Capt. Daimin Barth Strikes Out on His Own as New Owner of TowBoatUS Carrabelle/St. Marks

CARRABELLE, Fla., July 13, 2023 – Five years ago, when Capt. Daimin Barth began as a part-time captain for a TowBoatUS company on Florida’s Gulf Coast, “I always knew that I wanted to do my own thing,” says the 36-year-old and former auto mechanic. After helping to manage the port’s growth and a near tripling of the volume of on-water response cases, the desire to become an owner only grew. Now, Capt. Barth has realized his dream and is the new owner of TowBoatUS Carrabelle and TowBoatUS St. Marks, Florida. It hasn’t been easy. Barth had his sights on some TowBoatUS locations, but each time unsurmountable challenges to a sale popped up. He persevered and is now excited about his ownership role at Carrabelle and St. Marks. “I couldn’t ask for better locations, and I’m so happy to have this opportunity assisting Panhandle boaters and anglers,” says Barth, whose wife, Amber Zigadlo, joins him managing the company’s business operations and dispatching.

Just two years ago, Barth was honored with a TowBoatUS Meritorious Service Award for his singlehanded good Samaritan rescue of a swimmer who was being swept out to sea – all the while he was still operating under tow of a disabled vessel.

The Fi25 comes with as many as seven precisely placed ballast locations that, when combined, create 5600-pounds of ballast. But large ballast capacity isn’t the complete story. We do ballast a little differently by distributing it evenly throughout the boat. This even distribution displaces weight along the entire running surface of this 25-foot performance machine, resulting in a longer wave and a balanced running attitude, front to back, with virtually no bow rise to distract the driver. We love the fact that Centurion offers more than 50% better fuel efficiency than any other water sports boat in the game today. Centurion’s Opti-V may be a modified deep-v hull designed to maximize displacement, but the running surface has a lot of lift built into it. This eliminates drag and creates balance for less resistance. We have a nickname for

the available RAMFILL² ballast system. We call it the “Baller.” It’s a nearly maintenance free system that offers 2800 pounds – plus of ballast capacity that fills in 90 seconds. With its four stainless steel two-inch valves (two in two out) bolted through to the flanges, anything plastic is eliminated. In our Centurion 2024 Fi Series models the standard PANO Side by Side (SxS) HD Touch Vision Dash System by Enovation has two 12” x 4” panoramic screens mounted side by side. They function as one large screen or two independent screens, enabling the driver to see and control every system at once. CLEARWATER, FL (July 11, 2023) – Heather Wiczek, MarineMax Nisswa Operations Manager, was recently named to Boating Industry’s 2023 Women Making Waves in their June issue. Heather stood out among more than 100 well-qualified nominations submitted for the annual program, which recognizes women in the recreational boating industry who contribute to its success, propel its growth and lead their organizations and peers into the future.

“I am honored to be nominated and awarded this recognition. It has been an amazing journey getting to work in this industry for so long and getting to help build our dealership and industry to what it is today. It was inspiring to read all the other women’s stories to see how they have positively impacted our industry as well.” says Heather.

As Operations Manager, Heather handles the day-today work within MarineMax Nisswa. She is constantly looking for more efficient ways to handle tasks at hand for her store to ensure everything runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible. She keeps a positive attitude to help instill an optimistic attitude and ensures team members know they can come to her with any questions or suggestions. Heather, as well as making sure everything is running smoothly for her team members, is also very attentive to all customers that

It will be Heather’s 25th year in the industry come 2024. When Nisswa opened, she started by picking up and delivering storage boats with her husband and his best friend. She worked her way up to doing payables and AR and, eventually, with a lot of support from the accounting department, doing all the books for Nisswa. She filled in where needed when they didn’t have adequate staff while doing all the books. She has worked in parts, warranty, business office, and as a service manager. She has pretty much touched every aspect of the business. She has seen it flourish into the successful store it is now. Heather knows Nisswa like the back of her hand and has been dedicated to making the dealership that people want to do business with. Crabbing Off a Boat: 4 Tips for Beginners

Are you thinking about going crabbing this summer? If not, you’ll want to start, as there’s nothing tastier than eating your freshly caught crabs with a side of drawn butter.

