Would you trust me to drive this?

We challenge Ceri-Lee to drive a tank... It was a damp Saturday morning, and I went in search of Holmescales Activity Centre just outside of Oxenholme.

Anyone who has been in a car with me before will know that I drive like a granny with a chronic case of nerves regarding every other road user. But in this beast I was unstoppable. After all, who’s going to argue with a tank?

I was greeted by the lovely head instructor and ex Army guy Phil, and told to help myself to some tea and some scrumptious homemade cakes whilst they got everything together. As soon as I saw the cake, I knew this was going to be a great day.

We went almost vertically down hills, splashed through puddles, and climbed muddy banks. It was quite simple to drive, with only two brakes to control the tank and an accelerator pedal. Why on earth they can’t make cars like this, I don’t know.

After the necessary form filling exercise, I was introduced to the tank driving instructor Adam who drove us off road to the track. And there she was... A massive piece of engineering glory... And I would be driving it.

On our way back, since there was only me and my better half Jeremy, Adam let us try some off road driving in the Land Rover. It was surreal basically letting the car do the driving – you didn’t even have to put your foot on the pedals. I had a go at conquering the seesaw as well, which I took on rather aggressively! I would love to try this for a bit longer as it may boost my confidence in driving.

Now, to say I was excited is a bit of an understatement. Firstly, finding out that a centre like this existed just around the corner from my house, but secondly being able to drive a tank there? That’s just awesome.

I must also add that we were treated to a

6

filling and delicious home cooked lunch of stew and scones with cream! This half day activity day may be the ideal treat for a loved one, and there is a whole range of stuff to try, from falconry to quad biking. They do vouchers, so a perfect treat to pop into a card. MUM ON THE RUN The Clothbum Conundrum

Of course, using cloth nappies was once the only option, and getting to grips with the complicated folding of terry squares, huge pins, crackly plastic pants and nappy buckets was a rite of passage for new mothers. These sort of images still put people off the idea of cloth nappies, but in fact they’re pretty outdated.

When a new baby is on the way, there are lots of decisions to make, including choosing between cloth or disposable nappies. The statistics quoted by organisations such as the Cumbria Real Nappy Campaign make pretty scary reading, even if you aren’t an eco-warrior. Around 8 million disposable nappies thrown away every day means a huge amount of landfill. In money terms, it’s reckoned that every child gets through an average 5850 nappies before they’re potty trained- multiply that by the cost of a disposable nappy and you’re looking at a fairly hefty wedge for your little one to spend a penny. There are also those who argue that the chemicals used to manufacture disposables are not the best thing to put in contact with your baby’s skin, and that natural organic cotton or bamboo is a much better option.

Terry squares are still used by some parents, mainly because they’re cheap and can be used for different sized children depending on how they’re folded. But if origami isn’t for you, there are now lots of other, more convenient options about, including cloth nappies that are shaped like a disposable nappy with fasteners already in place so they’re just as easy to put on. Nappy pins these days have been replaced with less lethal looking fastenings such as Velcro and snaps, while cloth nappy manufacturers use a whole range of techno-fabrics to make supersoft, absorbent and washable inners, with waterproof but non-crackly covers. As for nappy buckets- well, you can’t get away from the fact that you have to store the nappies somewhere until it’s a nappy wash day. However, with the use of flushable liners, which allow you to get rid of most of the nappy’s contents into the toilet, you can have what’s known as a ‘dry bucket’. This means you just have the bucket full of nappies, with a secure lid and in a safe hygienic location, but without any water or chemicals in it- in other words no evil-smelling nappy soup. So they’re cheaper, greener and they aren’t the faff they used to be. So why doesn’t everyone use them? Sometimes it’s the initial outlay that puts people off. Even knowing that, long-term, you can save money using cloth nappies

8

over disposables, it’s quite scary spending a big chunk of money all at once, especially as it’s just when you’re also having to get all your other baby stuff and you’re not even sure if you’ll get on with using them. The answer to this is: don’t spend lots of money. Like a lot of areas in the country, Cumbria has an incentive scheme (the Real Nappy Campaign mentioned above) which gives expectant mums a voucher to use to buy cloth nappies. It’s not a huge amount, but if you choose the right brand, you can get enough to at least try out using cloth when your child is small. That way you can give them a go for free, and if you find they work for you, invest more money in different styles or sizes later on.

