New Yanmar Green Challenge 2050 Inspires Demonstration of Future-Proof Engine Capabilities at Workboat Show
New Orleans, LA (November 29,
2022) – Promising new benefits for its commercial customers, Yanmar integrates its extensive, reliable engine line-up with a new company commitment to advance technology to meet the environmental challenges of the future at this year’s International Workboat Show.
The Yanmar marine divisions will showcase a full range of light-duty, high-speed, and larger engines, offering versatility, output range and quality for various applications, including workboats, rescue and safety boats, fishing and passenger vessels, salvage/ towing, government service vessels, port authority boats and large offshore vessels.
In addition to the product line-up, Yanmar is demonstrating further capabilities specific to the commercial sector following the launch of the YANMAR GREEN CHALLENGE 2050 to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions in its business activities. The company, which has prioritized sustainability since its founding, will demonstrate how the initiative is steering product development and innovation, inspiring new fuel systems and concepts, and opening
up exciting opportunities for partnerships with OEMs with the joint aim to reduce environmental impact.
Kevin Carlan, President, Yanmar Marine International Americas, said: “The Workboat Show is always a key date in the diary for us to showcase Yanmar’s focus in the commercial sector. For the first time, we can combine our leading engine range with evidence of how new Yanmar technology and developments will impact our ability to work with and benefit our customers and partners in the years ahead. Rooted by the mission of developing carbon reduction technologies across land, sea and city, Yanmar is already at the forefront in the development of alternative fuels, trialing a hydrogen fuel cell concept boat and leading the way in designing dual-fuel marine engines. Further work continues in methane oxidation catalyst systems. We see many opportunities with our commercial customers in line with the YANMAR GREEN CHALLENGE 2050, such as working with OEMs to be their electric systems integrator. We are looking forward to introducing this new impetus into our discussions at the show.”
YANMAR GREEN CHALLENGE 2050 and new technology
Aiming to transform the company, YANMAR GREEN CHALLENGE 2050 declares its intention to eliminate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in its business activities and achieve zero environmental impact by circulating resources to realize a sustainable future.
Several projects and developments demonstrate progress in the marine sector, including:
• A field demonstration test for the maritime fuel cell system that incorporates hydrogen fuel cell modules from Toyota’s MIRAI automobile. The system was installed into Yanmar’s EX38A FC pleasure boat for field testing. Yanmar aims to verify specific issues and solutions in a maritime environment for the deployment of the maritime fuel cell system. The system is planned to be deployed to larger vessels by 2025. Yanmar was among the first companies to comply with environmental regulations with its development of dual-fuel marine engines.
• For the first time in the world, Approval in Principle was received for the Methane Oxidation Catalyst System from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) for Hitachi Zosen Corporation, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), and Yanmar Power Technologies Co. (YPT). The system reduces methane slip by placing a methane oxidation catalyst in an LNG fuel engine and oxidizing the methane. The project aims to further reduce the environmental impact of LNG fuel engines by achieving a methane slip reduction rate of more than 70% over a six-year period from FY2021 to FY2026 by combining a methane oxidation catalyst and engine improvements and verifying the design concept in actual vessels. • The establishment of HyEng Corporation, where Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., Yanmar Power Technology Co., Ltd., and Japan Engine Corporation will pursue joint development of world-leading marine hydrogen-fueled engines. The three companies will further advance their joint development activities
Boaters Helping Boaters, Hurricane Ian Relief Fund Moving Forward
In the days following Hurricane Ian, the desire to help was the impetus in establishing the Boaters Helping Boaters Fund and thankfully the fund has received over $60,000 in donations! Now, the emergency has passed, and reality is setting in that full recovery is going to be a long process. Resources and supplies are stretched to the limit, and everyone is impatient to get back to normal and back to business.
Dealers are pressed for room to service and display boats because lots are packed with customer owned boats that have no place to go. Many damaged boats have yet to be removed. The river and major waterways are mostly cleared, but debris removal in canals and smaller areas is just beginning, making it is still somewhat unsafe to be on the water in hardest hit areas. Boat ramps are being used to stage debris removal and are not expected to be open to the public in the foreseeable future.
Yet, most marine businesses are optimistic looking forward. Marinas and private docks will be rebuilt, damaged boats will be replaced, and marine businesses will be busy moving farther into 2023. The Ft. Myers Boat Show, traditionally held in November, has been moved to January 5th – 8th and is virtually sold out. Business will be back as strong as ever.