Of course, catching these crustaceans is both an art and a science. In this post, we’re revealing everything you need to know about crabbing off a boat! Keep reading to discover what to bring, safety tips, and where to go crabbing this summer.

4 Crabbing Tips for Beginners

Ready to embark on your crabbing adventure but still trying to figure out where to start? Check out these four crabbing tips for beginners:

1. Know Your Territory

Different types of crabs are found in different geographical areas. Therefore, the type of crab you catch will depend on where you toss your pots:

• Blue Crab: Florida, Delaware, Maryland,

Eastern Virginia

• Blue King Crab: Alaska

• Box Crab: Washington

• Dungeness Crab: Washington, Oregon, CA

• Golden King Crab: Alaska

• Jonah Crab: Maine, Rhode Island, MA

Before boarding your crab boat, familiarize yourself with the local crabbing rules and regulations. That information impacts the type of crabbing equipment you can use and the size of crabs you can catch.

2. Bring the Right Equipment

Before embarking on your crabbing trip, you must invest in the right equipment. Here’s a brief overview of what you’ll need:

• Trap

• Pull line

• Float

• Bait bag and bag tiedown

• Bushel or basket

• Caliper

• Bait

Additionally, some crabbers will want to invest in the following:

• Bushel basket topper: This allows you to fill the bushel when measuring the legal takehome limit.

• Turtle excluder: This ensures you don’t accidentally snag some turtles in your catch.

• Trap with 1+ escape rings: These are designed to let young crabs (that are illegal to catch) escape.

• Crab net and crab box: To hold crabs in the water until they’re ready for transport.

• Weights: Add to your trap to ensure the current doesn’t take it.

3. Rigging Your Trap

How you rig your crab trap will make or break your crabbing experience. For optimal results, choose a sturdy pull line designed for saltwater

that can hold the weight of your trap, bait, and potential crabs. (We recommend using a leaded line.)

Then, ensure your rope is long enough for the depth of your crabbing location. If your rope floats — meaning the trap isn’t heavy enough — you’ll want to arm it with weights.

Most places require tying a brightly colored float to the end of your rope. This helps you — and other boaters — spot it in the water. Don’t forget to label it with your name and contact info.

Then, secure a bait bag inside the trap. If you want to catch more crabs, consider placing the bait bag inside a bait box, as this slows the eating process. And if you plan on leaving your trap for longer than a day or two, we recommend weighing it down so that the current doesn’t drag it away.

4. Making the Catch

Finally, it’s time to haul your catch! We recommend investing in an electric or hydraulic puller to conserve energy and avoid overstraining yourself. Then, you’ll need to weigh your crabs individually and sort them. (You can only keep crabs that are above the legal weight). Toss any crabs that are below the legal weight, as well as pregnant females. Place the crabs in your holder, basket, or bushel, and secure them with a lid. If not, expect a fine from Fish, Game, and Wildlife.

Either count or weigh your crabs and record the amount, as you can’t exceed the legal limit. Next, you’ll need to preserve your catch until you return to shore. Fill a cooler with ice and place the crabs on top to keep them alive in transit. The ice will slow their metabolism and keep the crabs alive until you arrive at your destination.

For longer transit, place your crabs directly on the bottom of an empty cooler. Soak a towel with water from their natural habitat and put it on top. Then, cover the towel with ice. Make sure to keep replenishing the water, as this continually supplies the crabs with oxygen.

Pro Tip: Keep the crabs away from wind or sun – both are harmful to them.

In a small sauce pan, melt butter and sauté the onion over medium heat until soft. Add marmalade, teriyaki sauce, orange juice, ginger, curry powder and diced habaneras; heat through. Set aside and keep warm.

Coat tuna steaks with cracked pepper. Heat olive oil in sauté pan over medium high heat; sear tuna to desired doneness, turning once. Cook for 2 minutes on each side for rare center; 3 to 5 minutes each side for medium center; 5 to 8 minutes each side for well-done center. Spoon the orange teriyaki sauce over steaks in the pan to glaze or spoon sauce onto plate and place tuna on top. Garnish with orange slices.

