Chris-Craft Adds Production Capacity with Opening of State-Of-The-Art Manufacturing Facility

The 70,000 sq. ft. building adds over 200 jobs to Sarasota Community

SARASOTA, Fla., March 28, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In a ceremonial ribbon-cutting, Chris-Craft, America’s Boatbuilder Since 1874 and wholly owned subsidiary of Winnebago Industries (NYSE: WGO), opened its doors to a new state-of-theart manufacturing facility in Sarasota, Florida today. The new building, known to the team at Chris-Craft as Building 5, increases the company’s production capacity by 50 percent and spans over 70,000 square feet, allowing for the full build of boats from start to finish.

Using the latest manufacturing equipment and technology, Chris-Craft will build six models from 24 feet to 28 feet in the facility. The expansion also allows the storied boatbuilder to expand their model offering as it looks to continue to meet future customer preferences. Each Chris-Craft is built to order, following a detailed, meticulous process to ensure the finest quality product.

“I’m thrilled to see boats rolling off the new line,” said Chris-Craft President, Steve Heese. “The new building marks an important milestone in the growth of our company and the enhanced production capacity this new building provides will help our dealer network meet demand for our products and ultimately, ensure our customers enjoy incredible experiences on the water.”

Site preparation for the new building began in November of 2021 followed by an official groundbreaking in February 2022. The company anticipates the building will add over 200 jobs to the community and is currently looking to hire in the Sarasota area.

“I am on honored to join Chris-Craft in celebrating the opening of your new facility,” said Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla) in a letter to the company. “Thank you for your work to continue Florida’s economic growth and create

opportunities for families across the state.”

Originally based in Michigan, Chris-Craft has been manufacturing boats in Sarasota, FL since 1988. Chris-Craft was purchased by Winnebago Industries, a leading North American manufacturer of outdoor lifestyle products, in 2018.

“The team at Chris-Craft builds some of the finest boats in the world and I thank them for their effort to bring this facility from vision to reality,” said Michael Happe, Winnebago Industries Chief Executive Officer.

Onion Crusted Grouper with Roasted Corn and Peppers

Ingredients

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 cup red bell pepper, chopped

1 cup green bell pepper, chopped

2 cups fresh corn kernels

1 cup onion, diced

1 teaspoon salt, divided

1 teaspoon fresh-ground black pepper, divided

1 teaspoon dried thyme, divided

4 (6-ounce) grouper fillets

1/2 cup french-fried onion rings, crushed

Directions:

Heat oven to 450 degrees F. Combine 1 tablespoon of the olive oil with red and green bell peppers, corn, onion and 1/2 teaspoon each of the salt, pepper, and thyme in a large ovenproof pan.

Roast mixture in the oven until the corn and peppers start to brown, about 12 minutes, stirring twice. Coat fillets with remaining 1 tablespoon of oil and remaining 1/2 teaspoon of salt, pepper and thyme. Top with crushed onion rings.

Remove roasting pan from oven; spread corn-and-pepper mixture to sides of the pan.

Place fillets in middle of pan; return to oven and cook 10 minutes until fillets are opaque in the center. Serve fillets on a bed of roasted vegetables.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. - The Coast Guard urges recreational boaters, paddlers, anglers, and others to remain safe on the water by taking a Safe Boating Course. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other life-saving lessons. A boating safety course will teach the basic skills to operate a vessel safely. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. To continue offering these classes safely for the students and instructors, they are being offered on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. Because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. Catching Mackerel and Cobia (Tampa Bay Style)

April is the start up month for some of the best fishing Tampa Bay has to offer and this month’s topic are two unsung heroesyou guessed it Spanish mackerel and Cobia.

Spanish mackerel and Cobia follow the bait inside the Skyway Bridge. The bigger baits will hang around tripods, artificial reefs and rocky bottom that abound from channel A just inside the Skyway bridge to the Howard Franklin bridge to the north.

I find Spanish mackerel fishing exciting and most productive for my clients, so I make it a point to start my morning by searching for a school of big mackerel to get the adrenalin going. After boating 30 or 40 mackerel, it’s time to move on and start another hunt.

My method for fishing Spanish mackerel is very simple. Look for the diving birds they will guide you to a good spot if there is bait Spanish mackerel will be there feeding. Once you found the bait anchor and start a chum line to keepthe mackerel feeding behind the boat. Cut greenbacks will work great or a 10-pound box of frozen chum also does the trick.