“Our concern is for the people in our industry dealing with the here and now,” said MIA Executive Director John Good. “They are hurting! Applications for relief were only recently made available and the response has been overwhelming. $500 checks will be in the mail soon and it will not be long before our fund is depleted. $500.00 may not seem like much in the big picture, but based on the comments we are receiving, it is very much appreciated, and every little bit helps. It is gratifying to see where these funds are going. Here’s a look at the
applicants received so far:
Marine Industry - 41, Fishing/Charter - 18, Marine Law Enforcement – 23”.
While applications are confidential, a few typical comments on the storm’s impact drives home the struggles many are dealing with.
• “Hurricane Ian destroyed our home and vehicles and place of business. Both of our boats survived. But there is no business to be seen right now.”
• “We lost everything we own. House had 70 inches of water in it and must be demolished. Lost my truck, my wife’s car, my patrol truck, my camper and my ATV. All the contents of the house were destroyed.”
• “Flooded home... truck... tvs... clothing... workboots... countless amount of loss...s taying with friends” “5 feet of water in house and a fire the next day. 3 daily driver vehicles were under water and totaled. Fire claim has been denied since they claim it was caused by the flood.”
• “Home flooded and vessels damaged. Funds would be used to repair vessels and supplement lost income due to lack of tourism during season.”
It is hoped the marine industry and others will continue to help see the effort through. Donations will be accepted with ticket sales in January at the Ft. Myers Boat Show and the St. Pete Boat Show, but it would be great to see the fund grow before the end of the year to brighten the holidays of more of those in need.
Tax deductible donations can be made on-line at www.oldsaltfishing.org/hurricane. Make checks to Old Salt Fishing Foundation (Hurricane Ian Relief in the notes). PO Box 8564. Madeira Beach, FL 33738

Boat Covers: How to Choose the Best Option
Imagine that you’ve just purchased a shiny new vessel and docked it at your local marina. As the years go by, it will undergo various temperature and humidity changes. And unfortunately, this wet-dry cycle of expanding and contracting will surely take a toll on your boat’s Gelcoat and wood brightwork.
Now, combine that with the reality of salty air, pollution, dust, and rodents. The result? Well, your beloved vessel will have taken quite a beating.
Unless, of course, you protect it with a boat cover. This simple investment can prevent many problems from wreaking havoc on your boat (faded and oxidized Gelcoat, bleached and cracked wood, mildew and mold – the list goes on).
If you aren’t sure which type of boat cover to purchase, don’t worry. In this blog post, we’ll help you make the best selection for your vessel, so you can protect it for many years to come.
Do I Need a Boat Cover?
What is a boat cover other than a shield from nature’s harshest elements? Protecting your boat from UV rays, debris, and inclement weather is key to prolonging its lifespan and maintaining its value.
In addition, boat covers will protect any possessions you keep within your boat from being stolen or destroyed.
The Ultimate Boat Cover Buying Guide
Do you need help navigating the various boat cover options? Our boat cover buying guide explains everything you need to know before making a purchase.
Storage Covers vs. Trailering Cover
Storage bag covers are designed to fit loosely around your rig. That’s because they protect boats when anchored (either at a dock or stored on a trailer).
On the other hand, trailer covers have a snug fit that is designed for traveling. They are reinforced in high-wear areas to withstand traveling at high speeds (like on a highway).
Fabric Selection
Boat cover fabrics need to be both breathable and water-repellent. In addition, they should be UV- and mildew-resistant. As you can probably guess, few materials make the cut.
We recommend sticking with coated synthetic fabrics. Specifically, pigment-dyed polyester has an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, breathability, water resistance, and UVray resistance.
Hot Shot™ is a great (and affordable) option if you need a recommendation. It is an acryliccoated polyester that is breathable, stain-, mildew, and UV-resistant. Urethane-coated, solution-dyed polyester fabrics and solutiondyed acrylics are also great.
Custom Boat Covers
Another boat cover option is to go the custom route. Semi-custom covers are designed to fit several makes/models of boats with the same hull style. Alternatively, custom covers are made for your boat’s precise make, model, and year.
As you can probably imagine, custom covers are significantly more expensive. However, you get what you pay for; they are easy to put on/ remove, trailer with and will last the longest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Below are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about selecting the right boat cover:
How Much Do Boat Covers Cost?
As we mentioned, custom boat covers are the most expensive, costing anywhere from $700 to $1,200. If you’re looking for a more affordable option, generic box covers are $50 to $150. However, be wary that the latter won’t fit very well, and they will have a shorter lifespan.
How Long Do Boat Covers Last?
Over time, boat covers become susceptible to normal wear and tear. As a result, they last about 7-12 years on average. Note that more expensive covers often last longer than average, and cheaper covers last shorter.
