7 Red Towboats Go Pink in October to Bring Breast Cancer Awareness to the Water

SPRINGFIELD, Va., Sept. 26, 2023 – At any other time of year, the red towing response vessels of the on-water TowBoatUS towing fleet are helping recreational boaters get home after their boats have broken down or run aground. However, in October, seven TowBoatUS response boats across the country have been turned pink to bring the message of breast cancer awareness to the water in hopes of saving lives and finding a cure for a disease that affects 1 in every 8 women.

The seven locally owned and operated companies running pink boats for October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month include TowBoatUS Boston, Massachusetts; TowBoatUS Daytona, Florida; TowBoatUS Lake Texoma, Oklahoma; TowBoatUS Mobile, Alabama; TowBoatUS Chicago, Illinois; TowBoatUS San Diego, California; and TowBoatUS Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, this year an estimated 297,790 women and 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. However,

if caught in its earliest, localized stages, the fiveyear relative survival rate is 99%. Advances in early detection and treatment methods have significantly increased breast cancer survival rates in recent years, and there are currently over 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. The National Breast Cancer Foundation offers early detection tips including monthly breast self-exams and how to schedule a mammogram.

“As boating industry leaders and local community members, our local TowBoatUS towing companies wholeheartedly agree that breast cancer is worthy of our undivided attention as Breast Cancer Awareness Month approaches,” said TowBoatUS spokesperson Scott Croft. “These companies have been personally impacted by this terrible disease. Changing seven of our on-water response vessels from red to pink is a simple, impactful and meaningful effort raise awareness and seek out donations to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Coming

together from all across the country to show support in our individual communities as well as a whole organization is incredibly important to us all.”

The seven pink TowBoatUS response vessels range in size from 21 to 34 feet, and will make it easy for boaters to donate to the National Breast Cancer Foundation as each are carrying special QR donation codes on their hull sides to allow boaters to make donations while on the water.

Albemarle 53 Spencer Edition to Debut at Fort Lauderdale International

are proud to announce the debut of the Albemarle 53 Spencer Edition at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, October 25-29, 2023. Albemarle Boats and Spencer Sportfish formed a partnership to design and build this semi-custom Carolina boat line. Keith Privott, Albemarle Director of Sales and Product Development, commented on the project. “Our team is truly excited as many months of planning and construction are now coming to life. The 53 hull was vacuum infused with vinylester resin and composite core, making it our strongest, yet lightest design to date. The entire boat is loaded with innovative details that will allow our customers to go further and do more.”

Hull one features a three stateroom, two head layout with all of the luxuries of home. The full galley contains a cooktop, microwave/ convection oven, and twin refrigerator/freezer drawer units. The spacious salon boasts an “L” shaped sofa, dinette, wet bar, and home theater system. The interior cabinetry and trim molding was handcrafted out of horizontal grain walnut.

The highlight of the bridge is the island helm console, which allows easy access around either side to the forward facing lounge and outboard bench seating. Just above the teak helm pod, a pair of Garmin 8622 displays are reverse-mounted in a matte black surface. The electronics suite includes everything necessary for competitive tournament fishing, including a Furuno Omni

sonar. A Pipewelders half tower, acrylic enclosure, and a pair of Release Marine Trillion helm chairs provide comfort and weather protection for the captain.

The 160 square foot cockpit and mezzanine are decked in natural teak for superior footing, and teak covering boards / coaming and a Release Marine Trillion fighting chair compliment the look in the business end of the boat. Her transom fishbox passes the 5 gallon bucket test, and the wide transom door and gate facilitate boating trophy fish.

The mezzanine features an innovative two-box ice dump, bait freezer, refrigerated drink box, tackle storage, and engine room access. Faux teak accents on the toe rail, drip molding, transom, and entry door complete her timeless look.

She is powered by Twin MTU 10V 1600 HP diesels, providing high cruise speeds, and her hull design gives her the seakeeping ability that both Albemarle and Spencer have long been known for. Mechanical highlights include a 21 KW Onan generator, Seakeeper 9, FCI water maker, and Eskimo ice chipper. A pump room

forward of the engine room bulkhead houses the sonar and other equipment, keeping the engine room uncluttered.

