Here’s Some Help to Operate It Safely

Affordable 3-hour on-water training courses in Stuart, Florida

STUART, Fla., Dec. 21, 2022 – A recent spike in boat sales has brought many new boaters to the water, but are these new owners prepared? To help get them the critical behind-the-helm experience they need, a new partnership between At the Helm Training in Stuart and the national nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water makes it easy with a series of three-hour courses for beginner and experienced boat operators that run every Saturday January through March. Courses are three hours long and affordably priced at $199 per person.

All instruction is offered aboard 22- to 24foot single-engine powerboats that depart out of At the Helm’s location at 602 SW Anchorage Way in Stuart. Class size is limited to four students per vessel, ensuring each student gets sufficient time at the helm under the watchful eye of a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed captain certified to teach the National Safe Boating Council modular curriculum.

Courses include Introduction to Powerboating, Precision Docking & Boat Handling, Open-Water Boat Handling and Open-Water Advanced Maneuvering. The minimum age to participate is 16 years old. Early registration is encouraged, and there is a three-person minimum for courses to run.

At the Helm Training was founded by U.S. Coast Guard Master Mariner Capt. John Dial who, over a 40-year

boating career, saw that boats were getting bigger, more complex and more powerful, and an increasing number of operators didn’t have the experience or understanding to operate them safely. “Each vessel is unique, but the basic understanding of safe vessel operations and seamanship can be adapted to any boat with our courses,” says Dial.

Curry Spiced Mackerel with Oven Roasted Carrots

Ingredients 4 to 6 7-ounce mackerel fillets

cup plain yogurt

teaspoon curry powder

salt to taste

ground pepper to taste

pound carrots, peeled and sliced into sticks

yellow bell pepper, sliced

red bell pepper, sliced

cloves garlic, minced

tablespoons olive oil

tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. In a bowl, mix carrots, peppers, garlic and 1 tablespoon olive oil. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Place carrot mixture on a sheet pan and place in the oven. Cook for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown and crisp tender.

Evenly coat mackerel fillets with yogurt and season with curry powder. Lightly season with salt and pepper. Preheat a medium sized sauté pan over medium high heat. Place coated and seasoned fillets in pan with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Cook fillets until golden brown and cooked throughout. Serve fillets over oven roasted carrots.

How to Clean Your Boat Life Jackets in 5 Steps

Every boater knows that life jackets are essential boating gear. However, many boaters are hesitant to wash them because they fear compromising their quality. If this sounds familiar, don’t fret. In this post, we’ll explain how to clean boat life jackets (the right way).

How to Clean Life Jackets

Have your life jackets gotten stained, moldy, or downright dirty? Lucky for you, cleaning them is a breeze. All you have to do is follow these simple steps:

1. Prep the Scene

The first step to cleaning life jackets is preparing the scene. First, we recommend laying a tarp on the ground. Next, you should fill a bucket with two tablespoons of liquid laundry detergent and cool water.

2. Scrub the Jackets

The next step is to place the life jackets – straps and all – on top of the tarp. Scrub the jackets’ surfaces using the detergent-water mixture and a soft brush.

If the stains aren’t coming out, you can apply a single drop of detergent (NOT bleach) directly on top of them. Then, gently scrub the stains with the brush. Once you’re finished, let the jackets sit for 15 minutes before rinsing.

3. Spot-Clean Mold and Mildew

If your life jackets have mold or mildew on them, you need to move them outside. Clear off any visible spores, then wet the fabric and scrub as suggested. If the mildew/mold stains persist, add about ¼ cup of oxygen-based bleach to the cleaning solution.

4. Rinse the Jackets

As we mentioned, you should let the life jackets sit for about 15 minutes before rinsing. After that time has passed, rinse your jacket with clean water, either from a hose or bucket. Smooth the fabric to ensure you’ve gotten all the crevices, then hang them up to dry.

5. Store the Life Jackets

Once your life vests are completely dried, you’ll need to check for any puckering or shrinkage. If they’re clear, stow your jackets in a cool, dry, and dark place. Typically, we’d recommend storing them in a small space on your boat or inside a plastic bin in your garage.

Tips for Cleaning Life Jackets

Want to ensure your life jacket cleaning endeavors are smooth as can be? Here are some tips you should follow every time you clean your jackets:

• Always air dry: Never use a heated device or machine to dry your life jackets! Instead, dry them in a well-ventilated space out of immediate sunlight.

