2023 P1 Offshore and AquaX Championships

APBA and UIM Class 1 Powerboats are heading to Sarasota on Jun 30th to the 2nd of July for another round of the 2023 P1 Offshore and AquaX Championships. Around 90 competitors are expected for two days of world-class marine motorsport action.

It is the 38th annual Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix. The weekend of 1st - 2nd of July will see high-performance racing along Lido Beach.

Located on Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast, Sarasota County provides the quintessential white-sand beach getaway, perfect for absorbing the noise, power and excitement of a double-bill of powerboat and personal watercraft racing.

Dubbed the “Home of the American Circus,” Sarasota County served as the headquarters for the Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus for 75 years, and fans can experience its special culture first-hand by following the circus trail or catching a performance by one of two local circus companies.

After the pounding Atlantic swell of Cocoa Beach, P1 Offshore now moves to the more tranquil, shallower waters of the Gulf of Mexico. However, if you are expecting a less exciting race, think again...

Sarasota is the second longest-running US powerboat race, after the Key West Championship.

Compared to Cocoa Beach, Sarasota is a more technical course. Cocoa Beach is long and narrow, running up and down the beach, with two 180 degree turns. Sarasota has varying degrees of right turns and a leftward dog-leg on the backward stretch. Although the water at Sarasota looks calmer, there are often holes, or variations on the seabed, which create voids on the surface. These can cause unexpected flights or hits, so are difficult for drivers to anticipate.

The water will suit the Class 1 and Super Cat for top speeds. The light chop will be less likely to upset the bigger hulls and will be enough to keep traction high with the hull skimming the surface.

Super Stock has the most entries among the bigger boats and is one of the most competitive offshore classes for this reason.

Mod V teams will also be highly competitive. Sarasota will definitely be a driver’s race for these boats if the water remains relatively calm. The varied turns in calm waters can cause “chine walking” with their V hulls. “OK, so what is chine walking?” Chine walking is caused when a highperformance V-Hull starts to lift out of the water. In certain circumstances, as speed increases, the actual part of the hull in contact with the water becomes reduced, and the boat starts to rock from one side to another as it tries to balance the remaining hull in contact with the water. This gives the drivers more work to do. Boat set-up and trim also play an important part.

Shrimp and Blue Crab Pizza

Ingredients

1/2 pound medium shrimp, peeled and cooked

1 (12-inch) pizza crust

1/2 cup prepared pesto sauce

1 cup blue crabmeat

1 ½ cups shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese

2 tablespoons olive oil

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2. Cut shrimp into bite-size pieces; set aside.

3. Place flatbread on sheet pan and spread pesto sauce over each flatbread leaving 1/2 inch crust at edges.

4. Top evenly with shrimp and crab pieces; add a thin layer of mozzarella.

5. Drizzle olive oil over all then sprinkle with paprika.

6. Bake for 25 minutes mid-oven until cheese is melted and bubbling.

7. Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes.

8. Slide pizzas onto a cutting board; slice and serve.

Wraith Powerboats Tooling 40’

Wraith Powerboats of Lake Havasu, AZ, builder of a stylish 28-foot highperformance catamaran, is hard at work tooling a 40-foot center console model it hopes to have competed by the 2024 boating season, according to company owner Gene Cunningham.

“The boat will be called the 40’ Draugr (pronounced drowger),” Cunningham says. The name refers to an undead creature from Norse mythology, often guarding buried treasure. “The word Wraith means ghost, so we’re using another ghost theme.”

The introduction of the Draugr represents the first time a West Coast muscleboat builder has officially thrown its hat into the proverbial ring to compete with the proliferation of East Coast center consoles, although a number of others have expressed interest over the years. “We’re in the tooling stage right now and we should have a boat wet within probably about 10 months,” Cunningham says. “We’ve been around for five years, we have a beautiful catamaran and we’ve been seeing a lot of center consoles coming to Havasu. They’re kind of a hot commodity now, so we’ve just decided to build one. We’re going to make a sick center console.”

