The Top 5 Sunscreen and Sun Safety Tips for Boaters

Sun safety is crucial for all boaters. While spending a sunny day on the boat is enjoyable, it’s vital to be aware of the potential problems caused by the sun.

Sunburn discomfort is just one concern; other issues include the risk of skin cancer, sun spots, and premature aging due to overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. However, following proper sunscreen and sun-safety techniques can significantly reduce the damage and allow you to still enjoy your time on the water.

In this post, we’ll review the top sunscreen and general sun safety tips every boater should remember this season.

5 Essential Sunscreen Tips for Boaters

1. Apply sunscreen to any exposed skin.

2. Remember to reapply every two hours, after swimming, or when sweating excessively, as protection diminishes over time.

3. Choose between sprays, lotions, or rub-on sticks based on what works best for you and encourages regular reapplication.

4. Remember commonly neglected areas like your lips, hair part, tops of ears and feet, and the backs of your legs. Additionally, use a lip balm with at least SPF 15.

5. Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going out in the sun to allow proper absorption. Aim for an amount that could fill a shot glass to cover an average adult’s body.

Best Sunscreen for Boaters: Modern sun products are designed to prioritize protection by limiting the amount of UV rays (both UVA and UVB types) that reach your skin.

While UVB was traditionally considered more harmful due to sunburn and skin cancer, UVA rays are also damaging, causing long-term skin aging, wrinkles, and sunspots.

Before heading out on your boat, choose a “broad-spectrum” sunscreen that protects against both types of radiation. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 or higher.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. We understand BUSY. The Banana River Sail and Power Squadron teaches a large number of classes. They are regularly scheduled throughout the year. Sometimes your schedule and our schedule do not match. Rather than have you miss a class offering we will schedule and teach any of the classes listed below whenever five (5) or more students make a request for a class. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the

examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutuallyconvenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. FLORIDA BOATER’S ID CARD- Don’t forget that “Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 is required to either have successfully completed a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved boating education course or have passed a course equivalency or temporary certificate examination and have in their possession a boating education ID card and a photo identification card before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 HP or more in Florida.” Identification cards for persons completing the course or the equivalency exam are good for a lifetime. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other lifesaving lessons. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. Through out the year a familiar question comes up on my boat as I’m often asked what are my favorite fish to target here in Florida. With over 20 different species of fish available here along the Nature Coast it’s really hard to choose favorites but if I had to choose my top three it would be hard to beat a great Jack, Snook, or Tarpon bite. Each of these species are similar in a way that all three inhabit similar habitats, enjoy ambushing prey around similar structures, and are available 365 days a year throughout Florida.

Where these fish differ is within their swimming patterns. Snook are usually very solitary meaning that they stake out a spot and rarely move unless a change in weather or continuous dolphin pressure ruins their stakeout. Jacks are marauders and are always on the move continuously hunt for anything and everything that moves. Tarpon on the other hand have decades old swimming patterns and

migrate when wind, seas, and water temperatures agree with their spawning rituals.

A second question that often comes up during a day of fishing is: What’s you’re favorite type of fishing? As I mentioned before my favorite species to target are aggressive feeding Jacks, Snook, and Tarpon. When these fish are in their chew mode it’s hard to beat targeting these fish on Topwater Lures early in the mornings, late in the evenings, and on over cast days. Walk the Dog style lures such as Zara Spooks, Mirrolures, and Rapala Skitterwalks are just a few of my favorites but honestly I think that these species will eat any lure that creates a surface commotion when their hungry.

For those fly anglers that are looking for an added challenge try throwing topwater version flies such as poppers, gurglers, and even some of the newer toad style patterns that utilize floating foam for the head portion instead of yard or EP fibers. sharp strips will

ensure the fly pushes water and creates a disturbance hooked jaw fish just can’t resist.

With the “dog days of summer on our door step fishing sunrise and sunsets situations will surely pay off for those lucky anglers willing to get up early or leave the dock late. One thing’s for sure: You will see my boat out on the flats at the crack of dawn. Dawn Patrol is in my Blood and it usually only takes one beautiful sunrise to get into your soul.

INSHORE REPORT

Snook action is going extremely well around the tampa bay region. Especially around Hubbard’s Marina and Johns Pass. We are seeing snook starting to really stage up in the passes and then move onto the beautiful gulf beaches during the day. We are seeing some really big snook hanging around the pass throughout the whole day too and some actively feeding even at off times. However, if you hide a major or minor solunar tidal period we are seeing truly incredible action around our passes. The beaches during the early morning hours are great options for the snook but you have to cruise the beach and find them. Then set up in front of them so they swim into your live shrimp, grunts or lures. However, on the beaches with this clean water it takes extremely light tackle and a stealthy approach. IN the passes, especially at night you have a much better chance of fooling the snook into feeding.

