime. Temporary Certificate exams are made available to the public through contractors. The temporary certificate is valid for 12 months from the issue date. ONLINE - 2022 - A New Way to Learn … A New Crop of Safe Boaters. With the advent of COVID-19, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was

Classes are $40 per student and include the books, supplemental materials and course completion certificates. The classes being offered by the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary are conducted on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. In addition, because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! The boating safety class is also a requirement for many boaters in Florida. In the Sunshine State, anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, must successfully complete a boater safety course approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in order to operate any boat powered by more than 10 horsepower, and they are required to carry their boater education card with them when out on the water along with picture ID. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license.
