New Images Reveal Fresh Design for Fairline’s New Targa 40

Luxury British boatbuilder Fairline has revealed new interior and exterior images of its all-new model the Targa 40, which will make its world debut at boot Düsseldorf 2024.

Following the success of the iconic Targa 38, which proved to be one of the brand’s most popular models when it launched in 2006 and with over 300 built over the following decade, the new images prove this sporty and sleek new addition is guaranteed to turn heads.

Embracing a bold exterior design direction, with a modern bluff-bow hull, and a contemporary and stylish interior, the Targa 40 delivers a sophisticated and modern yet sporty style sure to delight every owner.

The Targa 40 has an open cockpit design with a hardtop and electric canvas sunroof, opening the whole main deck. Echoing the lines and extensive glazing seen across the Fairline range, the Targa 40 floods the interior with natural light and uninterrupted views of the water.

The new Targa 40 has been designed with usable space in mind and features a power-down beach club balcony to starboard. Twin sunbeds with floating backrests convert into sofas for guests to enjoy.

Featuring a large C-shaped seating / dining area and companion seating to port, a wet bar is nestled behind the two individual helm seats. The beautifully proportioned and ergonomically designed helm console is part of a wider focus on technology at Fairline. The latest Garmin touch screen multi-function displays enhance the customer experience with a simplified and intuitive user interface allowing integrated control of all essential systems. Moving to the foredeck, the expansive sunbeds dominate, and the addition of a forwardfacing sofa at the bow enables guests to enjoy the views whilst cruising.

Dr. Anne Kolker Honored with 2023 BoatUS/ NWSA Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award

SPRINGFIELD, Va., June 5, 2023 – Dr. Anne Kolker grew up sailing, first as a youngster, then through college, medical school and into marriage. However, when her husband died in 2008, she realized that she needed to learn more about sailing and grow her confidence behind the wheel. Up until his passing, she had never docked the boat that she had purchased with him, a Sparkman & Stephens-designed Stellar 52, or competed in an offshore sailboat race.

This inspired her to become captain of the boat and learn to manage it, choosing to gain expertise by sailing with other knowledgeable women and keeping the vessel under her ownership. Along the way, she crossed the Atlantic and, in turn, inspired dozens of women to seek out sailing opportunities, hosting all-female crews in offshore races from New England to Bermuda.

Yesterday, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) and the National Women’s Sailing Association (NWSA) honored Dr. Kolker with the BoatUS/NWSA Award that annually recognizes an individual with a record of achievement in inspiring, educating and enriching the lives of women through sailing.

Said NWSA President Debby Grimm, “As Dr. Kolker had done for herself, she has encouraged other women to seek out the skills and experience they need and has

offered other women opportunities to learn by sailing with her and her teams. Many women sought her out to be on her teams or get advice. She has offered encouragement to other women to enter their own boats in challenging races and been an inspirational speaker for a variety of sailing organizations.”

Dr. Kolker’s crews are proud to have won the Faith Paulson Trophy five times, an award to the first-place finisher for all-women crew in the biennial Marion-Bermuda race. She has also offered her medical knowledge on ocean crossings and safety at sea, has been instrumental in developing race strategies and has lectured to teams about safety practices, one of the few women to do so.

A member of Stonington and New York Yacht Clubs, Cruising Club of America, and Offshore Cruising Club, Dr. Kolker has given lectures at NWSA events and is a leader at Safety at Sea programs, preparing crews for unexpected medical events. She is also credited with saving the life of a crew member during a trans-Atlantic passage.

“Somehow men always find it so fascinating that we (women) are so capable, but we are!” said Dr. Kolker. “The best thing about sailing is every time you go sailing you learn something. … ’Confident competence’ is my constant goal. Women are great shipmates with many competencies.”

Pan Roasted Black Florida Grouper Tail with Arugula and Lemon

Ingredients

• 1 (12-to-16-ounce) Florida black grouper fillet (skin and tail attached)

• 2 cups fresh Florida arugula

• 1 teaspoon fresh herbs (parsley and thyme), chopped fine

• 1 teaspoon unsalted butter

• 1 teaspoon Florida seafood seasoning blend

• 1 lemon, juiced

• 2 tablespoons parmesan cheese, grated

• 1 teaspoon olive oil

• Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Preheat a medium oven-safe saute pan over medium-high heat. On a clean cutting board, make several slices into the skin of the fish without going into the meat. Use most of the seasoning blend and fresh herbs to season the side of the fish without the skin. Add the butter to the preheated saute pan, and carefully place the fish skin side up.

