A MESSAGE FROM
Jason Lopez Head of School
Dear Pegasus Community, “Gratitude” might feel like the wrong word when you reflect back on 2020. Even for the luckiest among us, it’s been a year filled with great uncertainty and unexpected challenges. We’ve all been forced into adaptive circumstances, sometimes uncomfortable and usually out of our control. But as is often the case, times of hardship not only deliver important life lessons—resilience, creativity, strength, and fortitude to name a few— but they also reveal the bedrock qualities and institutional values that define us. Pegasus has never been immune from demanding times. Every challenge we’ve endured over our 36 years, however, has only solidified and strengthened our ethos or, as some call it, our “Pegasusness.” We are who we’ve always been—an adaptive institution able to draw from a deep well of flexibility, innovation, institutional intelligence, and talent within our community. This past year, we discovered how deep that well goes.
6
THE PEGASUS SCHOOL
Gratitude, therefore, is the perfect lens to reflect back on the past 12 months. I’m more grateful this year than most for having witnessed the power of our community. I’m grateful for our committed faculty, who not only continued to provide an outstanding educational experience, but delivered those lessons with imagination and compassion. Our Teacher Tuck-In program, for example, allowed our youngest scholars to not only appreciate books, but also to feel safe and seen and treasured. Our online Talent Show enabled our students to showcase their gifts centerstage with a much wider audience tuning in from across the country. Our graduation ceremony permitted every graduate more time, space, and individualized attention from their teachers. What separates Pegasus from other schools is our focus not only on the whole child, but every child. Ironically, in many ways, the pandemic allowed us to do that better. And while not always easy, we’ve all once again proved it possible. Thank you to each of you who modified your lives, and your homes, and adapted along with us. Thank you for the time you devoted, the energy you expended, and the funds you donated to make this past year not only survivable, but extraordinary. While many schools simply tread water, waiting for this time to end and life to return to normal, Pegasus embraced the opportunity by trying new teaching techniques, maximizing the benefits of technology, and exploiting the hidden gifts of hardship. We incorporated the outside world—with all its rapid changes—into our everyday lessons. Those
lessons are critical to training 21st century leaders and educating resilient scholars. Diamonds, as we know, only form under pressure. While we can’t control our world, we can control our reaction to it. Pegasus, once again, sought out every opportunity allowing this to be a time of ingenuity, creativity, growth, and empathy. None of this is possible without you and your generous contributions to our community. For all of that, and for each of you, I’m grateful.
Jason Lopez Head of School
A MESSAGE FROM
Brian Cullen Board Chair in delivering it. Parents supported these endeavors at every turn in myriad ways.
Dear Pegasus Community, Almost 200 years ago, British Statesman Benjamin Disraeli observed, “What we anticipate seldom occurs, but what we least expect generally happens.” Ironically, Mr. Lopez and I borrowed Disraeli’s quotation for a presentation this past January. Two months later, the pandemic sent us all out of our offices and classrooms and back into our homes. However unexpected the challenges this past year, Pegasus once again showed its strength and proved its readiness and ability to adapt, pivot, and continue delivering the superb education and socially enriching experiences our students deserve. Last June’s graduation looked a little different from past years, but was no less special and maybe more personal. Our 59 graduating scholars, artists, and athletes advanced to 17 different high schools, each individually cheered on by faculty, administrators, and staff. Students demonstrated their resilience by adapting to a new work environment at home and online. Faculty revealed not only their commitment to our high educational standards, but their creativity
8
THE PEGASUS SCHOOL
Our Board, guided by our Strategic Plan, made advancements of our own. Thanks to the generosity of many donors this fall, we unveiled the new, state-of-the-art Science and Technology Building, now home to 14 classrooms, including five active laboratories. We also introduced our Horowitz Family Quad, an essential space in meeting the safety needs of our community as we navigate the pandemic. Corinne Yeager joined our faculty as the School’s Technology Coach, a prescient and essential addition to our community as learning moved online last spring. We continued to support our financial aid program and strengthen the School’s financial position, consistent with our commitment to deliver an unparalleled educational experience to our students while sustaining a strong future for generations to come. Through conservative fiscal management and the generosity of our donors, our endowment continues to remain robust and our financial goals realized. We’re wellpositioned to thrive in the future despite the uncertainties of the past year. These extraordinary achievements in challenging times have been made possible because of the strength of our collective community. On behalf of our Board of Trustees, thank you all who have given your time, donated funds and have continued to believe in Pegasus as we navigated uncertain times. Not only did we meet our perennial goal of graduating another fine class of scholars amidst a global pandemic, but we also successfully completed the largest building project in the
history of the School on time and under budget. We extend our gratitude to Jason Lopez, Head of School, for his steady leadership and strategic adaptability, and our incredible administrative team and talented faculty. Thank you to our team of volunteers, our Board of Trustees, our Committees, and our Parent Teacher Organization for their time and commitment to our School when their expertise, time, and talent were most needed. It’s been an honor and privilege to serve as Board Chair of Pegasus for the past 3 years. Diem Dang has now stepped into this role and, under her qualified leadership along with talented and devoted Trustees, I’m confident Pegasus will continue to succeed in meeting whatever challenges lie ahead, and prosper in the face of change. My time on the Board has reinforced what I knew as a long-time Pegasus parent— because of our incredible community, strong leadership and amazing faculty, there is no better school in Orange County that equips students to achieve future academic success and make a positive impact on society. I wish you all a safe, healthy, and fulfilling 2020-21 school year.