Florida Surf and Turf with Herb-Citrus Butter and Garlic Snap Beans

Ingredients

• 1 (6 to 8-ounce) Florida spiny lobster tail, cut in half lengthwise

• 1 (10 to 12-ounce) Florida beef tenderloin steak

• 1 tablespoon fresh herbs (rosemary, thyme, parsley), chopped fine

• 1 teaspoon all-purpose Florida seasoning blend (such as Everglades)

• 1 teaspoon olive or vegetable oil, for cooking

• 10 to 12 ounces fresh Florida snap beans, snapped at stem

• 1/2 teaspoon fresh garlic, chopped fine

• 1 tablespoon Florida Herb-Citrus Butter, plus additional melted butter for dipping

• 1/2 lemon, squeezed

• Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Preparation:

Preheat a medium-sized sauté pan over medium-high heat.

Season all sides of the beef tenderloin with 3/4 of the seasoning blend and half of the chopped herbs. Add the cooking oil to the preheated sauté pan. Carefully add the seasoned beef tenderloin to the preheated pan. Cook the tenderloin for 2 to 4 minutes on each side. When the desired doneness is reached, remove tenderloin from the pan, allow to rest and top with a pat of Florida Herb-Citrus Butter. The butter should start to melt over the cooked tenderloin, adding lots of flavors and serving as a sauce.

Season each half of the Florida lobster with the remaining seasoning blend and chopped herbs. Add the lobster tails facedown to the same preheated pan where the beef was cooked along with the fresh snap beans. Cook the lobster tail halves for about 3 to 4 minutes. Turn the lobster over and continue to cook until meat is just opaque in the center, about 3 minutes. The snap beans will be done cooking about the same time as the lobster, depending on desired crunchiness. Remove the lobster from the pan and let it rest. Season the snap beans with the fresh garlic and a squeeze of lemon juice. Squeeze more fresh lemon juice over the cooked lobster tails. Serve the Florida beef tenderloin and spiny lobster with the snap beans on a large plate to share. Serve with extra melted herb-citrus butter for dipping.

Deep jigging or vertical jigging is a fishing method that has been practiced around the world but is just now getting acceptance from the saltwater anglers on the east coast. California, Mexico, and Cuba have been yoyo jigging for years and have been very productive.

The introduction of the Butterfly Jigging system several years ago opened the door for other manufactures producing new versions of jigging products.Many of the local companies have also added new jig head designs and soft baits to match the hatch.

Basic:

Find a location with moderate current and look for rocky areas, ledges, or other structures. A good bottom sounder is important to read not only the bottom, but the fish. Position the boat directly over the structure or fish and drop a jig. The weight of the jig is determined by the current and depth of water, so I recommend having a good selection of jigs before startingyou jigging trip.

Technique Grouper:

This simple technique allows you to drop the jig to the bottom, always staying in touch. By this I mean you must always feel the jig, as this will help in hook setting and keeping the jig from twisting around your leader or line. There are several methods of deep jigging. One is positioning the boat directly over the fish or drifting over the bottom across the rocks or wreck.

Always drift parallel to the rocks or wreck. Once the fish are located, it’s time to decide which jig will work

When you drift beyond the ledge, rocks, or wreck area, crank up and start another up current drift. Drop down to the bottom, crank one to two turns on the reel,this should get you several feet of the bottomstart jigging by lifting the rod tip up in a quick motion and dropping down again this creates the effect of a wounded bait. Once a fish is hooked, drop a marker over the side or hit your GPS button as this will give you a reference point for your next drift or to do a stationary drop.

When drifting for your best position in the boat, a good point to remember is that when “the wind is in your face you are in the right place.”

