Fried Florida Golden Tilefish

Ingredients

4 (5-ounce) Florida Golden Tilefish fillets

1 package of prepared seafood fry mix (your favorite)

½ cup cornstarch

4-5 cups of peanut or vegetable oil for frying

2 lemons, quartered

Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Directions:

Add oil to the pot, making sure not to fill it more than half way. Heat over medium-high until the oil reaches 350 degrees (use a fry thermometer to ensure correct cooking temperature).

Combine the seafood fry mix and cornstarch in a large bowl. Pat the fish fillets and dredge in the dry seafood mix, making sure they are thoroughly and evenly coated.

Carefully add the fillets to the oil and fry until the fish reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees (fry in batches of two to three fillets at a time). This should take about 4 minutes. Very carefully remove from the hot oil and place on paper towels to drain any excess oil.

Lightly season the cooked fillets with salt and pepper, to tastes. Squeeze fresh lemon juice over each fillet. Serve with hush puppies, fries and smoky cocktail sauce.

SPRINGFIELD, Va., April 4, 2023 – How do you know your boat is ready for a safe summer boating season and complies with new U.S. Coast Guard regulations? A no-cost, no-penalty vessel safety check from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and U.S. Power Squadrons/America’s Boating Club can help. Scheduled inspections are often offered at launch ramps, marinas and boat clubs, or appointments can be made for a vessel examiner to come to your boat. Go to cgaux.org/ vsc to learn more. The program is sponsored by the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water. Upon successful completion of the exam, which typically takes less than 30 minutes, the vessel is awarded a U.S. Coast Guard / Auxiliary / U.S. Power Squadrons decal that informs law enforcement and safety agencies that your boat was in full compliance with all federal and state boating laws during a safety check for that year.

So just what items do vessels typically fail on this important early season inspection? According to the U.S. Power Squadrons/America’s Boating Club, the top three reasons are:

Far East Boats Launches ePropulsion-Powered Electric Catamaran

New Boat Announced at China International Boat Show (Shanghai)

Somerset, N.J. – Far East Boats, one of the biggest sailboat builders in China, and ePropulsion, a global leader and market challenger in marine electric propulsion systems and services, announced today the launch of a brand-new electric catamaran, the 42 foot FAREAST 42C. The boat was unveiled at this year’s China (Shanghai) International Boat Show.

The first all-electric catamaran developed by Far East Boats and the first mass-produced catamaran powered by ePropulsion’s integrated propulsion system solution, the FAREAST 42C combines speed with comfort to provide an excellent sailing capability. The catamaran was designed by Simonis Voogd Design, an internationally renowned boat design firm, and features a spacious living area. It adopts a streamlined design and uses extra-long built-in plexiglass portholes to allow passengers to enjoy a 360° unobstructed view in the “living room” and greater natural light in the cabin. The deck layout can be selected from a sport version or a charter version.

Equipped with ePropulsion’s battery, electric propulsion, control and management systems

solution, the catamaran boasts the advantages of all electric motors – quiet performance, zeroemissions and efficient propulsion. The catamaran measures 42-feet and is powered by a pair of ePropulsion 20 kW electric motors. The battery system uses lithium iron phosphate batteries, and up to four batteries can be connected, with a total capacity of 188.41 kWh. The maximum battery life can reach 20 hours, with a range of up to 100 nautical miles in pure electric propulsion mode. All batteries are equipped with an ePropulsion Battery Management System that can monitor the voltage and temperatures of individual batteries in realtime, as well as provide an automatic equalization function.

Integrating wind, solar and battery energy, the catamaran functions entirely on green and zeroemission propulsion. In hydrogeneration mode, the vessel’s range can be greatly extended with power from motor regeneration fed back into the batteries while sailing. While pure electric propulsion mode is activated, the speed can achieve eight knots and can be adjustable according to different battery levels. In certain wind conditions, electric

propulsion works with sail propulsion to achieve a maximum speed of more than 10 knots. The FAREAST 42C comes equipped with a 20kW onboard battery charger and a portable 3kW battery charger to recharge the batteries. Its solar system provides complementary power to replenish the catamaran’s batteries.

The FAREAST 42C features an excellent humanmachine interaction system (HMI) with a Smart Throttle and a 5-inch Smart Display that provides timely and precise control and information display. In addition, it enables boat owners and fleet managers to communicate with the system reliably and securely through ePropulsion’s cloud-based connectivity services. Boat owners can check everything from the location of the boat to battery level, speed and charging status, automatically generate sailing logs, and authorize guests to power on for easy boat sharing and remote monitoring.

This month has been unseasonably warm with record high temperatures for the day being reached. Water clarity has already begun to diminish, adopting the summer time look due to the abundance of algae. Fishing around the lower tides has presented our best sight fishing opportunity over the recent month whether fishing in Hernando County all the way down to Tampa Bay.