• Use a rotating fan: If drying your jackets indoors, use a rotating fan to speed up the process and prevent mildew.

• Rinse after use: To keep your jackets in tip-top shape, we recommend rinsing them after each use. This is especially important if your jackets are being used in saltwater.

• Clean right away: If your jackets get severely stained during use (think: food, drinks, mud, sunscreen, etc.), you should clean them as soon as you get home. Scrub with soap (see above) immediately to avoid those stains from developing further and corroding the jackets.

What Not to Do When Cleaning Life Jackets

Because you don’t want to risk damaging them, cleaning your life jackets can be tricky. Here are some things to keep in mind:

• Don’t machine-wash or dry-clean your lifejackets. The agitation and heat will break down the foam, which renders the jacket useless.

• Don’t dry your life jacket with a heat source (like a clothes dryer). Always hang the jacket to dry.

• Veer away from strong or heavily bleach-based detergents. Chlorine bleach can break down the foam and the jacket itself.

• Avoid industrial cleaning agents like gasoline, paint thinner, or acetone. These will dissolve the jacket’s interior foam and weaken its exterior fabric.

• Don’t store heavy objects on top of life jackets, as this can crush the floatation material and lessen their performance.

When Should You Clean Your Life Jackets?

We always recommend cleaning your jackets immediately after dirtying them (food or sunscreen stains, for example). However, at the very least, you should be cleaning them monthly. We also recommend cleaning your life jackets at the beginning and end of each boating season –as you put them into/take them out of storage.

Mold, mildew, and other contaminants can break down the jackets’ materials over time. Therefore, life jackets should be regularly cleaned to maintain their quality. Not only that, but cleaning forces you to check your jackets for rips, tears, and other signs of replacement.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. Bandits of Tampa Bay (Sheepshead)

February is the perfect month for catching to me one of the hardest fish to land. I am talking about sheepshead that invade the rocky bottoms, dock, bridges and wrecks inside Tampa Bay. Sheepshead are nicknamed bait stealers or bandits for their cunning ability to steal your bait before it even hits the bottom.

The big females migrate in from the Gulf of Mexico to spawn somewhere around mid to late January depending on water temperature and hang around till late March. Sheepshead are great fighters on light tackle, especially the big females that range from 5 to 12 pounds. Feeding on mostly shrimp, fiddlers, small crabs and barnacles they are considered a great table fair, and some anglers even call them chicken of the sea.

Tackle: Tackle changes depending where you are fishing for them. Around bridges and docks, light spinning tackle, 10-pound test braided line and 20-pound test fluorocarbon leader with a #1 or #2/0 Circle hook will work just fine. Fish hanging around these areas tend to be smaller, and most are males in the 1 to 3-pound class. The big females on the other hand prefer the deeper waters of the bay, hanging around the ledges, wrecks, and rock piles in anywhere from 12 to 30-feet of water and average in size from 4 to 12-pounds. Here I prefer to use medium

tackle, a 7-foot rod medium action with a larger spinning reel with 15-pound test braided line and 25-pound test fluorocarbon leader tie with a loop knot to a #2/0 circle hook. I use a Texas rig where the sinker slides on the leader just ahead of the hook. I also use a small glow soft bead because this keeps the sinker from hitting the knot and the glow beads seem to draw the attention of the larger fish. If you can find small jig heads with #1/0 or 2/0 hooks, they also work great around bridges and rock piles.

Baits: Live shrimp, fiddler crabs, bloodworms and sand fleas. Fiddler crabs work best, but tides and time schedules for me to catch the little critters make them second best to live shrimp. Since sheepshead are bait stealers, regular shrimp works best, but don’t waste money on medium or large shrimp. There’s just more bait for them to steal.

How find the fish: Coast Guard charts are still the best is showing rocky bottom and ledges or wrecks. New software chips are showing the contour of the bottom with rocks and ledges which were not available a few years back. C-Map Reveal and Navionics Platinum to me are the best with C-Map Reveal being a little better.

Fishing for the sheepshead can be a fun and rewarding experience. Hooking and fighting an 8 or 10lb. sheepshead will put a big smile on your face, and if you have kids they will love the experience.

