Preparation

Crack claws and remove shell and movable pincer, leaving the meat attached to the remaining pincer. Place in a single layer in a shallow dish. To make salsa marinade, combine mango, cilantro, peppers, lime juice and sugar in a mixing bowl. Taste for seasoning, adding more lime juice and/or brown sugar as needed. Spoon the salsa mixture over the meaty part of crab claws. Cover and marinate in refrigerator at least 2 hours. Serve claws on a bed of salad greens with mango salsa as an appetizer.

Highfield Boats Debuts Largest RIB To Date

The All New Sport 900

Highfield Boats, the world’s leading aluminium RIB supplier, has just pushed the technology and luxury of its RIB range to its furthest limits yet, with the launch of the allnew Sport 900.

World’s First Electric Boat Motors Still Trailblazing At 130

Since its first pleasure launches peacefully plied the man-made lagoons of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, Elco Motor Yachts has pioneered clean electric marine propulsion. This year, the company celebrates the results of 130 years of successful trailblazing. Appropriate to the occasion, the industry leader kicked off its anniversary festivities at the Chicago Boat Show. At the dawn of electrification, steam still powered most boats, so riding aboard a battery-driven 36’ boat at the World’s Fair was a novel experience. Built by the Electric Launch Company, as Elco was known then, the vessels made 66,000 three-mile trips and carried more than a million passengers. Notables such as Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and John Jacob Astor quickly became customers. To this day, the company still builds luxury launches reminiscent of the golden age of yachting.

Elco has never been shy about adopting the newest ideas and technologies. The company was the first boatbuilder to adopt methods of standardized mass production. It even introduced the world’s first boat showroom, Port Elco in Midtown Manhattan, and the offer of direct

financing and post-purchase continuous care.

Beginning at the turn of the last century, when Exide Battery founder Isaac Rice acquired both Elco and Holland Submarine, the newly formed Electric Boat Company advanced batterypowered propulsion beneath the waves to develop the US Navy’s submarine fleet. While the company continued to advance recreational craft, its production line built 550 Elco Motor Torpedo Boats for the United Kingdom during World War I and another 326 US Patrol Torpedo Boats in World War II. This included then Lt. John F. Kennedy’s PT-109 as well as his lesser-known next command, PT-59.

At the start of the Cold War, Elco was a small branch within General Dynamics Corporation. A corporate reorganization shifted focus to naval submarines and a newly acquired aircraft division, causing Elco’s pleasure boat efforts to linger.

Everything changed in 1987 when a new company took on Elco’s banner and leveraged then-new solid-state motor controller technology. The move reintroduced battery-powered electric propulsion aboard recreational boats, resulting

in a renaissance of Elco’s iconic classic launches. In 2009, the company expanded into outboard motors and focused on powering the emerging electric-boatpropulsion market.

Today, Elco offers a full range of safe and reliable electric inboard and outboard motor systems with power up to 200 hp. Compact and virtually maintenance-free, recreational boaters and commercial operators alike appreciate the lack of warm-up time, instant throttle response, impressive torque and a quiet, exhaust-free ride.

There are countless varieties of aluminum fishing boats out there, and many of them make excellent freshwater fishing boats. The simplest and least expensive in the mix are jon boats, which are easy to buy, maintain, and

transport. Many, however, aren’t ideal for rough sea conditions.

Modified V-bottom and deep-V-bottom aluminum fishing boats are also on the market, and these certainly do better in choppy waters. So whatever type of freshwater fishing you’re into, there’s almost certainly an aluminum boat built for that purpose.

Bass Boats

Bass boats are about as specialized as freshwater fishing boats get. They’re designed to help you pursue largemouth bass, period, and provide the fast performance and integrated equipment (like large release wells, multiple rod boxes, and advanced electronics), that make them suitable for tournament-style bass fishing.

Naturally, that means they aren’t as adaptable as many other boats—you won’t want to try trolling with downriggers for walleye in open water, for example, from a bass boat. But when it comes to targeting those largemouths, no tool is as finely honed.

