The Orlando Boat Show Cruises into the Orange County Convention Center August 18-20, 2023

ORLANDO, Fla. (July 13, 2023) – The Marine Industry Association of Central Florida (MIACF) presents the Orlando Boat Show for a three-day event August 1820, 2023 at the Orange County Convention Center, North Hall B. The highly anticipated show features 20 of Central Florida’s top boat dealers representing more than 80 manufacturers with approximately 400 boats on display.

The Orlando Boat Show features a wide variety of boats including bowriders, center consoles, deck boats, flats boats, freshwater fishing boats, jet boats, pontoons, and surf boats to fit any lifestyle and budget.

Extra incentives are available only during the show from dealers and manufacturers such as extended warranties, service packages, waived dockage, enhanced electronics, and accessory packages.

Twiggy, the waterskiing squirrel

In 1978, a baby squirrel was rescued after being blown from her nest during a hurricane. Lou Ann and Chuck Best chose to take her in and make her a part of their family. Twiggy the world-famous water-skiing squirrel has been entertaining adults and children alike with her water ski show since 1979. Due to her husband’s passing in 1997, Lou Ann decided to make water safety an important part of Twiggy’s act. She created a squirrel-sized life jacket for Twiggy to wear in her performances. Thereafter, all of Twiggy’s shows are focused on teaching her fans about water safety.

Today, Twiggy starts a new chapter in her legacy. Lou Ann’s son, Chuck Best Jr. has decided to take on the family business and continue Twiggy’s story. The Hague, Netherlands (27 July 2023) – This summer, the world of competitive sailing is set to witness a historic moment as the Dutch sailing organization Watersportverbond introduces their first-ever emissionfree, hydrogen-powered coach boat, the H2C Boat, at the 2023 World Sailing Championships in The Hague, Netherlands. The H2C Boat, equipped with a Torqeedo Deep Blue electric motor, revolutionizes the sailing community and paves the way towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly era.

The H2C Boat, developed by the Dutch start-up H2 Marine Solutions, represents the collective efforts of a consortium of innovative companies, including longtime Torqeedo partner De Stille Boot and the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). Torqeedo played a vital role in supporting the project from inception, providing the powerful Deep Blue 50R outboard motor and Deep Blue 40 lithium-ion battery, as well as contributing to the crucial energy management system. Powered by a 40 kWh Deep Blue battery and an additional 51 kWh hydrogen capacity, the H2C Boat utilizes a hydrogen fuel cell as a range

extender, ensuring a minimum of five hours of operation on the water. This revolutionary vessel, measuring six meters in length and capable of reaching a top speed of 45 km/h, offers a silent and emissions-free alternative to conventional coach boats, making it the ideal companion for athletes during their training and competitions.

Florida Blue Crab Salad with Avocado

Ingredients:

1/3 cup red onion, finely chopped

3 tablespoons mayonnaise

2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, finely chopped

3 teaspoons fresh squeezed lime juice

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

1/2 teaspoon lime zest

8 ounces jumbo lump blue crabmeat, picked over for shells

1 large ripe avocado, halved, pitted, peeled

Directions: Mix together red onion, mayonnaise, cilantro, lime juice, cumin and lime zest in medium sized mixing bowl.

Gently mix in crabmeat. Season salad with salt and pepper.

Drizzle avocado halves with remaining 1 teaspoon lime juice to prevent discoloration and season with salt and pepper. Arrange avocado halves, cut side up, on plates.

Fill tops of avocado with crab salad. Garnish salad with lime wedges.

10 Paddleboard Safety Tips to Follow

Have you ever tried stand-up paddleboarding (SUP)? If so, you know that SUP boards offer an exciting experience for watersports enthusiasts of all ages. However, there are some important paddleboard safety tips to keep in mind while you’re out on the water.

10 Paddleboard Tips to Keep in Mind

Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned pro, these paddleboard tips will keep you safe on the water:

1. Check Your Equipment

While this probably goes without saying, you’ll want to ensure your equipment is in good condition before getting on the water. We recommend checking it both at home and your paddleboard location.

If using an inflatable board, ensure it’s pumped to the recommended PSI. Additionally, make sure your paddle is put together properly, and your equipment is suitable for the conditions.

2. Check Yourself

In addition to checking your equipment, you must ensure you’re dressed appropriately for the weather and water temperature. Wear a wet suit underneath your clothes if the water is cold. Essentially, you want to dress as if you were going to fall in.

3. Wear a Leash

If you accidentally fall in, a leash prevents you from drifting away from your board. Use an ankle leash for surf or non-flowing water and a

4. Wear a Life Jacket

When on the water, you should always wear a life jacket or personal floatation device (PFD). If you get separated from your board for whatever reason, your life jacket is your lifeline.

Before embarking on your journey, let someone (reliable) know where you’re headed and what time you plan on returning. Arrange to call at a certain time to let them know you’re not aimlessly drifting off and away.