Is It Okay to Leave Your Boat Uncovered?
In short, the answer is no. Leaving your boat uncovered will damage its interior and expose it
www.TheMariner.com
to the sun’s harmful rays. When boats are left uncovered, they tend to lose value incredibly quickly.
How to Clean a Boat Cover?
You should wash your boat cover with mild soap and detergent. Begin by shaking off the dust, rinsing the dirt with a hose, and using compressed air for stubborn clumps of debris. Be careful not to use a scrub brush or bleach, as these will damage the cover. Additionally, avoid throwing it in the washer or dryer. Once you’re finished cleaning your boat cover, hang it on a line to dry.
How to Prevent Water from Pooling on Boat Cover?
Many boat owners struggle with water pooling on top of their boat covers. We recommend investing in a proper boat cover support system or frame to prevent this. These will also help keep the covers tight. If interested, you can have a support system professionally installed or purchase a DIY kit.
Conclusion:
Boat covers are an investment every boater should make. You’ll reduce the likelihood of damage by purchasing a high-quality, durable boat cover. After reading this post, we hope you’re ready to select the right boat cover for your vessel!

In Memoriam: Kenneth Ralph Brothwell 1944-2022
Kenneth Ralph Brothwell, 77 died on June 27, 2022 after a long illness. He was the husband of Ruth (Moore) Brothwell. Born in Bristol, CT on July 18, 1944, he was the son of the late Earle and Marion (Hotchkiss) Brothwell. In addition to his wife, Ken is survived by his three children, Karen B. Jubb of Clarendon, VT; Marti Correia (George) of East Hartford; and Adam Brothwell (Amber) of Bristol; and Ken’s sister Karen B. Dayton (Stanley) of Terryville. Other survivors include eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Ken graduated from Bristol Central High School in 1963. After school he joined the United States Marines and served during the Vietnam Conflict. After serving in the military, he lived and worked in Massachusetts, Vermont and then Florida.
Florida life for Ken began in Venice, FL in October of 1995. He took the position as the Publisher/Property Manager of The Florida Mariner Magazine. Ken was extremely happy to be
in Florida, near the beach and far away from the cold Vermont winters. Ken truly loved his job, and the people he worked with at The Florida Mariner. Boat shows were an added bonus of enjoyment of fun, where he was able to travel with fellow sales staff and conduct business all in one boat load. If it involved making connections and memories, Ken was on board. Boating puns intended – he would have loved it!
Ken’s smile and laugh were contagious, and he brought an upbeat atmosphere to the Mariner office! He always treated his staff like family and friends. In fact, the Brothwell annual staff Christmas parties were always filled with food, gifts, music, fun and laughs. They were always welcoming and warm, maybe with some Air Supply playing in the background at some point!
After retiring from The Florida Mariner in December 2007, Ken enjoyed riding his 1999 Harley-Davidson Road King, playing tennis, and volunteering at the Venice Health Park.
In 2016, a new career began for Ken when he began working at Publix on Venice Island. Ken enjoyed and thrived with every aspect of the “Publix Experience.” He was recognizable, and loved by employees and customers.
Unfortunately, along the way, Alzheimer’s and cancer entered Ken’s body and mind. True to his Marine Corp toughness, Ken fought back and maintained a good life for several years. Ultimately, he became mentally fatigued, and his body became totally exhausted. Ken finally made the decision to let go and let God take him home. His burial took place in a military cemetery in Florida. In his words, ‘Semper Fi and Keep Smiling!’
We fondly remember Ken and thank him for his service in the military and in his community. Our condolences go to his wife, Ruth, our former co-worker and friend as well.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. No record of any possible deficiencies will be reported to the USCG, state agency or any other authority. Want to know more about this complimentary Vessel Safety Check program? Contact Peter Burns at (772) 486-2684 or burnspet@aol.com. St. Lucie River Power Squadron, one of more than 300 squadrons nationwide, also offers safe boating classes to the public. Check on their website, www.slrps.org, when classes will resume. Information about the parent organization is available at www.usps.org.

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary
Local flotillas offer a variety of safety classes, including basic/introductory boating courses and safety courses, navigation, sailing and personal watercraft safety, among others.
Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved the Coast Guard Auxiliary to conduct online classes. These classes are not your standard webinar sessions where the students sit at their computers and are lectured at. And they’re not animated cartoon sessions where you have to keep pressing enter to get to the next topic.