Most people think of bay boats and flats boats as saltwater fishing platforms and most boats falling into this category are indeed used in saltwater. However, we’ve included them here because they still work well for angling in large, open bodies of freshwater. They also usually offer the stellar performance of a bass boat.

So for many anglers who might trailer to the coast one weekend and fish in a large reservoir

5. Center Consoles

Like bay and flats boats, center consoles are also generally considered saltwater fishing machines. But once again, overall flexibility and open-water capabilities mean they have a place in the freshwater fishing boat conversation. In fact, when fishing vast bodies of water like the Great Lakes, many anglers favor those oceancapable center consoles above other options.

6. Deck Boats

A deck boat is an excellent option for family anglers who enjoy activities like entertaining and watersports. Deck boats maximize the deck space aboard by maintaining their full width, or at least most of it, to the bow. Since the boat doesn’t grow narrower and narrower as you move forward, there’s more room for seating up front, and you can invite more friends out on the water.

Plenty of deck boat models offer basic fishing features like rod holders and livewells as well as forward and aft swim platforms and watersports accessories, so you can shop for one oriented more or less towards whatever sorts of fun you and your family enjoy the most.

7. Fish-and-Ski Boats

If you crossed a bowrider with an all-purpose fishing boat, you’d likely end up with a fishand-ski. They’re available in aluminum and fiberglass models of all different shapes and sizes. Since they include an added emphasis

on watersports, many also feature large powerplants and sporty performance.

Of course, you must expect to sacrifice a bit of the fishability a more dedicated fishing boat would offer. Still, most fish-and-skis cover all the basics, including livewells, pedestal fishing seats, and bow-mounted electric trolling motors.

If you enjoy mellow days on the lake, it’ll be tough to beat fishing aboard a pontoon boat. It’s important to note that most pontoon boat models have no fishing features. Still, almost all of the builders offer fishing versions or packages that equip the boat with livewells, rod holders, and pedestal-mounted fishing seats.

Plus, they still have those comfy couches, wet bars, and large swim platforms.

While pontoons may not be the top pick of most hard-core fishermen, fishing from them certainly has advantages.

Walkarounds are another type of boat that most people associate with saltwater fishing, but they are also popular in large, open bodies of freshwater where rough sea conditions are expected.

Although you lose fishing space in the bow, you gain the protection of a cabin, and that can make all the difference in the world to anglers who like to fish in marginal weather conditions or for families with small children.

INSHORE REPORT

Snook fishing is going well as we see the water warm and more fish pushing out of the Back Bay area. Generally this time of year those snook get more active towards the grass flats, and mangrove shorelines as they push out of the Back Bay areas like creeks, river, mouths and bayous. Snook are now more fixated on some of that white bait action that we’re seeing improved drastically as water temperatures continue to rise. We’ve had a big warming trend and it looks like the cold front that was for this one weekend has now dissipated to the point where it won’t affect our area heavily. That means the warming trend will settle in and continue and likely pull even more snook out of the Back Bay as more white bait become available. Snook should be really active on this upcoming full moon. That full moon will make more moving water heavier moving currents and should make those bait fish get flushed in and out with the tide providing plenty of ambush points for those opportunistic snook to ambush passing bait. We’ve seen snook even make it back out to the passes like their summertime pattern. But most of the area the snook are just starting to come out of the Back Bay back to the grass flats and mangrove shorelines out of the residential canals and kind of setting up into that springtime pattern.

Redfish action is going well around the area too; we’re seeing a lot of those red fish pull out of the residential canals and start starting to stack up more around grass flats, mangrove shorelines, oyster bars. They’re starting to transition away from their crustacean feed. Like the snook these fish are on the move; transitioning from that cooler weather pattern to that warmer water springtime pattern. We’re seeing more redfish action on the white bait and less of the dead cut bait soaking on the bottom but still plenty of action on the shrimp especially around those dock lines still plenty of red fish hanging out.

Trout action still going well around the area too where you find one you typically find more than one and they are definitely on the move like the snook and the red fish to a little bit deeper water as the water continues to warm. During the winter months trout get up on those shallow grass flats and spend a lot of time in shallower water. But as we move into spring they go a little deeper and they tend to spend more time in deeper water. We see the trout moving around dock lights and bridge this time of year and into summer. Trout love ambushing small pin fish along with shrimp.

