MUM ON THE RUN Early Reading

asking for a book to be read over and over again, but even if they don’t, it’s good to read books twice in one sitting. With the story, the pictures and possibly also the lifty-flaps or touchy-feely bits to take in, they will get more out of it if they can go over it all again, especially if it’s a new book. And yes, the plots of children’s books don’t exactly match up to your favourite Steig Larsson, but try to enjoy the grown up-friendly humour that many of the best ones include.

There doesn’t seem to be a week goes by without one expert or other bewailing the standards of literacy among the children of today. Parents understand what a key skill reading is for general success at school but it can be hard to know the best way to help. I spoke to some experienced primary school teachers to find out how and when to hatch your little bookworm and their response was overwhelmingly enthusiastic. It seems that long before they bring home their first school reading book or begin to tackle phonics there’s lots you can do at home. “I wish people realised that even tiny babies love books and that reading to your child every single day makes a huge difference later on!” was a reply that pretty much summed up the response. Here, then, are their top tips for reading with tinies:

Don’t Worry, Be Silly If reading is a chore for you or your child you’ll never make a reader out of them. Read books that you both enjoy and don’t hold back on using silly voices for different characters, adding sound effects or giving over the top reactions to ‘surprises’ or ‘scary’ bits in the story. Add singing songs and reciting rhymes to the mix and you might feel completely ridiculous but you’ll be doing excellent work developing their language and remember nobody’s looking! At the same time, always praise your child for good reading when they attempt to tell you the story, even if they get everything in the wrong order, have the book upsidedown or are just pointing at things and babbling- don’t correct them, just beam with pride at what they’re trying to do.

Never Too Young To Start Evidence does appear to show that children who are read to regularly from very early in their lives really hit the ground running when they get to school. So even if they try to eat the pages, nod off halfway through or insist on slamming the book shut just as you’re about to reveal where Spot is, don’t see it as a failure- it’s all part of their learning and with time they will respond more and more.

Beyond Books If you want your child to be a reader, they need to see others reading around them,

Twice Is Nice Sometimes your child will be the one

4

so make sure they see other children and adults doing it. Reading doesn’t have to mean books- Daddy might be reading a magazine or big brother reading the instructions for his new computer game, so point out what they’re doing. Shopping lists, road signs, letters, recipes, emails...let your child know what you’re reading and why and if possible let them ‘read’ it too.

any time. You might find that there are phases when they want to look at books all the time and other times when they just aren’t interested, but keep encouraging them to read each day and do your best to be available to read whenever the mood takes them. Make reading a habit from early on with these suggestions, and before you know it, they’ll be nicking your copy of The Pinfold to read it first!

Freedom To Choose It’s really important to make books accessible and give as much choice as possible- from books with no words, just pictures to talk about, to those with buttons to press or flaps to lift, to traditional tales, to those with rhymes and repeats or series featuring favourite characters. This can get expensive, so try charity shops to pick up bargains and don’t forget your local library- most librarians are lovely and these days as well as a frequently updated range of books you can often borrow things like ‘Story Sacks’, where a book comes in a special bag with puppets, games and activities linked with the story. There are no fines for overdue books borrowed on children’s library cards and it’s a good way to find out which books and authors you both enjoy.

Anna Elliott

Hands On Approach Try and keep at least some books in a place your child can reach them independently at home, and accept that while children need to learn to treat books properly, they also need the freedom to explore, so you might have to accept a bit of ‘testing to destruction’ at first. Try putting some books out for a few weeks, then swap them for different ones to keep your child interested. When they do choose a book to bring to you, always make sure you praise them for it, even if it’s one you find dull as reading the telephone directory...or even if it is the telephone directory. Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere Don’t think that books just have to be a bedtime thing. They can form a lovely part of the night-time routine but there’s no reason you can’t read to or with your child

The perfect roast potatoes mark, without being able to slide into the flesh. Drain extremely well. Put the potatoes back into the pan, scatter the flour and polenta over, and add a pinch of salt. Place a lid on the pan, and coat the potatoes in flour and polenta by shaking the pan a couple of times (this will also rough up the edges and sides of the potatoes nicely). Heat your oven to 200C/170C fan/Gas mark 5. Place the goose fat and oil in a large roasting tray that will accommodate all the potatoes in one layer and heat for 5 mins. Quickly, but carefully tip the potatoes in and return to the oven. Cook for 30 mins, turning once, then turn up the heat to 220C/200C fan/ Gas mark 7. Cook for a further 20 mins, or until crispy all over. Sprinkle with a little more salt if required, then serve. Delicious!!

