Sea Tow® Shares Top Tips in Preparation for Boating Season

Annual Maintenance and Safety Checks Ensure Optimal Boating All Season

Southold, N.Y. – March 14, 2023 – Sea Tow Services International, Inc., the nation’s leading on-water marine assistance provider, is pleased to share tips in preparation for this spring, when many boaters put their vessels back in the water.

The annual U.S. marine industry expenditure for boats and related services was $56.7 billion in 2021, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association. The general rule of thumb is that annual maintenance for a used boat is approximately 10% of the boat’s cost; for a new boat, it’s 2% of the boat’s cost.

For maximum safety and performance, consumer boating resource Discover Boating recommends annual inspections for all boats. While there are a few items that may require professional attention, most ongoing maintenance can easily be handled by the owner.

“It is imperative to take the time on an annual basis to perform maintenance and safety checks on your boat,” said Sea Tow President Kristen Frohnhoefer. “The spring season is an optimal time for an overall maintenance check. Whether boat owners are new to the water or seasoned mariners, maintenance - on boats old AND new - is critical and ensures that everyone on board can enjoy a memorable boating experience.”

The following are Sea Tow’s top tips in preparation for the upcoming boating season:

1. Check renewals, insurance, memberships, and marina facility checks. Boaters should ensure that their state registration and boat insurance policy are current and valid. If the boat is docked at a marina, investigate to learn if any changes have been made to marina policies including storm procedures. This is also a good time to renew a Sea Tow® membership.

Shoreline Protection: How Boaters Can Protect the Shore

Boating is an enjoyable and rewarding activity that allows us to explore the beauty of our coastlines and waterways. However, as boaters, we are also responsible for protecting the environment we enjoy. Shoreline protection is an essential aspect of this responsibility, and there are several ways we can be responsible boaters and protect the shoreline.

But how does a responsible boater protect the shoreline? This blog post will discuss shoreline protection methods and offer a list of best practices for responsible boaters.

Whether you are an experienced boater or a beginner, these tips will help you protect the shoreline and preserve the environment for future generations.

9 Shoreline Protection Tips:

#1: Follow No-Wake Zones

Traveling through no-wake zones can be both beneficial and necessary to protect our shorelines. Boaters must operate their vessels at a low speed, typically noted with signs, buoys, or other markers. By following the guidelines of these areas, we ensure that damaging wakes never reach our beloved coastlines.

As a responsible boater recognizing shoreline protection methods, you should always follow no-wake zones to prevent shoreline erosion and protect the habitats of marine life. When approaching a no-wake zone, reduce your speed and operate your boat at a safe and steady pace.

#2: Anchor in Designated Areas

Suppose you anchor in a spot not designated for such activity. In that case, it can cause irreversible damage to the shoreline, particularly in places that are home to delicate marine life and foliage.

To ensure this doesn’t occur, follow these tips:

• Only drop your anchor in areas allocated explicitly for anchoring.

• Remember never to drag your anchor along the bottom or near coral reefs or seagrass beds.

#3: Properly Dispose of Trash

Protecting our shorelines starts with properly disposing of trash. As a boater, bring an extra bag for your garbage and dispose of it ashore. Never throw rubbish into the sea! It doesn’t only damage marine life but can also end up onshore, making pollution prevention essential.

#4: Use Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products

As you clean your boat, it is paramount to use eco-friendly cleaning products. Standard cleaners may contain unsavory chemicals that can damage the aquatic environment and nearby shores.

Utilize only products labeled as green to scrub down your boat for a cleaner experience with minimal impact on Mother Nature. If you don’t want to use cleaning products, rinse with clean, fresh water and a soft brush.

2. Inspect boat trailers. If the boat will be transported by a trailer, check the trailer to ensure it’s in its best condition. This includes proper tire inflation, greased wheel bearings, cleaned and sprayed light connections, and topped off brake fluid. Rinse boat trailers after every use and keep the brake fluid reservoir topped off. This is critical to preventing saltwater corrosion.

3. Inspect the boat for any damage that may have occurred during storage. This is the time to address any peeling paint, damage to the hull, etc. Also, do a deep clean of the boat’s interior. Mold and mildew can grow on boat’s interior vinyl. Whenever possible, choose an organic product or one labeled as non-toxic to marine and aquatic life. A cost-effective alternative is a mild mixture of bleach and water.

