ort Myers, FL -- The Fort Myers Boat Show, the region’s premier display of boats and boating products, returns to downtown Thursday, November 9th through Sunday, November 12th. “We can’t wait to welcome visitors to the 51st edition of our show,” commented show manager Kyle Good. “There is more demand for exhibit space than ever, dealer inventories are back to normal, and while the Yacht Basin is still not open, we have expanded and maxed out every inch of outdoor and indoor space available.” The variety of sizes and styles of boats continues to grow with more than 40 dealers and almost 120 boat lines on display. The Caloosa Sound Convention Center is packed with engines, electronics, boat lifts, marine accessories and services, plus all the gear and gadgets boaters love. The footprint of the show is very similar to recent shows, with the main entrance at the corner of Bay and Heitman Streets west of the Convention Center. The show winds through Centennial Park, into the Convention Center and then east on Edwards Drive along the Yacht Basin to Lee Street,
where there is an additional show entrance. For the first time, there will be a free, continuous shuttle service between the entrances. “It is a long walk from one end of the show to the other,” comments Good. “We want to make it easier for show visitors to see everything on display and save some walking.” “While boats and boating products are the main event, it is the setting in downtown along the Caloosahatchee that makes this show so special,” said Good. “We encourage visitors to plan a full day to see everything the show offers, and to enjoy the many downtown restaurants and shops.” Captain Terry is back with daily fishing seminars located in the expanded display area on the east end of the show. Safe boating education is another important aspect of the show. There are displays by many boating organizations that provide valuable boating safety information. The Marine Industries
Association’s interactive “Know Before You Go” display in the lobby of the convention center is a great resource for those new to boating or new to Southwest Florida waters. Experienced local boaters are on hand to talk boating safety, boating etiquette, and to offer tips on where to boat safely on the water. Smoked Florida Mullet Ingredients • 2 to 4 Florida mullet, butterflied • 2 to 4 teaspoons Florida seafood seasoning blend • 4 Florida mini cucumbers, quartered • 6 Florida radishes, rinsed and trimmed • 8 pickled Florida okra
Brine • 1 tablespoon Florida seafood seasoning blend • 1 gallon water • 3/4 cup Kosher salt • 1 cup brown sugar, packed tight • 4 bay leaves, crushed
Preparation: Make sure to have space in the refrigerator for a large container to hold at least one gallon of water and the mullet fillets. In the container, add the water, kosher salt, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon seasoning and crushed bay leaves. Stir the ingredients until the salt and sugar have dissolved. Add the mullet filets to the brine and place in the refrigerator overnight. Remove the mullet from the brine and discard the liquid. Set the mullet on a wire rack so they can dry. Once dry, the brined mullet can be seasoned well with more Florida seafood seasoning. The smoker should be between 185 and 200 degrees. Place the brined and seasoned mullet in the smoker for 2 to 3 hours until done and smoked throughout. Remove the smoked Florida mullet from the smoker and let cool slightly. 10 Mistakes to Avoid When Using a Marine VHF Radio Marine VHF radio is a worldwide communication system used by ships, watercraft, and airplanes. It’s a two-way communication method that sends messages via VHF (very high frequency) radio waves. Generally, professional boaters, aviators, and land monitors use these frequencies for safety and transparency reasons. And when you start boating and receive access to these channels and devices, it’s crucial that you act with respect and follow the best practices. Let’s review some common mistakes to avoid while using VFH radio frequencies. Avoid These 10 VHF Radio Mistakes: 1. Not Listening to Who’s Speaking Before Talking Out of all the marine VFH radio standard practices, this is the one to keep top of mind. VFH channels follow certain etiquette, and you’ll want to be mindful of what you say and do. When you join a channel, take some time to pause and listen to any ongoing conversation before you chime in. Avoid cutting people off or speaking over them, and wait for a gap in conversation before speaking. 2. Failing to Identify Yourself There’s a reason your boat has a name! And when you start talking, make sure to introduce yourself with your ship’s name or callsign. A
boat’s call sign is a special combination of letters and numbers used to locate and communicate with it via radio. Regulatory groups assign vessels call signs to make radio conversations easier. 3. Taking Too Long to Speak Keep your messages short and sweet when talking on VHF radio while on your boat. Ensure conversations are concise and avoid off-topic or lengthy discussions. If you’re trying to communicate with a buddy, set up another channel to speak on. Just make sure it’s not for emergencies or distress calls. Keep in mind that all boats use the same few channels, so your messages should remain brief (under three minutes) and reserved for important purposes. You can use your buddy’s boat name and call sign to reach them. If you don’t know their boat name, avoid mentioning their personal name. Instead, call them on their cell phone. Keep channel 16 open for emergencies. And know that if you misuse the channels, the Coast Guard will likely tell you to stop. 4. Utilizing the Wrong Channel As mentioned, the national emergency, safety, and calling frequency is channel 16. Therefore, ships should tune into this channel for essential safety updates and emergency assistance. Channel 16 is monitored by commercial radio operators for U.S. Coast Guard dangers, navaid updates (navigational aid), weather warnings, and boat messages.
