Pompano with Ratatouille

Ingredients 5 tablespoons olive oil, divided

cup yellow onion, chopped

cloves garlic, finely chopped

medium red tomatoes, chopped

small eggplant, diced

medium red bell peppers, diced

medium zucchini, diced

tablespoons fresh lemon juice

teaspoon salt

teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

tablespoon fresh basil, chopped

tablespoon parsley, chopped

(6-ounce) pompano fillets

Directions:

Heat 3 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and garlic; sauté 5 minutes until softened. Add tomatoes, eggplant, peppers and zucchini; lower heat to mediumlow.

Simmer until the vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally. Add the lemon juice, salt, and pepper; stir in the basil and parsley. Reduce heat and keep warm.

In a clean sauté pan, heat the remaining 2 tablespoons oil over medium-high heat. Add the fillets and cook 3-4 minutes on each side until cooked through.

Serve topped with the cooked vegetable ratatouille.

11th Hour Racing Team Announces Bluewater as Official Supplier for the Ocean Race

Stockholm, Sweden, December 20, 2022 –

Bluewater Group today announced it will become Official Supplier to the 11th Hour Racing Team for The Ocean Race 2022-23. Both entities share an intrinsic connection to the ocean and champion the message of the importance of innovation for a more sustainable future.

The partnership will see Bluewater install its high-performance hydration stations at each stopover in the 11th Hour Racing Team base, dispensing free purified water on demand. Each station utilizes Bluewater’s unique and patented SuperiorOsmosis TM technology, which can deliver up to 7,000 liters of purified water on demand per day, while removing chemicals, toxic metals, bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants such as microplastics.

The sailing team and Bluewater will work together to find permanent homes for the hydration stations at the end of The Ocean Race 2022-23.

Sea Machines and United States Coast Guard Partner to Bring Computer Vision Domain Awareness to Critical Missions

BOSTON; December 19, 2022 - Sea Machines Robotics, Inc, an industry leader in pioneering maritime autonomy and perception systems, has installed its new AI-ris computer vision product onboard a United States Coast Guard (USCG) 270’ Famous-class Medium Endurance Cutter ahead of the vessel’s upcoming deployment. AI-ris uses artificial intelligence to identify and track visual targets of interest. This installation was made possible under an ongoing Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between Sea Machines Robotics and the USCG Research and Development Center in an effort to evaluate how computer vision systems can be utilized for autonomous navigation, collision avoidance, and target detection. The deployment of AI-ris provides the USCG a new tool for maritime domain awareness and allows Sea Machines to refine its computer vision technology with feedback from the USCG across diverse environmental conditions and operational scenarios.

The collaboration between Sea Machines and the U.S. Coast Guard began in 2020 following the USCG Research and Development Center selecting the Sea Machines’ SM300 remote command and autonomy product for their 29ft research vessel. OXE Marine sign OEM agreement with Nimbus Group

OXE Marine AB (publ) has signed an agreement with Nimbus Group for the supply of engines. The agreement means that OXE Marine’s industry-leading diesel-powered outboards are now an available option for Nimbus Group’s customers to power their boats.

Until now, Nimbus Group’s customers have only been able to choose diesel inboards, but with the new agreement with OXE Marine, their offer is now broadened even further.

“Nimbus Group is one of the Nordics’ leading boat manufacturers and the fact that they have included our engines in their range is a great acknowledgement both for our technology and our products,” says Anders Berg, CEO of OXE Marine.

OXE Marine’s outboards have significantly lower fuel consumption than gasolinepowered outboards of equivalent horsepower, as a result of the diesel powerhead based on automotive technology. When OXE Marine

recently conducted sea trials of a double OXE300 installation on a Nimbus T11, the results showed that the gasoline alternative consumed 50% more fuel. It was also noted that the double OXE300 installation performed with a higher top and cruising speed. When the same installation was run on HVO100, a type of biodiesel, a 92% reduction of net CO2 emissions was seen, relative to the gasoline alternative.

”By choosing a diesel-powered outboard from OXE Marine, the customers can benefit from seeing significant reductions in both operating costs and CO2 emissions. OXE Marine’s technology can play an important part in the transition towards a more sustainable marine environment, which unlike other alternatives, is widely available for use already today,” says Anders Berg.

West Central Florida with Captain Ray Markham

Some changes may be on tap for the weekend regarding weather and some red tide issues. A mid-week cold front could blow some of the algal bloom more northward, stir up water clarity, and cool the water temperatures. Anglers may see red tide bloom enter Tampa Bay and offshore anglers may continue seeing a bloom well offshore from Manatee to midPinellas. Monitor the red tide sampling reports on the FWC website and keep an eye on the bait in your live wells.

