ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Thinking of donating your boat? If you’re looking to get a break on next year’s tax bill by donating your boat this year, you may not want to wait too long. That’s because the Internal Revenue Service bases the value of the charitable deduction on the actual selling price of the donated boat. Selling now, at peak season of demand, could potentially mean a greater benefit for the former boat owner.

“Donating your boat now aligns a charity’s interests with your own – they get the most value from the donation to run programs or operations, and more you stand to gain in tax benefits in the form of a tax deduction,” said BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water Boat Donation Program manager Ted Sensenbrenner. “More boats are sold now than at any time of year. If you wait to donate in late fall, it is less of a seller’s market. Additionally, if the boat doesn’t get sold until 2024, you delay any potential tax benefit.”

The BoatUS Foundation’s Boat Donation Program, unlike other charities that accept boats, may offer additional benefits to those looking to donate as it actively uses some donated boats for training purposes. In some cases, donated vessels − typically single engine center-console types − are needed for Foundation On-Water Training programs. With these boats, the donor may use the surveyed value at the time of donation for tax purposes, and the write-off may be taken immediately.

For boats donated but to be sold, the Foundation’s program uses a partner broker to advertise the boat to help realize its highest value. The nonprofit also ensures that the donation process is hassle-free, from picking up the boat to handling the paperwork.

Florida Spinach Stuffed Flounder Roulade

Ingredients

3, (6-ounce) Florida Flounder fillets

3 cups Florida spinach

1 cup Panko bread crumbs (reserve 2 tablespoons)

1 lemon, thinly sliced

1 lemon, juiced

½ cup Parmesan cheese

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1 tablespoon olive oil, for cooking

Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Preparation:

Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. Thinly slice a lemon and place in the bottom of an oiled oven-proof dish and set aside.

Pre-heat a sauté pan and add the olive oil. Sauté spinach for 2 minutes (until wilted) and season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat and add the lemon juice, bread crumbs, and Parmesan cheese. Mix to combine. Season both sides of the flounder and spread an even amount of the spinach mixture on each fillet. Carefully roll fillet and place on top of the lemon slices in the prepared dish. Season with salt, pepper, melted butter and top with the remaining bread crumbs. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until cooked thoroughly. Remove from oven and sprinkle with lemon juice.

Mercury Marine recognized by American Foundry Society with 2023 Plant Engineering Award

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (May 26, 2023) — Mercury Marine, a division of Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC), has been recognized by the American Foundry Society (AFS) with the 2023 Plant Engineering Award for its implementation of Industry 4.0 data collection technologies and data analytics at its aluminum castings facility at the company’s world headquarters in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.

The AFS Plant Engineering Award recognizes plants’ engineering achievements in planning, installation, operation and maintenance and automation of foundry equipment. Mercury Castings produces die cast and lost foam parts include engine blocks, heads, housings, gearcases, aluminum propellers, and other aluminum castings for the marine industry and its external sales business unit.

Boat Misfueling: How to Avoid Misfueling Dangers

Did you know that ethanol and misfueling are some of the top concerns among boaters?

If a boater fuels up with higher ethanol blends — such as E15 — it puts both themselves and their engines at risk. (Think: expensive damage or complete engine failure.)

Are you wondering how to avoid misfueling dangers? In this guide, we’re explaining everything you need to know about safe fueling practices.

Keep reading to discover common misfueling errors and what happens when you accidentally misfuel a boat.

What Is Misfueling?

Simply put, boaters can’t assume that every fuel sold at gas stations is compatible with marine engines. In fact, boats can only run on fuel with 10% or less ethanol (aka E10 fuel). And many boaters prefer to use ethanol-free fuel (E0) whenever possible.

Unfortunately, federal ethanol fuel mandates have made it difficult for boaters to find E0 fuel. And with more E15 (aka gasoline with 15% ethanol) being funneled into the fuel supply, the threat of accidentally misfueling is growing.

Common Misfueling Errors

As we mentioned, the federal ethanol mandates (also known as RFS) required increasing amounts of biofuels to be blended into the fuel supply each year. And that growing mandate forces higher quantities of E15 into the marketplace, often at the expense

of ethanol-free fuel.