The boat will be 40 feet in length, with an 11foot beam, and will be powered by quad Mercury Racing 450R outboards. “We’ve designed it to have a full cabin, with a galley, a nice-sized bed, a TV, shower,” Cunningham says. “It’s going to be a beautiful boat.”

MTI Announces All-New 480 Sterndrive Model at 25th Anniversary Celebration

Marine Technology Inc. of Wentzville, MO, announced that it is tooling a new 48-foot sterndrive pleasure catamaran, with reimagined designs––providing an updated and contemporary look of the popular model.

The MTI team made the announcement of their new MTI 480 this evening at an elaborate, semi-formal dinner party at the Camden on the Lake Resort, celebrating the company’s 25th Anniversary in Lake of the Ozarks, MO. They hosted a threeday owners run weekend in LOTO, with run stops at the Fish and Co., The Cave, Performance Boat Center, Coconuts Resort and Backwater Jack’s.

Built and designed from the ground up, the 480 will replace MTI’s current 48’ pleasure catamaran. The new model features completely new tooling and molds, a longer running surface, wider tunnel, shorter bustle, a new deck and a completely new cockpit design––highlighted by seating for eight. The 480 will also surpass the previous 48’ in handling and performance, according to MTI’s Director of Customer Relations, Taylor Scism. “We didn’t modify the old 48’ whatsoever,” she told Speedboat. “It’s all completely brand new.” The 480 will typically be powered by Mercury Racing’s dual-fuel calibration 1350/1100 sterndrive engines.

Scism said that this new I/O was timed to coincide with the company’s 25th Anniversary milestone.

“Our roots are inboards, so we want to keep that segment alive,” she said. “We’ve always loved building the inboards—those have been some of our favorite projects every year. I think the new 480 will help revamp that market. At the same time, I believe the Mercury Racing QC4v engines are going through revamps as well. So I think it’ll be a great package, and people can go out there and have a little bit of extra warranty on the inboards and really enjoy themselves.”

Company founder Randy Scism added: “When you have a boat recognized by so many owners as a benchmark, you have to study every detail and push the boundaries to raise the bar again. With this model, we are taking inboard power to the next level. The new MTI 480 will enable customers to take full advantage of the reliable, warrantied power offered by Mercury Racing, and go further in their own boating experience.”

What Kind of Boat Must Be Registered?

Generally, boats must be registered in their state if they have a gasoline, diesel, or electric motor, including a trolling motor.

Personal Watercraft (PWCs) are considered motorized crafts and must be registered in most states. Sailboats without auxiliary power must be registered if over a certain size, like eight feet, but that differs by state. The registration requirements for kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, rowboats, and other human-powered craft also vary by state, but most don’t need to be registered.

In most states, you can also register a boat with the Department of Motor Vehicles. In some cases, it may be with the Department of Fish and Game, the Department of Licensing, or the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Boat Registration Numbers and Stickers

A boat registration number is its license plate and includes letters and numbers that must be displayed on the hull, near the bow, on the front third of the boat on both sides.

The letters and numbers must be read from left to right and may have a minimum size (usually around 3-inch block letters, which can be bought in most hardware stores). The numbers can also be painted onto the boat.

A registration sticker or decal proves your boat registration is valid for that year. The length of validity varies by state but can be from one to three years.

What is the difference between boat registration and vessel documentation?

Most smaller boats are registered with the state. Vessels of at least five net tons that are 51% or more owned by a US citizen may be federally documented with the US Coast Guard. A documented vessel is recognized as a US vessel when in foreign waters and, as such, enjoys some protections. Applying for documentation requires a fee, an application, a hailing (home) port, and a boat name.

Do I have to pay property taxes on a documented vessel?

Yes. You will receive a state tax bill even on a federally documented boat with the US Coast Guard.

Does a dinghy need to be registered?

Yes, if the dinghy has an outboard. All motorized vessels that operate on public waterways must be titled and registered.

Do boat trailers need to be registered?

Yes. A trailer is usually registered in addition to the boat since the two vehicles can be separated.

Where can I buy boat registration numbers?