OFFSHORE/ NEARSHORE

If you’re catching bait inshore to take offshore, you might pay close attention to make sure you aren’t running through patches of red tide and having the bait turn belly up. Take some frozen bait along with some live shrimp that can stay alive with a recirculating live well.

The early portion of the week saw a terrific catch of a variety of fish coming in on the Hubbard’s Marina 44-hour trip at John’s Pass. Gag, red, and scamp grouper were all caught. Loads of snappers of various types were caught. A monster African pompano was landed along with a few others. While this deep-water fishery produced some excellent catches, the nearshore waters have been heating up as well. Anglers up and down the coast have been seeing some great action with hogfish anywhere from 30-feet out to 70-feet for keeper sized fish, and some even larger hogs beyond that range.

This week also saw some surprisingly good catches of kingfish coming in from Pinellas waters from about Clearwater to Egmont Key. It’s a little

late this year for them to be here, but again we continue to have some warmer than usual days and nights. A couple of good cold snaps will likely send these fish south but if they encounter red tide, they could move farther west to clean water. Recently we’ve had some reports of commercial anglers from the east coast of Florida on this side working schools of kingfish hard.

INSHORE

Action has been spotty up and down the coast, and particularly from Tampa Bay south mainly due to the presence of red tide in some areas. Some areas are seeing a big influx of smaller spotted seatrout in good numbers. In other areas some large speckled trout are being caught. We’re talking upper 20-inch range. Top baits for speckled trout have been live shrimp for natural baits, either fished under popping corks or freelined. But for artificial bait users, the DOA Shrimp and 17MR16 Mirrolure MirrOdine have been catching good numbers of fish inside bays. In the ICW north of Dunedin, anglers have been tossing the CAL 5.5 glow jerk bait rigged on a 4/0 Owner live bait hook or a 1/8th ounce jig head with excellent success. Boat docks along the ICW are holding some trout, a few flounder, and some redfish.

Snook are moving up rivers, creeks, and into deep residential canals. A cold front that is expected to blow through the region this week should drop water temperatures making the need for these fish to move even more quickly than they have been. Sure hope Santa brought you that new rod and reel you asked for, because it’s time to put it to use!

We anticipate sailfish season will continue to be quite good on the reef, especially with the bumper crop of ballyhoo available for them to feed on. Up and down the reef, chasing sailfish that are spraying ballyhoo is common practice during January for guys in the know.

As saifishing is sight-fishing at its finest, a boat with a tower of some sort offers the best vantage for spotting fish. No tower? Try heading off the reef edge to the 100- to 150-foot depths and putting out a spread of four to six live ballyhoo while drifting a color change, current break or weed line. The live ballyhoo should attract the sailfish and lure them to your boat. No sailfish has ever passed up a live ballyhoo in the danger zone.

Among the sails, you may also encounter large blackfin tuna in the 15- to 20-pound class.

On occasion, dolphin, wahoo and king mackerel are roaming the same areas.

On the Atlantic wrecks, expect mutton snappers and amberjacks. Live ballyhoo is your prime bait, but pilchards or pinfish will also work.

On the main reef, the yellowtail snapper action can be hit or miss this time of year, depending on the weather patterns. The more frequent the cold fronts occur, the less likely the yellowtails are to cooperate. Should you luck out with a four- or five-day period of stable weather, drop everything and head straight for your favorite yellowtail spot.

The SeaSquared crews tend to fish for yellowtails in the shallower reef areas in 30 to 50 feet of water.

Standard size blocks of chum are all you need, as a smaller amount of food is required to hold their attention during the winter.

Residential canals with docks are holding redfish, a few mangrove snapper, flounder, and on docks with lights, trout will gang up and feed on baitfish and shrimp in the lights at night.

Unusual catches of bonefish were reported in Cockroach Bay this week. Stranger things have happened, as bonefish were also caught in Ozello, Sand Key, and Keaton Beach up the coast.

FRESHWATER

A cool down on water temperature will likely turn on the bite for crappie in lakes in the area. Lake Tarpon in Pinellas and Lake Manatee down in Bradenton both are good lakes for speckled perch. A variety of baits and lures can be used to catch them. Missouri minnows are traditionally a go-to live bait for these scrappy paper-mouthed fish. Small marabou jigs work very well. Try different colors. Most work but on any given day fish may show a preference of one color over another. Marabou jigs like the Team Crappie Slab Callers have worked well for me in the past. I found some in 1/8 oz. with a number 2 hook that worked well jigged on 2 or 4-pound test mono. With winter on the way, this will be on my to-do list… crappie fishin’!

You’ll find more consistent snapper action around the humps in Hawk Channel. Fresh shrimp and live pilchards are your baits of choice. Fish them on a jighead on the bottom for the best results.