4. Check that all electronics are functioning properly. Turn on items including the radio, navigation, freshwater systems, lights, depth sounder and chart plotter. Replace or remediate any electronics that are in poor condition.

5. Once in the water, do an engine check. Start the engine and listen for any unusual noises. Make sure a strong flow of water is being pumped from the telltale. If there are any issues, stop the engine and visually inspect for blockage or damage. It’s also important to clean out the fuel filter and spark plugs and check the engine’s strainer for debris. Ensure the scuppers are clear, and take the time to check out anything that sounds loose or appears shaky. Tighten any guardrails, fishing rod holders or storage compartments.

6. Ensure safety equipment is up to date and that correct quantities are on board. This includes life jackets for each passenger, a fire extinguisher that is not expired, medical kit with sunscreen, and extra drinking water.

#5: Respect Wildlife and their Habitat

As boaters, it’s our responsibility to share the water with all sorts of wildlife, like birds, fish, and marine mammals.

For this reason, we shouldn’t disturb them while in their habitat by keeping a safe distance away from them and avoiding feeding at any cost, as that could endanger their well-being or change their natural behavior in an unhealthy manner. Never get too close to them, and always keep your noise level down.

#6: Practice Safe Fueling

To ensure that your vessel’s fueling process is eco-friendly, you should fuel up in designated areas and use a spill containment device. If an accidental fuel spill does occur, absorbent materials must be used to clean up the area immediately.

Taking this precaution will help protect the environment and preserve our waterways for generations to come.

#7: Be Mindful of Propellers

You must remain attentive to the potential issues that can arise from boat propellers. Not only could they cause severe damage to the shoreline and marine life, but having a faulty or poorly maintained prop increases those chances exponentially.

So ensure your equipment is in good working order before leaving port, and avoid shallow areas populated by sea creatures when possible.

#8: Participate in Beach Cleanups

Doing your part for the environment has never been simpler than with beach cleanups! Organizations and local governments regularly host events to help keep our shorelines pristine, and it’s easy for boaters to chip in.

Whether you’re collecting debris from land or sea, this is a wonderful way to give back while safeguarding our coastlines.

#9: Spread the Word

The most effective way to ensure shoreline protection is by educating others. Encourage your boating network to practice these methods and share the importance of preserving our coastlines.

Coconut Snapper with Spinach Endive Sauté

Ingredients

3 tablespoons olive oil, divided

4 6-ounce snapper filets

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

2 cloves garlic, crushed

1 teaspoon fresh ginger, peeled & grated

1/2 cup diced onion, divided

1 cup canned coconut milk

2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

1 teaspoon soy sauce

1/4 teaspoon hot sauce

1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped

1 head Belgian endive, thin sliced

1 10-ounce bag spinach, washed

Preparation:

Season fillets with salt and pepper. In large sauté pan, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium-high heat. Cook fillets 3 to 4 minutes per side until cooked through. Remove fish from skillet and keep warm. For coconut sauce, return pan to heat and cook garlic, ginger and 1/4 cup onion until tender. Add coconut milk, lime juice, soy sauce, hot sauce and bring to a boil. Lower heat and add cilantro; simmer for 5 minutes. In a separate, large skillet, heat the remaining oil over medium-high heat. Sauté remaining 1/4 cup onion, endive and spinach until greens are just wilted. Serve fillets with sauce over sautéed vegetables.

Sea Ray Celebrates 50 Years In Merritt Island

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. — March 13, 2023 — With more than six decades of manufacturing one of the most globally recognized brand of boats in the marine industry, Sea Ray is celebrating 50 years at its Merritt Island, Fla. facility and honoring the location’s history and achievements.

Sea Ray first made its home in Florida when it set up a design and development department in 1972. The Merritt Island facility was established the following year with production beginning early in 1973. It was the first of several plants Sea Ray would open in Florida, and it initially produced SRV 220 and SRV 240 models, the largest boats in the Sea Ray fleet at the time. BIMC is currently helmed by Patrick Breckenridge, who joined Brunswick Boat Group as the director of operations in 2022. He brings his expertise and experience of manufacturing and delivering complex products to highly discerning customers who expect the highest standards of quality that Sea Ray is known for.