And you’ve probably already put this together, but channel 16 should never be used for conversations that aren’t about safety or emergencies. 5. Holding Down Transmit Button When Not Speaking It’s not uncommon for people to accidentally hold the transmit button down after they’ve finished speaking. However, this sends a terrible noise across the air channels. To keep your radio safe from damage — and to protect other boaters’ ears — make sure you’re only pressing the transmit button when you’re speaking. 6. Not Saying “Over” When You’re Done Talking Saying “over” at the end of your speech lets others know you’re finished speaking and awaiting a response. Communication is vital when using VFH radio for boats, and if you don’t necessarily require a response, you can say “out” or “clear.” If you need to contact another boat: • Say its name three times and mention your boat once. • If you don’t receive a response, wait two minutes before trying again. • Refrain from calling the same ship more than three times, and you should wait at least 15 minutes after the third failed attempt to reach the person.
7. Letting Unexperienced Kids Use Radio If your child understands marine radio protocols and takes them seriously, they shouldn’t have a problem using the radio. However, it’s not a toy, and little kids shouldn’t treat them as such. 8. Using Profanity or Making Fake Emergency Calls Kids are often on boats, too! Therefore, you should avoid using foul language. Additionally, making non-serious distress emergency calls is illegal. 9. Not Completing Radio Equipment Checks Boaters should regularly check their radios to ensure they’re working correctly. Radios get worn out from constant use and exposure to harsh conditions. Therefore, checking the transceiver, microphone, speaker, and power supply for any issues before heading out on the water is essential. 10. Using “Radio Lingo” From Movies Movies and TV shows often exaggerate radio conversations. Therefore, repeating language and phrases you’ve only heard once is unwise. Make sure you learn the correct boating communication lingo before you go! Captain’sCorner with Captain Sergio Atanes Backyard Groupers November is the start for some inshore fun fishing as gag groupers move into the canals of Tampa Bay. Change in weather opens the door to different types of fishing. Big reds move into the deeper flats, snook start their migration into the creeks and rivers and breeder speckled trout (gator trout) called for their bright orange mouth roam the deep waters off the bridges and edges of channels. November is my let’s do something different month and I spend at least part of my charters trying to catch gag grouper by trolling in the canals from lower Tampa Bay to Clearwater Beach. First-incoming tide is best, and you need to troll the canals that hold at least 5 feet or more of water at low tide. Second, study your area first as not all canals hold fish. Find the ones that have structures, builders dump rocks and left-over concrete rubble around the docks as protection against erosion. Over the years these structures become artificial reefs or feeding stations for all species, attracting small bait fish, crabs and shrimp. This also makes a great stopping ground for groupers during the fall and winter months. There are many
manufacturers of great trolling lures for grouper. We all have our preference, andmine happens to be Rapala X-RAP and YO-Zuri F series. Theselures work best between 6 to 15 feet of water, perfect for trolling docks. The speed you troll depends on the depth of water, hull design and size of engine. When trolling it’s best to go by RPM than speed. When you get your first strike make a mental note of your RPM and stick with it, since a change in tide movement or wind could affect your speed and you might need to change your RPM accordingly. Try keeping the lure as close as possible to the outside edges of the docks and watch the tip of your rod because you will want the lure to bump into the bottom once in a whileand this tells you you’re on target. I always troll with two rods and each one has a different color lure, some days blue works and others they only touch green back ones, so my recommendation is always carrying 4 or 5 different colors and fish them until you find the one that works for the day. Somedays are better than others and the water temperature has a lot to do with the bite. The cooler the water