Fuels containing more than 10% ethanol are illegal to use in marine engines, motorcycles, outdoor power equipment, and cars model year 2000 and older.

However, common misfueling errors occur when boaters accidentally — or unknowingly — fill their tanks with E15.

An estimated 95% of boats are refilled at gas stations. However, a Harris Poll found that over three in five Americans assume that any gas sold at fueling stations is safe for all cars and other non-road engine products, like boats and mowers.

The same poll revealed that roughly twothirds of Americans believe higher ethanol blends of gas (aka E15) are safe to use in any engine. And only 25% of Americans notice the ethanol content at the pump. Instead, 69% of Americans choose the least expensive fuel whenever possible.

In addition, roughly one-third of Americans place their equipment into long-term storage without draining the leftover fuel first. It’s also a bad idea to use fuel that is over 30 days old or to store gasoline in an unsafe container.

What Happens If a Boat is Misfueled?

So, what happens if a boat is misfueled? Well, research shows that the price of accidentally misfueling a boat includes the following:

• Stalling

• Corrosion

• Fuel leaks

• Damaged valves

In most cases, your insurance won’t cover the repair expenses for misfueling. However, you should check your policy to be sure.

How

do you get rid of bad gas in a boat?

If you accidentally misfuel your boat, you can use a suction pump to drain bad gas from the gas tank. (For larger boats, we recommend using a motorized suction pump.) Store the bad fuel in a sealed bucket or container and continue until the fuel tank is empty.

Next, disconnect the fuel lines and spray fuel tank cleaner into the tank. (This prevents any new fuel from becoming contaminated.) Then, rinse the tank out with water. When finished, use the suction cup to drain the dirty water from the fuel tank.

There’s only one game fish on the planet that can interrupt the lives of every shallow water angler across the United States of America at the drop of a hat. Its annual migration causes anglers to reschedule meetings, put off weddings, and even plan childbirths around its arrival. Obsessed anglers often put their professional lives on hold, before kissing their families goodbye for the season all in hopes of doing battle with the “Silver King” of the flats, aka the Tarpon!!!!!!

Tarpon are the largest species of fish targeted by fishermen in shallow water and are widely known as one of the BIG THREE species of the flats (permit, tarpon and bonefish). The shear fact that a fish measuring in at over 7ft long and weighing over 200lbs could swim in chest deep water is incredible to think about which is why anglers from all over the country flock to Florida each year to do battle with such a large fish.

Slurp! Slurp! Slurp! As the sun slowly rises and as darkness turns to light anglers begin to hear that unmistakable slurping sound of rolling Tarpon as it seemingly echoes for miles. Once an angler becomes in tuned with the sound of rolling Tarpon it’s remarkable to see the laser focus that ensues. All of life’s problems just seem to go away with each sound of a rolling fish. For

every Slurp! An angler is sure to take a deep breath. It’s almost like becoming one with the Tarpon.

Before you know it there are fish at 10 o’clock. The guide swings the bow of the boat into position and the angler starts making the cast. It’s an artistic act that plays out over and over during the season that runs from April-July. As the fly enters the water and anticipation runs through your veins you can’t help but think there’s no other place on the planet that you would rather be than on that flat, in that moment, on that day!!

Tarpon will still be a good option this month.

Shallow water action for reds and big trout will be best early and late in the day. Some of the best action will be with trout, blues, pompano and more on deep grass flats. Catch and release snook fishing in the ICW at night or in the surf should also be good options.

Tarpon fishing should be good in the coastal gulf this month. Large schools of tarpon will dwindle in size and numbers to singles, doubles and small schools of post spawn fish during July. I usually find tarpon to be aggressive in July, with spawning completed and after a long migration, they usually feed aggressively. I also find them to be more curious this time of the year often swinging closer to check out the sound of a landing bait, lure or fly. Spin anglers will do best by setting up in travel lanes and drifting live baits under floats while staying ready to sight cast to fish that may pop up with no notice. The DOA Baitbuster is my “go to” lure for tarpon. The DOA Swimming Mullet, 4” Shrimp and CAL 4” swim bait are also good choices depending on the situation.