Serves 8 Preparation time: 10 mins Cooking time: 1 hour Ingredients 2kg / 4lb 8oz roasting potatoes eg King Edward, peeled 2 tbsp plain flour 1tbsp polenta or extra flour 5 tbsp goose fat 5 tbsp vegetable oil Method Start by cutting the potatoes into quarters, ideally you want to end up with even size 5cm pieces. Put the potatoes into a large pan of salted water and boil for 5 mins, until the potato just starts to soften. A good way to check this is to scrape a fork across a potato, it should easily leave a

25g/1oz chopped pecans Method Heat your oven to 220C/200C fan/ Gas mark 7. Place the carrots in a large baking tray and toss with the olive oil and a generous pinch of salt, then spread the carrots out in an even layer. Cover with foil and roast for 10 mins, then cook uncovered for a further 20 mins. Drizzle the maple syrup over the carrots and scatter the chopped pecans over the top, returning to the oven for a final 10 mins, giving you soft golden carrots and toasted pecans. A tasty accompaniment to grace any dinner table at Christmas.

Matt Jones on the mobile market

Recent months have seen 3 ma jor players in the mobile phone industry show off their latest and greatest products. Join us below as we take a look at the products that will be vying for the space in your pockets!

has been flaky at best and slightly limited. Siri however works fantastically well and it’s also impressive to see that Apple have given it a personality, meaning that humorous questions will be answered with equally humorous answers!

Early October saw Apple reveal the highly anticipated update to their iPhone. The run up to the announcement was accompanied by a huge amount of speculation about the changes Apple had made to the phone. It was widely assumed that we’d see a dramatic redesign with most people expecting to see at least a bigger screen. When the new model, the iPhone 4S, was revealed however, we saw a device that looks nearly identical to the previous model. This isn’t to say it was a disappointment though because all the changes were on the inside.

Next it was Google’s turn to talk about what they had in store, and they delivered two big pieces of news. Firstly, they showed off the newest version of their Android operating system and continued their food based naming method naming this iteration Ice Cream Sandwich. This tasty update has been labelled the biggest yet by Google and it’s easy to see why; a substantial layer of polish has been applied across Android while also introducing new features into the mix. One of the biggest criticisms of Android is that it’s not as easy to use as its competitors and Google have made several changes to address this. Gesture based actions have been integrated, so for example the user dismisses notifications with a simple swipe across the screen. The same motion has been used to dismiss applications from the multitasking window, calendar reminders and browser tabs. Homescreen widgets are now re-sizable and spelling correction has been made much more intuitive.

The processor in the phone was given a significant boost, moving to a superfast dual-core chip. This means twice the processing power and an incredible 7 times the graphics processing ability, meaning apps launch instantly, web pages load quicker and games look much better than ever before. The camera has been bumped up to 8 megapixels with larger aperture, meaning more light can get into the camera sensor, vastly improving the quality of photographs. Add to this that the phone can now record silky smooth full high definition 1080p video, you can see that the iPhone would be a great device for the more creatively minded user. Apple also introduced a new feature, Siri, which has been billed as an intelligent assistant in your phone. In essence Siri is a voice control application that you can use to compose text message, tell you the weather, call people, schedule appointments in your diary, and a near endless array more. Ask Siri “will I need an umbrella today?” and it will search through local weather reports to let you know! While voice control is not a new feature, it

10

Amongst the new features are notable additions such as a data monitor system. Many a mobile phone user have been given a shock when data changes have substantially increased their bills. The data monitor will allow users to set warning levels, hard limits or even entirely disable mobile data, either across the system or just for specific applications. For the more security conscious amongst us they unveiled Face Unlock, a feature where instead of a pin code or pattern, the state of the art facial recognition software recognises the user and unlocks the device. Alongside Ice Cream Sandwich, Google also showed off what will be their new flagship device, named the Galaxy Nexus. Designed to show off the new operating

The handset is sculpted in a 12.1mm thick piece of durable polycarbonate plastic that’s coloured the entire way through so nicks or scratches won’t be noticeable. Nokia have also always made fantastic cameras and the 8 megapixel Carl Zeiss lensed model on the Lumia 800 is specifically designed for great pictures in everyday situations. The 1.4GHz processor means Windows Mobile copes with intensive tasks and looks fantastic on the 3.7 inch curved glass display.

system to its fullest, the new handset features some drool-worthy specifications, such as a huge 4.65 inch high definition curved Gorilla Glass screen and a dual-core processor. While the 5 megapixel camera may seem disappointing compared to the iPhone 4S camera, sample shots have shown that both the still shots and the 1080p video are no slouches at all. Last, but certainly not least, we come to Nokia. The Finnish giants have had a difficult time over the last 4 years since the introduction of the iPhone. Their market share has been slowly eroding and it’s driven them to stop using their own operating system and take up Windows Mobile by Microsoft. Windows Mobile has recently seen a dramatic overhaul and has been completely revitalised. Earlier this year the two companies showcased their collaboration on their first handset, the Nokia Lumia 800, in October.