Weather - We are on the backside of a full moon coming up to our last quarter moon currently. We’re also on the backside of a cold front approaching another cold front around midweek next week. Typically, right around the full moon we have these big flowing tides and strong current flows. These conditions should persist through the weekend on the backside of this front cleaning up and clearing up the water quickly. This front wasn’t as strong as the past fronts so we shouldn’t see the very significant fishing effects like we do sometimes with other stronger fronts. Also, because we are coming up on another front the fish should be excited and bite well toward the end of the weekend and into the early part of the work week. Looking at the weather and all variables it seems like Monday should be the best day to go out fishing. However, the weekend overall and even through the day Tuesday shouldn’t be a bad opportunity on the water either.

Inshore - The sheepshead remain the dominant inshore report species currently. This is typical through this time of year when cold fronts dominate the weather patterns. When the cold fronts roll through the weather gets a little temperamental and we see rougher seas, higher winds, and the water gets stirred up and cools off, which the sheepshead seem to like. We find the sheepshead around docks, piers, bridges, jetties and anywhere that’s going to allow the barnacles and clams to grow. Sheepshead love those smaller pieces of shrimp, cut oysters, cut

clams and even fiddler crabs. We see the sheepshead mostly biting on minimal weight and lighter tackle like 15 to 20 pound fluorocarbon and minimal weight like split shots. Sheepshead have been biting well but they’ve been somewhat spread out however, they are finally starting to really get concentrated and can be found in much higher numbers in smaller areas. They are finally starting to act like they’re getting ready to spawn.

We’re also seeing some pretty good action on trout right now especially in shallower grass flat areas. We typically find the trout around potholes, cuts and little edges of the flats, and anything like a pothole or a grass flat is considered structure and that’s what the trout are really staged up in this time of year. Look for areas strategically that have been blocked from the wind. Overnight wind temperatures are more cool and those wind protected shorelines in the early morning to midday area are more warm than other areas that got direct wind all night long while it was cooler. Also, areas that have direct sunlight through the morning are going to warm up a lot quicker than other areas. This time of year, you have to think like a frozen fish and think of areas that might be a degree or two warmer, that will often hold more actively feeding fish. Trout love slow moving soft plastics live shrimp and white bait this time of year. However, whitebait gets harder and harder to find as it gets deeper and deeper with cooling water so typically live shrimp is a good option or soft plastic lures.

Redfish action has been going well around the area too. We are seeing red fish around residential dock lines, residential canals, and mangrove shorelines and other shorelines. The very large more of the over slot red fish typically this time of year are found trailing the schools of mullet that flush behind these big cold fronts and they typically are keyed into big chunks of cut thread-fin, mullet, ladyfish or pin fish soaking on the bottom.

**REMEMBER, please help spread the word and knowledge on what to do if you hook or entangle a bird. NEVER CUT THE LINE, stay calm and reel in the bird and get all your line back and dehook them and release. Never leave any line in the water, if you accidentally hook a dock make sure to break the line off at the hook never cut your line. Seabirds in the area are more and more often showing up with line hanging off them and we are in danger of losing access to fishing areas due to this. While anytime a bird is in danger or having issues is concerning too, but a wave of support of closing areas to fishing due to negative bird interactions is extremely concerning to an already dwindling number of areas you can fish around Tampa Bay from a shoreline, dock, bridge or pier! 2022 wasn’t bad but it had its fill of difficulties. Supply chain issues still exist, highest gas prices we have ever seen, and the cost of goods and services is crazy. Everything from marina rates, insurance (tripled in 1 year), supplies, etc. have gone through the roof. But you know what, we survived and have gone through difficulties before. Not only did we survive but we are as strong as ever. Fishing in 2022 was decent and some fisheries were better than ever. Wahoo fishing in Bimini has been strong, swordfishing has been better than the past few years and the tuna fishery in NW Channel has been great. Mahi fishing this summer was not great and sailfishing last year was slower than most years. But that didn’t stop us. Both Billy and I worked hard, and I was awarded Top Release Captain for Atlantic Sailfish by The Billfish Foundation and Billy was awarded Top Mate for Atlantic Sailfish. We have won this award in the past, but I am proud to have won it last year with all the

One thing is for sure in 2023, both Billy and I will work hard at putting our clients on fish. Sailfishing has improved quite a bit this past week. We have caught sailfish on every single trip this whole week. We have also capitalized on a very good kingfish bite and have been limiting out on decent size kings all week. Our biggest kingfish this week was 36 pounds. There have also been a few wahoos around as well as some decent mahis. All in all, the fishing has been very good.