For some people it just seems too inconvenient. I can’t lie about this. There are quite a lot of situations where disposables are easier. But with the right design, there’s no reason why changing a cloth nappy at home should be any less convenient than a disposable. As for the other times, well I can vouch for the fact that you can ‘do’ cloth nappies wherever and whenever with a bit of planning. On the other hand, diehard cloth nappy fanatics may curse me for saying it, but you don’t have to use them 100% of the time! In our household we’ve found ourselves using disposables for reasons such as long car journeys, night-times when the children got to the stage of sleeping 10 hours or more and getting very wet and when we’ve been on holiday where we haven’t got a washing machine. The way I see it, even if you only use cloth nappies for, say, 10% of the time, that’s still 10% less landfill. Obviously the more you use them, the better value for money you get, but if you’ve used vouchers to get them, then any money saved on disposables is a bonus.

Some people just don’t know where to start. It’s true, if your nappy knowledge doesn’t go much beyond the aforementioned terry squares, being faced with a world of prefolds, all-in-ones, shaped, organic cotton, bamboo, microfibre etc. is pretty daunting. There are more possibilities than I could ever cover here, so the best thing is find a shop or website run by experts, or try one of the big parenting website forums. Cloth nappy types tend to be enthusiasts and if you ask for help and advice you’ll find out all you need to know to work out what might suit you. Just don’t be bamboozled into spending a lot of money up front- as I said before, you should be able to try out the idea for little or no initial outlay.

Learning all the skills you need to look after a baby is a challenge, but if you make using cloth nappies part of your routine it’s much easier and you can enjoy the warm glow of knowing you’re looking after your child’s inheritance- both financial and environmental. Anna Elliott

A week in the life of an easy Jet Setter! “More than in any other area of fashion, travel demands clear cut decisions before you leave and adaptability once you’re on your way. Not only can’t you go home again for a forgotten necessity, but it may be impossible to replace or improvise during your journey”

check in baggage would be considerably more and so made the inspired decision to wear her entire holiday wardrobe on the plane. Sues outfit would include trousers with skirt over the top, a couple of tshits with a light sweater and cardigan, accompanied by a scarf and a warm coat. In her hand luggage she also took a white shirt and an extra tshirt and cardigan, altogether the makings of a week’s worth of fabulous outfits! Sue came into Two by Two looking for the key pieces that would mix and match and agreed to take some holiday snaps and share some of her minimalist travel tips.

The wise words of American designer Anne Fogarty couldn’t be more relevant today than when first written in ‘The Art of Being a Well Dressed Wife’ in 1959. Fogarty, who claimed she would rather stay at home than travel with only 3 pairs of shoes, might have been flabbergasted by today’s holiday makers and travellers who leave home for 6 months with little more than a sarong and a fleece. Indeed Fogarty, who thought nothing of taking 18 dresses and 20 pairs of shoes for a 10 day excursion would have been blown away by the modern day capsule holiday wardrobe which multi tasks beyond belief and fits into a nutshell.

2

It would seem that a secret packing code has been discovered, but alas supreme packing for the 21st century traveller is simply a matter of survival. Unlike in days of yore when one could leave for the South Sea Islands with a man to carry your trunk, modern day travel is similar to an Olympic sport involving wrestling through crowds, clambering for seats, squeezing through aisles, standing in queues, waiting in traffic and if you’re travelling by air and your bag is not the exact specified shape and weight it will cost you £500 just to check it in.