A native of Brevard County, Patrick brings more than 15 years of experience from the aerospace and space industries. Most recently, he was the senior production manager at Embraer Executive Jets in the assembly of four to 12-passenger custom business jets leading to FAA and ANAC (Brazil) certification, as well as the manufacturing operations for seats in commercial and business jet aircraft. While at Embraer, he held leadership roles for North American and international, logistics, supply chain, and production planning. He also holds a Green Belt from Arizona State University and was a certified Kaizen Event planner for both the U.S. and Brazil by Embraer. He has hosted over 100 Kaizen events for operational improvements.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. BOAT AMERICA CLASSES – CLEARWATER, FLORIDA COAST GUARD AUXILIARY2023 - The Coast Guard urges recreational boaters, paddlers, anglers, and others to remain safe on the water by taking a Safe Boating Course. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other lifesaving lessons. A boating safety course will teach the basic skills to operate a vessel safely. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even nonboaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. To continue offering these classes safely for the students and instructors, they are being offered on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. Because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom –the students can be anywhere in Florida! Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. Top 3 Reasons to Fish the Nature Coast during the 2023 Spring Season

Florida’s winter season tiptoed on by this year. Gone are the memories of the extreme freeze in December as abnormally warm weather has settled in along the Nature Coast since the start of the New Year. It’s well known that Florida has incredible weather almost year round but consistent high temperatures hovering around the 80’s since February has spoiled even the most diehard snowbirds.

The geographical location at which the Nature Coast lies along Florida’s West Coast uniquely helps contribute to its great weather. The small fishing towns of Crystal River and Homosassa are located far enough north along the coast that they do not see the extreme heat spells that south Florida is famous for but they are located just far enough to the south that they tend to experience incredibly mild winter weather.

With over 300 great weather days annually the Nature Coast is the place to be for great weather and fishing.

Pristine Water Quality For Sight

Here along the Nature Coast, anglers will find that our waterways still remain pristine and full of life. The gin clear waters that have made our flats famous for over a century still produce great sight fishing opportunities for species such as Snook, Redfish, Speckled Trout and Tarpon.

The worries of Red Tide are nonexistent here due in part to the lack of development and the large volume of fresh water that pumps daily through our springs as it makes its way into the Gulf. For those of you that have never heard of Red Tide, Red Tide is a harmful algae bloom that does its damage by choking off the oxygen supply to a particular area of water thus killing off a majority of plants and fish within its range. These harmful situations are usually regionalized in areas of south Florida where growth has gotten out of control.

On a brighter note: Imagine fishing in an aquarium that was extremely well taken care of with plenty of fish, under water plants, and an abundance of other creatures such as

starfish, sponges, corals, shrimp, crabs, and seahorses. That describes our beautiful waterways in a nutshell and it’s worth the trip just to see a healthy coastline.

Variety of Species:

One fish, two fish, Redfish, Bluefish. Now add 18 other great species and that’s exactly what visiting anglers can expect as the Nature Coast is a true “Bucket List” destination. With every season ringing in different opportunities for anglers it’s extremely difficult to get bored when multiple species are readily available. How about targeting Largemouth Bass in the morning, before targeting Redfish and Snook around lunchtime, only to run out a few miles and tangle into a Cobia or Grouper to round out an afternoon? When we talk about many species we’re talking about freshwater, inshore, and offshore species all mixed into one day.

There should be good action with reds, trout and snook in skinny water in March as baitfish become more plentiful. Look for Spanish and king mackerel, cobia, tripletail and false albacore (little tunny) in the coastal gulf. Night snook fishing in the ICW should also be a good option this month.

Regulations have returned to normal for reds and snook in Sarasota, except snook remains closed to harvest in the Charlotte Harbor area. Spotted Seatrout have changed in southwest Florida to a 3 fish per person, bag limit and a 6 fish boat limit. Trout must be from 15”-19” with one allowed per vessel over 19”. In my opinion it’s important to protect larger trout, which are usually female breeders. Full regulations and details for all species can be viewed at https:// myfwc.com/ .