Mangrove snapper action around the inshore waters is going nuts at the moment. We are already seeing those summertime clouds of hungry mangrove snapper around the docks, piers, bridges and jetties. Plus, rock piles of tampa bay are starting to hold them too. Its that time of year when we see them start to set up for a long summer of voracious feeding around virtually any structures. The same areas once ruled by concentrations of sheepshead are being invaded and taken over by schools of piranha like mangrove snapper. Just this past week fishing the docks with my kids we had impressive schools of mangrove balled up eating just about anything we put

into the water. Lighter tackle, small hooks, and a small piece of cut bait is great fun to target the mangrove snapper and good fun for any age or level experienced angler.

Trout action is going steady throughout Boca Ceiga bay and Tampa bay areas. Plus, around Johns Pass we are seeing some good numbers of the speckled trout. They are really thick around the pass at night on dock lights and bridge lights. During the day, we are seeing trout around the jetties and on the beaches too. Really big trout lately too, some good overall size this time of year is common with the abundance of bait. We are seeing some in the back bay around the mangrove islands and grass flats too. Look for them in areas where they can feed opportunistically without expelling or expending much if any effort.

Redfish action is going well around the flats, mangroves and oyster bars. We are seeing a few here and there around the pass and jetties but not as much as the back bay flats. The night time will sometimes have them on the bottom near the dock and bridge lights under the bait and snook. However, for the most part targeting them around the shadows of mangroves is a great idea come the warmer summer months. Cut threadfin, pinfish, ladyfish or mullet in little 2-3 inch chunks becomes a great method to target them this time of year. However, the soft plastic paddle tail never goes out of style for the redfish either Tarpon action has really stacked up around bay area bridges, passes and even on our beaches too.

We are seeing the tarpon roll around the johns pass bridge in the early morning and throughout the night. We even see a few swim our docks especially upon cutting fish behind trips returning from offshore fishing charters.

Mackerel are still around, but in much less concentrations. Mostly around the passes and outer bay or deeper parts of the inner Tampa bay area. They love deeper fast-moving water where bait is heavily present or persistent. Fishing piers, bridges, and passes are good areas to look or right on the beaches around those hard bottom areas at the mouths of passes.

Flounder are pretty active around the inshore waters of Tampa bay right now as well. We are seeing flounder hanging by the docks, bridge, flats, and other areas that may have bait present. They lie in wait down tide of these areas waiting for shrimp, baitfish, or anything really to get pushed their way. They are extreme ambush predators lying in wait on the bottom for anything to get too close.

Shark action has picked up inshore too, and will only continue to increase as we continue to move into the summertime patterns more and more. The blacktip and bonnet head sharks become more and more prolific and sometimes others too. This is common in the summer we will see more and more of these guys and even the pups too.

It has been an incredible kite fishing season on the Double D. We thought two big yellowfin tunas in Miami on light tackle was incredible, but since the last report we landed our third and biggest yellowfin tuna on 20-pound tackle. Three yellowfin tunas in one season in absolutely mind blowing. We had some good luck, good anglers and good tackle to make it happen. This last tuna was hooked perfectly in the corner of the mouth with a VMC circle hook. I credit the new Sufix Neon Fire monofilament for holding up each and every time. This fish weighed in at 129 pounds and we fought it for 1 hour and 45 minutes. We had the fish up and I had the dart in my hand and at the last moment the fish lunged toward the motors, and I missed with. I was devastated but I was determined to get her. 10 minutes later the fish rose and raced on the surface, and I threw the dart a good 20 feet and nailed the fish. It was a sic shot and what relief after missing her the first time. It was a stud of a yellowfin.

Since that yellowfin we have caught a slew of sailfish, a bunch of blackfin tunas here in Miami and some more yellowfin in the Bahamas. We also caught a 400-pound blue marlin in Bimini.

We made two back-to-back trips to Bimini this month. The first trip was dedicated to tuna fishing in the NW Channel. Here we are using 30- and 50-pound class gear targeting the tunas. We ended up catching a dozen tunas, mixed between big blackfins and yellowfins. Our second trip we went bottom fishing mostly for yellowtail snappers and trolling for pelagics. The yellowtail fishing was phenomenal with big flags chummed up to within a few feet of the boat. Our day of trolling ended up being phenomenal as well. Our target was blue marlin, and we went all out with dredges, squid chains, lures, ballyhoo etc. We missed a small blue marlin early in the day and then just before calling it quits, we had a big blue marlin up on the short ballyhoos. This fish was lit up and stayed in the spread for well over minute switching back and forth between the right short and left short. It finally ate the right short ballyhoo, and it was game on! We hooked the fish on 30-pound class conventional tackle with 80-pound leader and on stand-up tackle. After an hour or so we got this beautiful 400-pound blue marlin next to the boat and with leader in hand got her a healthy release. What a great fish especially for Bimini.