Classes are $40 per student and include the books, supplemental materials and course completion certificates. The classes being offered by the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary are conducted on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. In addition, because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! The boating safety class is also a requirement for many boaters in Florida. In the Sunshine State, anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, must successfully complete a boater safety course approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in order to operate any boat powered by more than 10 horsepower, and they are required to carry their boater education card with them when out on the water along with picture ID. Contact the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Clearwater Flotilla, for boating safety classes at: www.clwboatingsafety.com or by email at clwtr.auxboating@gmail.com or call 727469-8895.

Putting the Heat on the Fish January weather determines what kind of fishing we do, and under normal conditions we should be in the low 40’s at night and high 60’s during the day. Using this as a guide line I am going to fish the warm water runoff at the Apollo Beach power plant at first light. My experience tells me the snook, redfish and trout are most active early in the morning as the sun rises, and as the surface water warms up the jack’s, sharks and catfish seem to take over.
Little Manatee river is brimming with action this month. Snook are in the creeks and cuts along the river, redfish and trout are looking for food, and jack’s are on the prowl for anything they can sink their teeth into.
I prefer using artificial baits in the winter months keeping me moving in search of the prey and at the same time teaching myself new spots that I would not tray during the summer. Soft baits I prefer Saltwater Assassinpaddle tails (P. Seed/Chartreuse Tail,Plum/ Chartreuse Tail, Chicken on AChain and Avocado/Red Tail)this time of year working them slowly along the banks and edges of drop-offs. I can cover more area and increase my chances of finding
fish. Look for holes along the mangrove line or points where the currents have dredged cuts or pockets.Producing any change in the depth of water will make a big difference to fish during the winter. Hard baits my go to has always been the MiirOlure 52M11 red head silver sides and white on top and bottom. Although this past year they introduced the SKINseries (CS17MR PIN, CS17MR PRD and CS85MR Mullet) and it’s been a killer for me. Early morning working them from the shallows and over the holes seems to produce the most action.
Live Baits shrimp works great this month, with a 1/0 circle hook and a 20-pound fluorocarbon leader about 36 inches long. Remember this time of year the water is extremely clear, so the light leader helpsin getting more strikes.
I use a small split shot placed about 4 inches from the hook, as this allows me to keep the bait close to the bottom where the fish are feeding. You can use the same method as fishing with artificial baits by working the shrimp along the bottom with a slow retrieve, which helps in locating where the fish are staging.
Sheepshead are one of my favorites during the winter months, as they prove to be great fighters on light tackle.
Feeding on
with Captain Dylan Hubbard
Sure hope Santa brought you that new rod and reel you asked for, because it’s time to put it to use!
We anticipate sailfish season will continue to be quite good on the reef, especially with the bumper crop of ballyhoo available for them to feed on. Up and down the reef, chasing sailfish that are spraying ballyhoo is common practice during January for guys in the know.
As saifishing is sight-fishing at its finest, a boat with a tower of some sort offers the best vantage for spotting fish. No tower? Try heading off the reef edge to the 100- to 150-foot depths and putting out a spread of four to six live ballyhoo while drifting a color change, current break or weed line. The live ballyhoo should attract the sailfish and lure them to your boat. No sailfish has ever passed up a live ballyhoo in the danger zone.
Among the sails, you may also encounter large blackfin tuna in the 15- to 20-pound class.
On occasion, dolphin, wahoo and king mackerel are roaming the same areas.
On the Atlantic wrecks, expect mutton snappers and amberjacks. Live ballyhoo is your prime bait, but pilchards or pinfish will also work.
On the main reef, the yellowtail snapper action can be hit or miss this time of year, depending on the weather patterns. The more frequent the cold fronts occur, the less likely the yellowtails are to cooperate. Should you luck out with a four- or five-day period of stable weather, drop everything and head straight for your favorite yellowtail spot.
The SeaSquared crews tend to fish for yellowtails in the shallower reef areas in 30 to 50 feet of water.
Standard size blocks of chum are all you need, as a smaller amount of food is required to hold their attention during the winter.
These areas also
mostly shrimp, fiddlers, small crabs and barnacles they are considered a great table fair, and some anglers even call them chicken of the sea.The big females prefer the deeper waters of the Tampa Bay, hanging around the ledges, wrecks and rock piles in anywhere from 12 to 30 feet of water and average in size from 4 to 12 pounds. Here I prefer to use medium tackle, a 7’6” rod medium action with a larger spinning reel with 20-pound test braided line and 25-pound test fluorocarbon leader tied with a loop knot to a number 1/0 Jhook. I use a Texas rig where the sinker slides on the leader just ahead of the hook. I also use a small glow soft bead because this keeps the sinker from hitting the knot and the glow beads seem to draw the attention of the larger fish.