Pompano action is going well out on our beaches. The Johns pass jetty has provided Pompano action for quite a few anglers as of late. Pompano action is typically best in the early morning hours prior to the foot traffic or swimmer traffic picking up. Pompano also like sand fleas and live shrimp on the bottom. We’re seeing some lucky anglers catch the Pompano using the live shrimp. We also carry Frozen sand fleas that have been working well as well.

Sheepshead action is still going extremely well throughout the area we’re seeing those sheepshead biting around virtually any dock pier bridge jetty or rock. Sheepshead really like cut oysters, cut clams, sand fleas,

small pieces of shrimp and anything that’s small and close to the structure. Typically lighter tackle and minimal weight is a great way to target those sheepshead. Sheepshead should remain concentrated around docks, piers, bridges, jetties and virtually any hard structure through the next few weeks. But as water continues to warm we’ll see those sheepshead concentrations dwindle and they’ll start to spread out throughout the area.

Mackerel have started to pick up inshore we’re starting to see a lot of mackerel around local fishing piers like the skyway fishing pier, the rod and reel pier and other area fishing Piers. Mackeral will also hang out on those deeper grass flats where faster moving water is holding white bait. Mackerel like deep fast moving water in any concentrations of live bait. Fast moving flashy lures also work well to attract the mackerel into feeding.

NEARSHORE REPORT

Hogfish action is still the highlight of the near shore fishery. We should still have hogfish biting well throughout the area for the next few weeks. But as waters continue to warm and stay warm generally those hogfish will spread out and become a little bit more tricky to target with hook and line. Take advantage of the next few weeks and try to capitalize on the hogfish bite while it’s still good. If we don’t get another strong cold front that hogfish action will slow down even faster so it’s a good opportunity to get out on the water and capitalize on that near shore hogfish bite. They’re biting best around 30 to 70 foot of water.

Lane snapper action is going well. The lane snapper are a little deeper around 50 to 100 foot of water. Lane snapper are great eating fish and we generally see them in good concentrations especially on the 10 hour all day fishing towards the deeper half of the near shore waters. Lane snapper like small pieces of squid and live shrimp; they’ll even eat small pieces of threadfin as well.

Mangrove snapper have been super productive near shore we’re seeing a lot of the mangrove snapper on our 10 hour all day trips. We’re seeing mangrove snapper eating mostly those small chunks of cut threadfin with the double Snell rig. You can get mangrove snapper using live shrimp but the most productive way is using a small chunk of threadfin with a double snell rig. We’re seeing mangrove snapper up to six pounds even near shore which is a very large near shore mangrove snapper.

Red grouper action is still going well near shore, we’re seeing some of those keeper red grouper as we get to the deepest near shore waters closer to 100 foot. Red grouper will bite a hole threadfin with a tail cut. A large strip of squid and even a live pin fish. Red grouper have been a little bit picky and they definitely are a little bit difficult because you have to sort through a lot of smaller red grouper to find the keepers.

Also near shore the mackerel have picked up. We started to see mackerel while trolling on our way out and way back during five hour half day fishing trips. It’s very early but it is a good sign of things to come.

Hopefully The dirty water that we see along the coast won’t affect the mackerel near shore. But sometimes it’ll stop the bait from pouring offshore which tends to make the mackerel miss the area. Unfortunately, it’s one of those things we just have to wait and see.

OFFSHORE REPORT

Big mangrove snapper have been welcomed offshore. We’re seeing some good sized mangrove snapper and some pretty decent concentrations. We’re fishing mainly right around 100 to about 160 foot of water right now while offshore. We have that deep water closure going on through the month of March which means we can only keep red grouper when fishing inside 20 fathoms or 120 foot of water. This means generally on our 39 hour trips we’ll fish a little deeper the first night the target mangrove snapper and 120 to 160 foot of water and then the second night and a majority of the day will spend in a little shallower water hunting those keeper red grouper and more mangrove snapper. The mangrove snapper action has been going pretty decently on our 39 hour trips especially at night the first or second night. Some trips we do better in deeper water for the mangrove snapper and in some trips we’ve done better in the shallow water for mangrove snapper we haven’t quite dialed in on where the best bite is because we’ve only run a handful of 39 hour trips so far this year so it’s hard to say whether or not we will consistently fish a little deeper the first night or stay a little shallower depending on where we feel the mangrove snapper options are best.