Anchoring is another choice if there is a strong current or strong wind, here you have a choice use an anchor or if you have one of the newer trolling motor’s us spot lock. Position the boat over the structure and start jigging, allowing the jig to hit bottom every time. Groupers will follow and attach a jig up to five or six feet from the bottom its best to keep the jig at least several feet from the bottom to avoid losing them to the rocks.

Technique Mangrove Snapper

Mangrove snapper jigging is slightly different in that you are fishing right on the bottomrather thanabove the bottom. A good bottom machine will mark mangrove snapper as they are grouped together. Drop the jig and follow it down on your bottom machine until it reaches the area where the snapper is showing up and start your jigging at that point. It’s a trial and error for the novice, but with a little hard work you can

manage the technique. Jig heads with soft baits work best and a little Pro-Cure Saltwater Super Gel scent on the soft baits works wonders to help increase the bite.

Tackle Grouper:

With metal jigs in fast currents or deep water, I prefer OKUMA Azores 5000 spinningreelmedium heavy action rod with 40-pound test FINSWindtamer braided linetied to 40-pound test clear mono leader at least 40-inches long. I find that a good grade of clear monofilament line works well and has a thinner diameter than fluorocarbon and a lot cheaper in cost.A tight drag is recommended since you are fishing over structures, and these fish will head for the nearest hole or structure when they strike.Under normal conditions I would use a conventional reel for grouper fishing, but I find spinning tackle to be less straining and easier to maintain the proper motion for longer periods of time.

Tackle Mangrove Snapper:

In shallow waters of 15 to 25 feet I prefer jig heads and soft baits on spinning tackle, medium action rod spooled with 15-pound test FINS Windtamer braided line and a 36inch fluorocarbon leader of 30-pound test if the water is clear I might even go down to 20-pound test leader and make it longer. I only use fluorocarbon leader 30-pound and 20-pound when fishing the shallows or flats for redfish, snook, trout, flounder, or mangrove snapper.

INSHORE FISHING REPORT

Redfish bite is HOT around the area from the bays to the beaches and all in between

it’s a super hot redfish bite right now and its primetime redfish action time! If you have ever wanted to try and get one now is the time throughout the area. We are seeing them heavily around the back bay waters and mangrove shorelines. At higher tides, they back up into the mangroves or ‘get into the trees’ as they say. While at medium and lower tides they get into schools and roam the flats, edges, bars and oyster beds. We are finding them in bigger concentrations and good aggressive numbers. It’s a great time to go looking for some redfish around your local flats at mid to low water. They seem to be biting a variety of baits but definitely a crowd favorite is the soft plastic imitation shrimp or paddletails. Live bait wise we see more action on shrimp around the pass but that’s only what people are using, while I hear white bait is working best in the bays but that’s because most of the boaters are cast netting the bait. To me it seems most anything you throw will work as they are fired up!

Snook action around the pass has slowed up a bit as we see many of the fish receding to the back bay waters as the days get shorter and we move towards the onslaught of cool and cold fronts. We are seeing less and less snook stacked up around the dock and bridge lights in the early am while prepping for our offshore and near shore adventures. The beaches are the same as its less and less common to see numbers of snook cruising the swash channels in any concentrations or consistency. However, those fish are all moving just a little ways back to the grass

flats, mangrove islands, and points of canals hanging on docks as they retreat to the back bay winter spots. This is a great time to find plenty of snook actively feeding in transition but you have to hit those areas where they can stage and ambush baits with little effort and relative topography or coverage to provide them some coverage from dolphins and tidal flows.

Sheepshead action is starting to pick up as we see numbers of mangrove snapper starting to lessen in those areas like dock lines, bridge pilings, rock piles and other hard structures. As the waters continue to cool and cold fronts stir up our inshore waters the mangrove snapper start to dissipate while the sheepshead concentrate.

Flounder action picking up around the area especially around bridges and docks and down tide edges of flats where they can ambush passing baits that venture too close to the sandy bottom they hang on. This is typical through the fall while they fatten up for their near shore journey to spawn in the winter months.

Pompano action still happening around our sandy passes, cuts and channels and around inshore bridges. We find them on the edges of flats too hunting live shrimp and other crustaceans.

