Team Quantified Wins Back-To-Back SFC Titles

Dallas, Texas – Sport Fishing Championship (SFC), the governing body of saltwater tournament fishing, has completed its second season, in which Team Quantified took the top prize following the San Juan International Billfish Tournament.

With four blue marlin releases over the course of three days, Team Quantified won the International Billfish Tournament and with it, their second SFC Championship in a row, earning $1 million. Just like last year, they were also crowned winners of the Gulf Division Championship this season, after winning first place in four different tournaments and accruing well over 10,000 points.

“It feels good,” said Team Quantified Captain Justin Drummond. “Me and my crew, we know what we’re capable of. I’m just happy and really proud of them and myself that we’re finally letting everyone see what we can do. I can’t wait till next year as we run for a three-peat.”

On the second day of the tournament, Team Quantified ran into a spot of trouble when they had a fish get disqualified due to a time restriction. As anglers only have 2.5 hours to release a fish after the initial hookup, when the fight went overtime, the team lost that catch and had to make it up throughout the remainder of the day.

“As the leader of the team, I say, ‘we can overcome this’,” said Captain Justin Drummond. “We’re not going to let it bother us, let’s get back to fishing. It was tough on my crew, but we were able to wash it off immediately and move right past to overcome that deficit.”

SFC’s third season will get underway in the spring of 2024.

DEBUTING AT FLIBS 2023: All-New Highfield Sport 800

Available with up to twin 150hp outboard power for breathtaking performance, the new 26’7” Highfield Sport 800 is equally suited to serving as an offshore-capable primary boat and tender to a large luxury yacht. The Sport 800 offers a maximum passenger capacity of 15. The aft cockpit makes a spacious outdoor-dining spot for six featuring a large removable table and handy refrigerator under the aft-facing seat. The rear seat folds over to form an aft sunpad, complementing the large sundeck

in the bow. A standard hardtop provides both shade and sleek styling cues for the new Sport 800.

Highfield ZeroJet 330

The new Highfield ZeroJet 330 – the world’s first production RIB equipped with electric jet propulsion, which made its world debut at the Dusseldorf International Boat Show in January –will be unveiled to the U.S. market at FLIBS. Highfield Boats collaborated with New Zealand electric jet propulsion ZeroJet to design this exciting new 11’ model. The ZeroJet 330 offers sporty performance, with top speeds of up to 22 knots, combined with silent running and the added safety provided by a jet pump rather than a propeller. Twin 48V LiFePO4 lithium-ion batteries provide run times of up to 7.5 hours.

Highfield Classic MAX

New for 2024, Highfield Boats’ popular Classic RIBS range will be offered with a newly expanded “MAX” extra-large bow locker, purpose-designed to hold different brands of lithium-ion batteries so the boats can be rigged with different brands and types of electric propulsion. The MAX boats’ bow locker also is perfect for boaters who want to store more gear in their tender and keep it safe in a lockable compartment. Red Sunset Clam Chowder

Ingredients

2 slices bacon, cut into 1/2-inch squares

1/3 cup onion, chopped

3 tablespoons green bell pepper, diced

3 tablespoons celery, diced

2/3 cup potato, peeled and diced

1 (8-oz) bottle clam juice

1 cup canned, diced tomatoes, with juice

1½ dozen littleneck clams, rinsed well

2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Cook bacon in a 3-quart heavy saucepan over medium heat until golden. Reduce heat to low. Add onion, bell pepper, and celery and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in potato, clam juice, and tomatoes; cover and simmer 10 minutes.

Add clams; cover and simmer 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until clams open. Discard any clams not open after 10 minutes. Move pan off heat.

Remove clams with tongs reserving a few clams in the shell for garnish. Detach clam meat from remaining shells and return meat to chowder. Stir in parsley, salt and pepper to taste. Note: The chowder (without the clams and parsley) can be made 1 day ahead. Bring chowder to a simmer then add clams and serve.

Fall patterns are already beginning although we may not notice the changes. The sun’s rays peeking up over the eastern horizon around 7 a.m. is at least an hour later than a few months ago. Fish begin a transitional period now as the days grow shorter and the hours of darkness increase. Just this one change signals to fish that the winter months ahead are on our doorstep. This triggers the movement of most inshore species of fish toward areas where they will spend the next several months.

Snook end their spawning rituals by either the new or full moon in September and begin moving in from the beaches and passes and on to the flats to feed. Ambush points where good water movement will carry forage is where you’ll find these fish staging to eat. These temperature-sensitive fish rely on a layer of body fat to survive cold winters and reduced forage that’s available during the winter months. Linesiders get extremely aggressive, pummeling topwater lures like the big 94MR18 MirrOlure Top Dog. These surface-walking lures zig and zag in an irresistible motion, enticing strikes. 2023 LLGF REMAINING EVENTS, WITH OPTIONAL OR INCLUDED FISHING ARE:

Baitfish are beginning to school near the beaches and outside points in preparation for an exit into warmer Gulf waters. Recent rains from Hurricane Idalia caused a water temperature drop of several degrees, pushing many species of fish into the shallows to feed. The change is triggering migrations of nearly all fish inshore and in nearshore waters at this time.