We also did a swordfish trip yesterday and we fortunate to land one at the very end of the day. We had a bite on the buoy rod early in the day and then the action stopped. It was past quitting time, but I decided to stay a bit longer and try to get another bite. Luckily, we stayed because not soon after the decision to stay, I looked back, and the buoy was on its side indication a swordfish ate the bait and was

The weather will deal the fishing cards your play during February. Cold fronts or unseasonably warm temperatures dictate which fishery will present the best action. Sailfish like the cold fronts. On the other hand, warmer temperatures are conducive to good fishing for king mackerel, dolphin and all the reef species.

We’ve had a steady run of sailfish off the reef edge, and there are good numbers of blackfin tuna mixed in where we’re finding the sails. January gave us some excellent wahoo fishing, which should spill into February with the presence of larger fish in the 30- to 50-pound category that tend to show up in the winter.

Most of this action has been on live bait, primarily pilchards and cigar minnows. The wahoo respond to goggle eyes or small bluerunners fished down 50 to 80 feet while you’re live-baiting for sails and tunas on top.

Around the wrecks and artificial reefs, there’s been lots of king mackerel action, with fish averaging 10 to 20 pounds and some approaching 40. On or near the same wrecks, you’ll find amberjacks, mutton snappers and big yellowjacks on the bottom.

Live pilchards, ballyhoo and cigar minnows are the prime baits for wreck fishing.

There’s been loads of action on yellowtail snappers on the reef, but you need to keep your eye on the weather this time of year. Don’t bother yellowtailing just after a cold front. Rather,

wait a couple of days for the weather to stabilize and the temps to warm up, which will spur on the yellowtail bite.

Additionally, you don’t want to overfeed the yellowtails during this timeframe as their metabolism is not as fast as it is later in the spring with the warmer water temps. So, be a tad stingy with your chum and Aquatic Nutrition products right now.

Hawk Channel is always a winter goto.

There have been lots of lane snappers as well as surprisingly goodsize yellowtails in the 3- to 15-inch range. Muttons are there too and, although the majority are just shy of keeper size, there are enough 18-plusinch fish to hold your interest. We’ve even had some beast 10-pounders make their way onto our boats.

Shrimp or small pilchards on a half-ounce jighead work best in Hawk Channel. If you begin to get bit off, put a small shot of #4 wire on and have fun with Spanish and cero mackerel. When the conditions are exactly right, you may catch kings up to 30 pounds. In the gulf and Florida Bay, you can expect good fishing

We’ve recently seen some of the best fishing in these areas in quite some time, with loads of bait, including threadfin herring and ballyhoo, prevalent on the Gulf wrecks plus more ballyhoo

swimming towards the surface. My customer did a great job staying tight to the fish and after 30 minutes or so we could see the swordfish tailing on the surface. Such a cool site to see the dorsal and tail fin cruising the top of the water as the swordfish was swimming on the top and trying to get away. After a few more minutes we were able to get her to the boat and that was going to be our last fish for 2022. Not a bad way to end a great year.

With all that said, 2023 is amongst us and now is the time to make your reservations for the year. January is over half booked already. Book your winter/spring sailfish trips now as well as any wahoo trips you want to make to the islands. Wahoo fishing is generally good till end of February in Bimini. Swordfishing is good yearround but the next two months are my best months for daytime swords. Remember you can’t catch them on the couch. Let’s go catch some fish in 2023!

around the banks and grassy areas of Florida Bay. These bait fish attract predators of all kinds, but the two most important to us are king mackerel and cobia.

The kings back here are typically quite large, starting at about 20 pounds and with 50- and 60-pounders common. Large baits are required to gain their attention. Everything from large threadfin herring and pilchards to bluerunnersand blue fish in the twopound class make excellent baits for large kings. Put one of these baits on a kite and get ready for some highflying king mackerel action. Bigger baits require a two-hook rig, which we custom-make according to the size of the bait fish.

You’ll also find Goliath grouper of all sizes in the same areas as well as mangrove and lane snappers. For the snappers, use small live baits, such as pilchards, small pinfish or fresh shrimp as well as chunks of ballyhoo or pinfish. Fish the bait on or near the bottom with a knocker rig or 3/8- to half-ounce jighead.

Round out your Florida Bay fishing with Spanish mackerel for the smoker. Small bucktails or jig heads tipped with fresh shrimp work best.