The red grouper action has been going well. We’re seeing red grouper out there in offshore waters around 120 foot especially on those 12 hour extreme trips or 39 hour trips or long range private fishing charters. The red grouper are still biting well Despite that deep water closure we just have to work a little bit harder to play the game to make sure we’re in the right area when we can keep and hunt those fish. It’s a great time to get offshore and enjoy catching some keeper red grouper.

The yellowtail snapper action has been picking up offshore right now we’re seeing some pretty good sized yellowtail snapper. Yellowtail snapper are one of those fish we catch from time to time but lately it seems like we’re seeing more of them. The average size has been pretty large as well so it’s a welcomed addition to those long range adventures.

Blackfin tuna has been going well offshore too we’re starting to see more and more blackfin tuna while trolling or flat line fishing offshore. On a recent 39 hour trip we caught 9 keeper blackfin tuna while trolling between spots. We have even seen some really large kingfish start to show up it’s early but the kingfish don’t know that yet. We saw the biggest kingfish so far come up while fishing for mangrove snapper with a knocker rig. We have some super light load 39 hour trips and 12 hour extreme trips which offer plenty of room to try some unique styles of fishing and that has allowed us to really see some big fish.

Epic Battle

In my last report, I stated that this was the best sailfish season we have had in Miami in the past 5 years and that is the truth, and it keeps getting better. The past few weeks we have had some very consistent sailfishing. Not only is it consistent but we did have our first double digit sailfish day catching 15 sailfish in one day. The best part about it is we have been seeing sailfish every day even if the conditions are not just right. This past weekend we had flat calm water, no wind and very little current but we still caught 2 – 5 sailfish every day and one day we saw over 15 freejumpers, so we know that there are fish around. This is great news as we have had many happy customers lately. We did have one trip that will be remembered for a long time. We started off catching a couple of sailfish at the beginning of our trip. Then from the corner of my eye I see a big explosion on the left long kite bait. We were in 180 ft of water of a spot we call the Diamonds. Within minutes we had this fish screaming line of the reel and staying on top. At first, I didn’t know exactly what we had on, but after a minute or two and by the way it was fighting it could only be one thing and that would be a big yellowfin tuna. We hook 5 or 6 yellowfins a year here in Miami but by using only 30- or 40-pound leader for sailfish, these tunas have small teeth and wear through the leader quickly. And the yellowfins we get are not on the small size and are typically 100 to 150 pounds. The size, the small teeth and

the fact we fight them on 20-pound light tackle is the reason we don’t land many. I personally have caught over a dozen big yellowfins in Miami but that is in a 30-year career. It’s been about 5 years since we landed our last one and wouldn’t you know it was hooked in the exact same area. After about 5 minutes and once we cleared all the baits and bought the kites in, I was able to finally get a good look at the fish as it was running on the surface, and I guessed it to be about a 100-pound yellowfin tuna. We had a very good and very accomplished angler on the rod and if the fish was not gut hooked and risk wearing the leader out on its teeth, we stood a great chance of catching this beast. After one and a half hours we had our first dart shot on the fish. A dart is the only way you are going to be able to land them because if you were to grab the light leader you would break them off instantly. Unfortunately, we missed on the first dart shot and the fish sounded again. After 30 more grueling minutes the fish came up but every time, I would charge it to get close for a dart shot the fish would sense the boat and dive back down. After 5 or more attempts I finally decided just to creep up on it slow and at the last second charge it so Billy would have another shot at the dart. We did that and got the dart in her. Even with a dart in her back and a hook in her mouth she dove back down another 400 feet and fought us for another 20 minutes.

The month of March, and sometimes even into April, can be the windiest time of year in the Florida Keys. If you want quality fishing, go with an open mind and listen to your captain’s recommendations for what your best target species is.