Travis Pastrana to Pilot Pothole Heroes

Quartet of world champions to go headto-head in next Class 1 race in Sarasota. Powerboat P1, promoter of the UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship, has confirmed that defending Class 1 world champion Travis Pastrana will team-up with two-time UIM and defending RWO world champion Johnny Tomlinson for the second round of this year’s campaign in Sarasota on 30 June – 2 July.

The news throws up the mouthwatering prospect of a quartet of world champions in similar Victory hulls going head-to-head in round 2, with the additional intrigue of wheelman Pastrana taking on Brit Lilly, the man whose seat he stepped into after the opening race of 2022.

Pastrana, a world-renowned stunt performer and extreme sports legend impressed on his UIM debut season, winning twice, and picking up two further podiums alongside Steve Curtis to clinch the title. He is relishing the prospect of the upcoming head-to-head and replacing owner/driver Carlos de Quesada to partner racing legend Tomlinson in Pothole Heroes. “Carlos has motor racing commitments to fulfil in Le Mans that weekend, so I decided to skip the racing I had planned, not only to jump at the chance to get back into a Class 1 and go up against my teammates from last year, Steve and my good friend Brit, but to race alongside

the great Johnny Tomlinson.” he said. “Steve and Brit did great to take the win in Cocoa Beach last weekend, but I am looking forward to pushing them as hard as I can and showing them who’s boss in Sarasota.”

Lilly and Curtis completed the Cocoa Beach double last time out after a sensational last gasp win, passing an ailing and slowing 222 Offshore in the closing stages of the race to successfully kick-start their title defence in Huski Ice Spritz. “It’s going to be something special that’s for sure,” said multiple world champion Curtis. “We are all good friends and have a lot of respect for each other, but on the water we are all supercompetitive and will be giving it 110 percent.”

Southwest Coast West Central Florida with Captain Ray Markham

Lunar influences this weekend with Saturday’s full moon will have some positive effects on fish and how they feed. Inshore and offshore anglers will both benefit by the effects of barometric pressure changes and tidal movements.

OFFSHORE/ NEARSHORE

They may not be fish that are targeted often on the Gulf Coast, but gray triggerfish are mighty tasty table fare. The season closed in the Gulf state and federal waters Thursday, June 1, 2023, but reopens on August 1, 2023. I had just a few reports over the past month or so of anglers catching them.

The Lionfish Challenge begins June 1 and runs through October 1, 2023. The statewide program encourages both recreational and commercial participants and offers a tiered prize system to encourage continued harvest. All participants are required to register at FWCReefRangers.com.

If you’re bottom fishing, you might find it a bit difficult to get baits to the bottom during periods of strong tidal movement. Working the tide changes could help. A variety of snappers, including mangrove, vermilion, and lane have been caught in the 40-to-100-foot range. Hogfish continue to chew in this range as well, although fewer fish are being caught. The night bite for snapper will be a bright spot this weekend.

Plenty of tarpon have been showing along the beaches out to about a mile, but another report this week had a giant school of tarpon spotted out in over 400 feet of water in the Gulf. Capt. Ryan Harrington of St. Petersburg said the bite this week has been insane. Tarpon are somewhat like dinosaurs in that they have long lifespans. Much is still unknown about these fish and their migrations and spawning habits but the group, Bonefish & Tarpon Trust has been making strides to understand more about these fish. Bluewater fishing is heating up with blackfin tunas, wahoo,

dolphin, and a few sailfish. Anglers following the currents and eddies in the Gulf are also finding some blue marlin, white marlin, and swordfish.

Good visibility near shore has made for some excellent sight fishing around Egmont Key for cobia. The channel leading out of Tampa Bay into the Gulf has been a longtime holding location for good numbers of cobia as well as tarpon. The channel markers hold plenty of bait and whenever you find spotted eagle rays or other rays, it’s a good idea to check for cobia that follow. Those same channel markers and buoys will hold tripletail so don’t pass up the opportunity to check them out. A medium to medium/ heavy action spinning rod will take almost any tripletail we have off the beaches. Speaking of the beaches, don’t forget to run the swim buoys along the beaches as well. While they get checked frequently by early bird anglers, they can still be productive at almost any time.

Mangrove snapper continue to increase in numbers closer to shore and inside Tampa Bay. Look for the action to be good this weekend around this full moon.