This should be a good month for snook fishing at night around lighted docks and bridge fenders in the ICW. DOA Shrimp, CAL jigs with shad tails and small white flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow, usually work well at night since glass minnows and shrimp are the predominate bait. Focus on shadow lines where light meets dark and fish strong tides for the best action. Although snook may also be found in rivers, creeks or canals in March, they will also start to move onto shallow flats, particularly on sunny afternoons when it’s warm. I like larger lures like CAL jigs with jerk worms, CAL 4” Shad Tails, DOA Baitbusters and the DOA PT soft plastic top water lure or wide profile flies like Clousers, Deceivers and EP flies, for snook on the flats.

Look for early season tarpon that may start to show in backcountry areas. These are usually adult resident fish that are making their way out of rivers and creeks. They may be “laid up” or

rolling on deep grass flats, on edges of shallow flats or along bars when it is calm. An accurate cast with a DOA Shrimp, a Deceiver or Tarpon Bunny fly may result in an explosive strike! Look for them in areas of Sarasota Bay, lower Tampa Bay or in Gasparilla Sound on some of the same deep grass flats where you find trout.

Reds should be more active as the water warms and baitfish become more plentiful. Higher tides, as we head into spring, will allow them to spend more time feeding in shallow water. Look for them over shallow grass, along mangrove shorelines and around oyster bars when the tide is high. You should find them in potholes and along sand bars when the tide is low. I like the shallow flats of north Sarasota Bay for reds this month. I like 1/16-ounce CAL jigs with shad tails and jerk worms to locate reds. Fly anglers should score with my Grassett Flats Minnow fly, fished on a 10’-12’ leader. When using a long leader be sure you are able turn it over, otherwise you’ll need to shorten it until you can. The butt section should be at least 50% of the total length of the leader and stiff enough to transfer energy from your fly line to the leader.

You might also find reds around docks when the tide is low. Look for deep water under docks with a good tidal flow for the best action. A 1/8-ounce CAL jig with a shad tail or grub or a weighted fly fished on a clear intermediate sink tip fly line with a 6’ leader with should work well for dock fishing.

You may find big trout in skinny water in many of the same places that you find reds. Blind cast seams where grass meets sand or focus on light colored bottom, in potholes on top of sand bars, where you may be able to sight fish them. These big fish, usually females, are important to the health of our fishery.

You should also find trout plentiful on deep grass flats along with Spanish mackerel, blues, flounder or pompano. I like to make a series of drifts, casting ahead of the drift with CAL jigs with shad tails, DOA Deadly Combos or an Ultra Hair Clouser fly tied on a long shank hook and fished on a clear intermediate sink tip fly line to locate fish. Also look for birds, bait showering out of the water or boils on the surface that will indicate fish feeding below. When mackerel and blues are around, you may need to add 6” of 40# to 60# fluorocarbon or wire to your leader. Top water plugs and fly poppers also work well when blues and mackerel are around and may help locate them by attracting them from further away. Flounder may be found on sand or mud bottom areas on both shallow and deep grass flats or around docks. Pompano may skip on the surface when you drift or run past them, giving their location away. Fish deep grass flats with a mixture of grass and sand and a strong tidal flow for the best action.

You may also find Spanish or king mackerel, false albacore (little tunny), cobia or tripletail in the coastal gulf this month. Look for diving or hovering terns to find Spanish mackerel or false albacore feeding on the surface. ¼-ounce CAL jigs with shad tails or jerk worms or top water plugs should work well for spin anglers. Fly anglers should score with small white flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow or Ultra Hair Clousers fished on an intermediate sink tip fly line.

March weather has been spectacular. Warm weather days, light winds perfect weather for fishing. Snook fishing has been fantastic targeting mangrove, shoreline and docks using DOA C.A.L. 3” shad tail, flies and live bait. Anglers have been catching all four species of snook the past week. Many of the days anglers could sight fish the snook, making for exciting takes.

The tarpon fishing is adding fun in the sun for anglers. Anglers are bowing down to the king. Live baits and DOA Terror Eyz have been the bait of choice for the silver king. Schools of tarpon are seen rolling on the surface making anglers happy as they cast in their vicinity.