Both the Atlantic and the Gulf waters have quality fisheries happening but, again, the wind will dictate which direction you can go.

In the Atlantic waters, we have plenty of pelagics, including blackfin tuna, kingfish and some big cobia. But the star attraction is the abundance of sailfish. March and April will be prime time to target sails, but take your iron stomach with you because conditions can be quite sporty.

In the Gulf and Florida Bay venues, we’ve seen some of the best fishing in ten years, with loads of Florida pompano, cobia and large kings. Goliath groupers and sharks keep the game interesting.

On the deep side of the reef in 150 to 250 feet of water, there are good numbers of blackfin tuna in the 10- to 20-pound class plus king mackerel and a more common occurrence of dolphin as well as sailfish. Live baits are key with live pilchards providing the most consistent action. Live ballyhoo, if you can find them, also work well. Cigar minnows and sardines will also put fish in the box.

Moving inshore to the wrecks, March

is typically very good for mutton snappers, kingfish and very large amberjacks.

The amberjacks are beginning their spawn this month, and it’s now that we catch some of the biggest ones of the year. Fish in the 60- to 80-pound class are not unusual, with plenty of 20- to 40-pounders to wear you out.

The best baits to attract the attention of the AJs are bluerunners, grunts and large pilchards. Jigging also produces excellent results.

For the muttons and kings, live pinfish, pilchards or ballyhoo all work, fished down near the bottom.

On the reef, the yellowtail action picks up tempo at this point in the spring. With the warming waters, the fish become more active and need to feed more, which makes it a bit easier to coerce them into taking your bait. Using plenty of chum is important. SnapperUp or Mojo Oats will bring them in right behind your boat.

All you need for successful yellowtail catching are 15-lb fluoro leaders and small hooks, such as the Owner #4 Mutu Light hooks we use.

The reef edge will have good numbers of king and cero mackerel. And, of course, plenty of grouper that must be released as the season is closed until

feet of water. We got her on board, and I estimated her at 125 pounds. Not a bad estimate as it was 124.6 pounds on our digital scale back at the dock. All I can say it was an epic battle where everything went right. The fish was gut hooked and we should have lost it, but the leader was wedged in the crease of her jaw and was not allowing it to rub across her teeth. We also had an awesome angler that had not only patience but knew exactly how much pressure to keep on the fish. This angler has caught plenty of big bluefins and yellowfins in his past, albeit none on this lighter tackle. All I can say is what a great fight, a great fish and a memory that I will never forget.

Marathon/Florida Keys

In Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, there are loads of cobia, large king mackerel, Spanish mackerel and mangrove snappers. Pinfish is the go-to bait for all but the kings, which love small bluerunners fished either under a balloon or, preferably, hanging from a kite. We use #7 wire, as these kings are quite large and can bite through smaller wire. For everything else in the bay and gulf, it’s all about pinfish on a jighead. You’ll most likely catch some Goliath grouper. Be sure to release them quickly and unharmed as they are protected.

March is a good time of year to target sharks around the flats and banks. It’s primarily blacktips, spinners, bulls and a few hammerheads to start but, as we get toward the end of the month and the waters warm up, we begin to see more lemons.

Any kind of fresh dead bait or live bait works, such as jacks, bluerunners, ladyfish and the like. Be sure to use circle hooks. We always use Owner 9/0 SSW circles for fishing for all shark species, with #7 to #8 wire and 20-lb class tackle rounding out your setup.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. FLY FISHING SCHOOL- SARASOTA - Capt. Rick Grassett will be the instructor for CB’s Saltwater Outfitters Orvis-Endorsed fly fishing school on Mar 18, 2023. CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutuallyconvenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. After successful inspection you are awarded a vessel safety check sticker which is affixed to your vessel near your state registration sticker. - The Coast Guard urges recreational boaters, paddlers, anglers, and others to remain safe on the water by taking a Safe Boating Course. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other life-saving lessons. A boating safety course will teach the basic skills to operate a vessel safely. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. To continue offering these classes safely for the students and instructors, they are being offered on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. Because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! Classes are $50 per student and include books, supplemental materials, and course completion certificates. The next classes begin in January and continue monthly. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license.