Rachel Weaver Two by Two

With all of this in mind, Pinfold reader, Sue Wiggins prepared for her trip to Berlin with careful precision. While Sue was delighted to pick up flights with Easy Jet for about £2.99 she was aware that the cost to

1 10

1.

Check out airline baggage regulations prior to travel to avoid disappointment and additional charges at the check in desk. It is important to pack according to specifications and Sue recommends making a box with the advised dimensions at home to ensure your luggage fits the bill.

2. Lay your planned holiday wardrobe out to ensure it mixes and matches seamlessly.

3 4

3. Wear your holiday wardrobe on the plane... a skirt works fabulously over jeans or trousers, tshirt, pullover, cardigan and coat will all come in handy once the aeroplane air conditioning kicks in. 4. Easy no brainer outfits every day of your holiday wherever you go whatever you do... Bon Voyage!!!

There has been one downside to this though; due to a combination of general contentment and her mother’s fabulous cooking I’ve experienced a rather impressive growth in my waistline. Like everyone else in the same position, initially denial was key. I’ve not got bigger, my clothes have just shrunk slightly, obviously. Must have washed them too high. At the end of December two events occurred that meant I had to face up to the truth. Firstly I decided to venture into town and treat myself to some new clothes. The following two hours were laced with equal measures of despair and self-loathing. Everything I tried on showed a multitude of bulges and vast volumes of flesh that were not present earlier in the year. I left town with nothing but the image of my flabby self in the mirror staring back under the harsh halogen lights of the Topman changing rooms. The second came later that day when I attended a friend’s birthday. One of my closet acquaintances greeted me with “Alright Jones, you’ve bulked up a bit.” I knew what he meant, and it wasn’t “Mr Jones, you’ve gained muscles in appropriate areas.” No, he meant “Boy, you got fat.” With one eye fixed upon the increasing strain placed on the top button of my trousers and the other glaring at my 30th birthday I decided it was high time to do something about it. The question is how do you motivate someone like me, someone whose exercise is limited to giving his thumbs a strenuous workout by either playing on games consoles or smart phones? The answer was I needed to put a spin on this and use my tech addiction to help me become healthier. To start off I needed a way to track my daily

calorie count, both what I’m consuming and what I’m burning off. I chose Calorie Counter by FatSecret, (available for Android, Windows Phone, Apple iPhone and iPad) it’s easy to see why this free app is so highly rated across all three platforms. The application comes with an extensive database of foods from a wide range of brands, supermarkets and restaurants. Each listing is then includes full nutritional information such as total calories, fat, carbohydrates and protein and even the percentage of your recommended vitamin intake. Ever wanted to know how much vitamin A is in an avocado? Well, probably not, but this app will tell you anyway (and now you’re wondering, it’s 6%). Your entries are all grouped together in your daily Food Diary so you can see exactly how much of your recommended daily intake you’ve eaten, making calorie counting an absolute breeze.

It’s all good and well knowing how many calories we’re consuming but we also need to know how many we’re using. Thankfully the same app does that too. After inputting your height and weight you can record exercises and the app will give you a rough estimate of how many calories this has burned off. Considering it takes a deficit of 3500 calories to get rid of a pound of fat being able to see your net calorie spend over a week is a great help.

Keeping a track of the run and walk durations can be tricky though, especially while you’re breaking a sweat and pushing yourself that extra few steps, this is where the Couch-to-5K app by the Active Network comes in to it’s own. Currently only available for the iPhone (I’ll explain what Android or Windows Phone users can do later) the application makes following the program and tracking your progress simple. You’re provided with voice prompts to start running or slow down to a walk along with encouraging support. You can even have the app play your music in the background so you can set up a playlist of tracks to help you exercise to. The app tracks the distance you’ve covered over GPS which acts as great motivation when you look back over the week to see how far you’ve ran. The application only costs 69p and I’ve personally found it absolutely invaluable.