with Captain Dylan Hubbard INSHORE FISHING REPORT Redfish action is the highlight inshore right now with tons of actively feeding fish from the beaches to the back bay. We are seeing big schools of fish around mid to low tide in the upper bay and back bay areas. During mid to high tides, suggest looking for schools of big mullet in those same areas to find the redfish. Around the pass, we are seeing them mostly around the mangrove islands and oyster bars. They do hang around the dock lights and bridge lights but mostly on or near the bottom and they are a bit trickier to get chewing compared to the plentiful trout. Pompano have been fairly active around the beaches and passes, but the back bay grass flat edges are a great place to find them. We are seeing pompano pretty active over the bay area mostly on the doc’s goofy jigs or other pompano style jigs. Sheepshead are super active around the area and extremely concentrated on local docks, piers, bridges, and jetties. We even see them around the rock piles and seawalls too. However, it’s a great time to get plentiful sheepshead throughout our area on smaller pieces of cut shrimp and even small crabs, barnacles or sandfleas. Great time to target them when the water gets murky around the fronts. If your offshore trips with us get canceled due t o cold front weather, it’s a great option to stay on the docks and target the sheepshead. Snook action is pretty much totally receded

to the back bay and upper bay areas this time of year. They are fully into the wintertime pattern now with most of those fish hanging out around the flats, mangroves, creek, river and bayou mouths. They are really feeding actively on the white bait, but will take large cut baits and even live shrimp too. Trout are fired up around the area with lots of aggressive trout feeding around our local area. They love soft plastics, live shrimp, live white bait and a variety of options. They are typically pretty grouped together around those areas they can have some cover and feed actively. Flounder action is going well around the area, but they are closed through November 30th for a spawning closure. They are pretty large lately around the pass and even around the jetty and docks too. They love ambushing baits that pass to close to the bottom. NEARSHORE FISHING REPORT Hogfish action is going super well around the area, we are seeing good action on our 10hr and a few on our 5 hours too. The near shore private fishing charters are really doing well for the hogfish along with the ten hour all day. If you want the best chances of catching a hogfish I would do a private fishing charter, but the 10hr is a great option too, or even the 5 hour gives you a chance at them! The live shrimp is a great option bait wise with around 30lb leader and 3-4ot hook and minimal 1-2oz weights. They are curious creatures, and they love some light tackle and live shrimp but will take small

Work an area more than once, sometimes Mr. Gag just didn’t get there in time for a meal and your second run through gives him and you a second shot of landing a prize catch. Another good area is along the sides for channels leading into the canals were the grouper will stage up and work their way in with the tide. I caught plenty of flounder, redfish, trout and some big snook while trolling for gags. The best part is that you can start trolling early, catch your fish and be back at the dock in time for the football game. Sometimes we get unexpected surprise like a big red grouper, some redfish and even a large snook. My favorite tackle: Rod: OKUMA CEDROS #S-701Ma 7’0” Reel: OKUMA #6000 AZORES Spinner Line: Fins Windtamer 40-pound test braided line. Leader: Soft Steel40-pound test fluorocarbon at least 3-foot long. Lures: YO-ZURI F series and Rapala X-Rap

West Central Florida crabs, sand fleas and even rock shrimp too. Lane snapper are super thick near shore too! We are seeing lots of lane snappers while targeting the hogfish, and they love the shrimp but will also take cut thread fins and even squid too. The lane snappers are super prolific and very aggressive when we are fishing around 60-100ft of water near shore, but we catch them even shallower than ever before. Mangrove snapper action is surprisingly active near shore. They are also surprisingly large for our near shore waters too. They are best out deeper closer to that 80-100ft range and beyond, but we are seeing them consistently even as shallow as 40-60ft of water they just get more concentrated and larger on average the deeper we travel. They are all about the cut threadfin on the double Snell rigs, but we catch a bunch while targeting hogfish with shrimp too. Mackerel action is hot on the beaches, around the passes, and all the way through the near shore waters. We are not seeing any notable number of kingfish, but the mackerel haven’t let us down this year. Hoping we get a push of kingfish on this moon like we would typically see, but we just haven’t had the water temps or the water we want to have the kingfish get thick for us.