My Biggest Catch

The future of fishing lays on the shoulders of the younger generation, which we hope sometime in their future they can become great anglers and boaters. Not every child can be athletic, but every child can be an angler with just a little help and guidance.

Last year I was able to start a Kids Fishing Clinic out of Picnic Island Park with the help of many of my local sponsors and the support of Mayor Jane Castor, which helped us get started. This year with the support once again from the Mayor and the RISE Foundation we were able to make it better and bigger. We helped over 150 kids to learn how to fish. Each child received a rod n reel, tackle tray with tackle to help them get started. First, we had 15 volunteer captains who donated their time, 14 police volunteers, CCA, FWC, Police Dive team and some parents and of course 158 kids.

Our goal was to get the kids involved with the great outdoors this area has to off and hopefully make a bond with one of their parents something both could do together and have some memorable time. Thanks to the Mayor the Police helicopter did a fly over showing support and a hour later the Tampa Fire boat put on a show for the kids.

Here is how it all came down 158 kids learned how to fish from some of the best captains in the area. CCA (Coastal Conservation Association) taught them about conservation and their program for scholarships,

August Fishing Report: August could be a hit or miss month, it depends on the amount of rain and temperatures, the name Dog days Summer has its largest impact this month. I like to fish under bridges for mangrove snook, black drum and over slot redfish. First, it’s cool under the bridges and second a great gathering place for the big boys. The water temp seems to be just a few degrees cooler due to the current flow second the bridge pillars hold an abundance of food the only problem other species also like the area so yes you are going to have to put up with some trash fish but on the long run its worth it.

Tackle: If you are looking to catch the big ones, you need a large spinning like OKUMA Azores

8000reel and 40-80-pound rod unless you are in into conventional reel outfits. Depending on the tide movement you will need anywhere for 1/2oz to 1oz lead 65-pound test braided line it cuts through the water better that means less weight is needed 50-pound fluorocarbon leader at least 36 inches long tied to a 3/0 circle hook. I personally prefer using a jig head with a 3/0 hook.

Baits:Live blue crabs medium size cut in half best deal; fresh dead will work in most cases frozen fall apart too easy to me it’s a waste of money it pays to pay a little more but well worth the added expense. Black drums can be seen on your sonar so don’t waste time just drive around the pillars until the sonar turns dark due to the fact, they are big and in large numbers.

The big redfish consider fresh blue crabs as their go to candy and if there any are around which they hang in with the black drum you could be in for a surprise.

Best spots in Tampa Bay: Gandy Bridge, Howard Frankland, and the big Courtney Campbell Causeway bridge just to name a few. Skyway bridge also has them with some leftover tarpon.

INSHORE FISHING REPORT

We’ve been seeing a lot of snook around the pass, especially at night and early morning.

Once daylight sets in, snook are more active on the beach and in the back bay area compared to the passes. However, during the day, we are seeing a few snook hanging around underneath the docks in the pass. Generally, on the beach, lighter tackle with minimal weight and small hooks is a good idea. We’ve been having a lot of success targeting snook with pinfish, pigfish, and live shrimp. In the pass, live pinfish is a good idea, or a large live shrimp if you can find one. The water has been super clear around high tide and getting warmer, so the outgoing tide allows for a bit heavier tackle, but the super clear incoming tides require lighter tackle and a more stealthy approach.

Snapper, especially mangrove snapper, have been super active around virtually any structure in our back bay area lately, from docks to piers to bridges and everything in between. Any hard growth will have a lot of mangrove snapper around it. We’ve also been seeing a lot of sheepshead. Smaller chunks of live shrimp and cut whitebait are great options for the prolific and aggressive mangrove snapper. A little bit of chum will get them super active, clouded, and concentrated.