Calorie counting is only one part weight loss though. It’s equally important, if not more so, to get regular exercise. The benefits of cardiovascular exercise are phenomenal; strengthening your heart and your muscles, increasing bone density and blood circulation, reducing stress and the risk of diabetes and, of course, burning fat. One of the easiest forms of cardio exercise is running but many of us are put off after our first run when we completely over exert ourselves. What we need is a program that gently eases us in to a regular running pattern while providing us with a way to track our progress. The Couch-to-5K program and application does exactly that.

For those who aren’t using iPhones there is unfortunately no official application, however Total C25K for Windows Phone

The name Couch-to-5K does exactly what it says on the tin. It aims to take a person who does no exercise (a couch potato) and transform them into a person who can run non-stop for 5 kilometers, all over a process of 9 weeks. The program only asks for you to run 3 times a week, for a duration of just over 30 minutes and starts off gently, taking you from a brisk 5 minute warm up walk and then through an alternating pattern of jogging and walking for 20 minutes with a further 5 minute cool down at the end. It may sound easy to anyone who regularly jogs but for those who are just starting out on a quest for fitness, I can promise you a few aches by the end of the week! As the weeks progress the run time duration increases while the walk time decreases, meaning you have to push yourself that little bit harder.

offers the same functionality in both a free ad-supported application or alternatively a £1.29 ad-free version. Android users can download C25K by Guy Hoffman. As previous, there is both free and paid for versions, check both out before downloading to see if the paid version offers more features. What do you do though if you don’t fancy pounding the tarmac? If you own an Xbox 360, a Playstation 3 or a Nintendo Wii you could do a lot worse than buy a copy of EA Sports Active 2. When the game originally launched it was priced around £70 due to the inclusion of a heart rate monitor however it has recently seen a dramatic drop and can be found online for approx £20. The game includes a wide range of exercises, including cardio and weight lifting style exercise, with which you can pair the included resistance band or use actual weights. The full routine is a 9 week plan of 4 exercises per week, complete with a computerised personal trainer who will encourage (or berate!) you as you exercise. Each week the game performs a heart rate test to determine your progress and provide feedback, goals and achievements to keep you on track. At the time of writing I’m just about to start my fourth week and have seen noticeable improvements to both my weight and muscle structure.

We’re only 2 months in to 2012 and I’m already noticeably fitter, slimmer and generally feeling more relaxed. I’m sleeping much better than I ever have, I can’t recommend it enough, I only wish I’d taken that token “before” picture. Have a go yourself, I’d love to hear about your experiences with the examples I’ve recommended above or if you’ve found one that suit your needs better.

The only downside to EA Sports Active 2 on the Playstation or Xbox is that it requires either the Playstation Move and Xbox Kinect add-ons, neither of which are particularly cheap. However if you’re a technology addict (like me!) then there’s a good chance you already own one or the other. If you don’t, or are trying to justifying purchasing one, consider that it’s an easy way to exercise while having fun and considerably cheaper than a gym subscription that you’ll sign up for and then be too embarrassed to cancel. Instead of spending an hour playing FIFA 12 take half of that time to do some exercise and you’ll be amazed at how quickly your overall fitness improves!

Eat for heat Spring may be just around the corner but we’re still some weeks off packing away our winter woollies. Linda Stott, Health, Wellness and Fitness Professional joins us to share her favourite Winter warmer and some top tips to keep us toasty. “Certain foods can help keep your body toasty by heating us up from the inside. We are naturally drawn to warming soups and hot beverages when it’s cold outside, some foods stimulate heat production more than others. Pungent ingredients – like spicy ginger, chilli, pepper and garlic – can aid circulation and generate warmth. Coughs and colds are rife at this time of year so make sure you keep your immune system boosted by eating plenty of leafy green vegetables and fruits packed with vitamin C like oranges, grapefruit, strawberries and tomatoes.