With water temperatures on the rise, snook have moved out of their deep temperature stable zones and onto the flats. Fly anglers do well with the puglisi baitfish due to their silent entry and ability to be tied in any color/size variation. Bite tippets should range any where from a 2040 pound, depending on structure, fly size, and pressure. Light tackle anglers have had success on larger paddle tails on weighted swim bait hooks retrieved with haste.

Redfish have become much more aggressive with the warmer temperatures and their willingness to eat a larger fly has been a treat. If we can, I like to throw a fly that’s utilitarian

for all species, retrieve rates coinciding with the target and depth. As mentioned above, puglisi’s do a great job along with larger bend backs and flat wings.

Spotted sea trout have been residing in a little deeper water this “winter” as water temperatures never stayed cold. We start to see big numbers of fish in shallow around and below the 65 degree mark. Let the depth dictate the fly pattern as the fish are always close to or on the bottom. Trout are “suckers” for a presentation that rises and falls. When a fly/bait falls or sinks in front of a fish, we often get what’s called a “reaction strike.”

species we target are predators and when given the chance, will feed at night when natural light is in abundance (digesting during the day). Digesting fish become hyper sensitive to any changes in their environment therefore making your approach direction vital. Wind and tide will carry a boats displacement, footsteps, voices, etc. five times faster underwater than above. Try to always put your target up wind and up tide when possible.

NEARSHORE REPORT

Mackerel action is still going extremely well near shore. We’re seeing mackerel from our beautiful beaches all the way out to around 70 to 80 foot of water. Mackerel generally are caught using trolling set ups near sure when we’re throwing out to our fishing spots in deeper water. However, you can go out there to any near shore, artificial reef or wreck between 3 and 16 miles anchor up and chum, and you will have endless mackerel action surrounding your boat and potentially even some king fish, especially as you get deeper. Generally, for mackerel, a long shank one ot hook is a great option to target the mackerel, using free lined white bait. For the king fish, generally you’re using a stinger rig with light wire and a treble hook combo. When you’re chumming fish to your boat and either drifting or flatline fishing. However, when trolling we’re seeing the mackerel and king fish on King spoons and planers. For more action on the mackerel a smaller spoon works well, while king fish like that 6 inch spoon or larger.

Hog fish action is still going decently near shore this past week. Overall, while the hog fish bite slowed down a bit we’re still seeing some decent numbers of hog fish around the area. Mostly around 30

to 70 foot of water is where we target the hog fish, but this time of year we see them more frequently a little deeper closer to that 70 foot mark. The hog fish are still looking for that light tackle and live shrimp but this time of year as water warms, they spread out they get more leader, shy, less aggressive, and less concentrated around area structures.

Lane snapper action going pretty good nearshore anywhere from about 50 to 100 foot of water. We’re finding decent numbers of lane snapper. While the lane snapper concentrations can fluctuate in areas generally were seen decent numbers of lane snapper overall. Mostly on cut squid or cut thread fins the great bait to target them lane snapper.

Mangrove snapper are mostly deeper nearshore. Once you’re beyond 6070 foot of water up to the deepest nearshore waters, which is 100 foot. We’re seeing those mangrove snapper feeding mostly on the cut threadfin and the double snell rig but we also catch them using live shrimp too. I would generally prefer a double Snell rig with a small chunk of threadfin to target mangrove snapper.

However, many like using the shrimp in a light jig head, but those shrimp can come off the hook, extremely easy, which makes it a little bit more challenging to get dialed in on the mangroves unless you can get them chummed up off the bottom, feeding more in the water column.

Red grouper action nearshore has been a little tricky. We’re seeing more of the red grouper in deeper offshore waters. But if you make it to the deeper nearshore waters, closer to 100 foot, you have a much better chance at finding some keeper red grouper near shore. We’re still seeing a lot of under size red grouper mixed in, which means you have to do a lot of catching and releasing if you’re targeting red grouper near shore in shallow waters, so make sure you’re prepared with the proper tools and techniques to ensure the proper release and safe handling of these under size fish that will be next year And the year after’s keeper fish.

The heat is on. Warm weather, excellent bite for snook and tarpon, recipe for happy anglers.

The warm water temperatures have the linesiders, chewing, striking, live bait, flies and DOA 4” jerk baits. Drop offs along mangrove shorelines and docks have been the main areas to tango with the snook. The past week provided all four species of snook for anglers, making for extremely happy, anglers and guide.

Tarpon aka “Silver king” fishing continues to thrive. Tarpon are roaming in schools along channels chasing bait schools. Rolling fish on the surface, give pinpoint where to cast to get the strike. Live baits, flies and DOA Terror Eyz get the job done.