A must is a good chum bag that can dispense not only the store bought but cut fresh greenback sardines which is my preference why pay for it when you already have in your bait well. I tried all types over

INSHORE REPORT

Snook fishing has been really good around the area the snook are pouring out of the Back Bay water. We see snook already in our passes and even some on our beaches too. It’s like we almost completely skipped spring and moved to summer in some areas. However we still see a really good springtime bite around our local grass flats, mangrove shorelines and different areas as those snook move from the Back Bay to the passes and beaches. We’re seeing them really keyed in on the white bait but live shrimp still work well and of course the soft plastics, the swimbaits, the hard plastic jerk baits are all good options; virtually anything presented naturally is gonna give you an opportunity to catch and wrangle a snook. Be mindful of those solunar major and minor tidal ranges to get the best opportunity for more actively feeding snook.

Trout action is going well around the area we see a lot of those trout on the move from their winter time Hangouts in shallower flats to a little bit of a deeper area. Those potholes, cuts and even some of our local beaches are holding some pretty nice sized speckled trout who are actively feeding well on live shrimp and white bait as well. Trout love those soft plastics especially slow moving soft plastics or slow moving swim baits.

Redfish action has been

active around the area we’re seeing redfish really move around actively and feed aggressively in some schools but also the ones and twos around our local flats mangrove shorelines and some dock lines as those fish migrate to and from the passes to spawn. We’re seeing the redfish really active on the soft plastics the live shrimp and the white bait for the most part they’ve moved right away from the crustacean bite but they’re still taking the occasional live shrimp.

Pompano action is going well around our sandy passes and along our beautiful gulf beaches and local fishing Piers around those sandy areas. We see the Pompano feeding on live shrimp and minimal weight like a split shot with a live shrimp is a good option with 15 to 20 pound fluorocarbon especially around those little troughs that run parallel with the beach. It’s a good area to look for those Pompano cruising up and down our beautiful beaches. We’re also finding plenty of Pompano using the Pompano jigs like the docs goofy jigs or the crazy jigs the naked ball jigs and sometimes even those small the feathered jigs.

Black drum are still active around the area we’re seeing black drum around some of the dock lines the bridges and also occasionally around

chasing from one buoy to another trying to catch Cobia I use a different method that allows my client to fish for other species while catching cobia.

I anchor up on grass flats in the threeto-four-foot depth get my clients started with live sardine on a float letting it drift with the current for trout and some redfish.In the meantime I cut forty or so green back sardines and toss them around the boat within 6 to 7-foot away creating a scent field to attract the large brown southern stingrays. Cobiasare somewhat lazy so they will ride under the big rays as they stir the bottom for food the Cobia are there to help themselves.

Keep one rod ready for action with a live pinfish a favorite or large greenback sardine with a 3/0 circle hook tied to 40-pound fluorocarbon leader and medium spinner like an OKUMA Salina 4000HA spinning reel 30-pound FINS Windtamer braided line and medium heavy rod. The rest is history I been able to pull several nice Cobia with this method and keeping my clients happy catching other spices while we wait to the Cobia to show. You might have to move if the rays don’t show up sometimes it takes making more than one stop but it’s worth the trouble if you can land one on the flats.

local grass flats too. Black drum are generally found using live shrimp on the bottom but can also be found using crabs for bait too.

Jack Crevalle are still around the area starting to thin out a bit but we’re still seeing good numbers of Jack carvelle in the early morning around our Back Bay areas and around some local canals and cuts. We also see them pretty active late afternoon into early night time as well. Generally chasing schools of bait and concentrating the bait along seawalls docks or structures will get them into a feeding frenzy which makes them easy to spot and easy to target.

We’re seeing some flounder around our area. Flounder fishing is picking up around those sandy drop offs and the sandy patches of the grass flats and also even around some local dock structures. We find the flounder most actively feeding live shrimp or bait fish waited to the bottom or slow moving soft plastics right on or just above the bottom.

Lake Tohopekaliga - Freshwater Spring Forecast

Spring bass fishing on Lake Toho here in Central Florida is one of the most productive times for catching good numbers of bass as well as the trophy bass of a lifetime. The reliability of bass fishing on Lake Toho at this time of year is due mainly to the weather becoming very stable and in turn the bass fishing is also very stable and productive at this time of year.