On October 7, 2018, As the sun began to paint the sky with its gentle morning hues, Tania and I arrived at the docks around 7:00 a.m., ready for our adventure. We wasted no time and soon found ourselves at our chosen spot by 7:30 a.m. This time, we decided to explore and try a channel marker we’d never fished before. The wind was spirited that day, and it certainly made anchoring a bit of a challenge. We gave the new spot a good 15 minutes, but neither Tania nor I got a single nibble. Undaunted, we decided to switch to a channel marker we knew well, which usually held lots of fish. Thankfully, the wind and the current were aligned, making anchoring much smoother. For an hour and a
half, we cast our lines and reeled in a haul we could be proud of. Our catch included six undersized mutton snappers, three sheepsheads, three legal mangrove snappers, and even a mojarra, or sand perch. Tiana had quite the battle on her hands when she was broken off twice by something formidable. One time, it nearly wrestled her rod right out of her grasp. I had my challenge as well, being broken off once. To this day, I can only speculate that it was a slot snook, as we never managed to bring it to the surface. Our fishing expedition also offered us the opportunity to witness nature in action. An osprey, perched about 150 yards away, was eating its breakfast – a freshly caught fish. It was a sight to behold, and Tiana and I made a pact to bring our good camera on our next trip, ensuring we wouldn’t miss capturing such moments. The bite slowed down as the tide slowed, prompting us to shift to our favorite spot. Here, the wind and current worked in our favor, making anchoring a breeze. We were soon rewarded with a bountiful catch of lane
with Captain Jim Hobales Change of Seasons! The past week or so the weather has changed. We have had hard NE winds which pushed the mullet through Biscayne Bay. I got out with my son James on a cool morning and had for the fish to wake up. We found some Snook on a sea wall chasing mullet, lucky we had NLBN lures rigged up. It didn’t take long, and James was hooked up. It was a great fight but not a giant at 28inches. There were some Tarpon and big Jacks also blowing up on the mullet which is lots of fun to watch. I was throwing a 5-inch NLBN and had the Jacks chasing it. I netted some mullet and headed to Government Cut and It was nasty.
everything that swims and they work in salt or freshwater. The water is still high out there and the fish aren’t easy, but we managed @ 30 fish between all 3 of us. We had Bass, Oscars and Blue Gils as by catch. Not to bad in 3 hours!
It was blowing @ 20 MPH, but we were able to fish inside the rip. We had a couple big Cudas eat the first couple baits and then a hard fighter that stayed deep. It took a few minutes, but James landed a nice African Pompano. We fished around the bay chasing mullet schools. We stopped on a bar that’s been holding some nice Trout lately. We caught about 20 Trout up to 21 inches and headed back toward Haulover.
Well they didn’t today, as a matter of fact. The Ladyfish were just in giant schools and not letting anything else eat. We eventually found some Snook and I had Fred hooked up to a few big back-country Goliath Groupers. They can’t refuse a live Jack, but I also had one on a 5 Inch NLBN lure which was fun. None of these fish were landed today, they are just getting bigger back there.
I fished with my son a bunch this week. We fished Holiday Park on last Sunday with our buddy Mike for Peacocks. The day was beautiful, and I had sat around all morning doing nothing. We got out about 2 pm and there wasn’t anyone there. We are still using the NLBN on

I fished with my friend and accountant Fred this past Sunday at Flamingo. The winds have been steady 20-25 mph all week. Fred just got done with busy season and needed to get away. The morning was beautiful until a front started moving in. The moon was still up as we got out into open water, sometimes the small Tarpon will eat until it sets.

Treasure Coast snapper. I only kept the larger ones, measuring between 9 to 11 inches. By 11:00 a.m., we ran out of bait, but our cooler was brimming with fish. It had been a beautiful day on the water, one to cherish in our memories. We encountered a delightful surprise on our way home from Fort Pierce Marina. Ten peacocks were proudly strutting along the roadside, their vibrant plumage a testament to the beauty of nature. Despite the exhaustion from the previous day’s travel, I couldn’t help but look forward to preparing those fish for dinner. Tomorrow, I had plans to create mouthwatering fish tacos, and I promised to capture the culinary delight with some pictures to share. Tania and I send our best wishes to all fellow anglers, hoping your fishing adventures are safe, blessed, and full of tight lines and good times! Florida Keys imagine sleeping in an air-conditioned hotel room in the Everglades. Driving the news: The new Flamingo Lodge & Restaurant opened today nearly 20 years after Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma destroyed the original lodge. The neighboring Guy Bradley Visitor Center, which was also recently reconstructed, opened this summer. Details: The lodge — designed with climate resiliency in mind — features 24 rooms made from shipping containers that are elevated off the ground by stairs and columns. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. To continue offering these classes safely for the students and instructors, they are being offered on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. Because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida!