Small schools of jacks have also added to the fun for anglers. Rapala skitter walks worked along docks and sea walls create awesome explosive strikes. Those looking to

catch a plethora of species, shrimp on the bottom will get the rod bent creating nonstop action for anglers.

Freshwater fishing is on fire, peacock bass, clown, knife, fish, and largemouth are all striking with a vengeance. Live bait for these fish is always a fan favorite, but Rapala twitch baits and flies. Will also get the strike. The bite will continue to stay hot as warm weather continues.

April is in full effect and inshore fishing is hopping along as water temperatures continue to warm up and bait schools start to migrate to our local waters.

We’re coming in to my favorite time of year to fish in Marathon. The spring months bring spawning migrations and congregations to make for exciting catch-and-release fishing everywhere from offshore to the bridges to the gulf.

Saifishing has been very good this past winter, with many boats returning to the dock boasting double-digit releases.

The depth where you’ll find the sails ranges anywhere from right on the reef out to 200 feet. The key is to have good, blue water. The ideal is powder blue water pushed up against purple water. Waves of three to four feet create what is called “tailing,” which is just what you’d think. The sailfish tails stick out of the water as they surf down the surface of the wave.

While one strategy is to troll lures near the frigates, we recommend employing a skirted Bionic ballyhoo. An option is to visually spot the fish yourself and toss a live bait directly in front of it. Pilchards, goggle eyes and pinfish work well.

Persistence pays to get the fish to eat. Continue trying as long as you can see the fish on the surface. Should you lose sight of it, try trolling in ever-widening circles from where you first saw it. Sometimes these big fish just won’t eat, so it’s best to move on to the next frigate bird on the surface.

Marathon/Florida Keys

The permit are often schooled up off the top or very near the main wreckage and are in massive schools of 300 to 500 fish. The average size is 15 to 25 pounds, with some monsters pushing 40. A small, 2- to 3-inch blue crab fished on a jighead with 20-pound tackle will do the trick for you.

Permit is a catch-and-release fishery, so be sure to release all fish unharmed as they are here to spawn.

Yellowtails are the main event on the reef. The largest specimens can be found in 40 to 60 feet of water. Be sure to use copious amounts of Bionic chum, and any kind of small cut bait or shrimp will work as baits. Just ask your local tackle shop what’s working best in your area.

Just about any of the usual cast of sailfish baits work, including goggle eyes, pilchards, ballyhoo and cigar minnows. Much as you would with dolphin, pitch your baits in front of the fish. When they see it, typically they light up and attack it. It’s an incredible sight! This is a visual fishery, and it’s not unusual to see 50 sailfish on a day when conditions are perfect.

You may also find dolphin and cobia in the same areas mixed in with the sailfish, so be sure to keep a keen eye out. All the same live baits used for sailfish will attract their interest.

The dolphin are making their appearance earlier every year. With the warm waters currently, they should be piling through now like we usually have to wait until May to see. The first waves of fish are typically slammers and gaffers, with the schoolies following later on. The seas can be a bit challenging, so be mindful and pick your day. Look for

There are also plenty of blackfin tuna offshore at the Marathon humps. Sharks tend to be heavy this time of year, so landing larger blackfins of 20 pounds or greater can be an effort in futility.

On the wrecks, the bite for big amberjacks hits its peak as these fish are in the area to spawn. Fish in the 70- to 90-pound class are common.

The mutton snapper bite is also rapid as they, too, begin to gather to spawn later in May and June. Baits for the AJs and muttons are pinfish, pilchards

On the artificial reefs off Marathon, we have an excellent permit fishery. This is another visual fishery, although best accomplished with cleaner water and calmer conditions than you want for sailfish.

The tarpon are here in full force around the bridges. Marathon has three players when it comes to bridge fishing for tarpon: Long Key, Seven Mile and Bahia Honda. Baits and techniques vary bridge-to-bridge. Again, check with your local tackle shop.

Of course, if you really want to land big tarpon without wasting a lot of time and money, hire a local guide as we’re highly tuned in to this very specialized fishery.

There also plenty of big-fish action on light tackle with sharks round the shallower flats. For those desiring the ultimate shallow-water challenge, fishing for bonefish, permit and tarpon on the flats is hitting its stride right now.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC)

is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutuallyconvenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat.

2023 - The Coast Guard urges recreational boaters, paddlers, anglers, and others to remain safe on the water by taking a Safe Boating Course. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other lifesaving lessons. A boating safety course will teach the basic skills to operate a vessel safely. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. To continue offering these classes safely for the students and instructors, they are being offered on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. Because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom –the students can be anywhere in Florida! Classes are $50 per student and include books, supplemental materials, and course completion certificates. The next classes begin in January and continue monthly.