AJ’s Bass Guides has been in operation since 1970 and holds the lake record of 16 pounds 10 ounces which was caught by Ed Chancy the founder of AJ’s Bass Guides in the month of May in 1977 on a black grape paddle tail plastic worm. Captain Jamie Jackson caught the second largest bass out of Lake Toho weighing 15 pounds 8 ounces also in the month of May in 1987 on a rattletrap during the 1987 drawdown. Florida

bass fishing in the spring is the best time of year for catching big bass on large golden wild shiners as well as artificial lures.

If it is artificial lures that you are interested in, springtime is what we consider the best time of year for fishing artificials on Lake Toho. It is not uncommon to catch a 5 bass limit weighing over 30 pounds on artificials at this time of year.

2023 has been one of the best years that we have seen for catching trophy-sized Lake Toho Florida bass in a very long time. As we move into the spring months this type of fishing will continue and the outlook for this spring may be the best that we have seen yet for catching a Lake Toho trophy.

We’re coming in to my favorite time of year to fish in Marathon. The spring months bring spawning migrations and congregations to make for exciting catch-and-release fishing everywhere from offshore to the bridges to the gulf.

Saifishing has been very good this past winter, with many boats returning to the dock boasting double-digit releases.

The depth where you’ll find the sails ranges anywhere from right on the reef out to 200 feet. The key is to have good, blue water. The ideal is powder blue water pushed up against purple water. Waves of three to four feet create what is called “tailing,” which is just what you’d think. The sailfish tails stick out of the water as they surf down the surface of the wave.

Just about any of the usual cast of sailfish baits work, including goggle eyes, pilchards, ballyhoo and cigar minnows. Much as you would with dolphin, pitch your baits in front of the fish. When they see it, typically they light up and attack it. It’s an incredible sight! This is a visual fishery, and it’s not unusual to see 50 sailfish on a day when conditions are perfect.

You may also find dolphin and cobia in the same areas mixed in with the sailfish, so be sure to keep a keen eye out. All the same live baits used for sailfish will attract their interest.

The dolphin are making their appearance earlier every year. With the warm waters currently, they should be piling through now like we usually have to wait until May to see. The first waves of fish are typically slammers and gaffers, with the schoolies following later on.

The seas can be a bit challenging, so be mindful and pick your day. Look for birds –primarily frigates, not terns – on the water surface. They will pinpoint the location of larger dolphin.

While one strategy is to troll lures near the frigates, we recommend employing a skirted Bionic ballyhoo. An option is to visually spot the fish yourself and toss a live bait directly in front of it. Pilchards, goggle eyes and pinfish work well.

Persistence pays to get the fish to eat. Continue trying as long as you can see the fish on the surface. Should you lose sight of it, try trolling in ever-widening circles from where you first saw it. Sometimes these big fish just won’t eat, so it’s best to move on to the next frigate bird on the surface.

There are also plenty of blackfin tuna offshore at the Marathon humps. Sharks tend to be heavy this time of year, so landing larger blackfins of 20 pounds or greater can be an effort in futility.

On the wrecks, the bite for big amberjacks hits its peak as these fish are in the area to spawn. Fish in the 70- to 90-pound class are common.

The mutton snapper bite is also rapid as they, too, begin to gather to spawn later in May and June. Baits for the AJs and muttons are pinfish, pilchards and live ballyhoo.

near the main wreckage and are in massive schools of 300 to 500 fish. The average size is 15 to 25 pounds, with some monsters pushing 40. A small, 2- to 3-inch blue crab fished on a jighead with 20-pound tackle will do the trick for you.

Permit is a catch-and-release fishery, so be sure to release all fish unharmed as they are here to spawn.

Yellowtails are the main event on the reef. The largest specimens can be found in 40 to 60 feet of water. Be sure to use copious amounts of Bionic chum, and any kind of small cut bait or shrimp will work as baits. Just ask your local tackle shop what’s working best in your area.

The tarpon are here in full force around the bridges. Marathon has three players when it comes to bridge fishing for tarpon: Long Key, Seven Mile and Bahia Honda. Baits and techniques vary bridge-to-bridge. Again, check with your local tackle shop.

Of course, if you really want to land big tarpon without wasting a lot of time and money, hire a local guide as we’re highly tuned in to this very specialized fishery.

There also plenty of big-fish action on light tackle with sharks round the shallower flats. For those desiring the ultimate shallow-water challenge, fishing for bonefish, permit and tarpon on the flats is hitting its stride right now.