Channel edges and holes have been holding a plethora of species. Jacks have been the highly prized catch, due to their drag screaming runs and relentless fight. Jigs and top water plugs have been great tactics for the jacks. Snapper, drum, mackerel are also in the mix.

Spring fling is in the air! Warm weather and plenty of sunshine has anglers flinging baits and hooking up!

Tarpon fishing has been spectacular the past week. Bowing to the king never gets old and anglers have had

great success fly fishing using live baits and DOA Terror Eyz. The tarpon are in schools near channels and mangrove shorelines, sight casting the tarpon not uncommon during outings.

Snook are on the tear, striking live baits, flies and DOA C.A.L. 3” shad tail. Structures, shorelines and channels have been teaming with snook. Snook are active all through the day as well as night. Multiple species of snook add to the excitement for anglers.

For those who like to target other species, jacks are always up for the fight. Providing extreme drag screaming runs, jacks will devour live baits and Rapala skitter walks.

Move over leprechauns, this month I’m leading anglers to the pot of gold, well silver that is. Snook and tarpon! March has offered great weather and fishing.

Green mangroves offer plenty of action for snook, ambushing waiting in the shadows, linesiders are striking Rapala twitch baits and live baits. Low light hours offer great surface strikes and night fishing offers great sight fishing, using flies and Rapala twitch baits.

Another two trips today out of Key Biscayne and I had Lenny and Bri as my morning clients. Lenny is the son of a long time client of mine but we hadn’t fished together before until today. They were both great with Lenny not fishing often and Bri having never fished before. Well, we took it easy and they caught a bunch of snappers, jack crevalles, yellow jacks and Bri landed a shark. They were thrilled, Bri said it was super fun and Lenny was awesome to fish with.

My afternoon trip was with Mike and I wanted to change it up from my morning trip. I took Mike to an area for snook and tarpon and he caught a couple of snook, had four tarpon bites, hooked, two, lost both of them and landed a huge jack crevalle. We did everything we could on those tarpon but they would not stay on the hook, so frustrating.

The two extremes March 14, 2023

I had two trips today with both being the opposite ends of the fishing spectrum. In the morning I had Blake and his father in law Craig and Blake wanted to fly fish for tarpon. I looked high and low around Key Biscayne, usually the epicenter of spring tarpon season, and they were MIA. This season is

starting off like the last few years, slow and disappointing. Anyway, I took them to a spot where there are usually some snook around and smaller tarpon. Switching gears, I had Blake cast to some snook structure while Craig tossed a bait behind the boat. On the second cast Craig hooks a smaller tarpon but it came off after the first jump. Wow! As expected, eventually Blake caught his first snook on fly and Craig caught his first snook while the tarpon moved through for a while and Blake took a bunch of shots but the tarpon passed on the fly, not a shocker.

In the afternoon I had long time client Josh and his two boys, Will and Joshua. They wanted a cool fun afternoon on the water catching anything and so we did. We caught a bunch of snappers and hooked two black tip sharks before calling it a day. It was great to see Josh and Will again and meeting Joshua for the first time.

I had two trips today and the first one was with Kev and his son Connor and they wanted to try and get a bonefish. The weather has been perfect and we had plenty of shots at schools of bonefish swimming in really shallow calm water

Those looking for slow pace fishing rock piles are holding an abundance of species, snapper, jacks, drum, barracuda and many others. Live baits, shrimp and jigs will get the rod bent.

but no takers as things didn’t work out perfectly as they should. Towards the end of the trip the wind started to crank and we fished a spot I like out of the wind and here is where Connor got his first bonefish, a nice fish that swam off before we could get a good picture of it. Nice work Connor! My afternoon trip was with Michael and Andrea and they just wanted to check out the are and catch whatever was biting. Well, I took them to a finger channel that has been red hot across the bay and it worked out. They were catching nice hard fighting yellow jacks pretty consistently and having a blast. All of a sudden the wind started to howl and the bay was covered in white caps so we decided to run back and fish close to the marina before things got worst. Here we decided to bonefish and we missed the first few bites but eventually we had a solid take and they were on! Andrea fought the bonefish first and then Michael took over when she got tired and we were able to land a nice bonefish right at the end of the trip. Way to go guys!