On this side in Miami, we have done extremely well on sailfish and big blackfin tunas. We have had two double digit release days on sailfish since the last report. Sailfishing has

been extremely good this whole season. The blackfin tuna fishing has also been outstanding with the bigger 30 pound plus tunas showing up. Just yesterday we caught 5 out 8 blackfins and the biggest was over 30 pounds.

May has come to a close. We have a couple more weeks of sailfish and blackfin tuna fishing and then we are going to shift gears to Mahi fishing offshore, fishing in Bimini for snappers and tunas and daytime swordfish here in the Gulfstream. Today I had two trips and I can tell you I was not looking forward to it, not because of the clients but because of the crazy boat traffic. Well, I launched the boat in the early morning craziness and long time

Well, with Kevin and the guys aboard we hit the flats for sharks and there was hardly anyone on the flats. Yes! After the guys each hooked and caught sharks we decided to bonefish as that was something Kevin had mentioned. It was towards the end of the tide and the current was starting to wane but eventually we found some fish and Kevin landed his first bonefish, a really nice one! Not long after we headed back and enjoyed the thrill of Kevin’s first bonefish.

Tailing Bonefish Fest! May 26, 2023

I took a few days off and was back to work today with local angler Henry and his friend Mike from S.C. and they wanted to fish the flats. Well, with perfect conditions “fishing the flats” means bonefish! I started off fishing a point I like with the outgoing

From the moment we got there it was constant shots at tailing bonefish. WOW! But, they were spooky with no wind, calm conditions and super shallow water. After a ton of shots Mike hooked a nice fish and deep into the long run the bone spit the hook. Heartbreak! More shots and more shots and Henry drops his shrimp way in front of a school of tailing bonefish and Mike does the same. We watch the school move towards their shrimp and Mile in on again but this time the bone stayed hooked and the pic below proves it. Shortly after it was time to head in just as the tide died off and so did the fishing. I love mornings like this!

Grilled Florida Mahi-Mahi w/Mango Fried Rice

Ingredients

• 4 (6-ounce) Florida mahi-mahi fillets

• 1 large Florida mango, peeled and chopped (seed removed)

• 1 fresh Florida chili pepper, sliced (for heat if desired)

• 2 Florida eggs

• 2 teaspoons Asian 7 spice blend (or Chinese 5 spice blend)

• 2 teaspoons vegetable oil, divided

• 4 cups pre-cooked rice (leftover rice is the best to use)

• 1 bunch scallions, rinsed and chopped small

• 1 teaspoon fresh garlic, chopped fine

• 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, peeled and chopped fine

• 1 teaspoon sesame seed blend (black, white and toasted)

• 2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce (plus more to serve on the side if desired)

• Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

• Fresh cilantro, for garnish

Preparation:

Preheat a charcoal grill or grill pan to medium-high. Season the fish fillets evenly with 1 teaspoon of the spice blend. Lightly and evenly drizzle 1 teaspoon of the vegetable oil over the seasoned fillets. Carefully place the seasoned and oiled fillets on the preheated grill or grill pan. Let cook for 2 to 3 minutes before carefully flipping each fillet. Let cook for another 2 to 3 minutes. If cooking on a charcoal grill, move the fish fillets to a cooler spot on the grill so they can finish cooking. If using a grill pan, place in a 375-degree oven until the fillets are cooked through.

While the mahi is cooking, preheat a wok or large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil to the preheated pan. Carefully crack each egg and add to the oiled sauté pan. Cook and scramble the eggs by working them around the pan. When the eggs are cooked and scrambled, add the garlic, ginger, hot chilis if desired and diced mango. Continue to cook while stirring. Season the egg mixture with the remaining teaspoon of the spice blend. Make a spot in the middle of the pan to add the pre-cooked rice. Continue to cook ingredients while stirring. Add the sesame seeds and chopped scallions and continue to cook for another couple minutes. Carefully add the soy sauce and continue to stir. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Remove fried rice from the heat and let sit for 2 minutes before serving.

Serve the grilled mahi with the mango fried rice. Garnish with sprigs of fresh cilantro if desired. Serve with extra soy sauce.