Greater numbers of sheepshead are beginning to move inside the bays and on the flats around Joe Bay, Terra Ceia, and Fort DeSoto. Big breeder-size redfish that have been hanging in the Gulf are starting to filter in on the flats, foraging for food. They will likely hang for another month or two depending on weather systems and how long their forage stays in the bays.

Nearshore artificial reefs have slowly begun to produce a few flounder. This fish is typically a late fall/ winter species for us to target using quarter-ounce Jigs with 3-inch CAL Shads or MirrOlure Marsh Minnow Jr. soft plastics. You’ll find these fish around changes of depth, bottom makeup, and where there is good moving water, like along channel edges

and in small passes or pinch points between mangrove islands.

An influx of Spanish mackerel has been coming in in small waves with schools running off the beaches. Fast-moving jigs, plugs, and spoons are top artificials for them. With a mild winter, you can expect them to hang through New Year’s.

Possibly the most targeted species here is the spotted seatrout. The red tide of the past few years has done some damage to the stocks but we are seeing better numbers of fish moving into the region. The DOA Deadly Combo has been very effective on deep grass flats for these fish. Drifting the DOA Shrimp along channel edges can also produce excellent results along with slowsinking lures like the 17MR49 MirrOlure MirrOdine.

No live bait is needed, just pick up a few lures and head for some water for some great fall fishing.

Southwest Florida with Captain Rick Grassett

September is one of my favorite months. Reds should be schooling on shallow grass flats and you also might find big trout there at first light. Baitfish along beaches will attract Spanish mackerel, false albacore (little tunny), sharks, tarpon and more. You should find snook around docks and bridges in the ICW. There should also be tarpon around bridges at night and in areas of Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor. Juvenile tarpon from 10 to 30-pounds should be a good option in creeks and canals.

Tarpon should still be a good option this month. Many have moved to inside waters, so you’ll find them around bridges, over deep grass flats or deeper areas. When tarpon move into these areas, they are in a feeding mode. After a long migration and with their spawning duties completed, they need to rest and eat to restore themselves. Ladyfish will feed in glass minnow schools and tarpon will gorge themselves on ladyfish. I have also seen tarpon, “ball” glass minnows into tight schools, and eat them by the bucket full! Fly anglers should score with wide profile patterns, such as Lefty’s Deceiver or EP flies. Small flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow, tied on a 1/0 or 2/0 hook, are a good choice for tarpon that are feeding on glass minnows.

You should find snook this month around docks and bridges close to passes. They will also start making their move towards shallow flats where you might find them staging along

sand bars or in potholes. Fly poppers or Gurglers may draw some big strikes in shallow water at night or early in the day! I often fish lighted docks and bridges for snook before dawn before moving to the flats after daylight. My Grassett Snook Minnow fly is my ‘go to” fly pattern for snook at night.

Reds are usually in large schools in September. You may find them in shallow water when the tide is high or along the edges of flats when the tide is low. Look for wakes, some as big as boat wakes, or “pushes” to locate them. If it is calm, a school of reds may look like a nervous patch of water or if there’s a ripple on the surface, the school may appear as a slick patch of water. Once you’ve located them, try to get in front of them and work around the edges of the school to avoid spooking the whole school. Fly anglers should score with fly poppers, Gurglers and wide profile baitfish fly patterns. I like to be as quiet as possible in shallow water, using a push pole to move my boat. It is great to find a big school of reds but remember, if you spook one fish you may spook the whole school. Running an outboard may make fish show themselves, but in the long run it will make them harder to catch. I sometimes also find big jacks and blues mixed with schools of big reds in shallow water. Not a bad problem!

Spotted trout fishing should also be good this month. Regulations have changed with a 3 fish per person, bag limit and a 6 fish boat limit. Trout must be from 15”-19” with one allowed per vessel over 19”. In my opinion it’s important to

protect larger trout, which are usually female breeders. Full regulations and details on trout and other species can be viewed at https://myfwc.com/ . Look for big trout in skinny water in many of the same places that you find reds this month. They will be most active in low light, either first thing in the morning or at dusk, particularly if we’ve had an afternoon shower. Cloud cover in the afternoon will also reduce heating of shallow flats, which usually makes fish more active. The same flies that you use for reds will work well for big trout in shallow water.

