Fighting Gator Florida Shrimp Dip

Ingredients

• 1/2 pound Florida gulf shrimp, peeled, deveined and cooked

• 1 cup Florida orange bell peppers, diced small

• 1/2 cup Florida celery, chopped fine

• 1/2 cup mayonnaise

• 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened

• 1/2 cup scallions, sliced fine

• 1 lemon, juiced

• 1 tablespoon Florida made seafood seasoning blend

• Florida hot sauce, to taste

• 1 tablespoon fresh herbs (thyme, oregano, parsley), chopped fine

• Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Preparation:

Chop the cooked and peeled shrimp into small pieces and place them in a medium–sized mixing bowl. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir to combine.

Taste and adjust seasoning with hot sauce, salt and fresh ground pepper. Keep shrimp dip chilled until serving.

Serve with assorted fresh cut Florida vegetables and tortilla chips for dipping.

Elco and Rock Proof Boats Partner on New Center Console

Elco, pioneer in electric vessel propulsion for 130 years, and Rock Proof Boats, known for aluminum fishing boats built to take on tough waters, have partnered to produce factory-rigged all-electric outboard models. The first in Rock Proof’s ePro Series, the 1760R center console, easily tops 25 mph with two anglers aboard.

Having ramped-up production of the 1760R prior to its debut, Rock Proof Boats has fully-loaded packages powered by the Elco EP-50RL electric outboard in stock and ready for delivery. “You can’t go anywhere right now and buy a boat and electric motor on a trailer, hook it up and go out tomorrow and fish all day,” said Brent Kauffman, Rock Proof Boats owner and founder. “With our new 1760R and Elco, we’ve made that happen.” The standard outboard is the EP-50RL, but other Elco outboards are available as well as a tillersteered configuration.

Rigged to maximize speed in electric-lake fishing tournaments, the 17’ L x 5’ W 1760R’s Elco electric outboard is powered by 23kWh lithium iron phosphate batteries. The combination allows the boat to travel over 15 miles at full throttle; range is around 50 miles at 5 mph and

nearly 100 miles at 4 mph.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other lifesaving lessons. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Fishing Knowledge: A Key to a Successful Day

As a captain, I am often asked the question, “how do you know where fish are day after day?” First, we are not magicians; we just apply some common sense and fishing knowledge. This doesn’t mean we can’t have a bad day, but our chances of catching fish are better than the average angler.

The two things we stress in our fishing school is learning the “When – Where” of catching fish. I will try to explain each one as it relates to Tampa Bay.

To know When, we must understand solunar tables, moon phases and currents.

Solunar tables are what I call nature’s clock. During a 24-hour period, we have 2 major and 2 minor feeding periods. This doesn’t mean that fish feed only during these times, but the chances of catching more fish exist.

Major periods are the best time to fish. These periods begin at the times the moon is above or below where you are fishing and lasts approximately two hours.

Minor periods are good but do not last as long. These periods begin when the moon is rising or setting.

Tides are the result of centrifugal forces caused by the gravitational attractions between the Moon, Sun, and Earth, in combination with the Earth spinning on its axis and the Moon circling the Earth in the opposite direction of the Earth’s spin. The moon rotates on its axis in exactly the length of time that it circles around the earth. The moon takes approximately 2.3 day to circle the earth.

A tide is the vertical motion or rise and fall of water. Tide tables give the daily predictions of the times and heights of high and low waters.

There are many explanations and descriptions of tidal movements, as well as reasons and suppositions as to why tides occur. Much of the terminology

refers to the same three tidal phenomena of spring tide, neap tide, and vanishing tide.

Spring tide, Neap tide, Vanishing tides.

Spring tide, the best fishing tide, is an extra high tide occurring semi-monthly at the time of the Full Moon and New Moon. It brings an extra high-high-water and lower low water. The Sun, Moon, and the Earth are in a straight line over a given point on Earth. Waters 200 miles away will experience a different tidal occurrence because the moon will not be directly over that geographical position.

Neap tide, the least desirable time to fish, is a smaller tide, occurring monthly at the same time of the Moon’s first quarter and last quarter. There is not much difference between high and low water. The celestial bodies are not in phase with each other, creating less gravitational pull on the water even though the centrifugal force from the spinning Earth remains the same.

Vanishing tides, are when the highs and lows are indistinguishable in a mixed tide.

Terms to remember.

When the tides are in full swing, the Flood Current will flow from the sea into harbors, rivers, and bay waters. (Rising tide)

When the tides are lowering, the Ebb Current from the bay, rivers, and harbors will flow in down-stream direction toward and out to the sea. (Fallen tide)

Currents are horizontal movements of water. The average current flow of a tide in a confined area is approximately 61/4 hours and then it stops, reverses direction and flows for approximately the same length of Slack water is the condition where there is no current in the water. The water is in a stationary condition just before and after a tidal change, such as an Ebb or Flood

Where, we can break it down into Winter and Summer.