This is my favorite time to fly fish for tarpon. The tactics are the same as earlier in the season, anchoring or staking out on travel routes, although fish are in a better mood. Unlike the large tarpon schools that we see around full and new moon phases in June, July fish are usually aggressive. Large schools of tarpon are impressive, but if you spook the lead fish you will spook all of them. Tarpon will thin out towards the end of the month as they begin to move to inside waters of Sarasota Bay, Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor. They move into these areas to rest and feed following spawning. They can be targeted in these areas with flies, a variety of DOA lures or live bait. Also look for tarpon feeding in schools of “breaking” ladyfish in these areas.

Regulations have returned to normal for reds and snook in Sarasota. Spotted Seatrout have changed in southwest Florida to a 3 fish per person, bag limit and a 6 fish boat limit. Trout must be from 15”-19” with one allowed per vessel over 19”. In my opinion it’s important to protect larger trout, which are usually female breeders. Catch and release snook fishing will be a good option this month. With very warm water this time of year, it is important to use tackle heavy enough to land them quickly. Spin anglers should do well fishing lighted docks and bridges in the ICW with CAL jigs with shad tails or jerk worms or DOA shrimp. Fly anglers should do well with clear intermediate sink tip lines and wide profile flies, such as Lefty’s Deceiver or EP flies, since larger baitfish may be more predominant. Docks and bridges close to passes should be the best ones. You’ll also find snook in the surf, where you can walk along the beach and sight cast to them in shallow water. Gibby’s DT Variation is a “go to” fly for many snook surf anglers.

You’ll find reds very active in shallow water this month. With plentiful baitfish and higher tides, they’ll spend more time feeding over shallow grass flats. Look for them along the edges of bars or in potholes when the tide is low or along mangrove shorelines and around oyster bars when the tide is high. You’ll also find big trout in many of the same areas where you find reds, but the bite for big trout is usually best early or late in the day.

Surface walking top water plugs or fly poppers and Gurglers may draw some big explosions! Casting CAL jigs with shad tails or jerk worms ahead of your boat is a good way to locate reds.

flies tied on long shank hooks on sink tip fly lines to find trout. A drift anchor will slow your drift to a more manageable speed if it’s windy. Look for birds or baitfish on the surface to find fish. You may find Spanish mackerel, blues, pompano and more mixed with trout on deep grass flats. Flats close to passes or on points that get good tidal flow are usually productive. In addition to tarpon, you might find false albacore (little tunny), tripletail or cobia in the coastal gulf this month. Look for albies feeding on the surface. I have seen large schools of albies “blitz” the beach while tarpon fishing this time of year. They are usually feeding on larger baits, such as threadfins or pilchards, so flies and lures should be sized accordingly. You might even find cobia swimming with tarpon or cruising bars in shallow water along the beach. You can use your tarpon fly or spin tackle for cobia, but a medium spinning outfit or an 8 to 9-weight fly rod will be better suited for mackerel and albies. I also occasionally run into tripletail this time of year, either around a crab trap buoy, navigational marker or floating debris.

There are lots of options this month, late season tarpon, snook in the surf or at night or fishing skinny water for reds or big trout. Tarpon fishing is best when sweat is pouring down your back, but you’ll want to fish early in the day in shallow water. Our natural resources are under constant pressure from red tides fueled by industrial, agricultural and residential runoff, toxic spills and discharges, freezes, increasing fishing pressure and habitat loss and degradation, please limit your kill, don’t kill your limit!

A Slow Day at The Boils With Tania!

Tania and I made it offshore for the third week in a row. We had trouble finding shrimp so we grabbed some frozen shrimp and we made it to the dock about 6:30am. Once the boat was loaded, we radioed the marina to see if they had shrimp. Fortunately for us they did and we grabbed four dozen. After we grabbed the shrimp, we started heading for the inlet; however, we had one stop left before we made our way offshore. We had to stop at War Daddy’s bait boat to pick up some pilchards.

Once we got our pilchards we headed to the boils. We were hopeful to land another permit today as we have seen reports of them being caught throughout the week, we got to the boils about 7:30am and as the sun drew higher in the sky, we could tell the water was dirty.