If an emergency arises, dial 999 and ask for the Coast Guard. Additionally, consider downloading an app to help pinpoint your location if you need assistance.

6. Check the Forecast

Every paddleboarder should familiarize themselves with various wind and tide conditions. In addition, check the local weather forecast so you know what the conditions will look like when you arrive and throughout the day.

If you’re paddling on a river, heavy rainfall happening upstream can cause sudden surges in river levels. And fast-moving water carries extreme risk, as surging waves, eddies, and currents require advanced training to navigate. Similarly, even a slight wind makes paddling difficult if you’re paddling on a lake or the ocean. It also increases the risk of capsizing –so be prepared.

7. Have Local Knowledge

Every paddleboarder should be somewhat familiar with the water they’re paddling through. And usually, that means talking to local paddleboarders, surfers, kayakers, and sailors beforehand. They can tell you about the tidal movement, wind direction, and potentially hidden dangers.

8. Bring a Friend

Not only is paddling with a friend good safety practice, but it’s also more fun! Recruit a handful of water-loving adventure junkies or join a local paddle group.

9. Know Which Way the Wind is Blowing

Knowing where the wind is blowing (and how it will blow later) is incredibly important when planning your paddle excursion.

Whenever possible, start paddling into the wind. This ensures that your return is easier than your departure, which is ideal when feeling fatigued. Additionally, be wary of offshore winds, as they can be more powerful than expected.

Pro Tip: Never paddle out further than your ability to return. (Especially if the current and/ or winds are strong.) Underestimating Mother Nature poses serious risks.

Take a SUP Course

One of the best ways to feel confident and capable out on the water is to take a SUP course. For a hands-on learning experience, we recommend going through a local watersport

organization. Check out the American Canoe’s website for available classes near you. However, you could always take a course online.

What to Avoid

As long as you follow these paddling safety tips, your experience on the water will be great. But if you need further reminding, here are some things to avoid when paddleboarding:

Bad weather: Don’t paddle in weather conditions that you aren’t completely comfortable navigating.

Paddling out further than you can return: Don’t paddle for miles in the direction of the current only to discover that you don’t have the strength or endurance to return.

Bringing the wrong equipment: Make sure to have a properly fitting life jacket and dress for the temperature of the water. That means bringing a wetsuit if necessary.

Not knowing how to swim: Every paddleboarder should anticipate falling into the water. Therefore, it’s crucial that you know how to swim first.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. 2023 - The Coast Guard urges recreational boaters, paddlers, anglers, and others to remain safe on the water by taking a Safe Boating Course. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other lifesaving lessons. A boating safety course will teach the basic skills to operate a vessel safely. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. To continue offering these classes safely for the students and instructors, they are being offered on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. Because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. Catch and release snook fishing should be good around lighted docks at night or in the surf. Look for false albacore (little tunny) to possibly show up in the coastal gulf later in the month.

Tarpon addicts will still be able to get their fix this month. You should still find a few tarpon in the coastal gulf early in the month. Drifting live baits or casting flies, DOA Baitbusters, DOA Shrimp and DOA 4” CAL shad tails should all work. As tarpon thin out along beaches, they will move to inside waters where you may find them schooling around bridges or rolling on deep grass flats. They will also feed in schools of ladyfish that are feeding on the surface. You should also find juvenile tarpon from 10 to 30-pounds in creeks, canals, turning basins and around dock lights. Your snook tackle will work fine for smaller tarpon although you’ll need a leader of 40 to 50-pounds to keep them from going through it. Fly anglers should score with 8 or 9-weight fly rods, floating or sink tip lines and scaled down tarpon flies.

Regulations for Spotted

Seatrout have changed in southwest Florida to a 3 fish per person, bag limit and a 6 fish boat limit. Trout must be from 15”-19” with one allowed per vessel over 19”. In my opinion it’s important to protect larger trout, which are usually female breeders. Full regulations and details for all species can be viewed at https://myfwc.com/

You’ll find snook around lighted docks and bridges in the ICW and in the surf. Small white flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow, DOA Shrimp or CAL jigs with shad tails and jerk worms should all work well. The same lures and flies will work at night

Reds should school up this month, although their numbers have been thinner for the past couple of years. You should find them on shallow flats where they’ll be easier to find when the tide is low. Look for “nervous” water when it is slick calm or a slick patch of water when there is a ripple on the water. They may push a wake that looks like a boat wake. I try to be as quiet as possible in shallow water, poling to locate them. Once you’ve located a school of reds, try to get ahead of them to intercept them, much like tarpon fishing. If you work around the edges of the school, you may be able to catch a few of them before they spook. We often also find big jacks, blues and other predators in the mix along with reds. Top water plugs and fly poppers or Gurglers may draw some big bites. The DOA PT-7 top water bait and 4” CAL shad tail should both work well on schooling reds.