There are still a few tarpon around, but it’s important to handle them quickly and ensure their survival. Recently, we found two dead tarpon floating through the pass that seemed to have been caught and released. They were too tired and unfortunately died. So make sure to handle tarpon quickly, unhook them, revive them well, and let them live to fight another day. There aren’t a ton of tarpon around, but we’ve seen quite a few move

through the pass.

Redfish action has been going well in the back bay area around the mangrove shorelines, grass flats, boyster bars, and other back bay structures that attract bait. Redfish are most active in the early morning and late afternoon when the shadows get longer and the fish have a reprieve from the heat. Soft plastics are a great idea for targeting redfish, but you have to remember that the fish are super lethargic and moving slowly. Cut bait works well for redfish too.

Black drum have been active around the back bay bridges. The Terra Verde bridge is the closest one to us that I would recommend trying to fish for big black drum. We also see quite a few around the deck Meisner bridge, and those with boats often target the Gandy bridge with success. Black drum love large crustaceans hanging out on the bottom, whether it’s a big shrimp or a crab.

NEARSHORE FISHING REPORT

Mahi-mahi have been more common nearshore as we approach the hotter part of the summer. We’ve seen mahi as shallow as 40 feet of water on our five-hour half days, but they are more common beyond about 60 feet of water or more. The 10hour all-day trips have seen quite a few as well, and even nearshore private charters have been catching them. Once offshore, they become even more common. It’s a great time of year to have your tackle ready and fish with a flatline, as you never know what might swing by.

Lane snapper have been pretty active nearshore as well. We’re seeing a lot of them around 60 to 80 feet of water and beyond. Lanes are most active on squid, but we’re

seeing them taking shrimp and cut bait too.

Mangrove snapper are somewhat common nearshore. We’ve seen quite a few as we go deeper nearshore. However, the average size of mangrove snapper has gone down quite a bit due to a huge influx of juvenile mangrove snapper nearshore and offshore. We’re even seeing undersized mangrove snapper in waters as deep as 150 feet offshore. This is a great sign for the future of the fishery, although it can be frustrating to catch smaller mangrove snapper in deep waters. Nonetheless, we’re seeing mangrove snapper throughout the entire region, from nearshore to offshore.

Hogfish are pretty few and far between this time of year. Once the water gets warm, they spread out and become lethargic. Most of the time, you’ll only find hogfish at the dock because someone made a commercial spearfishing trip and is selling them down at Dons Dock at our new seafood market. We have caught a few on hook and line during our trips, but they are super hard to target and very scarce this time of year.

Red grouper action nearshore is pretty tough. When we fish a little deeper nearshore, we have a chance to catch some keeper red grouper, but we’re not seeing a ton of them until we get into the deepest nearshore waters. Once we’re offshore, we have a much better chance of catching large red grouper. Most of our nearshore red grouper are undersized or smaller.

Lake Toho this summer is healthier than ever. With the FWC not spraying any grass on the lake at all this year, there hasn’t been any algae bloom like years prior. Which has made the water quality and fishing throughout the whole lake solid. We’ve been catching an average of 20 to over 30+ fish a day on our guide trips and with conditions holding strong, it should remain that way for the rest of the summer.

As usual at this time of year, the bulk of the bass have moved offshore to hydrilla beds, brush piles, and shell beds. Most of them can be found in hydrilla. If there’s hydrilla off the Kissimmee grass edge, chances are there’s bass in it.

The best bite in these hydrilla areas has been on Zoom flukes, senkos, and Zoom speedworms. If you have a good wind and clouds, a lightly weighted speedworm reeled across the top of the grass has been working well. But if you don’t have the wind or clouds then a fluke or weightless senko has been more productive.

In the areas of shell beds that have bass, topwater has been working early, with flukes and senkos becoming productive when the topwater bite quits. They haven’t been schooling consistently in these areas though which can make the topwater bite inconsistent.

and can sometimes just be completely dependent upon the weather, the ones we are catching are coming off of worms and craws dragged on the bottom with either just a light bullet weight or a shaky head.

However if you’re looking to book a trip and want to get the most out of your day, golden shiners have been the way to go. The bulk of the fish we’re catching right now are coming off of shiners and its what we’ve been getting most of the bigger bass we’ve been catching off of also, regardless of the weather.