Live shrimp, fiddler crabs, bloodworms and sand fleas are some of their favorite baits.
Smaller sheepsheads prefer docks and oyster bars in shallow water, so just downsize your tackle and enjoy catching a great fighting fish.

Fishing Tournaments:
contain plenty of king and cero mackerel, so prepare to fire up your smoker. Live ballyhoo or live pilchards will draw their interest.
You’ll find more consistent snapper action around the humps in Hawk Channel. Fresh shrimp and live pilchards are your baits of choice. Fish them on a jighead on the bottom for the best results.
There’s no telling what you may catch when that shrimp hits the bottom. Snappers, groupers, cobias, porgies, hogfish (which also must be released as that season is closed as well) plus Spanish, cero and king mackerel.
In the bayside waters, mangrove snappers and Spanish mackerel hang on the inshore wrecks and banks. Further out, you’ll find cobias, Goliath groupers, blacktip sharks and more, all responding to your efforts.

50TH ANNUAL FORT MYERS BOAT SHOW – JANUARY 5-8, 2023HISTORIC DOWNTOWN RIVERFRONT -- As the marine industry in Southwest Florida continues to rebuild and re-energize, there are many positive signs that things are returning to some semblance of normal more quickly than anyone could have hoped. Even in the hardest hit areas, like Pine Island marine businesses are beginning to get up and running. Marinas on Ft. Myers Beach and Sanibel are making plans to rebuild as quickly as possible. There is still a long way to go, and full recovery will take time and patience, but it is rewarding to see how far the area has come in a short time. While downtown was not ready to hold the 50th Annual Fort Myers Boat Show on its traditional November dates, shifting to January 5th – 8th should be perfect timing for the marine industry and for Southwest Florida. “We have visited the boat show site in downtown several times and feel very comfortable that the city will be ready to welcome us in January,” said show manager Kyle Good. “It was unreal to watch videos of several feet of water flowing through downtown streets, yet now we see more restaurants and stores reopening every day and have no doubt that January is going to work very well. The mayor, city manager, and city staff are committed to making the boat show the first of many major downtown events in 2023.” For more information visit www.fortmyersboatshow.com

Lake Tohopekaliga - Freshwater Fishing Report
The upcoming fishing season on Lake Toho is our peak season for the year mainly because this is the beginning of the spawning months here in Central Florida. December through March is when Lake Toho produces the vast majority of trophy-sized bass over 10 lbs and it is also our peak season overall for bass fishing here in Central Florida.
The fishing is so good during this time of year mainly because this is the time that the bass are in their pre-spawn and spawning stages which produce some of the best catches and some of the biggest bass during trips. Averaging 20 to 30 bass per day and good chances daily at trophy size bass over 10 lb throughout this period. Lake Toho produces more bass over 10 pounds than any other body of water in the nation and is considered the premier trophy bass fishing lake throughout the USA.
The best methods for catching large numbers of bass as well as trophy bass over 10 lb are with the large golden wild
shiners which range between 6 and 10 inches in size. During this time of year the big Lake Toho lunker bass become keyed in on large golden shiners before they go on to beds and spawn. This gives bass Anglers the best chance of any time of year to catch their trophy bass of a lifetime. Artificial lures can also be productive if you have had a spell of good weather in between cold fronts but the wild shiners are always the the way to get your best chances at trophy size bass out of Lake Toho.
It is well known throughout the bass fishing community that this is our best time of year for fishing on Lake Toho for lunker sized bass, and this is also when our clients are looking to book trips with our captains to get their chance at a trophy bass. Because of this being our peak season we usually book up several weeks or even a month or so in advance with all of our nine captains. If you are looking to book it is recommended that you reserve your trip several weeks ahead of time or even a month or two ahead of time to ensure that we have one of our captains available for you on the day that works best for you. Now is
with Captain Chris Johnson
Sure hope Santa is bringing you that new rod and reel you asked for, because you’ll definitely put it to use!
Among the sails, you may also encounter
large blackfin tuna in the 15- to 20-pound class.
These areas also contain plenty of king and
the time to start thinking about what day you would like to get on Lake Toho and catch the trophy bass of a lifetime and reserve your trip while we still have availabilities open for the day that you’re looking for.
Our captains are here to work for you and guide you to the best fishing experience that you’ve ever had in your life on Lake Toho located here in Kissimmee Florida just minutes from Disney World. So isn’t it high time that you get your chance at your trophy bass with AJ’s bass guides.

cero mackerel, so prepare to fire up your smoker.