You may also find trout mixed with blues, pompano, Spanish mackerel, flounder and more on deep grass flats. I like to drift and cast quartering ahead of my drift. Fly anglers should do well with an Ultra Hair Clouser fly fished on a clear intermediate sink tip. In addition to making a series of drifts to find fish, focus on bait schools, breaking fish or diving birds to find fish. You may find tripletail on buoys, crab trap floats or channel markers in inside waters this month. A lightly weighted fly with a weed guard, like my Grassett Flats Minnow, works well for me. The Early Autumn Wahoo bite continues the late Summer momentum! These toothy, striped torpedoes have been so plentiful and big that our top-notch tackle can barely keep up! These fish can turn your reel into molten lava if you’re not careful. Fortunately, our Lady Pamela Sportfishing crews are well-versed with all things Wahoo and stay in control. Nobody can put you on this bite like Lady Pamela Sportfishing! Recent cold fronts (cold for us down here)

have brought windy conditions, which are perfect for Sailfishing. The Sailfish are frisky and up on the reefs showering up schools of Ballyhoo. Our clients have been putting up big numbers of Sailfish catches and releases as our Fleet focuses almost exclusively on fishing live baits underneath our fishing kites. We really love to show our clients the art of Kite fishing. Kite fishing is a truly amazing and engaging experience as you get to see the Sailfish AS THEY EAT the bait. Nothing gets the blood pumping like watching a double- or triple-header Sailfish bite up on the surface. We can fish up to three (3) live baits per kite, with at least two (2) kites up at any one time. We’re fishing between 60 and 250 feet of water. When there is not enough wind to keep the kites in the air, we can also slow troll live baits such as Ballyhoo and Goggle Eyes as well as troll our specially-crafted mullet strips. When we’re trolling live Ballyhoo, the occasional White Marlin shows up in the spread, just to make life REALLY interesting.

BLACKFIN TUNAS AND BONITOS ARE BACK!

The Blackfin Tunas and Bonitos are back to blow up our live baits and trolled baits to keep drags screaming and anglers giggling. We’re also catching the occasional Yellowfin Tuna! King Mackerel (‘Kingfish”) and Barracuda continue to sharpen their teeth up on the reef. Like Sailfish, Kingfish absolutely love to crush a live bait suspended beneath our kites. Kingfish have teeth that are more like surgical scalpels and they fight hard, which is why we call them “smokers” – they will smoke your drag on scorching runs once they’re hooked. We have to fish wire leaders to make sure we don’t miss these acrobatic bites. The Barracuda are lurking on the reefs to ambush the unsuspecting baits as well. Bonefish Every Day! September 4-8, 2023

I had the pleasure of fishing with Ron from Arizona for four days. The plan was for Ron to catch his first bonefish and realize a dream of his after a friend told him how special bonefish were. Well, we spent four days bone fishing and it worked out pretty well. Using a combination of live shrimp on a split shot and live shrimp on a jig to cover more ground as we worked areas I knew they travel in, Ron worked it. The first two days were tough with each day providing one bonefish per day. Great, he got one but we really needed more.

Days two and three were a bast with Ron getting

Chad fished with me 5 years ago and was back today for a full day of mixing it up. We worked hard early morning to get him his first bonefish but there were snook around so we began by throwing top waters at snook missing a couple of bites and landing a cool jack that crushed the top water lure. Along the way I noticed we blew out a few bonefish so we switched to buck tail jigs and on the third cast Chad got his first bonefish. Wow! We fished here and there for more bones with no more hook ups so we fished a few more spots and ended up sharks

fishing on the flats and having a blast doing that. It was a cool trip with a very cool guy. Thanks Chad!

Week in Review

August 14-24, 2023

This week I had a few father son trips and a fly fishing trip with local angler Dean. My father and son trips were mainly shark trip and the kids had a blast catching bait and then sharks on the flats. Fishing has been good generally although the bonefishing hasn’t been as solid as I would have liked even though water temps are much better now. We’ll see what next week brings us.

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA - Mudville Grille - 3105 Beach Boulevard - Capt. Russell is happy to be a sponsor of the Florida Lure Anglers Club in Jacksonville, Fla. The FLA is not just a club for professional anglers, they are promoting saltwater lure fishing at all levels, especially among beginners. They do this by offering Junior, Teen and Lady “Angler of the Year” titles as a complement to our Club “Angler of the Year” title. Anglers will compete for points in an annual series of up to 10 tournaments to win these coveted titles Furthermore, we encourage a family environment by allowing Junior and teen Anglers to join in as an addition to our normal two-adult per boat limit. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check

is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary,

confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination.

The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. After successful inspection you are awarded a vessel safety check sticker which is affixed to your vessel near your state registration sticker. BOAT AMERICA CLASSES – CLEARWATER, FLORIDA COAST GUARD AUXILIARY2023 - The Coast Guard urges recreational boaters, paddlers, anglers, and others to remain safe on the water by taking a Safe Boating Course. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other lifesaving lessons. A boating safety course will teach the basic skills to operate a vessel safely. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. To continue offering these classes safely for the students and instructors, they are being offered on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. Because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida! Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. THE PORT ST.