Triple tail action is picking up and we are starting to see some big fish caught from upper bay to the beach areas. Look for them around floating debris, buoys or channel markers as you cruise the inshore waters. Tossing them a free lined greenback or live

shrimp or even overcasting and working back a soft plastic is a good method to get you a nice triple tail!

NEARSHORE FISHING REPORT

Hogfish action is going well for us on our private fishing charters, but you can get a chance for them on the five hour half day and really target them decently from the ten hour all day too. Hogfish love themselves some live shrimp or fresh dead shrimp, but they really are leader shy and finicky. Often they are the last to bite a bait in the pecking order of fish. However, when we get em chewing often we have a chance to get a handful before having to move and start that process over again. We overcome this by sticking and moving between areas till we find the depth and area the hogfish are hanging then once we get one we stay till the bit dies down, but then we move to something else in that similar depth range and dial in the tactics on how the fish are laying on the ledge or structures.

Lane snapper are also coming up near shore in good numbers in similar areas tto the hogfish and we are seeing them throughout the near shore waters until well offshore too. They are more of a bycatch for us while targeting lane snapper, but if your fishing a trip and not interested in playing the hogfish lottery with lots of live shrimp fishing squid will get you plentiful white grunts or grey snapper along with plentiful lane snapper too!

Saturday, Tania was feeling well enough to go fishing. It had been nearly seven weeks since the last time Tania was fishing with me. Since the weather was questionable, I woke up early to look at the weather and see if it was even feasible to go fishing. I figured there was no reason to wake Tania up if we couldn’t go fishing.

The weather was still questionable, but I woke Tania and headed out. We arrived at the dock at about 6:30 a.m. We were a little early as we couldn’t take the boats out until 7:00 a.m. But I like getting there early to ensure we get a good parking spot, and I can toss a bait before anyone arrives.

We loaded the boat and headed out of the marina by 7:20 a.m. I was torn about where I wanted to go. I didn’t want to travel too far and have us get stuck in a storm, but I wanted to ensure I put Tania on some fish. With an incoming tide, we started at the waste treatment plant wall. We have had decent luck at this spot, so I was hopeful.

Tania caught a 9¾ inch mangrove snapper within a few minutes at our first spot. I was sad that it was short, but I was hopeful that with our first fish being close to being put in the cooler, we could get some fish to come home. Unfortunately, I was mistaken. We fished this spot for about 30 minutes and caught four mangrove snappers, a yellowtail snapper, and a few lane snappers, but they were too short to bring home.

Next, I decided we would drift the channel south of the South Causeway bridge. While drifting, Tania used her favorite inshore jig, a 15g micro jig. Unfortunately, we cannot find the jigs anymore, but they work well. I started by dropping a 1/2oz football head jig with shrimp. We had lots of action, but once again, nothing to come home. Tania caught a few short mutton snappers, a porkfish, a small red grouper, and a catfish. While I caught a few lane snappers and lost something decent near the boat

after a few-minute fight. I was frustrated as it didn’t break me off. It just spit the hook.

We made multiple drifts before we moved over to the turn basin. We made two drifts at the turn basin with very little luck. Tania caught a blue runner and a hardhead catfish, and I did not even get a bit. With the turn basin being unproductive, we decided to fish live shrimp at the Fort Pierce Yacht yard wall.

Like all the other spots today, this spot did not produce any fish to come home. We ended up catching a bunch of short snappers. I did hook up with something nice, but after a 30-second run, it broke me off. We also had a crab float past us, which I was able to catch in the net. I tossed that onto Tania’s hooks, and after 10 minutes, something decided to take it. Unfortunately, it took her into some structure and broke her off.

Fishing with your son James and Mike Martin at the “Take Stock in Children Tournament” in Flamingo sounds like an incredible experience, filled with adventure, camaraderie, and dedication to a noble cause. The early morning start in nasty lightning and ran squalls to the south of us and the 35-mile run in the dark to Flamingo was interesting.