Lake Toho just continues to impress with the number of quality bass being pulled out of it this year and with the water quality being better than I’ve seen in years, it should continue to produce the fish that’s made it famous for years to come.

Key Largo BBI Event July 13, 2023

Well, the fun BBI tournament in Key Largo was back on today after Covid shut it down for 3 years. This is a fund raising tournament for a ministry that helps single moms coming out of abusive relationships and they are assisted with job training, clothing, work, shelter and more. I had three very cool people on board today in Dawn, Jan and James. They were so laid back they told me they would like to be back early so we fished for three hours and in the process Dawn landed a really nice snook, James lost a tarpon and landed a jack while Jan sat back and relaxed. Then, they decided it was time to hit the pool and we were done for the day. Such cool people and I’m glad it all worked out for us.

Working through the heat July 16, 2023

Man it’s been hot but that comes as no surprise to anyone reading this report.

Today I had Jonathan and Mary Ann aboard for a 6 hour Sunday

No giants this morning but a great morning no doubt with Mike from Pennsylvania surprisingly the best bite of the morning came in the heat of the day he was pulling in one after another Joe and Raymond from the Rapala team were here for the big icast convention and wanted to see what Toho was all about and they sure got a taste of it! Raymond got his new PB of 6 pounds 7 ounces. They also got some other chunks with the second biggest coming in at just under 5. All were caught off of

trip. Right off the bat at 7am the water temps were 88 degrees and the bonefishing was slow. I moved them to other flats to shark fish and boy was it slow with Jonathan hooking a nice lemon shark but the hook coming free about 10 minutes into the fight. At this point the water temps had reached 90 degrees and I wasn’t seeing much activity so we moved on to wrap up the trip bonefishing. It turned out this was the right call and it paid off with Jonathan landed his first bonefish. Whew, that was close!

Screw The Heat! July 22, 2023

“Alex, 11 o’clock 30 feet, cast 10 feet in front of the wake! Tyler you cast 2 o’clock 35 feet, 10 feet in front of the wake!” That’s how today started with zero wind, calm conditions and bonefish all around. Early on Tyler hooked and lost a freight train of a bonefish and then lost another one while Alex missed the bite on a third one, all within 45 minutes of our trip. What a way to start! Absolutely amazing morning with John and his family from New Zealand! Their first time bass fishing and they were able to land over 25 fish in 2 hours with a big 6lber to go with it!

Another successful day on Lake Toho! Today we had Robert, Tara, and their daughter here from Illinois. Robert broke his PB on just the second fish he caught! Their daughter got her PB also with a 4.5 pounder. We ended up with 24 bass total and caught a little bit of everything else including a gar, snapping turtle, and bowfin.

hour later, we poled off 100 yards and schools were coming straight at us down a shore line. School after school and shot after shot started to add up until the tide slackened and so did the fishing. So far we were licking our wounds having lost two fish, missed another bite and no matter how good the cast these guys were making, the schools of bonefish would swim over our live shrimp and not eat it, probably not seeing it. Man that was tough. But, oh but, when that tide turned I had grown concerned because most of the best fishing has been on the outgoing tide. Oh, but I said “but”. Once the tide turned and started coming back in it was on and the guys got three bonefish each for a total at the end of the trip of 9 bonefish hooked and six landed. Yes, that is what summer is all about!!! Well, I’m taking a few days off for my birthday but I’ll be back at the end of next week and ready to get back to work.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. COAST GUARD

is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. After successful inspection you are awarded a vessel safety check sticker which is affixed to your vessel near your state registration sticker. 2023 - The Coast Guard urges recreational boaters, paddlers, anglers, and others to remain safe on the water by taking a Safe Boating Course. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other lifesaving lessons. A boating safety course will teach the basic skills to operate a vessel safely. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. To continue offering these classes safely for the students and instructors, they are being offered on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. Because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! Classes are $50 per student and include books, supplemental materials, and course completion certificates. The next classes begin in January and continue monthly. AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license.