Cook the fish for 2 to 3 minutes until a light, crispy crust is formed.

Carefully flip the fish over and put the whole pan into the preheated oven. Let the fish cook for another 5 to 7 minutes or until just cooked throughout. Remove the pan from the oven and let it rest.

In a medium bowl, add arugula, half the lemon juice, olive oil and parmesan cheese. Stir and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Carefully transfer the cooked grouper tail to a large plate. Add the completed arugula salad to the plate with the fish.

Squeeze the remaining lemon juice over the fish and sprinkle any remaining seasoning blend over the entire dish. Serve warm.

Boating in a Thunderstorm: How to Stay Safe in a Storm

As a boater, you’re likely aware of how quickly the weather can change. And there’s a good chance that you enjoy being out on the water in several different conditions.

But what about thunderstorms? How can you protect yourself and your loved ones from intense elements like heavy rain, lightning, and hail while boating? Is it best to race back to shore or take cover where you are? What can you bring with you to help you prepare?

Below, we’ll walk through the answers to these questions and provide our best thunderstorm boating safety tips.

If you see a chance of a storm when you’ll be on the water, we strongly recommend you reconsider your boating plans.

Use your discretion when planning your trip. Traditional weather apps may show an accurate prediction or leave you confused about whether or not you should go out.

Marine weather apps provide a deeper image into forecasts, often showing radar imagery, barometric pressure, wave cap size, and more. Each of these can be used to further determine the likelihood of thunderstorms or other types of severe weather taking place.

Tip #3: Make an Onboard Thunderstorm Boating Safety Plan

Despite your best efforts, you may still end up on the water during a storm someday. Having a plan to protect yourself and your guests when stuck on the water is essential.

To start, consider your nearby shore options. If there’s a landing that’s safe to approach, head there as soon as you can. Getting off the water should always be your primary goal when thunderstorms arise.

• Fire extinguisher

• Visual and sound signaling devices

• Anchor with a line attached

Understanding

the Dangers of Thunderstorms While Boating

Being out on the water in the rain may be uncomfortable, but at the same time, it’s fairly safe. When that rain also includes lighting and thunder, however, things change. Water and lightening are a dangerous combination. It’s more likely for lightning to hit a boat on the water than a spot on land. And that strike can lead to electrocution, fire, and loss of electronics.

Along with lighting, heavy rains lower visibility, and strong winds create intense waves. These combined conditions make water one of the worst places to be during a thunderstorm.

Tip #1: Check the Weather Before Hitting the Water Prevention is often the best plan of action when it comes to thunderstorm boating safety.

If you’re looking for a radio option, tune into the NOAA National Weather Service’s Marine WX Radio.

Tip #2: Learn to Keep a “Watchful Weather Eye” Weather isn’t always predictable. When you fully understand what the beginnings of a thunderstorm look like, you can prepare for the ones that aren’t forecasted.

Typical thunderstorm warning signs include:

• Large, puffy clouds that darken

• Winds that change direction quickly

• Sudden cooling in air temperature

• Lower atmospheric pressure

You should head to shore if you notice any combination of these signs. If you aren’t convinced that a storm will begin, you can stay near a landing while you watch the weather. If conditions improve, head back out. If they worsen, head to dry land.

If you must stay in your boat, the Coast Guard recommends that you:

• Ensure all riders are wearing their life jackets

• Seat guests on the floor in the center of the boat

• Turn on running lights

• Keep bilges empty

• Move toward shore at the minimum speed that allows forward motion

• Hit waves at a 45-degree angle

• Deploy anchor if stopping is necessary.

The National Weather Service also recommends that you:

• Stay inside the boat cabin if available

• Avoid touching metal and electrical devices

Consider creating a thunderstorm safety kit to keep on board, including:

• Life jackets for every rider

• On board first aid kit

• Radio (in case cell phones aren’t accessible)

• Oars or paddles

Once you’ve created your safety plan, ensure all passengers know the steps. You may even want to print a copy of your plan to keep in your glove compartment for a visual reminder. Even kids can be involved in preparation — teach them the signs of thunderstorms and the safest places to be so they’re prepared in the event of an emergency.

Conclusion

We don’t want the fear of thunderstorms to keep you from boating. Nonetheless, it’s important to be prepared for the worst weather conditions every time you hit the water.

Always check the weather before you head out, watch the clouds, winds, and temperature throughout the day, and have a “thunderstorm boating safety plan” ready. Catching Redfish Louisiana Style

Every year we make our way to Louisiana to fish for redfish but not just anywhere we like to do our filming in what I consider the real Louisiana not the commercialized areas that everybody goes to fish we love the Barataria area for its history and culture.