The Gulf red snapper season opens June 16th.

INSHORE

Good action up and down the coast from Tarpon Springs to Venice has been reported much of the week. Everything from bluefish, Spanish mackerel, trout, and snook to tarpon, cobia, pompano, and black drum were reported in the catch. The one spot that did not shine was the redfish. Sure, there are some smaller areas where catches are being reported, but overall it seems the redfish numbers appear to be down.

Perhaps your best shot at catching some redfish might be on the incoming tides up around the mangroves using cut pinfish or small live pinfish for bait. Chunked ladyfish will also work. But the scent trail is what these fish will be attracted to, particularly with the good moving water.

The low tides in the mornings upcoming will push fish into potholes and channels off the flats. Paddletail jigs such as the MirrOlure Marsh Minnow and the CAL Shad from DOA Lures in the 3-inch model and similar lures continue to dominate some of the

most consistent catches of fish. The big variety that these lures are productive with is remarkable.

This full moon has traditionally been the one where the afternoon outgoing tide will flush shrimp out of the bays and into the Gulf to spawn. This makes for a great opportunity to dip shrimp at night on the flats surrounding the passes exiting into the Gulf. A pair of tennis shoes, shorts, a headlamp, and a small meshed dip net are all you need. One great spot for this activity is along the flats around Bunces Pass. Water movement during the early evening peaks, carrying shrimp with it. You might find them clinging to floating seaweed along with blue crabs or pass crabs. If you’re a tarpon angler, this is the peak time to gather some crabs for bait and also for fishing for tarpon with them. The same goes for shrimp. With the abundance of mangrove snapper moving into the area, live shrimp are going to be one of the top live baits for many species, including mangrove snapper.

FRESHWATER

Warm weather bassin’ can be outstanding on local bodies of water like Lake Tarpon. A top bait for big lunker largemouth bass is the wild shiner. Rigged on a Kahle hook or circle hook and suspended under a cork, these lively baits will swim around the perimeter of heavy cover trying to hide from hungry bass. When you see your cork start to move and the baitfish get active, you know that something is looking to eat it. The circle hook might be the best hook to use because setting the hook isn’t quite as important because of the design of the hook. A firm steady pull on the fish with a tight line is best for setting these hooks and landing these fish. Even the big ones love to jump, so make sure you keep that line tight.

Capt. Angie Douthit, down in Lake Okeechobee, is a pro at catching and putting anglers on monster bass down south. The ‘Big O’, as it’s sometimes called, is noted as one of the top big bass lakes in the country.

Catching Memories: A Fishing Adventure with Brothers!

I had the day off on Tuesday, so I decided to go fishing. I reserved a boat and invited my friends Don and Lee to join me. Since Don was finishing his shift, we started our day a little later than usual. Lee arrived at my house around 6:45 am, and we made it to the dock by 7:15 am. After loading up the boat, we were ready to head out just as Don arrived.

We departed the dock around 7:35 am, and our first stop was to pick up pilchards from War Daddy Baits. Once we got our bait, we headed out of Fort Pierce Inlet. The conditions were a bit rougher than expected, but still manageable enough to make the run to the boils. I had heard reports of permit being caught along our beaches all week, so I was excited to see what the day had in store for us.

Around 8:15 am, we arrived at the boils, and there were already four other boats present. Unfortunately, the water was dirtier than I had hoped. Considering the murky conditions, I wasn’t very optimistic about catching a permit, but I set up for a drift anyway. With the northeast wind and currents, we drifted northwest. About five minutes into our drift, Lee hooked the first fish, a nice-sized blue runner. Not long after, Lee caught a catfish, which wasn’t a good sign. We completed our drift and I decided to make a run to the shallow reefs.

the inlet and started live-lining pilchards. We began at the northeast jetty rocks and drifted along the north side towards the west. Lee had two fish hooked, but unfortunately, the first one popped off, and the second one cut his line. Unfortunately, we didn’t land anything at this spot.