Endurance is certainly put to the test during these long days, with around 14 hours spent on the water from the moment you depart until your return. But it’s all part of the challenge and excitement that comes with such tournaments.

The unique format of the tournament, which focuses on measuring the total inches of Snook, Redfish, and Trout, adds an interesting dimension to the competition. While it’s an individual event, the teamwork and collaboration between you, James, and Mike Martin exemplify the spirit of sportsmanship and mutual support that can make such tournaments truly special.

The “Take Stock in Children Tournament” got off to an exciting start with your son hooking a Tarpon and Mike landing a big Jack. Those early catches must

have set a positive tone for the day ahead.

Starting your fishing adventure at 6:45 a.m. while it was still on the dark side of the morning demonstrates your dedication to making the most of your time on the water. Catching a 19-inch and a 17-inch Trout early on is an excellent warm-up for what was to come.

Now, with those Trout catches out of the way, it was time to shift your focus to the Snook. Using NLBN (No Live Bait Needed) lures, specifically the “Twisted T Mullet,” is a smart choice for your fishing expedition. These lures are designed to mimic natural prey and are often effective in enticing a variety of fish species, including the ones you mentioned earlier like Tarpon, Jack, Trout, and Snook.

We got on the score board with Snook next. We caught 30 or so Snook up to 27 inches and lost a couple bigger. This always hurts but we continued. The bite slowed a bit and we moved on to our Redfish spot. This spot was on fire as well, a couple decent Snook and 9 Redfish up to 23 inches. We also had another Tarpon, a Goliath Grouper and a Tripletail. We fished that spot as long as we could without getting stuck in the shallow water. The rest of the afternoon kind of slowed down a bit with no upgrades.

Day 2

We left at 5 today and made our way over stopping in Tavernier Creek looking for a big Snook on the lighted docks. It didn’t happen and we moved on trying to repeat yesterday’s bite. We pulled up to our spot at 645a.m. Mike had the first bite which was a giant Snook and jumped off

trying to land it. It’s too bad we didn’t need Tarpon because we hooked plenty. James lost another big Snook, just couldn’t stop him once it decided to get into trees.

Right about now it’s starting to get really dark, we can see the lightning explode on the surface. We along with everyone else headed for the marina. We sat there for 45 minutes just waiting to go. We made it to our Redfish spot, but water was too high. We tried but it didn’t happen today. We went back to Snook spot, and it was slow. We needed to upgrade at least 1 of our Snook or Redfish.

I netted one Mullet and cut chunks. We soaked them on the bottom of a Mullet mud. It didn’t take too long, and James had a bite. It was pulling pretty good and then boiled on surface, it was a big Redfish. We netted it and it measured 28 inches. This was a big help. We had another bait out while casting to a pothole. The rod doubled over, and we thought it was a Shark until a 130 lb. Tarpon Jumped a few times. He threw the hook, and they got back to casting in the pothole catching Snook after Snook. Lots of fish but all in the 24-25 range. No one complains when they are catching fish, but it was getting late. We had 35 miles to go in sloppy conditions.

We got lucky today, there are a lot of very good anglers in this tournament. Lots of fun and beats you up can’t wait for next year.

14 yr old Ryder Henderson has been fishing since he was 3. It’s his dream to be a Charter Fisherman. He caught his first huge Tarpon on Indian River Lagoon 9/24/23. He used a large mullet that he cast netted. Shimano teramar xxheavy fast action Pole, Shimano Saragosa 6k reel, 40lb powerpro braid / 60lb leader. He is beyond over the moon! He always gets spooled and never lands one.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat

conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination.

The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. After successful inspection you are awarded a vessel safety check sticker which is affixed to your vessel near your state registration sticker. 2023 - The Coast Guard urges recreational boaters, paddlers, anglers, and others to remain safe on the water by taking a Safe Boating Course. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other lifesaving lessons. A boating safety course will teach the basic skills to operate a vessel safely. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. To continue offering these classes safely for the students and instructors, they are being offered on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. Because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida!