Barataria Bay Louisiana was used in the early 19th century as the base of pirates and smugglers led by the pirate Jean Lafitte. The bay is a notable source of shrimp, as well as muskrat fur, natural gas, and petroleum. Located just outside New Orleans close to the airport and just about a 10-hour drive from Tampa Florida. Their daily bag limit is five (5) redfish per day and twenty-five (25) speckled trout per day this is way Louisianais called a sportsman paradise.

Here is where our adventure starts, on our first trip I was surprised to see nothing but dead shrimp on board thinking the area is

loaded with live shrimp why dead?Our guide said simply put you don’t need any when dead shrimp works great and no hassle trying to keep them alive, they are kept in a cooler sitting on top of ice we used the same leftover shrimp for three days in a row with no problem.

Our Captain of choice each year is Capt. Gage Vincent running a 2400 Pathfinder boat rigged for bayou fishing. Our daily run to Lake Salvador, Rigolets, Bayou DuPont, Three Bayou Bay, Little Lake, and Myrtle Grove takes anywhere from 20 to 35 minutes, and I can tell you from experience its nonstopfishing for six hours. Our average day for the two of us is anywhere from 30 to 50 redfish per trip with some trout, sheepshead, and puppy drum thrown in for fun.

Three ways to catch these redfish.

First: Dead baits using the favorite cork of choice from the guides and locals the 4-Horsemen popping cork, a short leader about 30 inches long with a 3/0 circle hook and one nice big dead shrimp. We simply cast along the grassy shoreline popping the cork making plenty of noise to get the redfish attention, nothing more exciting than watching the cork disappear and your drag singing its tune fish on as she runs for her live.

Artificial Baits (1): Using artificial baits and here is the part I enjoy the most getting the big, beautiful redfish convinced to eat something that is not natural to them, making them think artificial is something they want to eat. It’s not easy and takes patience but the reward is knowing you did

OFFSHORE REPORT

Red snapper season is really the focus offshore right now we’ve had a tough week of weather which has made it difficult to get out there but we’re looking forward to a great weekend and week coming up. As long as were deep enough, we’ve been experiencing plentiful, red snapper. We have to get out there beyond 40 to 50 miles fishing anywhere from around 120 to 140‘ or more. you can catch red snapper inside of this area but generally much more difficult to get good concentrations of decent size fish inside 140 foot. We’re generally utilizing Live Bait or a cut dead bait for those red snapper with around 60 pound leader. You can even fish up to an 80 pound leader especially when we’re deep or closer to 200 foot. The dead baits have been working better for red snapper but we’re still catching plenty on live bait to. Jigs also work really well for red snapper. Bonita strips have really been a hot bait for the red snapper and we carry plenty of Bonita in our shop that you can pick up prior to your trip. For red snapper fish in a private charter on the Flying HUB to a 12 hour extreme trip 39 hour long range overnight trip or a full moon 44 hour full moon. Long range overnight trip is your best bet to target and catch plentiful red snapper.

Red Grouper Fishing is also going pretty well offshore remember red grouper Fishing closes July 21 at 12:01 AM meaning July 20 is your last opportunity to catch and keep red grouper. We’re seeing a lot of those red grouper while fishing for red snapper out deep right now. Red grouper are really liking the live bait unlike the red snapper, which have been more dead bait focused. The red grouper have been hitting on those bigger Pinfish, grunts and squirrel fish and a lizard fish is also a great bait for a keeper red grouper.

Scamp Grouper Fishing is also going well. We’re seeing a lot of scamps as we move deeper to target Red Snapper closer to 160 to 200‘. Scamp Grouper love a small to medium size Pinfish or cut dead bait. We also get a lot of scamp Grouper on those black and gold jigs.

We’re seeing a lot of yellow tail snapper out there offshore right now. The yellow tail snapper bite has been pretty impressive as of late. Mostly caught on live shrimp or cut strips of squid around a quarter inch wide and about 2 inches long to target yellowtail.

Artificial Baits (2): Using the same method as with a dead shrimp but replace the dead shrimp with a Saltwater Assassin under a popping cork.

Tampa Bay: I tried the same method here in the Tampa Bay area using the popping cork and artificials with success but to my surprise the trout went wild on the flats. It also increased my flounder catch or maybe it was luck and the two times I tried it they were just ready to eat.