Capital Campaign
T
hroughout the 2019-20 school year, The Pegasus School was home to a major construction and renovation effort. However, this dream took flight long before, with careful planning by the Head of School, Board of Directors and a capital campaign committee. The top priority of our school’s master plan has been the newly-opened Science and Technology Center — not only for these two subjects but also added learning space long needed for middle school students and foreign language. Additionally, the Horowitz Family Quad provides students with more outdoor space to learn, socialize or as a respite from the day’s activity. Moreover, Frieden Family Middle School has been renovated, and our sixth- and seventh-grade students have gained optimal learning space with the expansion of classrooms. Now, for the first time in 20 years, the Pegasus campus has been updated with new and refreshed spaces. Over 140 of our current and alumni families generously supported this notable project. It is remarkable to have such a giving community of individuals who not only seek to better their own child(ren)’s education, but for the generations of Pegasus students to follow. This supportive nature speaks to founder Dr. Laura Hathaway’s ideology for the school she envisioned — helping our students build wings to soar.

A MESSAGE FROM
Becky Janda PTO President our children continued their school year and maintained connections. We showered them with treats, virtual flowers and notes, and an amazing video entitled Together We Can, Because of You. We couldn’t physically see the faculty and staff, but we hoped they felt the love and gratitude the community had for them.
Dear Pegasus Community, The PTO spent 2019-2020 hard at work to realize our mission of encouraging parent involvement, bringing Pegasus families and staff together and enhancing teacher curriculum to have maximum impact on student learning. We are filled with gratitude for the families that engage so enthusiastically for our school and for the school that supports us and partners with us to maintain and strengthen the Pegasus community. Our year started in full swing, bringing the community together at our Fall Parent Parties and First Day Social. Our volunteers jumped right in by helping to show our unending gratitude for our faculty and staff through monthly PEG LOVE events. As we are so grateful for all that we have, the Pegasus community came together monthly to help those in need. The students made over 100 blankets during RUN.GIVE.SERVE. that were ultimately given to those experiencing homelessness! We extended our community when we invited our grandparents and special friends to join us for a morning of treats, music and fun. We became even more grateful for our community and school as midMarch rolled around. Gone were the days of in-person events. The PTO adjusted and turned our attention to making sure the faculty and staff knew how much we appreciated everything they were doing to ensure 38 THE PEGASUS SCHOOL
All of this was done with support and collaboration with the school administration. We are grateful for this relationship. We share many of the same goals and are able to work together to ensure success. This was exemplified when the PTO and school collaborated to bring Michele Borba to our school as a part of PEGtalks. This success was achieved due to our collaboration. The PTO and Middle School were in the process of planning an all new SPRING.SERVE. event that gave the middle schoolers the lead in educating those in lower school about a need in the community and doing something to help. And all of the PTO programs are funded by the Give to Great Annual Fund. I just want to say thank you. Thank you for being a part of the Pegasus community. Thank you for being involved with the PTO and by supporting the PTO with your time and contributions to the Annual Fund. Thank you to those that embraced a program and made it happen. Thank you to the many volunteers that made things happen behind the scenes. We wouldn’t be what we are without you. We are so grateful for all of you. Thank you for making all of this possible,
Becky Janda 2019-2020 PTO President