Trout fishing should be good this month. You may find a big trout in skinny water at first light. Focus on mullet or bait schools to find them. Top water plugs, fly poppers or Gurglers should be very effective at that time of day. Handle big trout over 19” gently, since they are usually females that may be full of roe. I like the same areas for big trout that I like for reds.

After it gets bright and starts to warm up, drop out to deeper grass flats (4’ to 8’) for trout and more.

I like to drift and cast ahead of my drift with CAL jigs and

shad tails or jerk worms or an Ultra Hair Clouser fly fished on a sink tip fly line. I make a series of drifts to locate fish and then shorten the drift or anchor depending on conditions. Ladyfish may feed in glass minnow schools and if they stay up long enough, it will attract trout, blues, mackerel, tarpon or sharks. Wide profile plastic baits or flies fished slowly around the edges of breaking fish will help keep ladyfish off your lure or fly and give you a chance to catch a tarpon. When blues, Spanish mackerel or sharks are in the mix, add 6” of wire or heavy fluorocarbon. Also look for tripletail around crab trap floats, buoys or channel markers in inshore waters this month. A CAL shad tail or DOA shrimp rigged weedless or my Grassett Flats Minnow fly with a weed guard should get the job done.

You might find false albacore (little tunny) or Spanish mackerel in the coastal gulf this month. Look for baitfish to find them. The Tampa Bay ship channel is often one of the first areas where I find them this time of year. Small white flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow, poppers or Crease flies should all work well. Spin anglers should score with CAL jigs and shad tails. You’ll need to add wire or heavy fluorocarbon when toothy fish are around.

Even though it is one of the hottest months of the year, there are lots of options this month. I usually tarpon fish as long as I can either in the coastal gulf or in inside waters. An early start for snook or tarpon around lighted docks or bridges and then on the flats for reds, trout and more is a good option. Our natural resources are under constant pressure from red tides fueled by industrial, agricultural and residential runoff, toxic spills and discharges, freezes, increasing fishing pressure and habitat loss and degradation, please limit your kill, don’t kill your limit!

Rough Waters and Reel Stories: A Day of Fishing With Friends!

Tania started back to school on Thursday, so on Friday I went fishing with my buddies Tony and Chris. We all met at the dock about 6:30am. The marine forecast looked good, about 2ft seas with a SE wind at 5-10kts; However, the weather was questionable. As we headed out the inlet, we were one of two boats heading out, which was unusual.

It was a bit rough heading out the inlet, but we could tell that it smoothed out once you were out. The plan today was to head north to Vero Cove and see if we could put some decent snapper in the cooler. The run to Vero Cove was a bit rough. The seas might have only been 2 feet but they were close together.

We arrived at the first spot, which was just south of Vero Cove, about 7:15 am and it didn’t take us long to wet some lines. With the current conditions our drift was northwestward. It took about 10 minutes for the first bite. Tony landed a small lane snapper. It was the right species; however, it was too small to keep.

We spent about 20 minutes on the first drift and we all caught fish. Tony caught three fish one being a 11 ¾ inch mangrove snapper which went into the cooler. I caught a grunt which we used for bait and Chris caught a small black margate.

This spot turned out to be as productive as the first two spots. We had been watching the storm out at sea and it looked like it was dissipating, so we decided to go out to deeper waters. At this point the wind and seas picked up. We were probably 2-3ft seas at maybe 4 seconds. It was going to be a long rough ride in the boat I had today. About 10 minutes into the ride, we saw lightning in the direction we were heading.

Seeing the lightning and the sporty conditions made me rethink going to deeper waters. I turned the boat towards the inlet and told Tony and Chris we would hit a few other shallow reefs and if they didn’t produce, we would head back in the inlet and see what we could come up with.

Once again none of the shallow reefs produced anything so we just ran back into the inlet. With the outgoing tide I pulled up along the north rocks and drifted east to the point. We didn’t have much action, but right as we go to the point Chris hooked up with something large. His rod was doubled over. Unfortunately, the fight was short lived as he broke off a few minutes into the fight. Good thing Chris had lots of the Diamond jig he lost.

We did a second drift in the same area and unfortunately it was no better than the first drift. Only a handful of small fish were caught. So, I decided to go further into Vero Cove so see if we could find where the bigger

While we were at the end of the inlet, we saw lots of life but nothing was really biting what we were throwing. We still had lots of live bait so we moved back to the river and went to South Causeway bridge. We fished the bridge for about 30 minutes before I made the call to call it a day. The sky was getting dark and I really didn’t feel like getting stuck in a storm on the boat.

All in all, we had a good day on the water with some great company. The fishing wasn’t great but the conversation and fellowship was good. Tania and I pray all who made it out over the weekend had safe and blessed trips. And those of you going out this week may you have tight lines and good times!