It’s cold here in the Lakes and I’m thinking about all those lovely winter stews, pies and wholesome casseroles. They are an amazing way to warm up and fill up on all of those vitamin rich vegetables and protein and fibre rich beans and lentils.” Linda suggests testing out her Crecy Pie on the page opposite for a wholesome family meal but just before you do, check out her other top tips for cold weather:

The great outdoors It’s easy to hibernate indoors during the winter months, but getting outside every day is important for good health as your body needs sunlight to create vitamin D – essential for healthy teeth and bones. Even when the sun isn’t shining your body can still produce this from sunlight on your skin; getting out for a short walk everyday will keep your vitamin D levels topped up.

Protect from the elements Winter weather combined with central heating can leave your skin feeling seriously lacklustre; don’t neglect your skin just because it’s easy to hide away under your winter woollies. Tackle dry flaky skin by first exfoliating away the dead skin cells and then applying a rich moisturiser. Although it might seem strange to be thinking about sun damage when it’s so cold outside, UV rays can still penetrate the skin on cloudy days so use a moisturiser with a built-in SPF to protect your skin and keep wrinkles at bay.

Linda’s Crecy Pie Method

Ingredients

Chop the onions and grate the carrots. Melt the butter or margarine and sauté the onion until transparent.

Serve hot or cold 350g/12oz Onions 350g/12oz Carrots 50g/2oz Butter or margarine 5ml/1 tsp Thyme 30ml/2 tbsp Wholemeal flour 5ml/1 tsp Yeast extract (Marmite or Vegemite) Pepper to taste 1 Tin brown lentils 425g/15oz Wholemeal shortcrust pastry

Add the grated carrots and thyme and simmer gently, stirring frequently, for 10 minutes. Stir in the flour and yeast extract and season to taste. Leave to cool. Roll out a generous half of the pastry and use to line an 8” pie plate or flan tin. Layer with the lentils and veg mixture and top with the remaining pastry.

*There are wheat free pastries available for those with wheat intolerance.

Seal the edges and flute with a fork. Make two slashes in the centre of the pie and decorate with diamond slivers of pastry if desired. Bake in the oven at 200°C (400°F/Gas Mark 6) for about half an hour until golden.

Say it with Flowers

Gods and goddesses aside, we can be sure that it’s actually thanks to a certain Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, a society lady and poet,

O my luve’s like a red. red rose That’s newly sprung in June; O my luve’s like the melodie That’s sweetly played in tune.

She travelled to Constantinople (now Istanbul) with her husband in 1716 and found that the locals used flowers and plants to convey messages. Upon her return to England in 1718 she brought her findings back with her. The idea really took off in Victorian times and some may even go as far as to say she laid the foundations of the love affair our nation has with Roses.

As fair art thou, my bonie lass, So deep in luve am I, And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a’ the seas gang dry. Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun! And I will luve thee still, my dear, While the sands o’ life shall run.

These days it would seem that the meaning of each flower is not widely known except of course for the red rose. But what are you actually saying when you give someone a rose?

And fare thee weel, my only luve, And fare thee weel a while! And I will come again, my luve, Tho’ it were ten thousand mile!

A single red rose in bud means pure and lovely/young and beautiful.

So said the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns, was this where the link between red roses and love came from?

12 red roses mean be mine or I love you.

Throughout history, lovers have given flowers as a gift to symbolise various things. Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, gave a rose to Eros, the god of love, perhaps this is what created the link between roses and romance?

Yellow roses indicate friendship Lavender roses tell the recipient it is love at first sight A black rose announces the end of a relationship.

22

It isn’t just roses which send messages;

The language of flowers is a complex one, so buyer beware – if you are really out to impress someone do your homework. You really don’t want to tell your True Love yours is only a platonic love (Rose Acacia). It’s a minefield – maybe best sticking to the red roses after all!

A red tulip is a declaration of love Forget-me-not denotes true love Carnations convey pride. Orchids are meant to leave a long lasting impression and should be sent to someone who has captured your eye. Daffodils symbolise new beginnings but also make the perfect gift for March Birthdays. Honeysuckle displays devoted affection and a strong bond. A purple Hyacinth tells someone that you’re sorry or will forgive them.