If you’re due to upgrade over the next few months these three new and exciting phones will certainly make it a tough decision!

The Lumia 800 looks like it will be a phone that reignites belief in Nokia. One of their strong points has always been design quality and the Lumia 800 is no different.

Gift Guide 13

A guide for him, buying for her “The great question that has never been answered, and which I have not yet been able to answer, despite my 30 years of research into the feminine soul, is ‘What does a woman want?’” Sigmund Freud was not alone with his thoughts regarding women. Every Christmas time, I see it shared by the menfolk who frequent Two by Two in search of the perfect gift for the lady in their life. The ladies in question would more than likely adore the task of seeking out their ideal gift yet the guys are generally not so enthused and endure it in the way they might a root canal! Nevertheless I am warmed by this perennial quest and every level of effort made, from those that come in weeks before and agonise to the Christmas Eve 4 o clockers who dive in looking desperate. It’s no surprise they feel a little lost, what a woman wants is indeed a mystery sometimes even to herself and if a man is not blessed with the gift of mind reading, the Christmas high street can be a daunting place. It’s possible her friends or family may shed light on the matter or you might find some clues in her wardrobe if you have

a root....often girls are shoe fanatics or cardiganoholics and once you’ve found her weakness at least you know where to buy a gift voucher. However, if you are still at a loss, the small independent shops can come to your rescue by offering considered advice and fabulous, carefully chosen products with local customers in mind. If you are a chap who has not been granted the gift of knowledge regarding your female partners Christmas wish list then Ulverston is a great destination offering you a wealth of choice. Small shop owners and assistants serve and engage with the ladies of Furness daily and have an insight into their wants and needs. They choose their products with this in mind and oftentimes might even know the female in question and might have seen her drooling over a dress or a teapot or some soap. Best of all, more than often, once your gift is chosen, these lovely small shop folk will wrap your brilliant gift so it looks brilliant too…women like that! Rachel Weaver Two by Two

I’d walk on fire for St Mary’s Hospice! As you may have figured out by now, I can’t say ‘no’ to much, so when I was challenged to a fire walk I jumped at the chance. I was even more excited this time though as I was going to do it in aid of St Mary’s Hospice. Organised by the Rotary, this charity event brought nine of us together in a unique experience. Tony and Julie from Aha Success ran the evening superbly, and had us doing all sort of training tasks to get us out of a negative mind set. In one evening they had me walking on glass, breaking an arrow against a wall with my throat, and walking on burning embers. Not bad for a Friday night...

wanted to try walking on glass. My hand went up faster than a kid in class with the right answer, and I took on the challenge first. See photo 1. After we all aced this challenge, we were presented with an archery arrow. A real one. And then we were told to snap it. With our throat. Yes, it really can be done with enough belief and momentum. See photo 2. The fire was just getting to the right temperature, so we all headed out and met by lots of friends, family and onlookers. You could feel the heat from a few yards away. That’s when I suddenly realised that we will have to walk on some bloody hot stuff!

As usual, over-excitable me wanted to try everything at 100mph, so when we were all lighting the fire I was raring to get going. Obviously, we had to let it settle first or else it would be a bit extreme I suppose!

The spectators were told to keep quiet and not disturb us, although I still went rushing up to my parents and better half in a whizz of excitement.

After a short seminar, Tony asked us if we

tiger suit unlike co-walker Doug, but I had enough enthusiasm to make up for it. Tony was asking if anyone had any questions before we started, and my impatience got the better of me as I asked if we could start! It was natural progression from that point that I would be the first to walk on the newly raked ashes, that were still glowing from the heat. See photo 3. Once I started, I just couldn’t stop. See photo 4. It was a great evening, and I think everyone got something slightly different from the experience. The Rotary put on an amazing banquet of delicious nibbles.

It is estimated that over £4300 was raised on the evening, with donations going towards St Mary’s Hospice, The Alzheimer’s Society, SSAFA and Help for Heroes. Tony and Julie also donated their time to the event as well, which was held at Chetwynde School in Barrow who deserve a massive thank you for letting us use their field and facilities. One amazing woman