Tampa Bay Tackle Method: Combo using a 4-Horsemen cork with30-pound fluorocarbon leader length should about 6 inches shorter than the depth of water.The idea is to drift an area popping the cork once wait a few seconds and do it again. Once you get a strike drop your Power Poles and work all around the boat start another drift when the bite quits.

1. 4-Horsemen Float.

2. Combo rig using artificial shrimp.

3. Saltwater Assassin Shrimp Cocktail in Light Beer color.

4. 761M-FG7 ½ foot medium action like Okuma SRT Inshore Elite rod.

5. Helios 3000 Okuma reel.

6. Fins 15-pound Windtamer braided line.

Pelagic wise were seeing a handful of king fish lately and also the occasional blackfin tuna. Most of the time we’re seeing them while trolling or while flatline fission offshore in deeper water.

Tears of Joy - Tania’s Triumphant Catch!

We arrived at the dock’s about 6:30am with some frozen shrimp and squid as we were unable to get any live shrimp. It’s that time of the year when it’s hard to get shrimp. Once we were checked out, I called Fort Pierce City Marina to see if they had any shrimp and we were in luck. We picked up five dozen and started our trek to the boils.

We made it to the boils about 7:30am. The water was nice but not as clean as I had hoped. With an outgoing tide the water was a bit murky. With the SW wind and the outgoing tide, we drifted southeast. We made our first drift about the middle of the boils with no bites. I repositioned the boat to the west end of the boils and we started to drift in a circle because of the water currents, but this drift proved fruitful. We ended up catching about 10-15 ladyfish, a few blue runners, a small mutton snapper and a baby black margate. Tania even lost a decent sized ladyfish to a shark. She couldn’t believe how hard it was pulling until we got just the head back. Although none of the fish we caught we caught went into the cooler, the tug on the line put smiles on our faces.

We made it to the reefs about 9:00am. We started off by jigging since there were already several boats in the area drifting the reefs. The first drift we had a few bites but nothing committed. I also changed up from the 30g jigs we used at the boils to 60g jigs as we were a bit deeper. This proved to be the ticket as the first drift after we changed up, we caught three fish, although all three fish were just grunts. After this drift a boat came up and decided to anchor on our drift path so we changed it up and anchored also.

While anchored Tania and I had a few bites but nothing was landed. Tania had two big fish on and lost both. One she told me she was stuck on the bottom and as I watched the line, I saw it moving and I put some tension on the line and her fish woke up. I handed her rod back to her and

Two days, three trips June 14-15, 2023

On Wednesday I had two trips. My morning trip was with Gustavo from New Jersey originally from Argentina. Gustavo has been fly fishing for a while but never in salt water so today was his first salt water fishing trip ever. He didn’t really know what he wanted to catch on fly as he just wanted to check things out. Well, this time of year the best bet on fly is bonefish so we gave it a shot. I have to tell you, we worked but after a while Gustavo got a take but missed it. Hmmm. Ok. A bit later he got another take and this time and converted and landed his first saltwater fish, a bonefish on fly. Are you kidding me? Towards the end of the trip he added another one quite a bit bigger. Some guys have all the luck. Wait, isn’t that a song?

I knew we would lose as I was sure it was a big grouper and we didn’t have the tackle to pull up a big grouper. About 5 minutes into the fight, it finally broke Tania off. It’s fun to fight a big fish, however they really wear you out.

At this point Tania was growing frustrated with the lack of action and asked to go back to the boils. We pulled up anchor and made the run back. The tide had changed to an incoming tide and it cleared the water up. Tania and I were hopeful this would mean we would catch a permit. Since we had 40g jigs on already we just kept them on and on our first drop both Tania and I hooked up. Tania brought up a blue runner and I had one of the biggest pork fish I had ever seen. Unfortunately, the bite died off after those two fish were caught. We had to head back to the dock about 11:30am in order to be back to the dock by 1:00pm. At 11:12am I looked at Tania and said we tried to but it didn’t look like God would bless us with the permit today. Tania suggested one last drift by the buoy before we called it a day. I agreed and as we made our way to set up for the drift, we both said a prayer!

About 11:20am I got a massive hit and my drag was screaming. As I was walking around the boat, I had to pass Tania. She was bringing her line in, however I needed to pass her so she lifted her rod for me to go under. As I was under her rod, she slapped me in the back of the head with her rod! She got a massive hit and at that moment I realized we both had fish on. I was pretty sure with how the fish were fighting we had permit on. A few minutes into the fight for me, my fish pretty much stopped pulling so I kept tension on my line and told Tania to get her fish to the boat. Tania and I danced past each

to two channels, one was fun and the other was dead so off to the flats for sharks and they each caught sharks. In the end Phillip mentioned everyone caught sharks and had a blast. Awesome!