When we arrived, there was one other boat fishing near the buoy so we started drifting about midway between shore and the buoy. I ended up catching the first fish, which is usually a curse for the boat. Shortly after Tania caught a porkfish to match the first fish. The bite was slow today but with the storms coming early afternoon we didn’t want to run out to the reefs as we were fearful of getting caught in the storm.

With the SW wind we were drifting mostly west so our next drift we moved close to shore. While we were drifting one of the guides had a double hook up. Since the bite was slow Tania and I watched them bring in the fish. They ended up landing two permit! Tania and I were excited to see permit, and we were hopeful we could catch one or two.

We ended up catching porkfish, blue runners, lane snapper, mutton snapper, a ladyfish, a sonnet, and a shark. Tania also lost a large spinner shark after a five-minute fight. She lost the shark when it jumped right next to the boat that caught the permit. When the shark jumped it got all their attention. About 11:00am the storm started to brew. There was thunder and lightning off in the distance and from the radar it was going to past us to the south so Tania and I kept working the boils. About 11:30am the wind really kicked up so Tania and I decided it would be best if we start heading in.

Instead of just making the run back in we decided to start off by trolling silver spoons. It didn’t take long and Tania had a fish on. She landed a baby bonita. We had never seen a bonita so small before. We ended up trolling another 30 minutes without another bite so

targeting snook and tarpon. Jacks, mackerel, snapper, sharks, triple tail just to name a few. Live baits and jigs will get the rod bent for anglers and a mixed bag of species is always a plus.

we pulled in our baits and headed in. As we came into the inlet, we saw a large group of people on the beach at the state park. Tania thought someone was having a wedding, but when we got closer, we realized it was a group of people getting baptized! It was great witnessing this in public.

We made it back to the dock about noon and since we didn’t have any fish in the cooler it didn’t take long to get off the boat and load the car. We ran to the library to pick up a book Tania had reserved and when we came out the taco vendor from the Saturday market was still open so Tania and I went and got lunch and followed it up with gelato from Uncle Carl’s. It was our consolation prize for having a slow day on the water.

All in all, we had a good day on the water. It wasn’t a great day on the water but not every trip can’t be. It’s days like this one that really help Tania and I appreciate the good ones we have. Tania and I pray all who made it out had a blessed and safe trip. And all who are going out this week have tight lines and good times!

July has arrived summer is in full swing. Drags are screaming and anglers are smiling

Snook are biting in the ICW, inlets and along the beaches. Live baits and DOA C.A.L. 3” shad tail have been the baits to get the strike. Both sides of the tides get the fish active, the snook are spawning so the bigger fis must be handled with care.

Tarpon action is red hot beaches, inlets and the back country all areas to find the silver king. Live baits and DOA terror eyz have have been the best baits to get the tarpon excited. The tarpon are ranging in size from 10 to 100 pounds.

A mixed bag of species are being caught while

The tarpon bite has been fantastic the past week. inlets, beaches and deep channels in the intercoastal have provided nonstop action for anglers. Live bait’s free lined with the tide will get the drags screaming. Tarpon have been hanging in schools. The tarpon have been averaging in size from 10 to 90 pounds.

The snook fishing has been great, with all the rain we’ve had spillways have been open and the snook have started to gather. Spillways and channels where water flow is swift, snook will be lurking. Live bait and Rapala top water plugs will get the bite.

Other mixture of species have included, Tripletail, blue fish, mackerel, snapper, jacks, ladyfish, shark, and many other species that keep the rod

bent. Anglers love the nonstop action, making the day, abundant with fish and happy faces.

Well, that is a fishing report for the past week, hope you all enjoyed. Remember, you can’t catch them from the couch, so get out there and get hooked up. Tight lines!

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check

is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary,

confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination.

The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. After successful inspection you are awarded a vessel safety check sticker which is affixed to your vessel near your state registration sticker. AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. 2023 - The Coast Guard urges recreational boaters, paddlers, anglers, and others to remain safe on the water by taking a Safe Boating Course. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other lifesaving lessons. A boating safety course will teach the basic skills to operate a vessel safely. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. To continue offering these classes safely for the students and instructors, they are being offered on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. Because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida!