On our way back, we made a stop at the South Causeway bridge to give it a shot. We had many bites, but in the end, we only landed one fish to add to the cooler—a 10inch lane snapper. I was jigging with Tania’s favorite jig about halfway through our drift along the bridge when I hooked up with something nice. However, shortly into the fight, it came off. When I brought my line in, I noticed that the lower hook and snap ring were all gone. It’s always disappointing to lose a big fish, but at least I knew it wasn’t my fault.

We decided to call it a day at 2:30 pm. Although we didn’t catch the permit we were after, we still managed to put a few fish in the cooler and overall, we had a great day! Tania and I pray that everyone who goes out for the rest of the week has a safe and blessed trip. May you all have tight lines and good times.

By 9:00 am, we reached the shallow reefs located about 7 miles southeast of Fort Pierce Inlet. It was a rough ride in the 22-ft Cobia due to the swell and chop, but we managed to reach our destination. Initially, we started by drifting over the reefs, but the winds and current were causing us to drift too fast. So, we decided to anchor up. While we had pilchards on both the surface and bottom, it was the shrimp that attracted all the bites. Despite the slow bite, we managed to put a few fish in the cooler. I landed a decentsized black margate, Don caught a nice-sized sheepshead, and Lee, now known as the cat whisperer, caught another catfish and a 3-ft shark.

After spending a few hours moving from reef to reef in search of more fish, we decided to head back into the inlet. Since we had plenty of bait, we stopped at

A Memorable Fishing Adventure: Snook Hunting on the Treasure Coast

On Thursday, shortly after I dropped Tania off at work, I headed to the local spillway in hopes to get my three entries for the Treasure Coast Chapter of Salt Strong Fishing Tournament. With the sun low on the horizon,

About 6:30am, I started with the Moonwalker topwater bait. I was excited to catch a snook on the topwater bait and I had several fish hit the bait within the first few casts. About 15 minutes into my fishing adventure my bait went down and I felt the tug on my line. It wasn’t a large snook, about 16 inches, but it was my first snook on topwater and it became my first entry into the tournament.

After about 45 minutes fishing with the topwater, and only catching one fish

I decided to change it up as I needed to catch two more snook. I ran to the local bait shop, Jigz and Tackle, to get some shiners. Once I got there, I found out they did not have any bait. I proceeded to call every tackle shop in the area and got the same answer, no one had any shiners. I was told once a year for about month shiners are hard to come by.

Reading the conditions and making changes is a crucial skill in fishing, and I quickly realized that I needed to adjust my approach. Opting for a Slam Shady 2.0 Golddiger paddle tail lure, rigged on an Owner twist lock #4 hook. I really should have used a #3 hook however I was traveling lite and didn’t have any with me, so I used what I had. My decision paid off as my second cast I felt the thump and my line went tight. After a short fight I landed a 24in snook.

Unfortunately, I did not catch any more fish before I ran out of time. I was hoping to catch three snook but was pleased with the two I landed. This was my last fishing trip for the next two weeks as Tania and I are going on vacation. In this time away I will not be posting on my blog. We pray everyone has a blessed weekend! A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded

to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutuallyconvenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. After successful inspection you are awarded a vessel safety check sticker which is affixed to your vessel near your state registration sticker. FLORIDA BOATER’S ID CARD- Don’t forget that “Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 is required to either have successfully completed a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved boating education course or have passed a course equivalency or temporary certificate examination and have in their possession a boating education ID card and a photo identification card before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 HP or more in Florida.” Identification cards for persons completing the course or the equivalency exam are good for a lifetime. Temporary Certificate exams are made available to the public through contractors. The temporary certificate is valid for 12 months from the issue date. BOAT AMERICA CLASSES – CLEARWATER, FLORIDA COAST GUARD AUXILIARY2023 - The Coast Guard urges recreational boaters, paddlers, anglers, and others to remain safe on the water by taking a Safe Boating Course. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other lifesaving lessons. A boating safety course will teach the basic skills to operate a vessel safely. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. To continue offering these classes safely for the students and instructors, they are being offered on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. Because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom –the students can be anywhere in Florida! Classes are $50 per student and include books, supplemental materials, and course completion certificates. The next classes begin in January and continue monthly. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license.