I put my rod in the holder and netted her fish. Once the fish was onboard, Tania started to cry as she was saying “I finally did it, I finally landed a permit”. Since I still had my fish on the line, I dropped the net and started to fight my fish. I got to the other side of the boat, and I looked at Tania and told her she needed to stop crying and she needed to hold my rod while I dealt with her fish. She refused at first, until I told her she either needed to take the permit out of the net or hold my rod. Everyone who knows Tania, knows she is afraid of the fish while they are alive so she finally took my rod. I took her permit tossed it in the cooler and then proceeded to swap Tania the net for my rod.

My permit made a few more hard runs but it didn’t take too long for me to have it at the boat. Tania did a great job netting my fish. At this point I was finally able to relax and take in what just happened. It was a lot to process at the time but we were successful in landing both fish. I marked my fish with an X on its forehead so we could tell the difference as Tania wanted to know who’s was bigger, I love her competitive nature!

Once we had everything settled it was just past 11:30am, so we had to head back to the dock. The drive back to the dock was interesting as Tania and I were still in the moment of catching two permits at the same time. Even though it was a slow day fishing, we were blessed with two great fish to bring home for supper. I gave a fillet to a family at the dock and I gave another to our neighbor. The other two I kept for myself as I love permit.

The afternoon I fished with Maya, Jay and Lucas, the first of two trips to accommodate a family of 6. I took them to a shallow wreck where they caught their first saltwater fish, snappers, chubs and blue runners. Once the hot action slowed I took them to the flats for some shark fishing and they each caught sharks and Lucas caught a stingray which was a thrill for him. Cool!

I was down at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo today for a fun dad-son “tournament” as these dads were celebrating their sons graduation from Middle School. I had Dave and his 14 year old son Hunter aboard and they told me to not stress out as they wanted to relax and have a good time. So, we did but we did go bonefishing. To keep it light I decided to chum for bonefish as opposed to the ardous and intense sight fishing for them. They definitely relaxed and Hunter got his first bonefish plus we missed another bite or two. To keep this going Hunter also released 4 nice sized bonnet head sharks. Very cool and they also got to score points for their “tournament”.

Back at “The Reef” June 20, 2023 Happy Father’s Day everyone! I was able to take Father’s Day off because my Sunday charter rescheduled due to weather. I was back yesterday with long time client Kevin and his friend Bart but we got run off the water by storms after losing two bonefish on fly. Today was a different day as I worked an afternoon trip out of the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo again.

The weather today was perfect so I was pretty excited. Justin and Steve were part of a corporate group having an event on site and a half day fishing was part of the event. They could care less what they wanted to catch so I suggested bonefishing, how can I not? Once we got on the flats we got into some bonefish pretty quickly and regularly using spinning tackle and live shrimp with the total tally being three bonefish, two for Steve and one for Justin. Good work guys!

She Killed it! June 21, 2023

Maria, she’s awesome and she brought her super cool friend Joe along for a full day of fishing the flats on fly and spin. Maria had the fly rod and Joe had the spinning rod and we were targeting bonefish. Well, we had a great time and using shrimp Joe hooked and landed 4 bonefish on her first time bonefishing. Wow! Maria armed with the fly rod was really happy for Joe and as the weather started to get a bit sketchy it finally happened for Maria. Cast, strip, strip, strip, “I’m on!”... I love that! The bonefish got her into the backing 4 times before the solid 8 pounder came to the side of the boat for a release. Well, Maria was done and Joe was cool with it so we headed in early to avoid the coming weather and end on a high note.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. We understand BUSY. The Banana River Sail and Power Squadron teaches a large number of classes. They are regularly scheduled throughout the year. Sometimes your schedule and our schedule do not match. Rather than have you miss a class offering we will schedule and teach any of the classes listed below whenever five (5) or more students make a request for a class. VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS AND SAFE BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any

enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutuallyconvenient time. BOAT AMERICA CLASSES – CLEARWATER, FLORIDA COAST GUARD AUXILIARY2023 - The Coast Guard urges recreational boaters, paddlers, anglers, and others to remain safe on the water by taking a Safe Boating Course. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other lifesaving lessons. A boating safety course will teach the basic skills to operate a vessel safely. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. To continue offering these classes safely for the students and instructors, they are being offered on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. Because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom –the students can be anywhere in Florida! It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license.