Winter, look for rocks that are close to the surface during low tides and seawalls. They act as a heater radiating the sun’s heat into the water. Ever wondered why fish swim along the outer edges of a seawall or circle rock piles? Creeks and rivers generate heat from decaying matter, and the muddy bottom also tends to retain heat longer. Docks not only generate heat but also create a haven for many species of fish. The bigger the boat dock, the better the spot to fish, as larger boats tend to leave deeper holes from prop wash in the water. Power plants are another good source of heat, especially in extreme low temperatures.

Always fish the west side of the bay in the morning, as the sun’s rays will heat this area first. Fish the east side in the afternoon. Winter provides us the best view of the areas we can fish due to extreme low tides, which expose cuts along the mangroves, oyster beds and potholes that are hidden during the summer months.

Summer, look for points of ambush or cuts in the mangroves where water drains with the outgoing tide. Structures are great for holding fish. I have one spot where someone threw an old truck tire; you can count on snook and redfish to be around it during high tide. Redfish tend to hang-out around schooling mullet, as they tend to stir up the bottom, bringing up small crabs and shrimp, making a feast for following redfish. Artificial reefs are also great this time of year for mackerel, snook and grouper.

NEARSHORE REPORT

Right now, near shore we’re seeing a really good bite of hogfish! The hogfish action is going well and should continue to go well until that water starts to warm up. We’re not very far from the water warming up so get out and get your opportunity for good biting concentrated hogfish prior to this spring setting settling into our area. Right now, we’re seeing those hogfish on our five-hour half days and 10 hour all days pretty heavily along with some of the private fishing charters as well. The hogfish love light tackle especially smaller hooks and live shrimp. Typically, we’re using around three to four out hooks and live shrimp for the hogfish action. They normally will bite the naked ball jigs or other ball jigs or the banana jigs plus, we get them on the knocker rigs too. The best place to look for the hogfish is right around 30 to 70 foot of water typically. We find them on smaller hard structure like small ledges and rock piles. We also find hogfish over large areas of flat hard bottom especially areas with sea fans and small coral heads that hogfish loved to camouflage with. You can even find hogfish commonly on that shell bottom adjacent to areas of hard bottom or bigger ledges. It’s a lot easier to target hogfish and smaller structures In these areas because there’s less more aggressive fish around. Around larger structures and larger reef complexes there’s often too many other more aggressive fish around to really target hogfish with hook and line with any level of

efficiency or effectiveness. The reason is hogfish are typically very leader shy and slow to bite very unaggressive fish for the most part. Typically, you have to catch a bunch of the other species around that are more aggressive and kind of get them out of the way before you can start catching the hogfish with hook and line. Fishing with us on a party boat can sometimes make it a little easier because there’s other people on board helping you do that work when you’re out fishing by yourself or in a buddy’s boat makes it a little bit more challenging because you got a lot of fish to catch before you can get those hogfish chewing.

Also, we’re seeing a lot of good lane snapper action in this area that we’re targeting and catching the hogfish we’re seeing big numbers of pretty large average size lane snapper. The lane snapper have increased in average size dramatically plus expanded their spatial range dramatically too that simply means we find them in a more broad area than we ever have before.

Before when I was growing up we would catch lane snapper occasionally anywhere from about 30 to about 90 foot of water nowadays you catch lane snapper regularly anywhere from the beach all the way out to 160 to 180 foot of water it’s incredible how often and how broadly we see them across a large geographic region. Lane

snapper are a really good eating fish they have nice white meat and they’ll bite just about anything we put down which makes them a fun target for any experience level angler. Lane snapper are typically like mangrove snapper and they’re going to be pretty hard bottom and structure oriented.

Speaking of mangrove snapper, we’re seeing a decent mangrove snapper bite near shore especially on our ten hour all days in private fishing charters. Typically, we’re catching the mangrove snapper using the live shrimp or cut thread fins. However you can catch mangrove snapper using live shrimp as well.

Red grouper action is going pretty good near shore too we’re seeing a lot of those juvenile red grouper while targeting the hogfish lane snapper and mangroves and shallower near shore waters. In order to get cheaper red grouper and better concentrations we’re having to fish in the much deeper offshore waters as deep as you can go near shore around 100 foot to a shallows around 70 foot is a good depth range to have a better chance at finding a keeper red grouper near shore. Once we get deeper the red grouper bite is much better and we’re much more often seen keeper size right grouper out in this depth range.

As the days grow longer and the ocean begins its gradual warming phase, 68 to 72-degree range, the spring fishing bonanza on the Indian Lagoon Coast of Florida kicks in. Thus far we’ve experienced a warmer than normal winter and as of this correspondence the water temperature at the Canaveral Nearshore Buoy Station 41113 is 72 degrees. As usual, weather will serve as the determining factor in establishing the magnitude and progression of the bite and the predator species we love to catch.

Increasing water temperature will facilitate the progression of bait pods (Atlantic menhaden or pogies) from the deeper water into the near-shore waters bringing the predator species with them. As always, sea and weather conditions will determine the number of fishable days we’ll experience in March. This is especially true for those of us who target ocean species in shallow water boats. We have already experienced some good cobia days and an excellent tripletail season which should only get better and migrating fish move into our area from the south.