There’s no telling what you may catch when that shrimp hits the bottom. Snappers, groupers, cobias, porgies, hogfish (which also must be released as that season is closed as well) plus Spanish, cero and king mackerel.

In the bayside waters, mangrove snappers and Spanish mackerel hang on the inshore wrecks and banks. Further out, you’ll find cobias, Goliath groupers, blacktip sharks and more, all responding to your efforts.

The lows in the upper 40s will be a memory as Friday and Saturday lows are forecast to be 71 &72 with highs of 79 & 81. Something to look forward to for sure. We have had some good catches and again as in the last report there have been difficult days. Some Kings, a Sail, 3 Wahoos, couple of Tunas on our two boats on the 24th. Out there this morning (26th) the 46 which had a great catch the 24th just pulled in from the mornings trip with nothing more than a couple of pulled hooks on a very few bites. Repeat anglers aboard both our boats this morning. Our 53 has three fish at this point. So tomorrow will be a good one hopefully. Full court press this afternoon will hopefully have some more fish this afternoon. Doing different presentations with live and dead baits today, several hours left till lines out.

We will continue to enjoy warm and pleasant weather here on the vast majority of these rapidly dwindling January days. With such great weather we would hope that the catching on our fishing charters in Fort Lauderdale would be a bit more steady but catches have fluctuated widely recently between some very nice fish and then a very tough day offshore coming in right behind that. What we seem to need to happen here to boost the fishing would be some cooler ( if not even cold) weather to shake things up. This is a shared opinion among other anglers and captains and not ours alone. So we as charter operators (and some private boat owners as well) are pulling for colder weather. If you could ask a fish and get them to answer it would likely be the opposite, say two thumbs up. Get some more fish moving and some wind to compress them nearer

Seasonable weather has finally returned to South Florida. Moderate temperature days have made for great fishing and clean water. Fun in the sun and drag screaming action.

Clean water has made tarpon fishing exciting as anglers can sight cast to fish along channels and docks. Live bait and DOA Terror Eyz excellent choices to entice strikes. Mangrove shorelines are holding juvenile tarpon on the high tides, live mullet or small Rapala twitch baits get the strike.

Big schools of jacks have shown up and they are hungry. Top water Rapala skitter walks have been the anglers favorite choice bait for explosive action. DOA C.A.L. 3” shad tail and live baits also get the strike. The jacks are ranging in size from 2 to 20 pounds.

Channels and deep holes are holding a

plethora of species for anglers to hook up with. Mackerel, snook, snapper, drum, blue fish and sharks get the drag screaming. The clean water has made it fun for anglers witnessing the strike from the fish. Does not get any better. As the water temperatures drop the fishing will continue to thrive as migratory species call our local waters home, for the next few months.

Back bays and canals are great areas to target tarpon using live baits and Rapala twitch baits. Deep channels holding bigger fish. The high outgoing and first of incoming tide, great times to tango with the silver

shore and along the outside reef edge. Shorten the playing field so to speak. So here’s to cold weather and more wind, sounds nuts to all but fishermen. So some nice fish but also fewer fish right now. 100% from us each and every day whatever the fish and weather provide.

Snook are being found in deep holes and along docks and sea walls. Live baits and DOA C.A.L. 3” shad tail best baits to get the strike. Fat snook and tarpon snook have been mixed together, adding for a mixed bag for anglers.

The channel’s and deep holes have been areas to target schooling jacks ranging in size from 5 to 10 pounds. The jacks are aggressive striking Rapala skitter walks, creating awesome surface strikes. Mixed in with the jacks are croaker, drum, mackerel and ladyfish.

Well that is the fishing report for the past week, hope you all enjoyed. Remember you can’t catch them from the couch, so get out there and get hooked up. Tight Lines!

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. CLEARWATER COAST GUARD AUXILIARY TEACHING BOATING SAFETY CLASSES

ONLINE - 2023 - A New Way to Learn … A New Crop of Safe Boaters. With the advent of COVID-19, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was advised to discontinue in-person classes for

the safety of the instructors and students. The good news is that the State of Florida (FWC) and the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved the Coast Guard Auxiliary to conduct online classes. These classes are not your standard webinar sessions where the students sit at their computers and are lectured at. And they’re not animated cartoon sessions where you have to keep pressing enter to get to the next topic.

Classes are $40 per student and include the books, supplemental materials and course completion certificates. The classes being offered by the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary are conducted on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. In addition, because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! The boating safety class is also a requirement for many boaters in Florida. In the Sunshine State, anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, must successfully complete a boater safety course approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in order to operate any boat powered by more than 10 horsepower, and they are required to carry their boater education card with them when out on the water along with picture ID.