Other near-shore options in March consist of tripletail hanging on floating structure and weeds and large redfish, jacks and sharks shadowing bait pods along the beaches and in the inlets around midmonth. When site fishing for cobia and tripletail, consider fishing in the latter part of

What an eat!

I was looking forward to fishing with long time client Maria and throwing a fly with her. We started off focusing on bonefish and 5 minutes into the trip she hooked and landed a tiny 10” bonefish, so cute and a great sign of the health of our bonefishery. OK, cool start but let’s get an upgrade. Ha, we had to work for that upgrade! Finally the tide turned and under perfect conditions I set up on a spot I like but hadn’t fished in a while. I had a good feeling about this spot and it lived up to its history. School after school of bonefish started to move through and Maria kept getting solid shots. After too many shots and casts that should’ve rewarded her, it finally happened.

A school cam in perfectly at her 11 o’clock. I point them out and tell her to cast at 11 o’clock. She makes a good cast but it was off by a few feet and by this time the school pushes towards her 12 o’clock and moving straight at us. I tell her to pick up the fly and just roll cast at her 12. She did just that and dropped

the day when the sun is overhead as the water is warmer and visibility is better. Also, keep a sharp eye out for large manta rays shadowed by cobia and always keep a chartreuse colored buck tail in the ready position to cast at any brown clowns wondering into casting range. Along the beaches and around the inlets look for snook in close to structure and a mixture of pompano, whiting, sheepshead, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, redfish and black drum in close to shore.

As our water warms up and the silver mullet returns to the inshore lagoon flats, look for redfish schools to continue to form up in the skinny water. For the slot redfish, 18 to 27 inches, focus on areas of flipping and jumping baitfish (mullet) in water depths of 12 to 18 inches. For the larger redfish, concentrate your efforts along deeper edges of the flats and sandbars in 2 to 3 feet of water. Also, sea trout will continue to hold in the skinny water potholes, and the topwater sea trout bite will improve as the warmer water draws finger mullet back onto the central IRL flats. Additionally, schools of black drum will continue to inhabit the shallow water flats of the Mosquito Lagoon, North IRL with the larger black drum holding in the deeper channels and around bridge structures.

Oh, and the big bone starts to smoke the fly reel and got deep into the backing twice causing me to have to pole after it to recover some line. After an awesome fight Maria released her biggest bonefish to date, a solid 10-11 pounder. Wow! The rest of the trip was pretty and slow but the fish of the day was taken care of and anything after would have been icing.

I had Paul today and he wanted to hunt for bonefish. He typically fishes in the keys but wanted to check out Biscayne Bay. We started off fishing the west side of the bay but it was pretty slow. Finally he hooked up and landed the first bonefish of the day. Once the tide was right we headed to the oceanside flats and that proved to be the right move as the only three flats we fished held fish. On the first flat I saw three bonefish cruising and told him where to cast. Paul didn’t see them but made a perfect cast and a few moments later he was on releasing his second bonefish of the day a few long runs later. The second flat had some bones tailing in a bit deeper water and he got a bite but missed it. The last flat had some big fish

Lake Harney and the SR 50 Bridge, as this years run has been slow to say the least. March is also the month to start targeting schooling largemouth and sunshine bass in the deeper bends of the river at first light feeding on schools of baitfish (threadfin shad). The indicator I use to locate these schooling bass is to look for large numbers of white pelicans, herons, and egrets working the banks. Once you’ve located the schooling fish, try throwing a 6” DOA Shad Tail on top or a rattle-trap or other small subsurface swim bait into the mix. Last year the bass fishing did not materialize in areas south of Lake Jessup, so I’m hoping for a better season this year. Water levels this spring on the St Johns River are currently dropping out, but a good spring rain event could easily turn that around.

Spring is one of the best times to fish the Indian River Lagoon coast of Florida. So, if you are planning to visit the area, make sure you book your hotel and fishing guide early. Also, when the bite is on, the ramps fill up quickly, so arrive early, be polite and considerate with other anglers, because we are all on the water for the same reasons, to have fun and catch fish.

Back on Track!

Fishing was on fire until the big cold front we had on 12/24 and ever since it’s been relatively slow. Oh but today! Today was different, with seemingly identical conditions to yesterday and the day before it finally popped and the fish were everywhere! Ira and his son in law David booked me for bonefishing and I have to tell you, I was holding my breath, especially after there was no activity for the first hour. Ira let me know his freshwater guide a few miles north of us told him just the day before they were struggling to catch fish as well. Hmmm. Well, after a while Ira’s rod doubles over and he is on to the first bonefish of the day, a solid 8lb fish. Later David landed his fish at about 9 lbs and then three more come to the boat for a total of 6 fish hooked and 5 landed. Wow, that felt great. They’re back!!!!

Snook action is going well in the back bay area. Look for them around the mouths of creeks, rivers, and bayous. Mike Connealy and his brother, Ted, fished a catch-and-release trip in southern Estero Bay, using shrimp, and released twentyfive sheepshead, including six would-bekeepers to 14 inches.
